Episode 34: The Orville Moves Picard to the Lower Decks & The Award For Best Comic News, Please?

Episode 34: The Orville Moves Picard to the Lower Decks

Tonight! San Diego Comicon gave us a lot of news, changes are coming to the Orville and we remember Rutger Haur and Jeremy Kemp on this SciFi edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to the SciFi edition of Multiverse Tonight. I’m your host, Thomas Townley. We have a really news heavy episode this time with lots of news from San Diego Comicon.I promised a lot of news would drop and boy was I right, we will have a lot more star trek news coming out of Star Trek Las Vegas in the next episode so stay tuned. Be sure to check out the comics edition of Multiverse Tonight,  that episode drops a couple of days after this one. So let’s get on with the news.

Star Trek

First off we have a little Discovery news: At the Star Trek panel, a new character was introduced Cleveland Book Booker, played by David Ajala. He is described as mischievous and a rule breaker. Also revealed is that the ship is a bit lost, apparently they don’t arrive at Terralyseum as planned. No word on who the new captain will be.

Next the panel moved on to the new animated show Lower Decks, the half hour animated show from Mike McMahan about Four Ensigns aboard the USS Cerritos a California class ship. By the way, I looked up Cerritos and found out that it’s a suburb of Los Angeles, California. formerly named Dairy Valley because of the preponderance of dairy farms in the area,   The four ensigns are Ensign Beckett Mariner (voiced by Tawny Newsome), Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), Ensign Tendi (Noël Wells), and Ensign Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). Beckett Mariner is described as someone who is very good at being in Starfleet but cares more about skateboarding than working, so she never gets promoted. Brad Boimler is booksmart, but way too in his head and nervous. Tendi is a super enthusiastic medical officer who starts the show on her first day in Starfleet. And Rutherford is compared to Geordi La Forge…except that he can never get anything done or solved. Plus, he just had a cyborg eye put in, so he’s still dealing with it. They have to deal with the senior officers, Captain Carol Freeman (voiced by Dawnn Lewis), Commander Jack Ransom (Jerry O’Connell), Lieutenant Shaxs (Fred Tatasciore), and Doctor T’ Ana a Catian.  (Gillian Vigman). McMahn told the audience that the show won’t poke fun at Star trek, the humor will come from the characters.

Finally the main attraction, Star trek Picard. Patrick Stewart was brought out and talked about his return to Star trek. The show will be quote “more lyrical, more grounded, and more dramatic.” unquote  Producer Akiva Goldsman went on to explain that the show will not be the Next Generation but more of a hybrid, slower more gentle more character based quote “a new kind of Star Trek show made by people who love old Star Trek shows.”

We also got introduced to new actors Alison Pill , who plays a yet unname researcher, Michelle Hurd, who said her character has a connection to Picards past and Santiago Cabrera an ex-Starfleet officer who is reluctant to join Picards quest. He kinda sounds like the Han Solo of the show. We also have word that there will be returning  characters to the cast. Marina Sirtis, Jonathan Frakes, Jeri Ryan ,Jonathan Del Arco and Brent Spiner will be a part of the show, the size of their roles is as of yet unknown. One thing we do know is that the show will start in 2020, probably right after Discovery’s third season.

We also got word on new Short Treks, we are getting six new episodes and Three will focus on the Enterprise and we know one will feature Spock and Number One trapped in a lift together and one will star H. Jon Benjamin and feature Tribbles, two will be animated and one will be a prelude to Star Trek Picard.

No News about any feature films.

But not all the news is about Trek is about what’s in front of the camera. IDW has announced another visit to the Mirror Universe, this time we visit The Mirror Voyager in Star Trek Voyage Mirrors and Smoke The one shot will be written by Paul Allor with art painted by JK Woodward and introduces quote Captain Janeway of the Voyager, a rebel ship stranded in the Delta Quadrant, far from the ruins of the Terran Empire. When Janeway crowns herself Pirate Queen of the Quadrant, the locals – including scavengers Neelix and Kes – won’t give up without a fight. Amidst this conflict, the crew of the Voyager has a second problem on their hands: just who is the Terran calling herself Annika Hansen, and can she be trusted?” The comic will be out in October. IDW also has future Mirror Universe one shots planned featuring the Original Series and DS9 Mirror crews.

