Show Notes Episode 74: What Would the Great Bird of The Galaxy Say? & Episode 75: Marvel Comics are Coming Back!

Welcome to Episode 74 of Multiverse Tonight. May the Fourth be with you. So I don’t know about any of you listening outside the united states, but here things are starting to open up a bit.  Spring Fever has set in, and not caused by Co-Vid. People are getting out and Fishing and Camping. Some businesses are starting to open back up with qualifications. Social Distancing, masks, cleaning routines and so forth. I wish they’d open up the hair salons, I need a haircut.  Let’s get on with the news.

STar Trek

Alex Kurtzman is someone who can be seen as a devil or a saint depending on who you ask. He’s partially responsible for the first two JJ Trek movies and then a co-creator of Discovery, now he’s the head of the Star Trek franchise. So, we might as well get to know him, the man sat down with the Star Trek Picard Official Collector’s Edition Magazine from Titan and opened up about how Trek has taken over his life and his hopes that The Great Bird Gene Roddenberry would be proud of what he’s done. About how involved with the shows he is, he’s in deep saying quote I very much enjoy it. My involvement, it’s not just in the writing of it. I post all the shows, so that means I cut them, and I’m involved all the way down to the color timing and mixing. That’s a lot of work. But… I’ll show you how I enjoy it. My wife and son actually deliberately like to stay out of any knowledge of what I’m doing until it airs. So, when it airs, we all sit down and watch together, and I see it fresh through their eyes, which is really fun, because it’s the culmination of all the work, and now we get to sit together as a family and enjoy it. And, in a funny way, isn’t that what Star Trek has always been about? People sitting together as a family and loving it?

I’m now at the point where I’m eating, breathing, dreaming Star Trek. And I love it! I love it for one reason. The work itself is very challenging, but it’s also some of the most satisfying work I’ve ever done, and I think that the reason why is because I’m recognizing and seeing in so many people that I meet how critically important it is to their lives. I see that Star Trek has influenced people’s lives in a real way. It’s not just a form of entertainment. It’s an inspiration for the kind of people they want to be, or the kinds of things they choose to pursue in their careers or the principles they want to live by. That’s put such a tremendous responsibility on our shoulders to deliver and to maintain that message.

And what would he do if he could somehow meet Gene Roddenberry, who died back in 1991? Quote It’s funny. I think about that, actually, probably more frequently than I should [laughs]. I hope that he recognizes that, well… First of all, he’d probably take issue with me for the amount of conflict the characters have. I know that was a big thing he struggled with on Next Gen. But my hope would be that he would recognize now, from his grand perspective in the sky, how much that opened the door for Star Trek’s endurance, and how much it’s iterated and changed and yet has remained, I believe, very true to his vision. There isn’t really a day that goes by where we don’t think very consciously about how he would want the messaging of Star Trek to go, and is what we’re doing consistent with the messaging of Star Trek, as he envisioned it? It’s really important to all of us. I hope he would appreciate it. I hope he would be proud. You can pick up the magazine on Amazon now.

Season Three of Discovery will see a tonal shift for the series, according to Jonathan Frakes speaking with comic book dot com quote “Discovery has primarily to do with Sonequa’s character, as you’ll see. At the end of season two, we flash-forwarded I think 930 years. Michael Burnham has found a new core, not to mention a new partner in crime. So again, there’s a big tonal shift on that show, less driven by the pain and guilt of her past and more about the magical reunification of the Discovery crew and wherever she went off to,” “God knows where she went as the Red Angel. So those two things coming back together is very much the theme, and how grateful everyone is and what’s next. It’s got a lot of action-adventure and not so much pain.” unquote That partner in crime he was referring to is a new character played by David Ajala named Book.

By the way, about Riker’s appearance at the end of Picard? Frakes’ appearance was filmed on a redressed Discovery bridge in Toronto while he was busy directing one of his third season episodes. No idea of when Discovery Season Three will show up, but by now most of those people who have canceled their subscriptions would like to know. Kinda helps with budgeting.

Lawsuits never die. A while back a district court ended the copyright lawsuit against ComicMix’s Oh the Places You’ll Boldly Go!, a parody of Dr. Seuss’ Oh the Place You’ll Go! That federal district court judge back in March of last year, ruled that it was a parody and did make fair use of copyrighted material. Now, it’s gone to the next level and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals is hearing the appeal. There are two big issues in the case. One What is fair use? Two, what effect does fair use have on the potential market.   There’s a great article on the Hollywood Reporter about this, I’ll have a link to it in the show notes and when a decision is handed down, I’ll let you know.

