Episode 36:Star Trek on Summer Vacation & Kevin Smith Talks a lot, Ande Parks Talks a little

Episode 36

Tonight! We have news from Star Trek Las Vegas, we discover a cookbook at the Galaxy’s Edge and Will Wheaton files a lawsuit on this SciFi edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Well, welcome to the SciFi edition of Multiverse Tonight. Another heavy news episode this time.Quite a bit from Star Trek Las Vegas this time. But before we get to the news, I got a bit of good news, this week. Recently, Apple updated their podcast categories and one of the categories I put this show in is Entertainment News. Well this week Multiverse Tonight showed up in the Apple Podcasts charts for Entertainment News and topped out at Number 5! Thanks Apple! Yeah, I know, charts don’t matter, but it’s still kinda neat.

Star Trek

CBS and Viacom are moving one step closer to merging. Several sources are reporting that a tentative deal has been reached to make Viacom CEO Bob Bakish the new CEO of the combined entity with the current acting CBS CEO Joe Ianniello going to run the CBS assets, except Showtime and Simon & Shuster in a senior role of unknown title. This deal is still a long way to go.

All right, now that we have that little business update. Let’s get to the real news. At the Television Critics Association Summer Press tour, Star Trek Discovery executive producer and co showrunner Michelle Paradise confirmed the Discovery is in the 32nd century to stay. And they will have a new captain. Will it be Saru? Michael? A 32nd century resident? A sentient hyper evolved tribble? Personally, I’m hoping for the tribble

She also discussed how Discovery and Picard are both different and both similar. Saying quote “ I would say that it is in production, sort of size and scope, [Picard is] probably more similar to Discovery.”  But she also said that the show will have some similarities to The Next Generation. Saying quote “In terms of the characters and the nature of the storytelling, [Picard is] probably more like Next Generation. But of course, we’re a number of years later now so there are some shifts in the storytelling style but I think it’s a really nice hybrid of the two.”

According to Film Music Reporter, Discovery composer Jeff Russo will continue being the scorer for the CBS All Access Star Trek Universe as it was revealed that he will be scoring Star Trek Piczard. Russo has previously scored FX’s Legion and Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy

Also revealed was that the Section 31 series won’t go into production until the production end of season three of discovery.

During the CBS All Access executive session they confirmed that Star Trek Picard will be in the first quarter of 2020 and Discovery’s third season will be coming out later in 2020.

We also have some merchandise news. First off the Star Trek Discovery Season 2 Bluray will be out on November 12th. The Bluray will include all 14 episodes plus the short treks Runaway and the brightest star. Plus two hours of special features including featurettes, audio commentaries on four episodes, cast interviews, deleted scenes, and a gag reel.

Star trek Picard has some merch as well. The series will have a prequel comic and novel. Starting in November IDW gives us Star Trek Picard Countdown, a three issue comic book mini series from Mike Johnson and Kirsten Beyer. All we got of a plot is that it focuses on a mission that changes Picard’s life.

After that, Simon & Shusters’s Gallery Books imprint releases the novel The Last Best Hope written by Una McCormack. Which will lead directly into the series introducing us to the characters.

Also announced are a couple of books set in the Kelvin Timeline. The Order of Peace is written by Alan Dean Foster and More Beautiful Than Death by David Mack. The Order of Peace will be out in April of 2020 and More Beautiful than Death will be out the following august.

If you want some new Star Trek reading in the more immediate future. Out right now is Star Trek Discovery The Enterprise War by John Jackson Miller. On August thirteenth is Star Trek The Antares Maelstrom by Greg Cox. October 1st will see a reissue of Gene Roddenberry’s novelization of Star Trek The Motion Picture. October 8th has David Mack’s Next Generation novel Collateral Damage. And in December a new Star Trek Discovery novel Dead Endless by Dave Galanter.

