Episodes 30: Hello Young Trekkies, Wherever You Are. & 31: The Sandman Cometh, The Vertigo Goeth Away.

Episode 30

Tonight! Alex Kurtzman has a long term plan for Star Trek, we know two actors who aren’t in the new Star Wars trilogy and Paul Rudd asks who you gonna call on this SciFi edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to the SciFi edition of Multiverse Tonight. I’m Thomas Townley

To anyone new who has joined us, welcome to the SciFi edition of Multiverse Tonight and be sure to subscribe cause two days after this episode drops the Comics Edition comes your way.

I and my wife had a great time at our booth at Smallville Con up in Hutchinson, we gave away a prize box to one lucky winner and gave out cards and flyers. I also got a few interviews with creatives and I’ll be releasing those in an upcoming episode and on our facebook page so stay tuned.

We have a hint of the new Short Trek minisodes that will stream before season three of Discovery comes out. One of the shorts will be called Chaos Theory and will star Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn reprising their roles as SPock and Number one. So far no other hints on what the other Short Trek’s are called or what this episode is about. So watch this space.

Star Trek uber producer Alex Kurtzman speaking with Deadlines Crew Call podcast revealed that he has presented CBS with a 5 to 10 year plan for the Trek franchise with the hopes of breeding a new generation of Trekkies. He told the podcast quote“When I went to CBS and I said, ‘I think you have a universe here that is very under-utilized, and a fan base that I think is hungry for a lot more,’ and I walked them through the plan of what I saw for the next five to ten years of Trek, part of it was kind of premised on the idea that it was gonna take time,” “What I said was, ‘Don’t expect us to put the first thing out, and suddenly, you have 100 million new fans. That’s not gonna happen. Trek’s been around for too long for that to happen.’ “But what we do have is new generations, and what I can tell you is that Trek, in general, finds people when they’re about between nine and twelve. It’s never reached younger than that. It’s never tried to. And to me, that’s a hugely missed opportunity, especially because what you’re really trying to do is influence hearts and minds with really positive messages about who we can be as a species and as people and what our future is. So why not start young, you know? And not for a cynical reason. Not because you know, hey, let some more toys. Because if you really want Star Trek to reach people, then you’ve got to start young…But we are definitely seeing just metric proof that the fan base is growing, and it’s growing younger, and yet, we’re keeping our current fans, and that’s great.” unquote

Now let me take a moment and say that getting a new generation of fans is a great idea. But you need to make sure you don’t alienate the old fans who’ve bought the product for years. Be sure to balance that approach there, make product for both sets of fans.

Kurtzman also gave Deadline a progress report on the Star Trek animated show that is being created for Nickelodeon. Quote “The Hageman brothers are doing [an animated] show for Nickelodeon, and that will be entirely different from Lower Decks.” Kurtzman explained. “I won’t announce the name of the Nickelodeon show, but that’s a really different show. That’s a show that’s for kids, younger. Full CG animation. It’s going to be incredibly cinematic. We just started seeing [storyboards] this week. It looks like, wow. It’s on par with Love, Death, and Robots in terms of beauty and lighting and cinema, so it’s a a really different feel, and Nickelodeon has been wildly supportive and I think very excited to bring a new energy to TV, you know, in animation.” unquote He also said that the characters will be mostly new ones with quote some that you know unquote .  Sounds interesting.

Alex also gave a progress report on the Section 31 show saying that it’s expected to be in production as soon as season three of Discovery is complete. He told Deadline that Erika Lippoldt and Bo Yeon Kim are starting on the story  right now. For influence on the show he said quote We looked to shows like Killing Eve, to franchises like Mission: Impossible, things that were complicated on a plot level but also a character level. I think it’s fun for people to see a show with a protagonist who’s entirely unreliable. At the end of the day, she’s going to do the right thing, but in the exact wrong way.” unqote I just have one request, don’t call it Star Trek Section 31. Just leave the Star Trek name off.

