Now let’s get on with the show.

DC News

We start DC News with new revelations about Harley’s possible relationship status in Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. A photo of Margot Robbie in full costume has been leaked on twitter. A blowup of one of Harley’s tattoos that says “Harley plus Puddin” has Puddin crossed out. So it looks like the rumors are true and Harley is back on the , market. Any takers?

Birds of Prey will be in movie theaters on February seventh 2020.

And while we’re on the subject of Birds of Prey, there a rumor running around that it may lead into a trilogy, with Gotham City Sirens being number two and a Birds vs Sirens movie being the last part. Also included in that rumor is that Harley Quinn will be the thread connecting all the movies. This would be interesting if it turns out to be true. However it does seem that Warner Bros is shying away from connected movies at the moment, so it’ll be a wait and see.

However, looking at current films, Aquaman is still doing fine. The movies domestic box office total here in the US now stands at 318.7 million which beats out Iron Man which came in with 318.4 million back in 2008. The total box office for the movie which will have passed 50 days as of this moment equals one billion, 107 million, 822 thousand and 378. Pretty damn good for a movie that’s all wet.

Former Guardians of The galaxy director James Gunn might have settled on The Suicide Squad as his first project for the DC movie franchise, but according to the Hollywood reporter , he was offered several different choices including the Man of tomorrow, Superman. The Reporter says that their sources indicate that they offered him the cream of the crop in the superhero stable to bring him over to the DC Universe and he became very close to working on the Super dog Krypto. Instead he’s penned the script for The Suicide Squad., which seems to be more of a relaunch than a proper sequel if indications are correct.  We’re still a year away from the movie, who’s in it, will Gunn direct? The word is out that he’s officially in talks to take the reigns, When I find out, you’ll know.

The length of the now Ben Affleck-less The Batman script has been revealed. The movie which is do in 2021 has a lot of questions attached to it, but an update by the Hollywood Reporter indicates that the first draft has clocked in at 160 pages. Now the rule of thumb with scripts tends to be one page equals one minute. So right now it’s sitting around two and a half hours. Now this will most likely will be cut down. Director Matt Reeves recently opened up about the movie saying quote “Right now, I’m involved in The Batman,” said Reeves. “What it will be called ultimately, I don’t know. Aquaman is going to be very different from the Todd Phillips Joker movie, and that’s going to be different from Shazam and Harley Quinn. Warners believes they don’t have to try to develop a giant slate that has to have all the plans for how it’s going to connect. What they need to try and do is make good movies with these characters.” and that quote “It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale,” Reeves added. “It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”

The description of the movie has a “noir Batman tale is intriguing and has people wondering if it’s going to be influenced by the 13 issue maxi series, Batman The Long Halloween, which say Batman trying to figure out the identity of the killer known as Holiday. However Reeves has downplayed similar rumors in the past that he was adapting the Year One story line. We’ll have to wait and see what it is, when the movie hits theaters in June of 2021

The headline on Comicbook dot com says it all for this next story quote ‘The Dark Knight’ Composer Told Christopher Nolan the Music Was Too Loud.” Hans Zimmer believed that the music was so loud in the released cut of the movie that it took away from the actor’s acting. Talking to Vanity Fair, Hans said quote “I told Chris the music was too loud—you couldn’t hear the lines,”. “[Nolan] said, ‘I wrote them. I can do what I want.’ He was right; people do remember the lines. He could have done 200 different cop-out endings, but he put that ending on.” However, Hans has now come around to Nolan’s choice on the music. Quote
“It’s hard to pull off a satisfying ending, if you’re that ambiguous,” “One second longer, or one sentence or note different, and it would have been a different movie.” The Dark Knight went on to gross more than one billion dollars worldwide.

Warners announced that Super Pets will come to theaters in May 21, 2021. Not much is known about the movie outside of the release date. But with the name Super Pets, it’s not hard to guess the subject. The Super Pets hold a weird space in the DC Universe. They first debuted in 1962 and have been comprised of such pets as Krypto the Super-Dog, Streaky the Super-Cat, Bat-Cow, Flexi the Plastic Bird, Aquaman’s seahorse, Storm and  Ace the Bat-Hound. So are you ready for the Super Pets?

DC Universes Titans is gearing up to start filming season two in Toronto. According to a new update from the trade union for technical workers in the film and tv industry, the IATSE, production is set to start on March 20th and should wrap up September 9th.