And if you need something to drink while you watch StaR Trek Picard or get hammered enough for Discovery, Star Trek Wines has just want you need The 2016 Château Picard Bordeaux is an 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot blend that is subtly smoky and spicy with a bright, fresh, clean-tasting style. The wine spends 14 months in oak, 70% seasoned and 30% new. The United Federation of Planets wine is a 2017 Old Vine Zinfandel from across the Dry Creek & Russian River Valleys in Sonoma County, CA. It is a blend of 87% Zinfandel, 12% Petite Sirah and 1% Syrah. It has aromatics of concentrated strawberry, blackberry and plum preserves with a chewy-layered mid-palate filled with hints of white peppercorn, sweet red and black fruit. And of course you’ll need something to put that in, Star Trek Shop at shop.startrek.com has Chateau Picard Wine Glasses, tote bags, and shirts.

One of the surprises in the Picard trailer was the return of Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine. We would later learn that Jonathan Del arco was returning as Hugh, Riker and Troi will show up, Data will show up, could anyone else make an appearance? How bout The Doctor? During an appearance at the London Film and Comic Con, Robert Picard spoke to TrekkieGirls dot com, where he revealed that he’s in early discussion to appear in the next season of the show. Quote “I am pleased that they (CBS) have expressed interest in me,” “They have reached out to my agent about next season. So I’m looking forward to seeing what it is. As you know I play two characters, primarily the Doctor but also Lewis Zimmerman. Lewis Zimmerman, the engineer who created the Doctor’s program, certainly would have aged. He’s in the same timeline as Patrick Stewart and all the [Star Trek: The Next Generation] folk. The Doctor, of course, like Data doesn’t age, but there are ways to address that, as we all know. I joked the other day that my daughter does visual effects, that’s exactly what she does is digitally correct actors so I said, ‘If they hire the two of us, she could make me look 25 years younger. Anyway, it will interesting to see when something happens, if something but, but I might have a chance to be onscreen with Jeri again. It would be an honor and a delight, obviously, to have scenes with Patrick Stewart so, you know, we’ll keep our fingers crossed.” unquote Well if not, he’s always welcome to make a return appearance on The Orville.

Back at Star Trek Las Vegas, it has been revealed that Star Trek online’s Age of Discovery storyline will be coming to an end with the launch of the next story called Awakening. When Awakening releases this fall, players will warp to the year 2410, where they will embark on a mission to recover stolen Mycelial technology from J’Ula and the Klingons, with the help of Lt. Commander Paul Stamets (voiced by Anthony Rapp from Star Trek: Discovery) in holographic form. Captains can also access Awakening to participate in a series of exciting patrols to repair time rifts, a brand new Task Force Operation and a special Mycelial Event which rewards players with a new T6 Elachi ship for completing mission

Here’s the trailer…

Awakening launches for PC players on September 10th.

We also got some new info on Star trek Lower Decks. At the Star Trek Las Vegas panel for the show, series creator Mike Mcmahan described the work that the ship the USS Cerritos is involved in, basically the menial work that keeps the Federation running.  Mike told the audience quote “The specialty of the Cerritos is second contact,” “Second contact you’re showing up to the planet, you’re finding the good places to eat… you’re like the Yelp of Starfleet.” Mike compared the storytelling of Lower Decks to the subplots on the Next Generation saying quote “My favorite thing about Star Trek is the B stories,” “Yeah, Picard is being tortured for information, great, love that story. But then Data accidentally locked himself in a bathroom. That’s what I’m there for.” A few more details were giving like the menial tasks of the show’s ensigns include things like quote “scraping carbon off slightly harder carbon” “cleaning the holodeck.” unquote By the way, it’s been 45 years since the last Star Trek animated series and this one looks like it was worth the wait.

Star Wars

So you watched the Last Jedi and you remember one of the most iconic moments was Vice Admiral Holdo who we’ve had no time to develop any feelings toward (just sayin) using the last resistance capital ship to punch a hole in The First Orders huge ship. So how did she get the idea to do this? We find out in the Star wars age of resistance special. The comic has three stories, one with Maz Kanata, one with BB-8 and one with a young Holdo. The comic is available now.