Michael Chabon joined the writers room of Star Trek Picard last fall and now Deadline reports that the writer has been promoted to executive producer and showrunner of the CBS All Access series. Alex Kurtzman said about the appointment quote “Daring, lyrical, humane, whimsical, celebrated: words that describe both Jean-Luc Picard and the literary genius of Michael Chabon,” “Despite a laundry list of accomplishments most writers only dream of, Michael shines with the heart and soul of a Trekkie who’s finally found his dream job. We’re so fortunate to have him at the helm as we explore this next chapter in the great captain’s life.” Unquote  Chabon is the bestselling and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of the novels The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, Moonglow, Wonder Boys and The Yiddish Policeman’s Union, among others. His screenplays and teleplays include John Carter, Spiderman 2, Unbelievable– which he wrote with his writing partner and wife, Ayelet Waldman – as well as the Star Trek: Short Treks episode “Calypso.” In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, Chabon has won the Hugo, Nebula, Mythopoeic, Sidewise and Ignotus awards (Spain’s Hugo Award) and many others.

Since news tht Quentin Tarantino confirmed that his Trek movie will be rated R with plenty of 4 letter words.. Some Trek fans have been outraged, well if they were looking for support from William Shatner, their looking at the wrong captain. In response to a tweet asking for his thoughts on the use of expletives in Trek, Shatner replied quote Why are people plotzing about this? It’s my understanding that Star Trek Discovery has used expletives in some episodes. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Why aren’t people melting down over that? Unquote . Well actually some have, but it seems to be a small part of the fan base.  The best advice is this, if you don’t wanna hear expletives, don’t go see it.

Writer and Producer Peter Allan Fields has passed away, Peter wrote several episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation and Star Trek Deep Space Nine including the Next Gen episodes “Half a Life,” “Cost of Living” and “The Inner Light,” and DS9 episodes “Dax,” “Duet,” “Blood Oath,” “In the Pale Moonlight” and “The Dogs of War” He also wrote for other properties including The Man from UNCLE, McCloud, the Six Million Dollar Man, Knight Rider and Xena Warrior Princess. Peter Allan Fields was 84.

Star Wars

We begin Star Wars news with confirmation from actress Daisy Ridley that she will not be in the new Star Wars trilogy under development by David Benioff and DB Weiss. Quote “I mean, I can say I’m not in the next trilogy,” “No. I think, ’cause Rian always said…if it’s the Rian one…or it’s the guys that did Game of Thrones. I’m not sure. Whichever one it was, they always said it was going to be a separate story. So I’m not. No.” Unquote However she did leave the door open that she may return to the Star Wars universe someday. The first movie in the new trilogy will come out in 2022 with the following movies in 2024 and 2026.

Another actor not in the new trilogy will be Mark Hamill, however he will be in this winters Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker. The details about the movie have been kept under wraps, but Mark has confirmed one little detail. At the premiere for the new Child’s Play movie, Hamill told the associated press quote,”I sure hope so,” “Well, because…I had closure in [The Last Jedi]. The fact that I’m involved in any capacity is only because of that peculiar aspect of the Star Wars mythology where if you’re a Jedi, you get to come back and make a curtain call as a Force ghost.” Unquote

So Anikin, Yoda, Obi-Wan and Luke. We have four force ghosts in this series. Can we get them together and form a band? “Ladies and Gentlebeings, The Force Ghosts!”  I see Yoda on Drums, of course.

By the way, if your interested in getting to know Snoke a little better, Marvel comics has something for you. Star Wars Age of Resistance: Supreme Leader Snoke #1: “The Devil’s Apprentice!” by Tom Taylor and artist Leonard Kirk will take you back to the events before The Force Awakens and show you quote “Supreme Leader Snoke’s brutal training of Kylo Ren begins. Will the sadistic Snoke break his tormented protégé? Or has he underestimated the son of Han and Leia?” Unquote  The other comics in this series focus on Rey, Kylo Ren and Rose Tico and come out in September.

Disney Plus’ Rogue One Prequel series will begin production soon. Mexican press outlet El Siglo de Torreon spoke with Diego Luna who told them that he has received scripts for the series. He also told them that he was busy getting in physical shape to play the younger version of his character. Quote “The problem is that I have to look younger, it’s a prequel!” “With a lot of exercise, organic lettuce (laughs), keep me as young and healthy as I can.”

