Episode 28: A Sci-Fi Dawn

Tonight! We begin a bold new experiment on this SciFi edition of Multiverse Tonight.

Welcome to the SciFi edition of Multiverse Tonight. I’m Thomas Townley

We are trying something new, with this episode and the episodes to come. This is how this will go. This episode will be the SciFi edition. Here you will find the Star Trek, Star Wars and general scifi and fantasy news. Episode 29 which will appear in your feed a couple of days after this one is released and it will be the Comics edition. With all the DC, Marvel and all the comics entertainment related news.  I’m just days away from going to the Smallville Con in Hutchinson, KS. It’s kind of my hometown comicon as it’s only around 30 miles from my home. So I hope to be able to get a few interviews that Ill be able to share with you in a future episode. So let’s get to the news.

Star Wars

We start Star Wars news dispelling a rumor. There was a rumor recently that cast members at Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge weren’t allowed to use the term Younglings because of the child murders committed by Anakin in Revenge of the Sith. This rumor came to light from a tweet from Jenny Nicholson on twitter who tweeted quote “Also a cast member said “kids” and I jokingly said “oh, younglings?” and she blindsided me by telling me they’re already scrubbing “younglings” from the vocab. Parents didn’t like it because one of the only times you hear it in the movies is the phrase “killing younglings.” Fair.” Unquote

However when Newsweek contacted Disneyland for a comment they told the magazine that quote “Disneyland says that cast members do not avoid the word “younglings.” “Our cast members use that word daily in the new land, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, as part of the interaction with guests,” unquote. So it sounds like not saying Younglings was a personal choice of some of the actors not a policy. Now go take your younglings to Disneyland. Just watch out for Rogue Jedi turned Sith.

It’s a trap! In an interview  the puppeteer for everyone’s favorite Mon Calamari Admiral Ackbar Tim Rose voiced his disappointment in the way Ackbar was killed off in The Last Jedi.

So If you’ll recall the scene in the movie, Ackbar died when the bridge was destroyed wiping out pretty much the entire leadership of the Resistance. Save for Leia who literly forced her way back.Yeah, very much so. Quote “After The Force Awakens — for whatever reason, length of picture, whatever — it all got cut out. So after waiting 30 years to reprise Ackbar I was a little disappointed with Ackbar’s role in that picture.” “So in The Last Jedi, I was quite looking forward to maybe them giving him something more juicy,” he continued. “We were only given the script on the day when we were shooting that piece of script, so each day I would come to work going, ‘Is today the day when Ackbar gets something a bit more involving?’ And I looked at my script and I went, ‘Oh, Ackbar’s going out of the window. Well, that’s that then!’ I wasn’t quite dead yet.”

“We finished all of our bits and they asked me to come down to camera. And I thought, ‘Oh well, maybe they’re going to say thank you for being one of the heritage characters and giving 30 years and all that.’ But what they did was, they gave me a Millennium Falcon sign that had the day and the date on it, the scene number, and they said, ‘Can you look at the camera and say ‘It’s a wrap?’ Because that would be really funny.’ … I was actually in tears in the suit because I thought – after everything, after hoping there’d be something, after knowing there wasn’t going to be anything else, Ackbar’s final moment before he went in to the box was a big joke about ‘It’s a wrap.’ They just thought ‘Wouldn’t it be funny?’ And that was the sum total of my life as Ackbar.” Unquote

Yeah, it was kind of a pointless way to die. It would hae made more sense if he did what Admiral Holdo did.

Lucasfilm president  Kathleen Kennedy has been elected Chair of the American Film Institute Board of Trustees, the AFI announced. She succeeds Sir Howard Stringer, who has been the chair since 1999.

Kathleen’s role will be setting the institute’s priorities and guide its national education programs. The mission of the AFI is to preserve the heritage of motion picture and to honor the artists and their work and to educate the next generation.

