Show Notes: Episode 60: What Comes After Picard & Episode 61: Howard the Duck Gets No Respect

Tonight! Picard comes back big,Obi-Wan goes back to the hanger and the Peacock is coming. All this and more on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Hello and welcome to episode 60 of Multiverse Tonight!

Have you seen Star Trek Picard. Here’s a non spoiler review. It felt well put together, a lot of what I thought happened. Especially in regards to Data. One of the few gripes I have was the theme music was…well…let me just put it this way. I don’t think anyone is going to be humming this tune. But I’m very interested to see where the show goes, I hear that the first three episodes act as the pilot episode in whole.

Star Trek

We start  Star Trek news with Picard’s Jeri Ryan, the actress talked with GamesRadar about how Seven of Nine has changed since the last we saw of her and what she thinks of Picard quote “I wouldn’t say there’s a huge affinity because Seven’s gotten pretty jaded over the last 20 years,” “She’s seen a lot of bad stuff, and she’s very much hardened from when we saw her 20 years ago. The universe has kind of gone to hell in a handbasket and she holds Starfleet and the Federation in a large part responsible for that. Initially, I think she sort of sees Picard as a representative of that, so she’s not in ‘idol worship/he’s a hero’ mode when we first meet her. I think that makes it more interesting.”

GamesRadar also spoke with the other major Borg character on the Picard Show,  Jonathan Del Arco. He told them Quote “In the story you’ll see it’s a very logical conclusion to where Hugh ends up,” But what I didn’t know were the circumstances of the world or how that affected how he ended up. He’s changed so much physically, and emotionally, and grown up like other people grow up. How many people do you know from high school who are the same in their forties and 50s? Not many. But I wanted for the audience to have a thread because he was beloved as who he was.” Unquote

The also asked what he thinks his character has been doing since we last saw him in Descent parts one and two? quote  “There’s lots of novels about what happened to the Borg and possible stories that could have developed,” “So [creating Hugh’s backstory] was a combination of talking to producers that had deep knowledge on the canon, but also some of my own imagination, because you know when you’re an actor you don’t have to tell anybody how you got there – you could make up anything you want in your head!” unquote I’m looking forward to seeing who their stories unfold in this season.

Patrick Stewart’s been on a press blitz promoting Picard and one stop was The Graham Norton Show ,while there he told the story about the time he was caught by a room service waiter, watching himself in an episode of The Next Generation. Quote “I don’t look for it, but occasionally I’ll happen upon it,” “There was one night in a hotel when I was flicking through the channels and there was an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, so I watched it for a few minutes, and I got hooked.

“Then the waiter came in with my room service order and he looked at me, then looked at the television and I thought, ‘He is going to go away and tell the entire kitchen that it was the saddest thing he had ever seen – this guy upstairs alone, having room service and watching himself’.” unquote Well Patrick, if you don’t watch yourself who will?

And we will be seeing much more of Sir Patrick and Star Trek Picard as the series has already earned  a renewal for Season two, but this time it’ll be with a new showrunner, Terry Matalas will be taking up the reins for the next season, Mr. Matalas previously was the showrunner for Syfy’s 12 Monkeys, but he’s not new to Trek having worked as a production assistant for Voyager and enterprise.

Show writer Michael Chabon sat down for an interview with Rolling Stone,in the interview he laid down his Trek Bona Fides. Such as how he and his wife both got into the next Generation. He also talked about a dinner he had with Rick Berman quote I had dinner with [Next Generation showrunner] Rick Berman a few weeks ago. I said something like, “Oh, it was so remarkable that they cast such a great actor, and someone who was so well-known on the England stage.” He said, “You have to remember, when we started that show, we actually cast two really well-known, talented actors: LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, who had been in Stand By Me.” That was the casting coup of The Next Generation in the beginning. It was viewed as: They got LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, who was this hot, young actor. Patrick Stewart was so unknown at that time, he wasn’t viewed as a coup in the sense that he was, say, when they cast him to play Professor X. unquote He also discussed about what it’s like writing for the Next Generation characters. And how it was to write for an older Picard quote It’s incredible, the things he does over the course of the season. Because it’s not just him playing the Picard that you know when you think of Picard. He’s playing Picard who’s decades older, has been through a lot, has aged physically, is looking at his life in the way that someone who’s middle-aged wouldn’t. In canon in our story, Picard is I believe 92. So he’s older than Patrick is, but someone who’s been alive that long, looking at his life, is going to be behaving very differently than someone who’s however old Patrick was when he started doing TNG. Patrick had all of that. He presents the character of Picard very much as the same guy. And yet, he’s changed, inevitably. He’s older, he’s wiser, he’s sadder, he has more regrets and more to regret. All of that just emerged on day one of shooting. Unquote It’s a very long interview, I’ll have a link to it in the show notes. https://www.rollingstone.com/tv/tv-features/star-trek-picard-michael-chabon-interview-937028/

