Show Notes: Episode 32: What Does Picard Call His Dog? and Episode 33: HBO Max, Marvel and Axe and Interviews

Episode 32 “How Does Picard Call His Dog?”

Tonight! Does Picards dog have a name? Is it a good time to go to the Galaxy’s Edge? And I have a couple of interviews from Smallville on this SciFi edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to the SciFi edition of Multiverse Tonight. I’m your host, Thomas Townley. I’ll admit right here at the beginning of the show that the news has been kinda light. This time of year, especially right before San Diego Comic Con, the news is pretty quiet. Good thing I have a couple of interviews from Smallville to cushion the show.  Tonight’s interview is with Author T.M. Hunter and on the comics edition we will have a couple of interviews with two upcoming conventions Top Con and Air Capital Comicon, remember that that episode drops a couple of days after this one. So let’s get on with the news.

 Star Trek

While we wait for Star Trek Picard, have you seen the poster they’ve revealed? Enterprising individuals have done an extreme zoom on Picard’s dogs collar and deduced that his name might be Number One. The collar is engraved with the word No followed by the number one. Guess it’s just habit for Picard, he always needs a number one.

We have news that the soundtrack for season two of Discovery has been announced. Lakeshore Records is releasing it on July 19th digitally. There are 36 tracks from the second season episodes and 3 from the Short Trek episode The Escape Artist (that was the one featuring Harry Mudd) Composer Jeff Russo commenting about the second season score saying quote Star Trek: Discovery continues to be a source of incredible musical inspiration for me. This season’s swashbuckling has allowed the music to shine and grow in ways that I didn’t expect.

So…Are you looking for the Mirror Universe where Trump is a good president and Canada is our mortal enemy? So are some scientists, according to a report from NBC News, a series of experiments will take place at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee this summer in a super collider. There,  A beam of subatomic particles will be shot down a 50-foot tunnel past a magnet. At the end of the tunnel, the particles will be stopped by a wall, and the scientists involved are hoping that this will cause some of the particles to transform into mirror versions of themselves in order to pass through the wall. Oak Ridge’s Leah Broussard believes that this could be an indication of a mirror world existing alongside our own.  The experiment will only take one day but weeks to pour over the data. There was a lot of info in the article about it, We will have a link to the article in our show notes.

Star Wars

As we start on Star Wars news, I find that details about Rise of The Skywalker are few and far between, but we do have details about new Stormtroppers. The newly called Sith Troopers, announced by Lucasfilm feature red and black Stormtrooper armor. More might be revealed at San Diego Comic Con at the Lucasfilm Pavilion which will feature nine different screen-worn trooper costumes, from TIE pilots to Captain Phasma, on display throughout the con as part of a special exhibit commemorating the stormtrooper throughout the history of the franchise. That tribute to the iconic armor will culminate in the reveal of the Sith Trooper armor, and several early-release retail products featuring the Sith Trooper, from a new Hasbro action figure to a Funko POP! figurine to T-shirts and baseball caps.

Daisy ridley’s character of  Rey doesn’t have a lot of quit in her. But Daisy Ridley almost did. Talking with the Happy Sad Confused podcast she talked about almost walking away from The Force Awakens. Quote “It was pretty horrid. It was really scary. I felt just sick and I didn’t really know anyone yet. It takes me a really long time to settle down with people,” “And I do remember being behind the speeder and there were loads of people there and somebody had an umbrella over me and even that, like, ‘Oh someone’s holding an umbrella over you? OK.’ And I remember thinking, ‘I can’t do it.’ Like I can’t do this, this is not right.” “I told the AD (assistant director) but what do you say to that? Me and JJ (Abrams) hadn’t quite got our vibe.” The good news is that by the last Jedi she had a better time of it. Saying quote “It felt really good doing it. Everything we did felt really, really good.”  The next part of her trilogy arrives on December 20th.

So…what does the green milk taste like? Mark Hamill was recently asked about that on Twitter. His response was quote “The green milk was just regular coconut water dyed green in post-production. #TrueStory #Yum 😋,” Yep, you heard right. Green milk, wasn’t even milk, just green dyed coconut water. I say Ick, either way.