So here’s some news to interest you into subscribing to Disney Plus. Cnet reports that Disney Plus will have Star Wars episodes one to seven at launch as well as Rogue One. The last Jedi and solo a star wars story have previous commitments to Netflix, but will probably show up on Disney Plus within the year. The new movie Rise of Skywalker will be the first of the franchise to show up on Disney Plus exclusively.  We will get a first look at Disney Plus at Disney’s D23 Expo on Friday August 23rd.

We have a progress report on The Mandalorian from Jon Favreau. He recently let it be known on Instagram that the show is in the process of being scored.  With an artist rendering of IG-11, a bounty hunter similar to IG-88 with the caption Scoring season one of #TheMandalorian.

Speaking of Jon Favreau and The Mandalorian. Jon spoke with GQ Middle East about the upcoming series and revealed what he learned in a talk with George Lucas and how he applied what he learned to the show. Quote: “We had a long talk with each other,” “One thing he said to me was, ‘Remember, Jon, the real audience for all stories and all myths is the kids that are coming of age,’ because he’s really a Joseph Campbell adherent.”

Joseph Campbell,by the way was a scholar who studied literature and mythology, and first coined the phrase and the corresponding motifs of “The Hero’s Journey,”  Favreau continued saying quote

“We enjoy the stories as adults, but really, storytelling is about imparting the wisdom of the previous generations on to the children who are becoming adults, and giving them a context for how to behave and how to learn the lessons of the past without making the mistakes on their own. That’s the hope, that you can teach them how to avoid all the hardship but garner all the wisdom,”

The Mandalorian launches with Disney Plus on November 12th.

Now we’re cooking. Disney and Insight Editions are publishing a cookbook called Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge — The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook. The book is Written by Marc Sumerak (Hidden Universe Travel Guides: The Complete Marvel Cosmos) and Chelsea Monroe-Cassel, who has previously worked on a number of fantasy-themed cookbooks, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook will allow fans to recreate the food available at the Disney attraction taken from the viewpoint of Strono Cookie Tuggs Maz Kanata’s one time head chef.  After working for Maz, he traveled the galaxy picking up food tips and then writing them down in a cookbook. The 176 page book will be released on November 5th.

SciFi Geek

Wil Wheaton has lawyered up. Wil and his loan out company Media Dynamics filed a lawsuit against Legendary Geek & Sundry for an alleged breach of contract  claiming that he’s been shorted profits from a web series. Here’s his case. Wil claims Legendary back in 2015 hired him to create, write, executive produce and host a web series called Titansgrave: The Ashes of Valkana, for which he’d be paid $50,000 and get a 50 percent net profit from the series. Legendary had the exclusive rights for distribution and promoting, but were supposed to consult Wil before doing so. The actor now claims that Legendary didn’t talk to him before negotiating agreements with Sinclair Broadcasting, Hulu and Pluto TV.

Wil presumes that Legendary has been collecting large fees from those deals and so he is therefore owed a share of those monies, but Legendary won’t let him look at the books. Therefore Wheaton is seeking at least one hundred thousand dollars  in damages and asking the court to order a full audit of the books. We will continue to follow this case as it goes forward.

Guillermo Del Toro has been honored with a star on the hollywood walk of fame. The man behind movies like Hellboy, Pacific Rim, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, and Crimson Peak received the 2,669th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at a ceremony presided over by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Rana Ghadban, director J.J. Abrams, and singer/songwriter Lana Del Rey. Guillermo’s next movie is which he wrote the screenplay and produced is  Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which is now out in theaters.

If you want to get your Doctor Who on, better prepared to subscribe to a new service. In a major deal with BBC Studios, HBO Max will be the exclusive streaming home for the series. The new service will have all 11 seasons of the show at launch in Spring 2020 and will be the exclusive Streaming video on demand home for future seasons after they’ve aired on BBC America. Additionally, HBO Max has licensed 700 episodes of landmark BBC series like The Office, Top Gear, Luther and The Honorable Woman.

The new CBS supernatural thriller Evil will apparently try to avoid the Exorcism of the week trope according to creators and executive producers Robert and Michelle King.