One of the best parts of the series premiere of Picard was Jean-Luc’s dog Number One. I have a feeling we won’t see much of him until the end of the season, since I’m sure Picard is going on the road in the next episoe or two. On the Picard after show The ready room with host Wil Wheaton,  Showrunner and Executive Producer Michael Chabon talked about how they came to give the Bulldog his name. Quote “Pretty early on,” “As soon as the first draft was getting written I think it appeared at that point. It’s meant to be…it’s an Easter egg, and it’s cute and charming, but there’s something also kind of poignant about it, to me at least. He doesn’t have a Number 1, those days are behind him. Riker’s long gone in his life and there’s almost something sort of touching that he’s trying to recreate in the form of a dog, which is not a bad thing to try to do. (It’s) So much that he’s lost, so much that he’s left behind.” unquote

We might have a special guest star already lined up for Picard season 2. While appearing on The View to promote the show, Sir Patrick said this to host Whoppi Goldburg quote “Something that I need to bring up. I’m here with a formal invitation – and it’s for you, Whoopi. Alex Kurtzman, who is the senior executive producer of ‘Star Trek: Picard’, and all of his colleagues (of which I am one), want to invite you into the second season.” unquote The crowd applauded and Whoppi responded with a big quote “Yes!” quote https://twitter.com/TheView/status/1220028276879568897?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1220028276879568897&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fcomicbook.com%2Fstartrek%2F2020%2F01%2F22%2Fstar-trek-patrick-stewart-invites-whoopi-goldberg-picard-season-2-guinan%2F

It’ll be good to see Gunian back in Picard’s life.

CBS’s day at the Winter 2020 TV Critics Association Press Tour gave us some jaw dropping news nuggets, specifically that there are two more live action projects in the pipeline. Now of course, there is nothing to indicate what these two projects are, though speculation seems to hover around a StarFleet Academy series and a Pike’s Enterprise show bringing back Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn for the further adventures of the characters .

These two new shows would be in addition to the Section 31 show, which is still in active development.

So where are the Discovery season 3 and the animated Lower Decks? TrekCore got to ask producer Heather Kadin about the shows and she revealed that both should be ready to go by May. As to which one goes first, that’s up to the All Access execs. And Might I suggest to these execs, if they wanna keep me paying for all access after picard is over, you might wanna put out Lower Decks. Just saying.

Well if looks like the Kelvin timeline just might be dead. As Director Noah Hawley has told The Hollywood reporter that his project will be an original story with a new cast. Quote“To call it Star Trek IV [the placeholder the trades have been using] is kind of a misnomer. I have my own take on the franchise as a lifelong fan.”

“Yeah, I think so. Yeah. It’s early days. I don’t know. But new characters often involve new cast.”  As an example of what he plans to do he told them quote It’s William Shatner putting on his reading glasses and lowering Khan’s shields, which cost like $9.50. There’s no big action sequence. He’s just more clever, there’s something really uplifting about that feeling. I went to Paramount and just had my own ideas for what I wanted to do with it. So that’s the direction that I’m going in. It’s still very early days, so I can’t really be more specific. But it’s going to be different. Unquote

In a different interview with Deadline he said quote “I have my own story and want to make sure as I did with Fargo and Legion that I’m respectful to the underlying material. That I’m not unintentionally changing things that people love or feel passionate about. So, it’s important to do that research as I go.” unquote

So it sounds like we’re actually gonna see something original on the big screen. No rehashes of old episodes, we’re gonna leave the Enterprise crew behind and tell a story that’s just set in the Star Trek Universe.  Good idea. Especially now that it seems that the Tarantino movie is still up in the air.