He added, “The amount of work that is done is brutal.” Unquote

The series is supposed to start production in October.

Star Wars Galaxies Edge might be full of actors playing scoundrels, but real scoundrels are walking away with things, The Orange County Register notes that people are keeping things that are supposed to be given back to the employees of the park. Found  on ebay have been Galaxy’s Edge maps, the docking bay 7 sporks, coasters from Oga’s Cantina, the crew assignment cards for the Smugglers Run attraction and other little items. Disneyland has stepped up watch for this item and have been more selective about handing these things out. They’ve even made sure that people aren’t walking out of Oga’s with the glassware, making sure to trade them for a boxed and bagged glass before the patron leaves. So be kind, don’t smuggle and ruin the experience for others.

GARY DAUBERMAN is a happy man. Gary you see is the screenwriter for It and It Chapter 2 , the adaptations  have received praise from the master himself, Stephen King and in a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter he was asked if having King’s approval was a weight of his shoulders quote I can’t explain to you the relief I feel when he signs off on something or likes the work you’ve done. That’s the first person I’m trying to please when I’m adapting these things. It is an enormous amount of relief. I know I’m never going to be able to please everybody, so I just hope that he’s pleased. It really is a huge relief, and everything else for me is a bonus.Unquote Gary is working  on the adaptation of Stephen King’s vampire story Salem’s Lot and promises a similar approach to it as he took to adapting It.

The Hollywood Reporter announced that the producers of Arrival Shawn Levy, Dan Levine and Aaron Ryder have acquired the big screen rights to The Message, a sci-fi story by Ken Liu. The story centers around an archeologist whose job is to investigate and preserve the stories of extinct civilizations on distant planets. He soon discovers he has a teenage daughter and they explore a mysterious ruin with a cryptic message. Currently the producers are searching for a directory and screen writer. Liu’s work is a hot commodity in Hollywood, his most recent work includes Good Hunting which was used as a basis for an episode of Netflix’s Love, Death plus Robots.

LeBron James, not really a name I use often on this show, took to Twitter to announce the start of production on Space Jam 2. King James said quote Man this really just hit me! I’m really shooting Space Jam 2!! This is so surreal and doesn’t even make sense to me! Where I come from man and what I saw growing up this doesn’t add up to me! 🤦🏾‍♂️! I’m truly grateful and beyond blessed. This is CRAZINESS. 🏀 🐰 🎥 👑🙏🏾 unquote Space Jam 2 will star LeBron with fellow NBA starsPortland Trailblazers’ Damian Lillard, New Orleans Pelicans’ Anthony Davis, and Golden State Warriors’ Klay Thompson. Also joining the squad are Phoenix Mercury’s Diana Taurasi and Los Angeles Sparks’ siblings Chiney and Nneka Ogwumike, with Sonequa Martin-Green set to portray James’ wife. The movie will hit theaters on July 16, 2021.

The cast of Ghostbusters 3 is getting larger. Paul Rudd confirmed via a video on twitter that he will be apart of the film. Rudd will play a small town teacher in the movie. He joins Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace as the newcomers to the franchise. He also joins Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts, who have all said that they are returning. The as of yet officially titled film come out in about a year from now, July 10th 2020.

Welcome to Multiverse Tonight! I’m your host Thomas Townley. So Avengers Endgame is still trying to beat Avatar’s hold on the number one slot, they held a special re-release this past weekend…and didn’t make it. Still about 27 million shy. It was a good shot. Maybe they should have aimed for the head.

As I said in the SciFi edition, Smallville was a good con and I’m working on putting the interviews together to be put up, if you’d like to see some pictures I took, head on over to our Instagram page. Now let’s get on with the news.

Well if it introduces these characters to a new audience, all the better.

DC has announced that January 2020 will see the end of DC’s Vertigo, Zoom and Ink imprints in favor of a new publishing strategy to release all published content under one DC brand with an age specific labeling system.