Kathleen said after accepting the honor said quote “It is a distinct honor to be elected as Chair of the AFI Board of Trustees,” responded Kennedy. “AFI’s commitment to the power of storytelling — coupled with its profound respect for the past — is an inspiration in our modern day, and I look forward to working with the Trustees and the incomparable Bob Daly with the goal to shine an even greater light upon the impact these stories have in our nation and around the world.”

Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker is still months away, what to do , what to watch? How bout some cartoons? The Star Wars Kids Youtube channel has some animated fun for you. Star Wars Galaxy of Adventures  features the iconic characters of the franchise and features a bold palette of colors and the actual dialogue, music and effects from the movies.

Indie game publisher Limited Run Games has announced this past week at E3 that it will be reviving more than a dozen old Star Wars games with new physical collector’s edition re-releases. They will start with the release of Star Wars Bounty Hunter for the Playstation 4 on June 28th. Future releases will be for the original platform and include the 1991’s Star Wars for NES and Gameboy and Star WarsShadows of the Empire and Star Wars Episode One Racer for Windows PC and Nintendo 64. Thirteen including the ones I just mentioned will be released, we will have a link to the list in our show notes.

Also shown off at E3 was Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order. The game will be released on November fifteenth and will be available on Playstation 4 Windows PC and Xbox one. Game creator Stig Asmussen describes his influences for the game as Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Metroid and a little Zelda.

Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge has some pricey souvenirs including a life size custom astromech for 25,000. You would think something like that wouldn’t be a huge seller, but you’d be surprised. According to Disneyland employees who spoke the the orange county register,. three of the R2 units were sold in the first week of operating. The droid is completely customisable and operates via remote control. The custom droids take up to 90 days to be delivered, shipping not included and no returns or exchanges accepted. If it breaks down, it’s up to you to find a droid repairman.

Star Trek

Wilson Cruz, who plays Star Trek Discovery’s Dr. Hugh Culber is featured on one of four special Pride Month covers of Entertainment Weekly. On the show Dr.Culber Lt. Cmdr. Paul Stamets are the first openly gay regular characters in the franchise. Cruz shared the cover on twitter with the tweet quote “This one goes out to every young LGBTQ kid out there, who has any doubt, whatsoever, that because of who they are or how they LOVE, they can’t achieve their dreams. ¡Si se PUEDE, mi amor! ¡Si se PUEDE! Thank you @entertainmentweekly for the honor of gracing your #PRIDE issue! Unquote It should be noted that the print edition of entertainment weekly will soon be abandoning the weekly format and switching to a monthly format. The first issue will be in August and focus on the San Diego Comic Con.

JJ verse captain Chris Pine and a crowd gathered in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery to introduce a trailer for Love Anthosha, a documentary about the late friend and co-star Anton Yelchin. The trailer played before a screening of Star Trek, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Pine told the assembled quote  “Obviously we’re here for Anton; he was one of my dear friends and I felt like I was only getting a chance to know him better one when he passed,” “The film is incredible and I think it’ll show you all different sides of the guy that I knew — this curious, fascinating, complex, strange little dude.” Proceeds from the screening benefited the Anton Yelchin Foundation. Anton died 3 years ago this month from a freak accident involving his car. Anton was 27 years old.  The documentary Love Antosha comes to select theaters on August second.

Star Trek cover artist Keith Birdsong has passed away at the age of 59. Birdsong was a self taught artist who painted the covers for dozens of Star Trek novels among other things.

Keith was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma and began his artistic career by creating drawings to help flesh out his reporting for his first career journalist for the US Army, which would win him the Keith L Ware Award, which is considered the highest honor for military journalism.

He became a professional illustrator and would soon do work for pocket books Star Trek novels. Doing such covers as Sarek, All Good Things, Q-Squared and the Star Trek Chronology. He also painted portraits of Kirk, Spock and McCoy for the US Postal Services 25th Anniversary envelope set. He also illustrated the collectors plates from the Hamilton Exchange. He not only did Star Trek illustrations, he also did the postage stamp of Elvis Presley  and the depiction of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that is part of the Smithsonian Institute’s collection

In 2018 Birdsong suffered a severe stroke but made a great recovery. Unfortunately this year he suffered a second stroke that caused a car accident from which he was unable to recover from. He is survived by his parents, his daughter, granddaughters, sisters, his girlfriend and many more.