I guess we’ll just have to watch and see.

Deep Space Nine is getting some comics love. IDW has announced that a new Star Trek Deep Space Nine miniseries called Too Long a Sacrifice will be out in April.  The series is being written by David and Scott Tipton and will have artwork by Greg Scott. It’s being described as a noir thriller centering around Odo. David Tipton said in a press release quote “Set during the most difficult hours of the Dominion War, Too Long a Sacrifice shows the station during trying times: a series of mysterious and seemingly unsolvable terrorist attacks just as the war has everyone strained to the breaking point,” “We’ll get to see the darker side of life on the station as Odo leads the investigation, with increasingly desperate conditions forcing him and others to deal with new and unexpected allies and to use unusual tactics in their efforts to stop the attacks.” unquote  Scott Tipton added quote “We’re so excited to return to the world of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. With its ‘frontier setting’ and precarious place in the galaxy, Deep Space Nine offers the opportunity to tell truly unique tales of intrigue and suspense. Combine that with one of the best character ensembles ever assembled, and you get something no other Star Trek series can offer.” unquote

Star Trek Deep Space nine Too Long a Sacrifice number one will be available with various covers including Ricardo Drumond and JK Woodward as well as a photo variant. Look for it in April.

Looks like we’re one step closer to the Star Trek biobed. Nanox, a company out of Israel has created a medical machine called the Nanox Arc. It resembles the Star Trek biobed and promises to make medical scanning available to people around the world at a significantly lower cost. Instead of a huge CT machine, The acr is a portable bed. Ran Poliakine, founder and CEO of Nanox told Digital Trends quote “Nanox has achieved the world’s first commercial-grade digital X-ray source, without the use of heat,” “This X-ray device enables pulsating electron beams, versus the continuous radiation of X-rays used today. Building a silicon-based ‘electron nano gun’, placed on a silicon chip, has made Nanox’s method more efficient than the traditional way of heat-based filaments.” unquote

Basically since the device doesn’t need to produce heat, the device can be made seventy to ninety percent smaller, reducing the cost. Nanox believes that this could make medical imaging more accessible to people around the world.

As to its resemblance to the Star Trek biobed, it’s not a coincidence Polkaine told digital trends quote “The Starfleet’s unsung hero allowed doctors to assess and diagnose their patients in minutes, and allowed them to conduct any medical imaging scan necessary, efficiently,” “The biobed served multiple purposes, and that is exactly what we are aiming to achieve. We want the Arc to be accessible, portable, easy to operate and focus on what’s important: the patient.” unquote

Star Wars

Rumors of the Obi Wan series demise are a bit premature.  Apparently on the January seventeenth rumors started being spread about that the plug had been pulled on the Ewan McGregor led Disney Plus series. Reports appear to have traced this rumor back to a parody Twitter account. Comic Book dot com reports that sources close to the production say that it has not been cancelled. But is going back to the drawing board. Unknown Sources have told the Hollywood reporter that the story has been scrapped and a new writer is being sought to write the series. The source also indicated that it might go from a six part series to a four part series. Star Ewan McGregor told  IGN that filming would shift to next year quote “It’s just slid to next year, that’s all. The scripts were really good,” “Now that Episode IX came out and everyone at Lucasfilm has got more time to spend on the writing, they felt they wanted more time to write the episodes.” unquote I’m guessing that the Star Wars franchise will continue being more of a tv franchise for the near future. Probably just putting out a new movie project every couple of years.

The Rise of Skywalker has finally passed the one billion dollar mark, twenty eight days after being released in theaters. This was slower than Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, which took 12 and 19 days respectively. Now while this shows a trend, I don’t think the Walt Disney company is worried, after all the only Star Wars film that really didn’t do as expected was Solo.