The galaxy’s edge has announced the opening of the next ride at the star wars attraction, the rise of the resistance ride. The Disney Parks Blog has revealed quote “When it opens, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will blur the lines between fantasy and reality and will put guests in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance. Guests will be recruited to join Rey and General Organa at a secret base. Along the way, they will be captured by a First Order Star Destroyer. With the help of some heroes of the Resistance, they break out and must escape the Star Destroyer, protect the secret base, and stay one step ahead of Kylo Ren.” As soon as work is completed at Walt Disney World, Imagineers will head back to California to complete their mission at Disneyland Resort where Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will open on Friday, January 17.” That work at Disney World should be completed and the ride opened on December 5th.

Speaking of the Galaxy’s Edge, it seems the crowds might be lighter than expected. According to AZ Central, crowds for the attraction have been so light the virtual queue system created to handle the expected high demand have only been used a few times. This means that the park has been open without limits and the Millenium Falcon ride has had wait times of only between a half hour to an hour. The report suggests that this might be due to people avoiding it thinking that it was going to be too crowded.  So in other words, now’s a good time to go while people still think it’s crowded.

Disney knows that everything they make is money, so Disney is so confident in the new Disney Plus Star Wars show The Mandalorian, that they’ve already ordered a second season. Collider recently spoke to Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau at the premiere of The Lion King, where he told them that he had started work on season two already. Quote “I keep getting pulled deeper into the orbit of Disney, but fortunately the stuff that Disney’s working on is the stuff that I love. I wanted to do a Star Wars TV show like The Mandalorian and pitched it to them and they were very open to it,”

“I even wrote four episodes before I even was hired to do it because I was excited as a fan to see what these stories might be and see if they were interested in doing what I was interested in, which they were. And I was actually writing Season 2 this morning before I came here.” Unquote  Mister Favreau went on to say that season two is in pre-production right now.

The Lord of the Rings series on Amazon is getting its own MMO. First let’s remind you of the details of this series. The series, which will debut on Amazon in 2021, will last for five seasons and will take place in Middle earth about 3 and a half millennia before The Fellowship of The Rings. So don’t expect to see anyone you know. Now to capitalize on this they are making an MMO in partnership with Leyou. The game will be free to play for both PC and consoles. Interesting enough, Amazon has said that the series and the MMO won’t be related. In other words, don’t expect the events of the show to interact with the story of the game. There is no word on when the game will come to market. Now some have gotten worried about what this means for the original Lord Of The Rings MMO, Lord Of The Rings Online. Well, don’t worry, there’s plenty of room for the two, especially since they don’t have anything to do with each other.

Robert Downey Jr. has plenty of time on his hands now that Iron Man has gone to Valhalla. Cue warner Bros. who has announced that Sherlock Holmes 3 is a go with director Dexter Fletcher. Fletcher will be taking over the WB Sherlock Holmes franchise from Guy Ritchie, who directed the first two films in the series. Now to be honest, The film had always been in the planning, but Downey’s Iron Man of a schedule on Avengers kept it up in the air until he was done.   Sherlock Holmes 3 is expected in theaters on December 21, 2021. 12/21/21. See what they did there, doesn’t take a Sherlock to see that.

The cast of Bill & Ted Face The Music seems to get larger every day. Added to the cast in the past few days has been Kristen Schaal who will play Kelly, a messenger from the future (think George Carlin’s Rufus in the first two movies) You may remember Kristen’s voice work from Toy Story where she plays Trixie the Triceratops or her role as Louise on Bob’s Burgers. Also joining the cast is Holland Taylor who will play the Great Leader who is described as quote the most powerful person in the universe — the center of which is San Dimas, Calif., 700 years in the future.” You may remember her as the Mom on two and a half men. She joins Anthony Carrigan, William Sadler, Samara Weaving, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Scott Mescudi (“Kid Cudi”), Beck Bennett, Erinn Hayes, Jayma Mays, Amy Stoch, Hal Landon Jr. and Jillian Bell. Bill and Ted Face The Music comes out on August 21, 2020.

And while we’re talking about casting, you’ll remember that in a previous episode we talked about LeBron James Space Jam 2. Which will star NBA and WNBA stars and Sonegua Martin Green. Well now We can now add Don Chedle to the cast list. According to Deadline, Mr. Cheadle has a secret role in the movie.  So any ideas on what they need iron man’s best friend for?