The new labels will be called DC Kids aimed at 8 to 12 year old, the traditional DC label will be aimed at 13 year olds and up and DC Black Label will be aged like a fine wine in a barrel in a barn. No, Wait, that’s Johnny Walker Whiskey. DC Black Label is for 17 year olds and older. Black Label will be where the former Vertigo content will go. Dan Dido in a statement about the change spoke about Vertigo saying quote We’re returning to a singular presentation of the DC brand that was present throughout most of our history until 1993, when we launched Vertigo to provide an outlet for edgier material,” “That kind of material is now mainstream across all genres, so we thought it was the right time to bring greater clarity to the DC brand and reinforce our commitment to storytelling for all of our fans in every age group. This new system will replace the age ratings we currently use on our material.” Unquote Vertigo was the home to such titles as Sandman, Preacher, Y The Last Man and was the home to such visionaries as Garth Ennis Grant Morrison and Neil Gaiman. So let’s pour one out for Vertigo, you were enjoyed.

And while we’re on things getting canceled. DC has Canceled it’s Road to Watchman book. Road to Watchman would have repackaged old Steve Ditko books featuring The Question and Blue Beetle as they were the inspirations behind Rorschach and Nite Owl. It would have been a 400 page hardcover.

Clark Kent is going to boot camp. Superman Year one by Frank Miller will be released via DC’s Black Label, will be a three volume tale and will be an alternate universe tale that will see Clark Kent going into the Navy before becoming Superman. So how will the military life change Clark? According to former U.S. Special Operations Command honcho Adm. William H. McRaven (ret.), a Navy SEAL veteran in an email to Military Times quote “I don’t know how you can be mild-mannered Clark Kent if you’re a Navy SEAL,”. There’s is a lengthy article on this on the Military Times website and I’ll have a link to it in the show notes.  The first issue is out now and volume two will be out in August. https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2019/06/17/dc-comics-frank-miller-reinvents-clark-kent-as-man-of-seal/

San Diego Comic Con is fast approaching and as I reported in a previous episode Warner Bros is skipping the venerable Hall H panel room this year, Warner Bros TV still has product it wants to show off. DC has announced the creation of a new pop up horror imprint called Hill House Comics. Hill House will be curated by horror writer Joe Hill and be released under DC Black Label banner.

The Line consists of five original miniseries. Miracles do happen, a few years ago Neil Gaiman’s Sandman was in the works to be a motion picture and than that collapsed. It looked like it might never see the light of day again. Cue Netflix, who has according to the hollywood reporter signed a huge deal to adapt Mr. Gaiman’s work into an 11 episode series. Sources close to the project say that this will be the most expensive tv series DC Entertainment has ever done. Allan Heinberg is set to write and serve as showrunner with Gaiman, executive producing alongside David Goyer. Gaiman, Goyer and Heinberg will co-write the premiere.Channing Dungey vp of originals at Netflix said about the news quote “We’re thrilled to partner with the brilliant team that is Neil Gaiman, David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg to finally bring Neil’s iconic comic book series, The Sandman, to life onscreen,“”From its rich characters and storylines to its intricately built-out worlds, we’re excited to create an epic original series that dives deep into this multi-layered universe beloved by fans around the world.” The Sandman comic ran for 75 issues at DC’s Vertigo Imprint following the adventures of  Morpheus, lord of dreams and a group of immortal beings called The Endless including death, desire, destiny, delirium, despair, and destruction.

Marvel

The next movie in the MCU is set to debut in a few days Spiderman Far From Home. And we have some good news, You can get that large soda if you want. The movie, according to the British Board of Film Classification, comes in with a run time of 129 minutes, or two hours and 9 minutes of credits. Of course if you need to pee, might I recommend using the RunPee app to tell you the best times to go? They’re not a sponsor, just a useful app.