Let’s take a quick look at the box office for this past weekend. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2020W04/?ref_=bo_wey_table_1

Composer extraordinaire John Williams walked away from the Grammys with his twenty fifth career Grammy Award Victory. Mister Williams won the Best Instrumental Composition Grammy for the Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge Symphonic Suite, that he created for the theme park. I’d like to offer him my congratulations, if he’d like to write me a theme song, …

Taika Waititi is a busy man, lots of plates to spin, he acts and he directs including in The mandalorian. So naturally rumors would get started that he might be working on a Star Wars movie. Taika’s response to these Rumors? On twitter he put up the cover of Fleetwood Mac’s album, also called Rumors. Funny.  Well I guess we can never actually say never, one day he might have some free time and I’m sure lucasfilm would love to have him do some work.

Hulu’s Senior VP of originals speaking at the Winter Television Critics Association press tour spoke about The Orville’s upcoming third season quote “The Orville has a very loyal following on Hulu so when there was an opportunity to bring a new season to our viewers we jumped at it, I will see the first episode next week. We’ll monitor and evaluate the show as it goes, unquote So that sounds like Orville fans need to have a strong showing to make sure we get a season four. Now if they’d just tell us WHEN to show up…

Could the Merovingian be returning to the Matrix? French website AlloCine reports that actor Lambert Wilson, who appeared in the matrix reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions as the plot advancing program is currently in negotiations to return to the fourth Matrix movie. If he does return he would just stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie Ann Moss as well as newcomers Yahya Abdul Mateen II, Jessica Henick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris,Eréndira Ibarra, Max Riemelt, and Toby Onwumere. Production on the movie is scheduled to start next month in Chicago and would be released May twenty first of 2021.

The new branch of the United States Military the US. Space Force revealed it’s uniforms on it’s official twitter and it’s got fans scratching it’s head. There are the normal things like the flag, the patch for the service and stuff like that. The confusing thing is that they decided to use woodland camouflage for the uniform. Is the Force planning on invading Endor? Wouldn’t Blue or Black make more sense? Let’s just hope this is a temporary choice.

It looks like we are getting a third National Treasure movie from Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer. The script will be written by Bad Boys for Life screenwriter Chris Bremner, who also will be writing the fourth Bad Boys movie.

National Treasure is a couple of movies starring Nicolas Cage as Treasure hunter, Benjamin Franklin Gates, the first one came out in 2004 and the sequel came out in 2007. No word on when their looking at putting out the third one.

NBC Universal has released details on it’s Peacock streaming service. First off Comcast‘s Xfinity x1 and Flex video platforms will get it on April fifteenth, it will than come out nationally on July fifteenth. There will be three different versions quote A free, ad-supported one; a more robust, ad-supported one that will be free to Comcast and Cox Cable subscribers, and $5 for everyone else; and an offering with no ads that is $5 for Comcast and Cox subscribers and $10 for everyone else. Unquote Free will have quote “next-day access to current seasons of freshman broadcast series, a range of film and TV titles but only select episodes of marquee Peacock originals and tentpole series. It will also feature curated Peacock streaming genre channels like SNL Vault, Family Movie Night and Olympic Profiles.” unquote The Paid version will have everything free has plus quote “adds full-season Peacock originals and tentpole series and next-day access to current seasons of returning broadcast shows. It also throws in early access to late night titles like the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and sports attractions like exclusive Premiere League soccer matches, Olympic programming” unquote  The service will have about 600 movies and 400 series I don’t know, I think I’ll just stick with the free version.

The mouse kills the fox, the mouse mills the fox, high ho the derry o the mouse kills the fox. In a step meant to symbolize Disney’s take over of the 20th century fox studio. You will no longer see films from 20th Century Fox or Fox searchlight Pictures. Instead it’ll be 20th century studios and Searchlight Pictures. The tv side is currently unchanged, but it’s expected that a renaming will occur soon. The logos will be the same, just without the word Fox.

Finally we remember The son of author JRR Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien. Christopher was born in November of 1924 and assisted his father with his work on the lord of the rings, he even edited the companion book The Silmarillion after his father died in 1973.