So let’s look at this past weekend’s box office.

One last duty Before we get to the interviews for tonight. We must say goodbye to actor Rip Torn. The actor, who might be best known to current generations as Zed in Men in Black and Men in Black II passed away on July 9th. Rip was born Elmore Raul Torn Jr on February 6th 1931.

After college, where he majored in animal husbandry, he left for Hollywood. He began his acting career in 1956 appearing in a segment of the tv series Omnibus. His long career includes two guest roles on Alfred Hitchcock Presents, a guest spot of The Man from UNCLE and Columbo, various voices in the Twisted tales of Felix the Cat, the role of Arthur on The Larry Sanders Show (which won him an Emmy), a recurring role in Will & Grace and 30 Rock and movie roles in The Man Who Fell to Earth, The Beastmaster, Airplane II The Sequel, Defending Your Life, Robocop 3, Canadian Bacon, Down Periscope, he voiced Zeus in Disney’s animated Hercules., Freddy Got Fingered, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Bee Movie and a voice over as Hephaestus in the God of War III video game. 191 acting credits in all. Over his career he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, nominated for six Emmy Awards including the one I just mentioned for the Larry Sanders Show, and a Satellite Award. He also won an American Comedy Award for Funniest Supporting Male in a series, two CableAce Awards He is survived by his third wife Amy Wright and his six children.  He was 88 years old.

Tonight! Warner Brothers has named its streaming service, Marvel and Axe body spray make superheroes? And I have an interview with a couple of upcoming comicons on this comics edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to Multiverse Tonight! I’m your host Thomas Townley. It’s been a slow couple of weeks for news. This time of year,  San Diego Comicon causes the news to just trickle out, guess they want news for all those Hall H panels, so we’re a little light on the news, no fear however, I have an interview saved up with the guys from Top Con from Topeka and Air Capital Comicon in Wichita that I got Smallville Con a few days ago. So we’re good, just stick around till after the geek news. Let’s get on with the news

We start off the DC News with word that Warner Brothers has announced that its new Netflix competing streaming service, will be called HBO Max ( Well at least they’re staying away from using the suffix Plus. That’s kinda getting played out.) the new service will launch in the spring of 2020 and will have 10,000 hours of content at launch, including the exclusive streaming rights for all episodes of ’90s hit “Friends.” among other WarnerMedia properties which will be slowly and surely clawed back from other streaming services. Now price has been given, but expect it to be in the fifteen dollar range.  Cord cutting is starting to get expensive.

HBO Max will combine content from HBO with a slate of originals and programming from Warner Bros., New Line, DC Entertainment, CNN, TNT, TBS, truTV, The CW, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Crunchyroll, Rooster Teeth, and Looney Tunes. In its announcement, WarnerMedia highlighted some of the content coming to HBO Max, including previously announced originals.

WarnerMedia has also announced that it has penned new exclusive movie production deals for HBO Max with Greg Berlanti and Reese Witherspoon.

Mister Berlanti will produce an initial four movies in the young-adult genre, while Ms. Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine will produce at least two films for the service.

Bob Greenblatt, chairman of WarnerMedia Entertainment and Direct to Consumer said quote “HBO Max will bring together the diverse riches of WarnerMedia to create programming and user experiences not seen before in a streaming platform,”unquote

HBO Max will be the exclusive streaming home for new Warner Bros.-produced CW shows in the fall 2019 season, including “Batwoman,” and “Katy Keene” (a spinoff of “Riverdale”). New CW shows going forward will be available on HBO Max beginning 30 days prior to the TV premiere of the next season of those shows. The CW shows currently licensed to Netflix, like “Riverdale,” “The Flash” and “Arrow,” will remain on Netflix for the next few years.

So will you subscribe?

I just mentioned a moment ago the inclusion of Rooster Teeth in HBO Max’s arsenal of content providers. Well that’s rolling over to DC Comics as well.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that at this year’s RTX Austin event, DC announced that it’s  teaming with Rooster Teeth to launch two new online comic book series based on the popular animated series RWBY and gen:LOCK.