Now while there is no Movie news from San Diego,Quentin tarantino, speaking with Deadline.com talked about what he expects from his Star Trek film quote “I will say one thing about Star Trek that I’ve been waiting for someone to bring up,” “I don’t know if I’ll do it or not. I’ve got to figure it out, but Mark wrote a really cool script. I like it a lot. There’s some things I need to work on but I really, really liked it. I get annoyed at Simon Pegg.””He doesn’t know anything about what’s going on and he keeps making all these comments as if he knows about stuff. One of the comments he said, he’s like ‘Well, look, it’s not going to be Pulp Fiction in space.’ Yes, it is! [laughs hard]. If I do it, that’s exactly what it’ll be. It’ll be Pulp Fiction in space. That Pulp Fiction-y aspect, when I read the script, I felt, I have never read a science fiction movie that has this sh*t in it, ever. There’s no science fiction movie that has this in it. And they said, I know, that’s why we want to make it. It’s, at the very least, unique in that regard.” Unquote  I’m guessing any movement on this will be awaiting the possible merger between CBS and Viacom. I also sounds like the film would probably be apart of the Kelvin Timeline. However he’s not happy about it, telling the Happy Sad Podcast quote “I still don’t quite understand, and JJ can’t explain it to me, and my editor has tried to explain it to me and I still don’t get it…about something happened in the first movie that now kind of wiped the slate clean. I don’t buy that. I don’t like it. I don’t appreciate it. I don’t — f*** that…I want the whole series to have happened, it just hasn’t happened yet. No, Benedict Cumberbatch or whatever his name is is not Khan, alright? Khan is Khan. And I told JJ, like, ‘I don’t understand this. I don’t like it.’ And then he was like, ‘Ignore it! Nobody likes it. I don’t understand it. Just do whatever you want. If you want it to happen the exact way it happens on the series it can.’” Unquote. So….what do you think of Quientin’s comments? Are you interested in his movie? Do you want to see it in the Kelvin Timeline?

Star Wars

We start Star Wars news with a confession from Margot Robbie, the breakout star of 2016’s Suicide Squad revealed to MTV News that shes neve seen Star Wars. Quote “I’ve never seen any Star Wars,” Robbie confessed to MTV News. “And I kind of don’t watch it now just because it infuriates people so much, like, ‘How? How have you never watched any Star Wars?’ And I just kinda wanna see how long I can make it now.” Unquote I guess my next question would be since she’s never actually seen any of it, what does she know about it just by picking things up second hand?

Mark Hammill was honored at SDCC with the Comic-con 2019 Icon Award by SDCC organizers. Mark in his acceptance speech told the crowd quote “Listen, I told you how lucky I feel to be able to do all of the things that I loved to do as a kid and get paid for it, so this just seems wildly excessive, but it is much appreciated,” Hamill said in his acceptance speech. “Thank you so much. I have to tell you, actors get up and they say ‘oh I have to share this with’ whoever their agent or whatever, but I … if it weren’t for you, I certainly wouldn’t be standing here. I started coming to these cons years before I met George [Lucas]. I remember, I was at the con when they said ‘did you hear? There’s going to be five thousand people this year’.” “So, I thank you very, very much and I just want you to remember, I am your buddy until the end. More than a buddy, I’m your best friend. I love you more than you will ever know. I will never let you go.”  Unquote The Icon Award is given to those who have been instrumental in bringing comics or popular arts to a wide audience. 10 others have been given the award including George Lucas, Stan Lee and Ray Bradbury.

The Rise of Skywalker is coming soon, but before we Rise with Skywalkers we should read with Skywalker.

Announced at San Diego, Marvel will released a four issue prelude series called Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker – Allegiance. The mini series will be written by Ethan Sacks and have art by Luke Ross.  No release date but we can probably expect it to come out in September. The movie will be released on December 20th.

Apparently The Rise of Skywalker will be something. According to Kevin Smith, in an interview with IGN he said quote ,”I have not seen it, but I was on set,” Smith revealed to IGN. “I went to London at one point and visited the set, [director] J.J. [Abrams] invited me, because I had the heart attack. When I had the heart attack, he wrote me and he was like, ‘You gotta pull through, man, so you can come visit Star Wars,’ and I was like, ‘Can I be in it?’ and he was like, ‘Come visit.’ I pulled through and I was the kind of asshole that wrote him back to be like, ‘Remember what you said?!’ and he was like, ‘Come on out.'”