Thanks Keith, we will always have your great artwork.

Sci Fi in general

In the Geek News, Netflix is looking toward video games for ideas. The service has acquired the rights to Ubisoft Motion Pictures adaptation of The Division, based on the game of the same name. It will star Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal and David Leitch has signed on to direct. The Division is a Tom Clancy game and is set in a dystopian New York after a smallpox pandemic

Godzilla’s latest movie, Godzilla, King of the Monsters did pretty well it came in at number one it’s opening weekend. But has dropped in the weeks since.  So were you wondering what King Ghidorah’s different heads were called? Director Mike Dogherty gave each head its own name. Asked what they were on twitter, he replied quote Center head: Ichi; Right head: Ni; Left head: San… aka Kevin. 🐲🐲🐲#GodzillaMovie unquote Ichi, Ni and San are Japanese for one, two and three. Each head was performed by a different actor.

WarnerMedia’s streaming service has ordered Dune The Sisterhood straight to series. The series from Legendary Television is based on Frank Herbert’s classic novel and will coexist with the new Dune feature film from Denis Villeneuve. This is part of an extensive plan that Legendary has for Dune including video games, digital content packages and comic books.Villeneuve is not only directing and producing the film, but executive producing the series and directing the pilot episode. The series joins Tokyo Vice, Love Life and a Gremlins animated series on the WarnerMedia service which according to the wall street journal will cost 16 to 17 dollars and will include HBO and Cinemax and Warner’s library of tv and movies. So will Dune entice you to pay AT&T? If that doesn’t maybe this will word on the street is that WarnerMedia is close to an megadeal with JJ Abrams BadRobot.

We got a bit of news from Ghostbusters 3. Sigourney Weaver has told Parade magazine the she will be in the movie as Dana Barrett, Annie Potts has also all but confirmed to KTLA 5 in Los Angeles that she will probably be back as Janine Melnitz and at the recent Ghostbusters Fan Fest, Jason Reitman revealed that Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Earnie Hudson have all read the script. But no confirmation on their returns. And while plot details remain under wraps, we do know that the plot centers around four teens and a small town family. Jason reitman has called the new movie a love letter to the original.

So let’s look at this past weekend’s box office.

And that brings us to the end of the scifi news. *Show Ender*

Comics Edition

Welcome to the Comics edition of Multiverse Tonight.

DC

We begin DC News with word that Warner Bros is skipping Hall H this year at San Diego Comic Con International. Instead they’ll be promoting the sequel It Chapter 2. However that doesn’t mean the DC Extended Universe is finished. Deadline reports that WB chairman toby Emmerich spoke at the “Produced by” Conference and said that Warners is relying on its filmmakers visions to create future DC films and that Warner Bros would be back at SDCC in 2020. So it sounds like 2019 will be a bit of a rebuilding year.

Now let’s talk about what’s being worked on. First up, Black Adam starring Dwayne The Rock Johnson. We now know that Jaume Collet-Serra who directed Disney’s Jungle Cruise movie, also starring the rock will be directing Black Adam as well. So at least we know it’s still on the burner, but we still have no idea on the release date.

Next up, Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn has a budget, according to a cover story in Vogue the movie is budgeted at 75 million dollars making it the cheapest DCEU film yet. According to movie producer and star Margot Robbie  told Vogue quote “Well, we’re on schedule and on budget,” Robbie told Vogue, “which is a wonderful place to be.” unquote The movie will see Harley Quinn separated from her Joker, teaming up with Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save young Cassandra Cain from Black Mask. The movie is scheduled for February 7th, 2020.