Star Wars

Surprise! The Rise of Skywalker was released to Disney Plus a couple of months early just in time for the annual May the Fourth geek holiday. The Rise of Skywalker made for more than a billion dollars world wide. An impressive feat for any film. However the film was the least profitable of the sequel trilogy, even lower than Rogue One but higher than Solo.

We also have some breaking news. Star Wars dot com has announced that Acadmy Award winner taika Waititi will be directing and co writing a new Star wars feature film  with Oscar Nominated Writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

In addition to that news, Emmy nominated writer Leslye Headland is currently developing a new untitled Star Wars series for Disney+. Headland will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner for the series,

The Cassian Andor series is busy staffing up. This time, they’ve added actresses Genevieve O’Reilly and Denise Gough to the pre Rogue One based show. O Reilly will play the same role she played in the movie, Mon Mothma. Ms. Gough’s character is still unknown. There is still no start date for production but the series has had some shifts behind the scenes, The Hollywood Reporter learned that Tony Gilroy, a co writer of the Rogue ONe movie will now show run the show replacing Stephen Schiff. Gilroy will also direct the first couple of episodes.

Playstation 4 owners? You’ve been given a caution flag on the last lap. Last episode I told you about Star Wars Episode One racer coming to Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch on May twelfth, will now Playstation owners won’t get the game until May 26th. Aspyr posted on twitter about the delay quote “We have an update on the launch of Star Wars Episode l: Racer,” Aspyr shared on social media. “Unfortunately, we’ve just learned that we will have to delay the game on PlayStation 4 until May 26.” no reason for the delay was given, but it sounds like it’s on Playstation’s end.

The world might be in a state of shut down and restart right now, but work continues on The Mandalorian Season 2. Director Rick Famuyiwa told Variety that quote “We’ve been hunkered down in the post process, it’s been a challenging and great experience so far, but it’s good to have that to take my mind away from the daily madness that we’re living at the moment.” unquote Season 2 is due on Disney Plus in October.

And on that merchandising for The Mandalorians breakout star The Child is in full effect, now there’s a Star Wars the Mandalorian The Child edition of monopoly with the child full face on the box, the game pieces are all of the Child and you play by buying and selling Hideouts and Common Houses and use Camtono and Bounty Puck cards. The game retails for 19.99

The VR game Vader Immortal will be coming to Playstation VR this summer. All three episodes will be available for one individual purchase, giving fans the chance to experience Vader Immortal in its entirety.A canonical part of the Star Wars galaxy, Vader Immortal is a cinematic, narrative adventure connected to the events of Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire — also produced by ILMxLAB — and is set between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope.

Chris Pine needs something to do. Why not another franchise? Mr. Pine is in negotiations to star in a reboot of The Saint based on the 1920’s book series, which was turned into a 1960’s series starring Roger Moore and a 1997 film starring Val Kilmer. The story is about Simon Templar aka the Saint, a Robin Hood type character who travels the wor;d. The film will be directed by Dexter Fletcher and written by Seth Grahame-Smith. Paramount sees this movie has a potential start to a Mission Impossible ty[e movie series. No idea when production would start.

Speaking of mission Impossible, Mission Impossible seven has been pushed back four months from July 23, 2021 to November 19,2021. The July 23rd date will no be given to the sci fi film The Tomorrow War starring Chris Pratt, which had originally been set to open this December

The moving of Mission Impossible has bumped Dungeons and Dragons to May 27,2022. Mission Impossible 8 has also been moved going from November fourth 2022 to August fifth 2022..

AMC Theaters, when they open up, if they open up. Won’T be showing anything from Universal. First. AMC has announced that unless it has no product to show, it’s not going to open any of it’s theaters, which seems to be the sentiment from other theater chain owners. AMC is also in dire straits due to its debt load which might cause the theater chain to declare bankruptcy if it can’t avoid it.

However when they do open, they won’t  be showing anything from Universal as AMC CEO Adam Aron announced in a published letter to Universal Chairman Donna Langley. The source of the tiff? Trolls World Tour. Yep, that silly Trolls movie was originally going to be sent to theaters, like all big movies, but was instead shunted to digital downloads when the pandemic caused theaters to close. And it was a big hit, making Universal one hundred million in rental fees since April tenth. So good that NBC Universal CEO Jeff Shull told the Wall Street Journal that it quote  “exceeded our expectations and demonstrated the viability” of on-demand video. Unquote And that when theaters opened they expect to release theaters in both formats, implying that they would be released in theaters and in digital simultaneously. In response to those remarks, AMC will quote will no longer play any Universal movies in any of our theaters in the United States, Europe or the Middle East unquote. AMC also added that this was no idle threat.  So if AMC is your only option for theater movies, I would start writing emails today. If you wanna see the next Fast and the Furious movie next year.