“I got to hang out and be there on set and there was a scuttlebutt about a set there on Pinewood. A big set that they were like, ‘You have to see this. When you see it, it’ll melt your mind.’ And I was like, ‘What was it?’ and they were like, ‘Ask J.J.’ And so I asked J.J., ‘They keep telling me I should see the set,’ and he goes, ‘Don’t.’ I said, ‘Why?’ and he said, ‘It’s the last shot of the movie.’ So I was like, ‘Well now I really wanna see it,’ and he goes, ‘You don’t want this spoiled. You wanna be in a theater when this happens, trust me.’ And then other people on the crew were like, ‘Bro, I wish I hadn’t seen it. I’m glad I did, but it will melt your mind.'” Unquote

Saying that it will Melt your mind, that’s some claim Kevin. Let’s hope your correct.

So, have you wondered who the Knights of Ren are? We’ve gotten hints in the Force awakens and The last jedi. Well now a new comic will tell the tale of Kylo and the Knights in The Rise of Kylo Ren. The 4 issue mini series will be written by Charles Soule. The rise of Kylo ren will be launching in December before The Rise of Skywalker this winter.

Geek News

The Orville’s SDCC panel came with a bit of a surprise. A change of address. The show’s third season will be moving from Fox to Hulu when it returns in late 2020. The change was addressed by Series creator and Star Seth McFarlane who explained quote “The Orville has been a labor of love for me, and there are two companies which have supported that vision in a big way: 20th Century Fox Television, where I’ve had a deal since the start of my career, and FOX Broadcasting Company, now FOX Entertainment, which has been my broadcast home for over 20 years. My friends at the network understood what I was trying to do with this series, and they’ve done a spectacular job of marketing, launching and programming it for these past two seasons. But as the show has evolved and become more ambitious production-wise, I determined that I would not be able to deliver episodes until 2020, which would be challenging for the network. So we began to discuss how best to support the third season in a way that worked for the show. It’s exactly this kind of willingness to accommodate a show’s creative needs that’s made me want to stick around for so long. I am hugely indebted to Charlie Collier and FOX Entertainment for their generosity and look forward to developing future projects there. And to my new friends at Hulu, I look forward to our new partnership exploring the galaxy together,” unquote. This news has not gone over well with a segment of the fanbase, but most seem to be looking forward to the shows new home. By the way, Hulu is majority owned by Fox parent company Disney.

Hulu not only has The Orville, but just announced, Hulu will be the home to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series. The series is coming from Carlton Cuse and writer Jason Fuchs and will be produced at ABC Signature, the streaming division of ABC. Cuse and Fuchs will write, executive produce and showrun a modern adaptation of the classic story from Douglas Adams. No air date has been given.

Speaking of shows that have moved to online pastures, The Expanse season four premiere date has finally been announced. The series which was canceled by SyFY last year has been revived by Amazon after the fanbase got 100000 signatures to save the show. The show will come to the streaming service on December 13th.

Get ready to spend more on Halloween With Michael Myers. Universal Pictures has announced two new Halloween sequels one for 2020 and one for 2021 The first movie will be titled Halloween Kills and open on October 16, 2020 and the second called Halloween Ends will open on October 15, 2021. Borth will be directed by David Gordon Green and both will star Jamie Curtis with Nick Castle returning as Michael who comes back to Haddonfield for one fo r showdown with his sister.

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/

  • Actor Jeremy Kemp has passed away. He might best be known to Star Trek fans as Picard’s brother Robert Picard in the episode Family.  The actor was born in England in 1935. He had a long acting career starting in 1956. He’s had guest star roles on Space 1999, Hart to Hart, the Greatest American Hero, The Fall Guy, Murder She Wrote. And was Hissah Zul in the Conan TV series And the villain General Streck in the spy comedy Top Secret! He was 84.

Finally tonight, Actor Rutger Hauer has passed away. The Dutch actor is probably best known to geek fans as the replicant leader Roy Batty from 1982’s Blade Runner. Rutger was born in the Netherlands in 1944 and started acting in Dutch tv back in 1969. He came to American audiences in 1981 in the movie Nighthawks. Episode 35: An Award full of Comicon News

Tonight! IOur Comic news cup runeth over, plus we look at who walked away with Eisner Awards on this comics edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to Multiverse Tonight! I’m your host Thomas Townley. Well San Diego Comic Con dumped a lot of news. If you didn’t listen to the sci fi edition, just go back one episode and listen to a lot of good news there.

Marvel

We all miss Stan Lee since he passed away last year. At this years SDCC, Stan’s company POW! Entertainment announced the development of a new animated series, The Amazing Stan, produced in conjunction with Pure Imagination Studios. The series will focus on a young Stan Lee in grade school showing off his imagination at a young age. the constant dreamer who treats his childhood like a testing ground for adventures that will one day fuel his world-famous characters. Stan and his friends imagine themselves in and out of these amazing experiences as they learn to take risks, explore new ideas, and never ever give up. It’s very similar to the old Fox cartoon Bobby’s World. There is no word on where or when the show will air.