RWBY(pronounced “Ruby”)  will be written by Marguerite Bennett, with art by Mirka Andolfo and Arif Prianto, and will follow the adventures of Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang as they continue to try to protect the world of Remnant from the supernatural threat of Grimm. Meanwhile,  gen:LOCK, by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing and Carlo Barbieri, will further explore the world of the animated show, in which a group of young pilots learn to control massive mecha warriors.

The Austin, Texas based  Rooster Teeth originally launched in 2003 with the web animation Red vs. Blue; RWBY launched in2013, with gen:LOCK arrived in January of this year. Beyond its animated projects, Rooster Teeth — a subsidiary of Otter Media, a WarnerMedia company — also maintains a YouTube network reaching more than 45 million subscribers, and mixes animated and live-action productions, produces the popular Rooster Teeth Podcast, and has been holding its own RTX event in Austin since 2011.

Rooster Teeth CEO and co-founder Matt Hullum said in a statement Quote “ connecting with DC and like-minded brands inside WarnerMedia has been a dream come true, and we’re excited for the future of Rooster Teeth,”. “The journey to bring out the RWBY and gen:LOCK comics has been an awesome and fun experience with DC and we can’t wait for fans to get their hands on them.” Unquote

The two series will be initially released as biweekly digital titles with an alternating schedule, meaning that each week will see the release of a new Rooster Teeth title; RWBY will debut first with a late August launch, followed by gen:LOCK in early September. Print editions of both series will come at a later date.

Well as we speak the masses, both well washed and unwashed are collecting in San Diego for COmic-con International. Well DC will be bringing the Batman experience to the con to celebrate Batman’s 80th anniversary. The Batman Experience Powered by AT&T, yeah, that’s the full name, is a pop up exhibit that will take up three levels of the Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park and will run from July 18 to 21st and will be open to convention goers and non convention goers alike. There will be TV and movie props like Michael Keaton’s Batman costume and rare comic book art. There will also be a gaming lounge with classic batman games as well as a quote “interactive punching bad experience” unquote that will allow visitors to punch out Batman’s rogues gallery and a VR skydiving experience through the Gotham skies.  This will all start with Batman’s induction into the Comicon Museum Character Hall of Fame..

Now a couple of bits of sad news, First, Mad Magazine will be leaving newsstands after the August issue and no new material except for end of the year specials will be produced, effectively ending the humor magazine after 67 years of publication. DC has announced that it will still publish classic content monthly through subscriptions and comic book shops. The magazine has been around since 1952 featuring it’s mascot Alfred E Neuman on the cover and featuring satire and parody as well as interesting features like Spy vs Spy. I think Weird Al Yankovic on twitter said it best quote “I am profoundly sad to hear that after 67 years, Mad Magazine is ceasing publication. I can’t begin to describe the impact it had on me as a young kid – it’s pretty much the reason I turned out weird. Goodbye to one of the all-time greatest American institutions. #ThanksMAD.”

Secondly,  Eddie Jones, who played Pa Kent on Lois and Clark The New Adventures of Superman has passed away. Other than the role of Pa Kent, Mister Jones appeared in such movies as C.H.U.D and the Rocketeer and had roles on TV shows like The Equalizer and The Invisible Man. Eddie Jones passed away on July 6th at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center at the age of 84. He is survived by his wife Anita Khan zadian-Jones and his sisters, nephews and nieces.

We start Marvel News with some breaking news.Taika Watiti has signed on to Write and Direct Thor 4. No official release or production date has been announced. Moving on to tother news

The Black Widow movie and indications that it seems to have wrapped up filming in Budapest and has moved to the United Kingdom to continue shooting. According to some slueting by the gww dot com, an instagram story from Black Widow star Florence Pugh seemed to indicate her presence in London. Now, the movie has yet to be announced officially, but that might be announcing it at Comicon International as I speak. However actor David Harbour ,who’s also in Black Widow told comic book dot com quote “This woman, Cate Shortland, who is directing this movie is one of the best directors I’ve ever worked with,” “She’s so, so smart, and makes such beautiful indie movies. The fact that you’d put someone like that at the helm of one of these huge action movies — and she pays such attention to the story and such attention to character — speaks volumes.”