And joining AMC in the Universal boycott is Regal Entertainment, parent company Cineworld Group in a statement said quote “Cineworld’s policy with respect to the window is clear, well known in the industry and is part of our commercial deal with our movie suppliers. We invest heavily in our cinemas across the globe and this allows the movie studios to provide customers all around the world to watch the movies in the best experience. There is no argument that the big screen is the best way to watch a movie.””Universal unilaterally chose to break our understanding and did so at the height of the Covid-19 crisis when our business is closed, more than 35,000 employees are at home and when we do not yet have a clear date for the reopening of our cinemas. Universal’s move is completely inappropriate and certainly has nothing to do with good faith business practice, partnership and transparency.”

Unquote   Kinda sounds like the theater companies are getting scared.

From movie showing to movie making. Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy are reteaming for a new untitled time travel adventure for Skydance according to the Hollywood Reporter. The movie, which originally was called Our Name is Adam will see Reyonolds character traveling back in time to help his thirteen year old self. Together they encounter their late father, who is the same age as Reynolds. The story is written by Jonathan Tropper and the movie has been in and out of development at Skydance and Paramount since 2012 when it had Tom Cruise in the lead role.

Time travel seems to be popular. James Wann and Don Murphy are teaming up to adapt Hunting Season , a sci-fi time travel story by Frank m. Robinson. The script will be written by Derek Kolstad who wrote the John Wick franchise. Hunting Season follows the story of a law officer from the future who is declared an enemy of the state and sentenced to be executed by being sent into the past and stalked by a posse. The man is given a three day head start to acclimate to the new time and find a way to survive.

Hey look kids, Orville news! The Orville season three is still on it’s way, coming to Hulu and Jonathan Frakes has only heard good things, however he won’t be directing this season revealing to comic book dot com that Star and creator Seth McFarlane and Producing Director John Cassar will direct every episode of the season. However Frakes is hoping to get to play in an acting way saying quote”I keep waiting for a phone call. I am available. I’ve got a beard,” “I would just like to be, just like I hoped and dreamed of being on [The Big Bang Theory], there’s certain things, the absurdity factor, like the Pez dispensers and the garden gnomes, certain benchmarks we all want to reach.” unquote. Maybe I should bug Tom Costantino about that, see if he can make something happen.

HBO is working on a new series based on the Hellraiser movies. The show would come from writers Mark Verheiden and Michael Dougherty and David Gordon Green. This is seperate from the movie reboot of the franchise that’s coming from SpyGlass Media. The show will be a continuation and expansion of the film series .

Finally tonight, we say goodbye to actor Gene Dynarski. Gene made a few appearances in the Star Trek Franchise First appearing as miner Ben Childress in Mudd’s Women, then playing Krodak, in The Mark of Gideon. He would return on the Next Generation as Commander Quinteros in the episode 11001001. His other roles include Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Duel, an Episode of Batman as well as Seinfeld, The XFiles, The ATeam, Little House on the Prairie and much more. He passed away in a rehabilitation center in Studio City California on February 27th. He was 86.

We also say farewell to actor Sam Lloyd best known for his role of Ted on Scrubs and Cougar town, passed away on April 30th. He will be known to genre fans for  roles in 1997’s Flubber and Galaxy Quest. He also had roles on dozens of shows from Night Court to Seinfeld to The Drew Carey Show to 3rd Rock from the sun, the West Wing, Modern Family and more. Usually playing a very deadpan character. Sam was also an accomplished singer singing in an acapella group The Blanks and a Beatles Tribute band called The Butties. This past January he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor which also became metastatic lung cancer that spread to his liver, spine and jaw. He is survived by his wife Vanessa, his one year old son Weston and his uncle Christopher Lloyd. He was 56 years old.

Marvel comics is returning, Greg Berlanti gives to covid relief and Tank Girl is back!

Welcome to the Comic book edition of Multiverse Tonight.   This is episode seventy five, getting ever closer to one hundred. Think life will get back to normal by time that episode number hits?

Spring Fever has hit and we need something to do, don’t we.  Apparently it’s camping and fishing here in Kansas.  It’ll be a wait and see as people start mingling more if Covid 19 cases start to go up here. The stay at home order is lifting and things are being slowly opened back up. Even some stores like comic book stores could open…but will they have new comics to stock? That’s a big question right now. And will we ever be more news then we know what to do with again? I guess we’ll see. Let’s get to the news….