Doctor Doom is getting his own comic series. Doctor Doom will be written by AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire creator Chris Cantwell and have art by Salvador Larroca. The series will find Victor Von Doom at a bit of a crossroads in his life, According to the release quote “After spending much of his time warning against a trillion-dollar global effort to create the first ‘artificial’ black hole, Doom is now wrestling with visions of an entirely different life and a better future. But when a massive terrorist attack results in massive casualties, Doom is the prime suspect. What will happen when Doctor Doom is running from the law — and himself?” Doctor Doom IS The Prisoner!

Well congrats to Avengers Endgame for finally crossing that finish line and passing Avatar to become the No.1 Grossing Film of All Time (not adjusted for inflation) Avatar will probably have a chance to get that back, a re release of Avatar is expected before Avatar 2 comes out.

While we’re on the subject,

In Endgame, one of the best moments was the handoff of the title of Captain America to the Falcon. The Falcon will now return in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier on Disney Plus. Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, speaking to MTV news at Comiccon,Mackie did confirm that he will be wearing a Captain America suit in the show. Saying quote “It looks really good.” unquote

So let’s get into that post endgame Phase of Marvel. At the Marvel Hall H Panel,Kevin Feige, president of Marvel studios laid it all out first up Black Widow on May Day of 2020. The Eternals on November 6, 2020. Shang-chi and the legend of the ten rings, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness on May 7, 2021. Thor Love & Thunder. Also revealed was a new Blade movie starring Maherala Ali. Also still in the offing are Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel 2 Guardians 3 and Spider-man 3. Fiege also dropped word that they’re working on Fantastic Four and X-Men getting MCU movies at some point and then that an all new all different Avengers team movie will arrive at some point too. I say make it Avengers vs X-Men.

On the Disney Plus side we have The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Wandavision, Loki, Hawkeye and what if…

What if is rather interesting, it’s an animated series and will have a slew of guest stars. The list includes (Michael B. Jordan), (Sebastian Stan), (Josh Brolin), (Mark Ruffalo), (Tom Hiddleston), (Samuel L. Jackson), (Chris Hemsworth), (Hayley Atwell),  (Chadwick Boseman), (Karen Gillan), (Jeremy Renner), (Paul Rudd)(Michael Douglas), (Neal McDonough), (Dominic Cooper), (Sean Gunn), (Natalie Portman), (David Dastmalchian), (Stanley Tucci), (Taika Waititi), (Toby Jones), (Djimon Hounsou), (Jeff Goldblum), (Michael Rooker), and (Chris Sullivan). All coming back to voice their MCU roles with Jeffery Wright narrating the series as The Watcher. We will get stories like What if Peggy Carter became the super soldier. I’m very much looking forward to it.

Here’s something weird for you. A woman in Nebraska has decried that a statue as demonic and anti christian because she believes it’s representative of the Devil. Thing is, it’s a statue of Spider-man’s hands in the web shooter posse with webs coming out of the wrists.

According to the Lincoln Journal Star reports that an email was sent to Lincoln mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird from an unidentified woman  saying that quote “It is a sculpture of two hands open, painted Red & Black, and formed into Devil Horns, she also called the six foot sculpture ugly and asked that it be moved because it’s a hate crime against the church,

The statue is one of 50 statues in an art project called Serving Hands Lincoln. The city will not be seeking to remove the sculpture which will be available for auction on October 25 to benefit the non profit organization Campus Life.

DC news

Lucifer is in its final season. The final season was originally going to be 10 episodes long. But Netflix has announced that it will pick up the show for an additional six episodes to help give the show proper time to wind down. Reminds me that I have to catch up.

This fall will see the end of Arrow. The hit CW show is ending after eight seasons. Entertainment Weekly as part of an Arrowverse cover shoot with the magazine released a video https://twitter.com/EW/status/1152057975487418376

Work on this last season has been a bit exciting for series star Stephan Amell, so much that the night before he was set to tape his first scene for the season he was having difficulty sleeping. He tweeted at 102 Am quote Going to have a tough time sleeping tonight. Work tomorrow is going to be pretty fucking cool. Well let’s see if he goes out with a bang.  Arrow’s final season begins on October 15th.