He would go on to edit dozens of other books by his father and Geoffrey Chaucer. He also wrote a book of his own called The Battle of the Goths and The Huns. He served as chairman of the Tolkien Estate Ltd until 2017. He was critical of The Lord of the Rings movies saying quote “They gutted the book, making an action film for 15 to 25-year-olds.”

He spent the rest of his life in France where he passed away at the age of 95 on January sixteenth, 2020.  He is survived by his second wife, their two children and a son from his first marriage.

EPISODE 61

Tonight! MODOK goes on but Howard The Duck does not, Joker, Joker, Joker and we remember a legendary Python and much more on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Greetings and welcome to the comics edition of Multiverse Tonight.  Episode 61. And I thank you for being here. You might not know it, but you help keep me busy, which helps keep me sane. I like others suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder during the winter and keeping busy helps to keep the depressive feelings at bay. Thank you, could you do me a favor though? Could you recommend Multiverse Tonight to a friend for me? You don’t have to shout it from the mountain tops, just one friend, someone who you think will like geeky news, presented plain and simple. Thank you, now let’s go on to the news.

Marvel

Chris Hemsworth is teaming up with the National Geographic Channel for a new series called Limitless. The series was announced at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. The series is about superhuman feats. The science series looks at groundbreaking biotech and other ways we can unlock the body’s secret superpowers for a longer better life. Chris Hemsworth said  Quote “Basically, I was somehow convinced to volunteer myself as a human guinea pig and endure a series of mental and physical challenges across the globe, all for the sake of science,” Hemsworth explained. “We’re hoping to shed some light on new ideas and emerging science with the focus on extending a healthy life span. Production starts soon, so wish me luck.” unquote No word on when this will air.

Marvel has a new X-Men comic coming this April. Children of the Atom will be a new ongoing series. Writer Vita Ayala and artist Bernard Chang bring us this new team book with a new squad of super heroes that will turn the X-Men’s World upside down. No details about the cast of the book have been announced yet.

M.O.D.O.K. has a cast. The new Hulu animated series will star Patton Oswalt in the lead role as the (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing) who has been ousted from both his evil organization and his family, plus he’s suffering from a midlife crisis. Joining Patton will be Aimee Garcia as Jodie, MODOK’s wife and the mother of his children, Ben Schwartz as lou, MODOK’s twelve year old son, Melissa Fumero as Melissa, MODOK’S seventeen year old daughter, Wendi McLendon-Covey from The Goldbergs will be Monica, a mad scientist at AIM and Modoks rival, Beck Bennet as Austin Van Der Sleet, MODOKS new boss. Jon Daly as Super Adaptoid, A snarky android with ambitions to live, feel and create, but is instead forced to spend his days massaging the hoverchair sores on his creator M.O.D.O.K.’s scalp and Sam Richardson as Gary, a henchman at AIM who is fiercely loyal to MODOK even if MODOK struggles to remember his name.

Executive Producer Jordan Blum said about this cast in the press release quote “I’m blown away by our insanely talented and hilarious voice cast, who have all brought their specific kind of magic to this weird and wonderful corner of the Marvel Universe.” unquote

Howard the Duck is dead. Not the character, but the show. This seems to be part of a house cleaning at Marvel Television as it transitions from Jeph Loeb to Kevin Feige. Howard the Duck joins Tigra & Dazzler on the death pile. The other two shows in the HULU and Marvel animated line up MODOK and Hit Monkey are still in the works, no word on what will happen to The Offenders crossover, but it’s probably gone too.  Marvel and HULU declined comment. I’d feel sorry for Kevin Smith losing Howard the Duck, but he still has plenty of other irons in the fire, so he has plenty of future endeavors.

Marvels Iron Man VR game has been delayed a few months from February to May. The game’s developer Camouflaj revealed the delay in a tweet. Quote In order to deliver on our vision and meet the high expectations of our amazing community, we’ve made the difficult decision to move Marvel’s Iron Man VR to a May 15, 2020 release. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding. You’ll be hearing from us again soon! Unquote

The PS4 exclusive game was revealed last March and will put the player inside Tony’s helmet via the players VR headset and will see Tony’s past as an arms dealer come back to haunt him in the form of Ghost from Ant-man & The Wasp.

Now for some quick hits.