One thing that can be said about the DC universe movies is that it needs to have more humor like Shazam!. Well Director Mike Mitchell , who directed the Lego Movie 2:The Second Part was asked by ComicBookMovie dot com if there were any DC or Marvel superheroes he’s like to tackle in live action somewhere down the line. He replied quote Oh yeah, I love superheroes. I did a superhero film years ago, Sky High, and I’m such a fan. It would be great to see a DC and Marvel character in the same film…that would be fantastic. Maybe just cram them all together into one ultimate film! I’m sure it’s gonna happen at some point but I couldn’t be more happy to work on something like that. It would be fantastic! Plastic Man! They need to make that guy someday. I don’t even know if he’s DC or Marvel.

Plastic Man might be a great movie to make nowadays. It’s definitely one that would have looked cheesy thirty years ago. Hey DC, you really want my money? Make this movie!

We now go over to the tv side of things, And it’s bittersweet for fans of the DC/Vertigo adaptation of Lucifer. TVLine dot com has reported and the official Lucifer twitter has confirmed that the series will be getting one final season. This would be the second end for the series has it was cancelled by Fox after season three and then picked up by Netflix. Still at least the series gets to write its own ending. Lucifer himself, Tom Ellis wrote on twitter about the news quote Well look what happened! A 5th and final season of #Lucifer is coming to @LuciferNetflix thank you to all you loyal #lucifans for watching…now let’s end this thing properly 😈❤️❤️❤️❤️ unquote Ildy Modrovich co showrunner on Lucifer answering a fan question about how many episodes that final season will be replied. Quote “It’s 10… And we’re going to make every minute count!!” unquote

However not all in DCTVville is joyfull. Swamp Thing has been cancelled after only one episode.The DC Universe app show had positive review. Apparently the initial report about why it was cancelled came from the site GWW, which claims that it was the result of WarnerMedia and AT&T execs not liking the show’s creative direction, performances or budget. The Hollywood Reporter reports that it’s sources say that quote the timing of the cancellation was spurred by the studio’s decision to bypass paying millions to store the show’s physical sets in North Carolina. That decision led to the cancellation leak. Contrary to some early unconfirmed reports, tax incentives had nothing to do with the sudden cancellation as Swamp Thing was awarded $5 million in incentives for the pilot and an additional $12 million for the remainder of the season. The good news is that the first season will still air. Unquote Meanwhile there’s some question on if the DC Universe streaming service will continue once the WarnerMedia streaming service is started. I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out.

Legion of SuperHero fans rejoice, the legion will be returning in a superheroic mini event starting in Augusts Superman number fourteen and September’s Superman number fifteen, ahead of own special event in September called Legion of SuperHeroes Millennium. The Legion will meet Superman and Superboy and will be quote making an offer to a hero which will tell Superman’s life apart. Unquote Could they be offering a legion flight ring to young Jonathan Kent?

DC Comics have been used in an unexpected way, ABC news, that’s the Australian Broadcast Company reports that Gold Coast police have shut down the Australian end of an international drug smuggling operation

That has been bringing the drugs in comic books. After an investigation lasting six months, nine properties were raided and 3 kilograms of meth, cannabis and other items were seized. Police said the group had smuggled a million dollars worth of meth from the United States sent through the mail in comic books. The police showed an issue of the  Batman Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover from DC and IDW full of meth. Australian cops have identified the US culprits and are working with American law enforcement to arrest the other end of this ring. 10 Australians were charged with 40 charges including trafficking and supplying dangerous drugs, money laundering, importing a border restricted drug, possession of dangerous drugs, stealing, possession of drug utensils and possession of proceeds of a drug offence. Detective Inspector Brendan Smith told ABC quote “This operation has dismantled a significant criminal network and removed over 30,000 hits off Queensland streets,” unquote Good Job Detective Smith,  Batman would be proud.

Marvel

The new X-Men movie Dark Phoenix didn’t do so hot at the box office. Now that the X-Men Fox cinematic universe is pretty much done, what’s next for our favorite mutants? How about a name change? Appearing on the Youtube show, Nuke the fridge, Marvel Studios VP of Production Victoria Alonso said quote “I don’t know where it’s going to go,” “We’ll see. They just now have joined [the Marvel Cinematic Universe]. They actually have a movie coming out very soon, which is under [the Fox] banner. It’s their last film. We’ll see. Time will tell.” Unquote I don’t know if the X-Men name is really outdated. If it is the term human is also, but what we do know is that it’s gonna be some time before we see the X-Men again.