Looks like James Olsen might be going back to Metropolis, according to Entertainment Weekly Mehcad Brooks will be leaving Supergirl in the first half of season five. Brooks will be leaving the show to focus on feature films, developing his own cable series and working on a book. No word on how his character will leave, but according to showrunners Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller, the door will remain open for Mechad to return.  A polished businesswoman and heir to a Central American tech empire, Andrea Rojas (aka Acrata) is now making a hostile advance into the world of media. Unapologetic and unafraid to make waves, she also holds a mystical secret. Julie Gonzalo will first appear as Rojas in the season premiere. British actor Staz Nair from Game of Thrones will play a very different character than a Dothraki warrior, Staz will play William Dey a hardened reporter who seems to be a cynic and a sellout who looks down on Kara’s idealism. Dey’s not here to make friends, he just wants to get the story, but his criminal underworld ties could be problematic. He sounds like a very shallow character to me, one created to just get in trouble so he can be saved. Supergril come back on October sixth.

At SDCC’s Batwoman panel, it was revealed that the series will introduce Tommy Elliot, the man who will eventually become the super villain Hush. Hush first appeared as part of a 12 part story in Batman issues 608 to 619.

And while we’re on the Arrowverse, we have to talk about this year’s big crossover. This year it will be their version of Crisis on Infinite Earths. Brandon Routh will be back this time as Superman and at SDCC it was revealed that he would be a Superman based on Kingdom Come. It’s unclear how this Superman will fit into the crossover. The crossover will debut across Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and the new series Batwoman later this year.

Now over to the DC Universe, An accident has taken the life of Titans special effects coordinator Warren Appleby has passed away after being struck by a heavy object while filming the series. According to a report from TMZ the incident took place at a test facility where the crew tests out stunts they plan to enact out in the show.  The stunt included a car flipping onto its side unfortunately a piece of shrapnel flew off and struck Mr. Appleby in the head. He died in route to a Toronto hospital. Warner Bros Television issued a statement about this tragedy quote “We are heartbroken and devastated by the passing of our treasured colleague, special effects coordinator Warren Appleby, after an accident which occurred at a special effects facility during the preparation and testing for an upcoming shoot. Warren is beloved by all who worked with him during an impressive 25-year career in television and motion pictures. The executive producers, along with everyone, in Titans family, Warner Bros. Television Group and DC UNIVERSE, wish to express our deepest condolences, and heartfelt love and support, to Warren’s family and friends at this most difficult time.”

Production was shut down for two days and Canada’s Ministry of Labour is now investigating the accident.

In comics news, DC Comics has announced a new Birds of Prey Series that will star Harley Quinn, Black Canary and Huntress. The new comic will be out in October and will be written by Brian Azzarello with art by Emanuela Lupacchino, Ray McCarthy and trish Mulvihill.

Mr. Azzarello in the press release said quote “It’s cool to have a story to tell about these characters I’ve never worked on before, with Ema, a terrific artist I’ve never worked with before. Having Harley involved screws with the new BOP dynamic—hell, with every dynamic. She’s chaos, but she might be the most together member of the team. Canary, Huntress, and Montoya have a lot of damaged baggage. Ema and I are gonna unpack it.” The plot according to the press release is quote  “Black Canary’s life has spiraled out of control: her personal life is going through the wringer and her band is in crisis. An old flame resurfaces only to flicker out and set Dinah on an all-new mission against an all-new opponent: Las Esposas de la Muerte. The only thing Dinah can be grateful for is the fact that she’s not alone, as Huntress finds herself on a collision course with Black Canary’s quarry at Detective Montoya’s urging. Meanwhile, Harley Quinn has resurfaced outside of Gotham City and out of the Suicide Squad, with a new lease on life that is sure to make everyone’s life more complicated. And that’s only the first five pages of this dynamic new ongoing series!”

Good News Tom King fans. Tom King is going to be writing the New Gods of movie. King will be collaborating with New Gods director Ava DuVernay on the script, although it’s not known if Ava will be co writing or just giving her input. King is will suited for the task having written Mister Miracle. There is still no word on when filming might start or a release date.

DC Universe Online is coming to Nintendo Switch on August 6th. The game launched in 2011 and is free to play. The one setback is if you have an account on another platform, you won’t be able to port it over to the Switch.

Batman Beyond is finally getting a release on Bluray. Warner Bros Home Entertainment announced at SDCC that the series will becoming to Bluray on October 29th and digital download on October fifteenth. This year marks the series 20th anniversary. All 52 episodes will be on a four disc set along with two bonus discs and a remastered version of Batman Beyond Return of the Joker.

The Eisner Awards were handed out at San Diego Comic Con.