Speaking at the TCA session for the new show. Evil is about a skeptical female clinical psychologist (Katja Herberts) who joins a priest-in-training (Mike Colter) as they investigate supposed miracles, demonic possessions, and other extraordinary occurrences. Robert King said quote “We are trying to avoid exorcism of the week,” “The second episode is about miracles. It’s about those question marks in life that you don’t quite know how they happen, a school where all the girls start laughing, and it seems to be almost viral. The other thing is you’re looking at life, and you’re seeing evils often not with a capital E but with a small e, the boss who throws things at his employees. Where does that fit in?… What our people are about is just figuring out what is genetically based villainy, if you want to use that word instead of evil, and what is something that’s even bigger, something more supernatural?  But also looking at hope.” The show will also not be gory Michelle King speaking about concerns that the show would be gorrie as the season when on said quote “I don’t anticipate it becoming more gory than what you saw in the pilot. That’s probably tonally what we’re looking at” The show will begin airing on September 26th on CBS.

Stephen King is writing a continuation to The Stand for teh CBS all access miniseries adaptation.  The new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand will have a new ending written by the master of horror himself, it was announced at the TCA session for CBS All Access. Mr. King will be writing the last episodes of the nine episode series providing quote “a new coda that won’t be found in the book”.

“For fans of the book who have wondered what became of the survivors of the stand, this episode will contain a story that takes us beyond the book to answer those questions,” . “A continuation to The Stand; we can’t wait to share that with the world.” unquote CBS All Access EVP Julie McNamara told the attendees. The mini series will star James Marsden, Amber Heard, Odessa Young and Henry Zaga. No release date has been announced.

Also announced at the TCAs by CBS All Access is a new series adapting The Man Who Fell to Earth the novel by Walter Tevis that was turned into the  David Bowie movie . The series will be written and co produced by Alex Kurrtzman and Jenny Lumet. THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH will follow an alien who arrives on Earth at a turning point in human evolution and must confront his own past to determine our future. The series will be co-produced by CBS Television Studios and TANDEM Productions, a STUDIOCANAL Company, in association with Secret Hideout and Timberman/Beverly. STUDIOCANAL owns the rights for both Walter Tevis’ book as well as the iconic Nicolas Roeg film with David Bowie. Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet told the audience quote “Walter Tevis’ visionary novel gave us a tech god Willy Wonka from another planet, brought to life by David Bowie’s legendary performance, that foretold Steve Jobs’ and Elon Musk’s impacts on our world,” said executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet. “The series will imagine the next step in our evolution, seen through the eyes of an alien who must learn what it means to become human, even as he fights for the survival of his species.” No word on when it’s expected to air.

The Dune movie  has shifted. By a month from November 20th to December 18, 2020. No word on what movie will air on that date instead.  In it’s new slot it will face off against Steven Spieberg’s West Side Story, Paramount’s Coming to America 2 and Sony’s uncharted with Tom Holland.

And sadly, we end tonight remembering Actress Barbara March ,who passed away on August 11th at the age of 65. Barbara will best be known for her portrayal of Lursa the Klingon sister of Duras from the Star Trek The Next Generation episodes Firstborn and Redemption, the Deep Space Nine episode Past Prologue and Star Trek Generations. She was a classically trained actor starting in her home country of Canada, she also was a playwright and novelist as well. She is survived by her husband Alan Scarfe and her daughter Antonia and her son Jon. She died after a battle with cancer.

Episode 37:

Tonight! Kevin Smith talks Snyder cut, Disney Plus gets bundled, and we look back at Smallville Con with an interview with Ande Parks on this comics edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to Multiverse Tonight! I’m your host Thomas Townley. You’re now listening to the Number 7 podcast on Apple Podcasts Entertainment News charts! Too be honest, I don’t expect to stay on the chart, but it’s kinda neat to be able to say I’m a top 10 podcast.

This episode has plenty of news and an interview with Ande Parks that I recorded back at the Smallville Con.