While we’re talking about Victoria Alonso, she also did a Redit AskMeAnything, and of course, she was asked about the trolling aimed at the film and if it had any kind of effect on the final movie. She replied quote”First of all I share with you the pride you feel for the film,” “I love this film with all my heart. We were aware that there were people that were not ready or perhaps not welcoming of the film but it never interfered with the story line or our vision of the film. When you make stories that could potentially touch an international audience, there will always be a portion of the audience that does not 100% love it. But we hope they give us a chance and see the film before they finalize their opinions. There is something for everyone in our films, even if you’re a little reluctant to watch.”  Unquote

I agree don’t diss it till you see it. You can say it doesn’t sound good, but saying something is terrible isn’t exactly fair if you haven’t seen one frame.

Marvel does great with film, marvel does great with comics, so will Marvel be a hit with audio books? Marvel will be partnering with audiobook publisher Dreamscape Media to release several iconic stories as audiobooks.

The books will be presented in a read to me style of audiobook and will start in September with adaptations of two dozen titles including Ultimate Spider-Manand Ultimate X-Men, X-Men: Codename Wolverine and Daredevil: The Man Without Fear. Other titles will come along later.

These will be distributed on such apps as Amazon, Audible, iBooks, Google and Overdrive.

If your a library patron, you will be in a great place as you’ll be able to listen to these free of charge through the Hoopla App.

Hulu’s The Runaways Season Three has found its villain and they got a huge name to play her. Elizabeth Hurley has joined the cast as the evil sorceress Morgan Le Fay. This version of the Morgan Le Fay character was created by Stan Lee and Joe Manelly and debuted in Black Knight #1 back in 1955. Jeph Loeb said in a statement quote “Elizabeth Hurley is joining the Marvel Universe and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have her portraying one of the most enchanting Marvel characters. Elizabeth Hurley has starred in the first Austin Powers movie, been the Devil in the remake of  Bedazzled and guest starred in an NBC made pilot for a Wonder Woman series that never aired.

IDW Media holdings is bleeding money. With all it’s different arms together, it lost 3.7million dollars. Half of that 1.6 million came from the publishing arm, that’s the part that publishes the comic books. And IDW Entertainment, which makes shows like Wynonna Earp which saw production of season four halted due to lack of funds, lost about 700 thousand. However they remain hopeful saying in the statement to investors  quote IDWP expects to counter soft secular comic and graphic book demand with release of strong titles in 2H 2019;

  • In 4Q19, IDWE expects to deliver October Faction and V-Wars to Netflix;
  • In 1H 2020, IDWE expects to generate approximately $2.5 million in income from operations upon delivery of Locke & Key to Netflix Worldwide;
  • CTM’s brochure and tourism-driven sales were seasonally soft during winter months. Revenue and profitability are expected to rebound during 2H 2019;
  • IDW Media’s cash balance at April 30th was $9 million.

So if your a fan of IDW, you better buy some comics. Fast. things aren’t looking good.

George RR Martin is sure taking his sweet time with that last Game of Thrones book, isn’t he? Well he’s not too busy to lend a hand to a new video game. Bandai Namco has a new game that came from a pitch created by Mr. Martin and Hidetaka Miyazaki. The game called elden Ring doesn’t have a release date yet and is in development for PS4, Xbox one and pc.