DC

Wonder Woman 1984 might be out so late that the doritos bags will have changed by the time it hits theaters in August. But we now have it’s official rating . Wonder Woman 84 is rated PG13 by the MPAA due to sequences of action and violence. Of course, it could always be pushed back again. Even the stars don’t know if it’ll make the date. Actress Connie Nielsen told ABC News quote “I don’t know about the August deadline there. We can all cross fingers and I sure hope so,”. “The invention of a remedy against this virus will certainly make everything a lot easier. Everyone is waiting to get back to work as well, we’re all waiting to get started on our next projects, so having access to either a vaccine or at least a remedy will be a good thing for us all.” unquote

The Batman will see Colin Farrell in facial prosthetics to play Penguin. Not quite to the level that Danny Devito was in for Batman returns. Maybe a sharp beaked nose? Trouble is I think Colin Farrell should definitely be in a fat suit as a fit penguin doesn’t seem right.

Wanna watch the DC Universe original animated series Harley Quinn, but don’t wanna pay for it? The first season will be airing on Syfy on Sundays in May starting this past Sunday. It’ll be airing at 11 pm Eastern Time. Season two is currently airing on the DC Universe app.

Arrowverse Producer Greg Berlanti has donated a million dollars to Corona virus release efforts. Berlanti will create a 6 hundred thousand emergency assistance fund for those working on Berlanti Productions and 4 hundred thousand will go to the SAG AFTRA COVID relief fund, the actors fund and the Motion Picture television Fund Emergency relief Fund. The Berlanti fund will mainly be for productions that were shut down mid production like Batwoman, Doom Patrol, The Flash, Riverdale, The Flight Attendant, Supergirl, and  Prodigal Son.

Marvel

J August richards, who plays Dathlok on Marel’s Agents of Shield and now apperars on the NBC series Council of Dads has officialy come out as gay. He came out on Instagram Live with his co star Sarah wayne Callies quote  “If I think about why I even got involved in this industry, it was really to combat oppression,” “I knew how I was affected by the people of color I saw on television, or that I didn’t see on television, so this being a married, gay man, with a family … on television, I don’t take anything I do lightly, and you have an opportunity to put an image into millions of homes. I wanted that image to be honest and I wanted it to be correct.”, “Honestly, it required me to show up fully in a way that I don’t always when I’m working. I knew that I could not portray this gay man honestly without letting you all know that I am a gay man myself. I’ve never done that with the people that I’ve worked with.” “That responsibility carried me to do that because I knew how important it is to other people out there like me, who would need to see that role model.”

It will be a while before we see Thor Love and Thunder but according to Chris Hemsworth it’s the best he’s read in years. In an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer, Hemsworth said,“It’s one of the best scripts I’ve read in years. It’s Taika at his most extreme, and at his best. If the version I read is the one we get running with, it’s going to be pretty insane.” unquote Maybe taika should get Chris to do a guest shot on What we Do in the Shadows. Thor Love and Thunder is now scheduled for February eleventh, 2022.

More pushed back movie news. Doctor Strange and the Multiverese of Madness has been pushed all the way from November fifth 2021 to March 25, 2022. That’s the second push back for the movie, the first was from May to November.

The next Spiderman movie has been moved back from the summer of 2021 to November fifth 2021.

Also moving is Spider-Man into the Spider Verse 2 going from April eighth, 2022 to October 7, 2022.

Guilmemmo Del toro is bringing you some More Scary Stories to tell you in the dark. Paramount has greenlit the sequel to the 2019 movie based on the short story collection by Alvin Schwartz. Guilermo will write the screen story along with Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman with Andre Ovredal returning to direct the sequel.

Tank Girl is back with  a new publisher. This time Albatross Funnybooks, the publisher of the Goon. Previously the character has been published at DC, IDW, Image and Titan. The new series will be called King tank Girl and will be written by co creator Alan Martin with art by Brett Parson. According to Eric Powell, the Publisher of Albatross Funny Books quote “Alan Martin and Brett Parson have been doing some amazing Tank Girl stuff lately, and Brett just did a run of The Goon for us […] they kind of approached me and were like, ‘Hey, we’re looking for another home for Tank Girl, would you be interested?’ And, you know, of course I was interested because it fits right in with everything we’ve been doing. It’s a character that I think sets beside all the comics we have very, very nicely.” Its original launch was planned differentyly, quote “So this was supposed to be our big announcement that was launching in July. Our big Comic-Con push,” Powell admitted. “Comic-Con is now canceled and we’re scrambling to try to figure out when our releases are actually gonna happen. But, since it’s the apocalypse, I thought everybody would like to know that Tank Girl is coming to Albatross Funnybooks.”unquote King Tank Girl is scheduled for the fall.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that a follow-up for the upcoming Snake-Eyes Gi Joe Origins is already in the works. The Snake Eyes movie doesn’t open until October, but writers Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse are already in negotiations to write it. Snake Eyes is being used to reboot the GiJoe Movie Franchise.