DC

Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman for a generation will finally get to step in front of the camera. Announced at the Television Critics Association summer event, Kevin will appear in this year’s Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths as an older Bruce Wayne. Could he be the Arrowverse’s Bruce Wayne? Also announced in the crossover are characters from Black Lightning and Burt Ward, who will be appearing as an aged Robin.

The departing Arrow star Stephen Amell is working on the final episodes of the series, while reflecting on the series at the TCA summer event revealed his favorite episode of the series. Season 2 episode 20, Seeing Red is one that Amell said was quote a” ..really beautiful episode” unquote The episode saw touching moments between Oliver and his mother. And saw Moira revealing that she knows that Oliver is the Arrow and that she couldn’t be more proud of him.

We got some info on Batwoman from the TCA event. One she won’t get the red wig until episode 3. The first few episodes are an origin story and she won’t initially even have her own costume. Initially she will have a modified suit from her cousin Bruce after she comes across Bruce’s secret that he WAS the Batman. It was also revealed that Tommy Elliot, who becomes the villain Hush will show up episode two. Also revealed was that the villain for the season will be Magpie. A jewel thief who developed an obsession with beautiful things while curating Gotham’s museum.

Black Lightning will be returning sooner than expected. The show’s season three premiere has been moved up to October 7th. Batwoman starts the chain on October 6th, than Black Lightning, Than the Flash on October 8th, Arrow on the fifteenth and Legends of tomorrow beginning in January 2020.

What was your favorite?

Todd Phillips’ Joker is receiving some high praise. Cameron Bailey, the cohead and artistic director of the Toronto International Film Festival  has called it a quote “cinematic achievement on a high level,” unquote . The film festival will screen the movie, which will be the first comic book movie screened as a Gala presentation. Speaking with the Toronto Sun, Bailey said quote “First of all it’s terrific. So it should play on our largest stage,“”But it’s a really original take on comic book movies and on the Joker character in particular. It’s not based on an existing story, it has one of the greatest actors in modern cinema, Joaquin Phoenix, in the lead, and Robert De Niro is in it as well, one of the best actors that has ever lived.” unquote

About the tone Bailey said quote

“It’s set in the late ’70s, early ’80s and it feels like it was made then. It’s gritty in its look,“”It has references to Martin Scorsese’s filmmaking and it feels like a cinematic achievement on a high level. Although it’s working with very populist material, it has great ambition. That’s why it’s a Gala.” The movie opens in theaters on October 4th.

One of the holy grails of hollywood has been a Zack Snyder cut of Justice League. It’s existence has been argued about since the movie was Zach Snyder relinquished directing during post production in order to deal with the death of his daughter. Joss Whedon than took on post production which included reshoots. The film didn’t do what was expected at the box office and the DC Cinematic Universe kinda fell apart. That brings us to the present day. Kevin Smith, speaking with CinemaBlend’s ReelBleed podcast said that it exists saying quote “I’ve not seen it firsthand,” “And also to be clear, I know Zack, but it’s not like, ‘We’re f****** tight son!’ … That being said, I’ve spoken now to enough people at various levels in that production. There IS a Snyder cut. For sure. That’s not a mythical beast. It exists. Now, it’s not a finished movie by any stretch of the imagination. There were things that went away from the story that they shot that didn’t wind up going into (visual) effects or anything like that. So I would assume, based on what I’ve been told, that large sections of that Snyder Cut are, you know, pre-viz (with) a lot of green screen. We’re not talking a finished movie. When people hear ‘Snyder Cut’ in their heads, they think about, like, a DVD they’ve seen of an extended cut or something that’s finished. The ‘Snyder Cut’ that, again I haven’t seen, but the one I’ve heard everyone speak of was never a finished film. It was a movie that people in production could watch and fill in the blanks. It was certainly not meant for mass consumption.””I feel confident that the audience could handle that cut of the movie without being like… I think there’s a common thought process, probably within the studio – and again, no studio has said this to me, but I would assume that they’re like, ‘We can’t show people this,” “Yes, there is a Snyder Cut, but no audience would be able to look at this and see what the director’s intent was.’ I disagree. That would seem like common wisdom because everyone always wants to put their best foot forward. But I think the audience now, particularly the audience that would consume the Snyder Cut and discuss it at great length, can watch a work print. They can watch a work-in-progress and fill in the blanks in their heads.” “Every studio likes to make money,” “They do multiple incarnations of movies on video all the time. This could just be one more of those. All they have to do is lend their audience a little more credence to be like, ‘Look, they’ll get it.’ Put up a bunch of f****** disclaimers, including one from Zack himself at the head of it going, ‘Obviously the movie wasn’t finished, but here’s what we were thinking.’ There’s definitely a way to do it … They could definitely shoot a version of that flick where, you know, they put [Snyder] into it explaining what would have went here, what went there.” unquote