So how did the Snap affect those that had vanished and then restored? IN an interview with Fandango, Zendaya, who plays Mary Jane Watson in Spiderman Far From Home revealed that quote “[The Snap] kind of puts our characters in a special place, because now we come back and the world’s kind of changed, and we all have to kind of depend on each other a little bit more, because we’re like the oddballs now. We kind of have to confide in each other with that experience, and that’s cool.” Unquote She also revealed that her character will be a bit more involved in the story than Homecoming quote “In the first movie obviously you didn’t get to see much of her, but she was like a very guarded, sarcastic, character and I think you get to see why she has that guard, and slowly watch her melt a little bit.” Unquote

Well from the capstone of Phase III to the beginning of Phase IV, The casting for Marvel’s The eternals continues an according to thewrap.com Salma Hayek is in negotiations to join the cast that includes Richard Madden and Kumail Nanjiani and maybe Angelina Jolie. Exact details have been hard to come by, but several sources say that Chloe Zhao has been tapped as director. An official announcement about the film is expected at San Diego Comicon this month. Stay tuned.

JJ Abrams is working for Marvel …but he’s not making a movie. JJ is working on a new Spider-Man mini series with his son Henry. The mini series will debut in September and will feature the art talent of Sara Pichelli and will introduce a brand new villain named Cadaverous. This project is actually a long time in the making having been pitched by Marvel Editor Nick Lowe a decade ago. According to JJ quote “Nick had been pressing me to do a book with him,” Abrams said. “A year or so ago, I started talking about it with Henry and it sort of happened organically. And that has been the joy of this. Even though I’ve been talking to Nick for a long time, weirdly, this feels like it just sort of evolved from the conversations of Henry and I, having ideas that got us excited and Nick being open to the collaboration  I have one question, how much lense flair will be in the comic?

So is your local high school tired of putting on You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown for the hundredth time?

Marvel has the plays for you. Move over Samuel Beckett, three one act plays make up the Marvel Spotlight group of plays from theatrical publisher Samuel French. There’;s Hammered: A Thor and Loki play by Christian Borle, Squirrel Girl Goes to College: A Squirrel Girl Play by Karen Zacarias and Mirror of Most Value: A Ms. Marvel Play by Masi Asare. According to the hollywood reporter, they will focus less on visual effects and more on the emotional journey of the characters. The plays will be offered with license fees of $75 per performance for one play or 125 per performance for two or more. So would this be something you’re high school would be putting on?  We will have a link to this in the show notes. https://marvelspotlightplays.com/

Fans of The Office are a bunch of sad pandas. Netflix has announced that the series will be leaving the service after December 2020 and moving to NBCUniversals streaming service beginning in 2021. So of course fans have started a petition to keep the series on Netflix, so far a little over forty nine thousand have signed the change dot org petition. I admire their spirit, but I have to point out that this will probably not work.

The Hello Kitty movie has a writer, according to deadline dot com, New Line Pictures has hired Lindsey Beer to write the adaptation based on the Sanrio pop icon. The movie will mark the first time Hello Kitty has had a major studio motion picture. Beer’s other credits include her credits include Sony’s Masters of the Universe, Lionsgate’s The Kingkiller Chronicles, and Paramount’s Transformers: The Last Knight. She’s also worked on the Godzilla Vs. Kong and Star Trek franchises and is showrunner, writer, and executive producer on Mark Millar’s The Magic Order for Netflix.

Have you missed Myst? I know some of you just said what? Let me explain. Myst was an adventure puzzle game first released back in 1993. In the game, players are told that a special book has caused them to travel to Myst Island. There, players solve puzzles and, by doing so, travel to four other worlds, known as Ages, which reveal the backstory of the game’s characters. So why am I talking about it now? Well the Hollywood Reporter has news that Myst is being developed into shows and movies by Village Roadshow. While not much is known about what or how this Myst-verse is being developed, original creators of Myst, Rand and Ryan Miller will be joining Village Roadshow to help develop the universe.

Netflix’s the Dark Crystal:Age of Resistance prequel series has added some more talent to the show The streaming service revealed that Sigourney Weaver, Lena Headey, Benedict Wong, Awkwafina, Hannah John-Kamen, and Dave Goelz had all joined the voice cast. They also released a series of 32 photos of the characters with  who voices them. The only exception is Sigourney Weaver who’s character is just a disembodied voice called the Myth Speaker. https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/2019/06/26/dark-crystal-age-of-resistance-netflix-cast-photos/

Finally tonight, we say goodbye to Max Wright, who passed away from lymphoma on June 26th. . Max is best known as the day Willie Tanner on the NBC sitcom ALF.