The La Times reports that Marvel’s Runaways actor Kip Pardue has been found guilty of misconduct and fined six thousand dollars by SAG-AFTRA for sexually harassing actress Sarah Scott in May of 2018. The incident took place while both were filming scenes for an independent series pilot called Mogulettes. The fine could be cut in half is he takes an online workplace sexual harassment training module within 90 days. Kip plays the role of Frank Dean on Runaways. No word on any action taken against him by the production.

Axe body spray has teamed up with Marvel to roll out a new comic series featuring teenage superheroes called…The Fresh Men. The characters are five characters who happen to be freshmen in high school named Damien Garcia (Burner), Lyssa Jordan (Windchill), Danny Li (Kid Vanish), Emily Everheart (Override), and Tarell Taylor (Double Time). A trailer was released on youtube and it showcases how the team gets hooked up with Wakandan tech to take on Black Panther nemesis Ulysses Klaw and I guess smell good? No telling if this is just a one off or what. The trailer does point fans to the Axe website where people can register on a distribution list in exchange for a 30 day trial to Marvel unlimited.  It’s also been revealed that the series will have an accompanying soundtrack with hip hop artists and that is available to stream now. Go Go smelly rangers?

So the new Hellboy movie kinda bombed…all the way to Hell, but would have it gone differently with say… Jeremy renner in the role? In a recent interview with EW, Renner was quoted as saying quote “I was just reading the script and [thinking] like, ‘I don’t get this…’ I just couldn’t connect to it,” Renner told EW. “I said, ‘I can’t find a way in [to this character], I don’t know what I’d be doing,’ so I had to say no.” unquote

However, del Toro has rebutted this claim on twitter saying that quote Not the title role.  The role of Agent Myers… which went to Rupert Evans unquote So there you have it from the horse’s mouth. He wouldn’t have been the lead, he would have been the human sidekick. And it still wouldn’t have done well…sadly. However, if you want to see it and make your own judgement however, it’s on digital now and on dvd and blu ray on July 23rd.

By the way, Speaking of potential bombs, Selvester Stallone confirmed via Instagram that he is starting work on the Expendables 4 He said quote “All of those July 4th Fireworks got my mind going! I am starting to cook up The next adventure!” unquote So who will be Expendable this time? Father Time? The Grim Reaper? Stallone by the way, is 73 years old.

File this in the stupid things to get worked up over file, The live action Disney remake of The Little Mermaid has found it’s Ariel. Halle Bailey, the 19 year old actress and part of the sister singing duo Chole x Halle. Production of the movie will start next year and will be directed by Rob Marshall and will have Marshall, John DeLuca, Marc Platt and Lin-Manuel Miranda producing. All the original songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman will be in the film as well as new songs bly Menken with Lin Manuel Miranda..  No one else has been cast but rumors have linked Melissa McCarthy, Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay to roles in the film.

Of course, there has been outrage over the casting of Halle because various stupid reasons I won’t go into., so let me get on the soap box here and say…..Get over yourself.  A new version of something you loved as a kid doesn’t change the thing you love. They’re not gonna take the old movie and recolor the actors or discontinue the original. In fact Disney’s The Little Mermaid isn’t quite the original anyway, it’s based on a Hans Christen Anderson story and they completely changed the ending, which let’s say was much more depressing, so let us all just let…it..go. There are other things in the world to get mad at. Okay, I’m gonna get off my soapbox now …good thing it fits under my desk.

So before we get to our interviews, Disney is dusting off an old character, and I do mean old., before Mickey Mouse old. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was created by Walt Disney and predates Mickey by a couple of years. So he’s been on the shelf for years. Zoom forward to now and Disney Plus, which needs a lot of original content so it’s developing a new show centered around the character for the streaming service. They haven’t officially announced it, but writer Christopher Painter’s online resume has been updated and includes a listing for a new series called Oswald the Lucky Rabbit in the Animated Television section and listed as multiple episodes.

Disney Plus is set to launch on November twelfth, when they announce the show officially, we will let you know.

And now …here’s that interview with the guys from the Top Con and the Air Capital Con, take it away me….

And that brings us to the end of the comic book news. *Show Ender*