Man can that man talk. Here’s the ten penny version of that whole long speech. In other words, yes it exists, will it ever see the light of day? Probably not.

And speaking of things that we never will see. Ben Affleck’s version of The Batman. What would it have been about? Cinematographer Robert Richardson would have worked on the movie and he spoke with the HappySadConfused podcast, where he revealed that the movie would have taken Batman into the depths of Arkham Asylum. Quote “I wanted to shoot Batman with Ben [Affleck] cause that was the next film we had. There was a script, but not a loved script. There was a lot of work he was doing to it to change it.” “He was going into the more insanity aspects… He was entering more into the Arkham, he’s going into where everyone was bad.” unquote Unfortunately, Ben Affleck couldn’t quite get to a state of happy with the script and Affleck hung it up. It’s a shame. Kinda sounds interesting.

And while we’re on The Batman reports are surfacing that Warner Bros is considering adding BlackKklansman star John David Washington to the movie. What character he’s being considered for is not known but it’s possible that he could play Harvey Dent.Interesting enough he’s currently filming Tenet with The Batman’s Batman Robert Pattinson. So I guess they might have time to work on their chemistry together.

Marvel

ABC is in active talks to bring a new show with a female superhero to the network. ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke spoke to Deadline dot com and said quote “I have spoken to Marvel and we are in active talks about one project in particular.” unquote and While she wouldn’t give away any details, she said the character would be quote “something brand new, mostly” unquote and that the series would fit in with its strategy of female-focused superheroes. The networks current MCU show Agents of Shield is currently winding down with it’s seventh and last season.

Disney Plus is getting ready to come out in a big way. First off, it’s been revealed at the latest Disney investors meeting that Disney Plus will be available in a bundle with Hulu and ESPNPlus for the low low price of 12.99 and the first people who will be able to subscribe to Disney Plus will be members of D23, the Disney fan club. Rob Liefeld thinks he’s found a role for Dwayne The rock Johnson in the MCU. posting to instagram the comic creator posted. Quote Dearest @therock based on reports of outstanding chemistry between you and a familiar friend, I believe the next logical step is for you to join the Marvel Universe as Garrison Kane in a future Deadpool installment,” Liefeld wrote in the Instagram post. “You’re a natural and Kane is already celebrated by millions of comics fans who have thrilled to his adventures since I first introduced him in X-Force #2! Your pal, Rob!” Unquote

Would you like to see The Rock in Deadpool 3?

Speaking of actors. Amanda Seyfried speaking with MTV revealed that she turned down the chance for a major Marvel Cinematic Universe role because she didn’t want to be tied down by the role. Quote “I turned down [a Marvel Studios movie] once and they haven’t called back since,” Seyfried told MTV. “And it was a big’un. I don’t regret it because I didn’t want to be green for six months out of every year. They tell beautiful stories through superheroes, and my daughter’s now really obsessed with superheroes now, and part of me wishes I’d done it, but the other part of me is like ‘I had a life to live’ and I don’t think I would’ve been happy.”

So…she didn’t want to be green …could the role have been Gamora?

According to the New York Post, the New York City Council voted to approve a proposal to co-name University Avenue between Brandt Place and West 176th “Stan Lee Way.” The proposal still needs approval from Mayor Bill de Blasio. Lee formerly lived at 1720 University Place. He attended high school at DeWitt Clinton HS in the Bronx.

Lee died in November 2018.