The Falcon & The Winter Soldier has added actor Noah Mills to the cast, Noah is known for roles in NBC’s The Enemy Within and The Brave. The series will premiere on Disney Plus in August.

Disney has officially started work on Captain Marvel 2. According to the Hollywood reporter , the studio has almost locked down Megan McDonnal , a staff writer on WandaVision for the much anticipated sequel. But t is supposed to take place in present day No release date or subtitle has been given for the movie. You’ll remember the first Captain Marvel made 1.13 billion dollars world wide.

Speaking of Marvel projects in the pipeline. Marvel’s Disney Plus She Hulk series will start filming this July in Atlanta according to a production notice

DC

We begin DC News with Joker.

Joker got huge nominations from the Oscars. Getting nominations for actor in a leading role for Joaquin Phoenix, achievement in cinematography, costume design, directing for Todd Phillips, film editing for Jeff Groth, Makeup and Hairstyling for Nicki Leadermann and Kay Georgiou, original score for Hildur Guonadottir, best film, sound editing for Alan Robert Murray, sound mixing and screenplay. There were other geeky nominations, but I’ll highlight those in the geek news.

Now an interesting fact as emerged. Joker editor Jeff Groth revealed to Collider that Bradley Cooper had a hand in editing the film. quote”We kept this one pretty close to us. We screened it more personally for people and filmmakers,”. “Bradley Cooper definitely came in a couple of times. He was a producer on the movie, but he definitely watched the movie many times and sat with us. We could call him if we got stuck with something and be like, ‘Hey, can you come over and take a look at things?’” unquote If Jeff wins, I think he owes Bradley big, don’t you?

Speaking of the Joker, 2020 marks his 80th anniversary. The character, debuted in 1940’s Batman number one. To celebrate, DC is putting out The Joker 80th anniversary 100 page super spectacular in April. The comic will feature a number of original stories from Denny O’Neil, Scott Snyder, Paul Dini, Lee Bermejo, Jock, Mikel Janin and current Batman series writer James Tynion IV, all with a cover from former Batman and Metal artist Greg Capullo. The release will also have variant covers showcasing the Joker’s look from each decade. It’ll be out on April 29th for $9.99.

There will be more than one. HBO Max’s Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey revealed at the tca press tour that quote “Greg [Berlanti] said that I can share a few little tidbits about Green Lantern. We’re in the early stages of talking to him about it, but he did say that the series, so far, will span several decades and focus on the origin story of two major Green Lanterns from Earth, while going into the story in space and Green Lantern favorite character Sinestro.” unquote  As to what green lanterns those will be is unknown right now. Just don’t make the suit animated. Simpler is better.

Karen Gillian would love to do a DC movie. While the actress was promoting Jumani The Next Level in Brazil, Karen was asked if she had her pick what comic book character would she like to be involved with next/ quote Batgirl would be cool for that, as well. My favorite film in that world, my favorite one is The Dark Knight. I just love the way that one is directed so much. So, I would just love to work in that world, as a director. Come on, DC. Look over this way.” unquote

The lack of Joker in the new Birds of Prey movie was a choice according to star and producer Margot Robbie. The actress told comic book dot com at a press event quote “It was either going to be a complete Harley and Joker story or Joker has got to be out of the picture,” “I really wanted to see Harley in a girl gang and I felt there was a huge gap in the market for a girl gang ensemble action film. I felt like no one was doing that and I couldn’t understand why, especially a comic book movie.” “From the very beginning it was a conscious choice of they have to be broken up at this stage,” “I have a whole backstory in my head [of] what’s happened between what you saw at the end of Suicide Squad and what you see at the beginning of Birds of Prey.”

Birds of Prey and the fantabulous emancipation of one Harley Quinn come to theaters on February seventh.

He passed away several years after having contracted a rare form of dementia called frontotemporal dementia or FTD that impaired his ability to speak and communicate. He was born in Wales on February first 1942. He’s best known for Monty Python, writing and performing. A few of his most memorable characters include Mr. Creosote in Monty Python’s the Meaning of Life and Sir Bedevere in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Cardinal Biggles the airplane cap wearing member of the Spanish Inquisition.