Bad news Tick fans, The Tick’s creator Ben Edlund announced that the series has been unable to find a new home. THe series which ran for two seasons on Amazon Prime, as cancelled. Mr. Edlund did try to find a new home but Ben tweeted quote “After much door-knocking we have found no new home for the Tick series in this current market #savethetick & #lunatickarmy I’m sorry we could not reward your glorious support with better news. I am so proud of the show, of the cast and crew and writers, and so warmed by the fans.” We will look for other opportunities to continue this story with this cast, but the current series must Im afraid come to its end.  He continued in another tweet saying Please continue to choose love and hope for good things, And I think we might as well accept it as a law of the universe: when the time is right #thetick always comes back…” unquote Mr. Edlund, I hope that he comes back. Spoon!

John Cena seems to be one step away from announcing his retirement from the WWE ring as he now joins the cast of the Fast & Furious franchise in Fast & Furious 9. John Cena took to Instagram to celebrate the announcement quote “For nearly 20 years, the Fast Franchise has entertained fans and created some of the biggest cinematic moments in history. It’s an incredible honor to join this franchise and this family.” Unquote. Wow, nearly 20 years. No comment. Any way if you wanted to see Cena meet the Rock’s character, you’re gonna be dissapointed as The Rock’s character isn’t in this film, instead he’s in a spinoff movie Hobbs & Shaw.

In what’s becoming a bit of a theme in this episode… The Good Place Creator, Mike Schur in an exclusive interview with the Hollywood Reporter announced that Season Four will be the end.  But not because the network wants it to end. Because he wants it to end. When asked why end with season four he said quote After season one ended and aired and it seemed like the show was going to survive the gauntlet of being a TV show in the modern era, I was like, “Well, this show isn’t a typical show where the goal is to do it as long as we can and as many episodes as we can.” It was never designed that way — we do 13 episodes per year from the beginning. I knew I needed to map this out in the same way that I mapped out the first season, I needed to map out the whole show. I didn’t feel like it needed to be definitive but I needed to have a sense of how long I thought the idea could sustain itself. I came to the conclusion pretty quickly that it was four seasons. There were times early on where I felt like maybe five and maybe it’s three. (Laughs.) Once I settled on four seasons, I didn’t tell anyone — except the writers. I didn’t tell the studio or network because I wanted to make sure that I was right and I wanted to leave open the possibility that as we as a team developed the show, I wanted to allow the possibility that something could change and there was more I wanted to do. But it was pretty much always four from early on as a general map. We spent all of season three checking in and making sure that we were pacing things correctly and there was going to be enough time to do what we wanted but not too much time so that we were running in place. Toward the end of us shooting season three, I told the studio and then we told the network soon after that. It was completely dictated by the idea and how much juice I thought the idea contained and the pace at which we were letting story unfold and stuff like that. The nice thing about TV shows nowadays is it’s not a forced marathon. You can let the idea dictate the number of episodes that you actually do, which is great for creativity. Unquote

I think this is a good idea, given that each episode is written as a chapter, it makes sense that it would have a planned out ending. You don’t want a show like this lingering like oo I don’t know Game of Thrones?

Nintendo had some big announcements at E3, but none was bigger than a short teaser that told fans that the sequel to the hit Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was currently in development. No release date was announced, so it would be 2020 or 2021 before we see it. At the E3 press conference Legend of Zelda series director Eiji Aonuma told IGN that the development team’s inspiration for the sequel was Red Dead Redemption 2. Also announced for Nintendo was Luigi’s Mansion 3 no release date. The remake of The Legend of Zelda Link’s Awakening arriving on September 20th, Contra Rogue Corps and the Contra Collection, the remastered Spyro trilogy, the announcement that Animal Crossing New Horizons has been pushed back to March 20, 2020, The Witcher 3, Pokemon Sword & Shield, Dragon Quest XI Definitive Edition and the announcement that the hero character from Dragon Quest and Banjo-Kazooie will be DLC characters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Microsoft revealed Project Scarlett, the current name of it’s next gen console set to debut around christmas of 2020. It will launch with a new Halo game, Halo Infinite, a new minecraft game was  shown called Minecraft Dungeons, think 4 person dungeon crawler, also coming in 2020. They also released a trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 featuring Keanu Reeves also coming in 2020. Gears of War 5 will be out on September 10th, 2019 and much much more.