The comic book series Y: the Last Man is finally seeing the screen as FX has announced that it has picked it up for the 2020 tv season. The series about Yorick Brown, the last surviving human male and his monkey Ampersand follows him as he travels to find his girlfriend following a plague that has wiped out all males on the planet. The comic book was written by Brian K Vaughan and with art by Pia Guerra and ran for 60 issues. The tv series from showrunner Michael Green and Aida Mashaka Croal will star Barry Keoghan as Yorick and also star Diane Lane. The series has had a long road to the cameras it’s been in development hell since 2007.

And congratulations are in over for Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist and Chris Wood. The couple are now engaged, Melissa showed off the ring on her Instagram. The couple met on the set of Supergirl when wood was cast as the Daximite hero Mon-El. Good fortunes to the happy couple!

Marvel News

The first tv spot for Avengers Endgame aired during the Super Bowl pregame, and it game us a peak at a world with half a population. The Statue of Liberty covered with what might be refugee camps, empty stadiums. The remaining heroes including War Machine, back on his feet. Hawkeye’s new persona and the knowledge that it’s only a handful of months away. Griping.

We also got a look at the trailer for Captain Marvel, Lots to take in. A look at her fighter pilot past and her super heroic present. And skrulls, skrulls, skrulls. The tagline “Hope begins with a hero” Is that Hope for the Avengers in endgame? Looks like another good movie.

And according to Box Office dot com, Captain Marvel is on track to open somewhere in the neighborhood of one hundred sixty million dollars on opening weekend. If it does so, it would be the seventh highest opening in the MCU. Box Office dot com has put the probable domestic box office run at four hundred forty million. Making it one of the MCU highest grossing domestic films.

Now featured in the trailer was Jude Law and his role of Yon-Rogg. Could you picture Keanu Reeves in the role instead? According to a new report from That Hashtag Show Charlie Murphy, reeves would have been in the role if not for John Wick Chapter 3. So since Keanu couldn’t play this part, what role do you think they should offer him next? Tell me on Instagram, Twitter of send me and email.

Deadpool 2 has passed the box office total for the first Deadpool movie thanks to the Chinese box office The original movie was never released in China, due to the movie being too graphic for Chinese censors. However, China did get Deadpool 2’s PG-13 version, Once Upon A Deadpool, released in china as Deadpool 2:I Love My Home. I don’t get the subtitle there. Anyway, China’s receipts pushed the international take for the movie to 1 million for the pg-13 version. All in all the two version combined have earned 786 million dollars world wide. The first Deadpool brought in $783.1 million worldwide. Awesome. By the way, Aquaman, over a billion dollars, just putting that out there for comparison….

And good news on seeing a Deadpool 3, In Disney latest conference call with investors of which I am one, Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger said that disney will continue to make R-Rated  and other adult Marvel Adventures after it finishes it’s take over of Fox. Quote “We will continue in that business,” “There’s certainly popularity” with those types of films. Unquote Iger also hinted that you probably won’t see the Marvel or Disney banner on those movies, and quote “carefully branding [R-rated films]…so we’re not in any way confusing the consumer,” unquote  Iger said.

Very very smart man.

Award season rolls on with the Annie Awards. And Spider-man INto the Spider-verse walked away with a total of seven awards. Best Editing, Production Design, Character Design, Character Animation in an Animated feature, writer for Phil Lord and Rodney Rothman, Director for Bob Pershichetti, Peter Ramsey and Mr. Rothman and the big prize, Best Animated Feature.

Mary Poppins Returns walked away with Best Animated Special Production and outstanding achievement in a live action production, Bojack Horseman galloped off with the Annie for Best General audience Animated Television/Broadcast production and voice acting in an animated tv production for Will Arnett. Ralph Breaks the Internet got the Outstanding Achievement for Animated effects in an Animated feature production. Incredibles 2’s Dean Kelly came away with outstanding achievement for music in an Animated Feature and outstanding storyboarding. There were several other awards I didn’t mention here, go to the link in our show notes for a complete list of winners. https://annieawards.org/nominees

This will be a day long remembered. Kevin Smith took to twitter Monday to announce that he will be writing and directing a Howard The Duck animated series for Hulu. Quote Thank you to @Marvel & @hulu for letting me do fowl things to Howard in animation! But the *real* brains of our operation is a legit cartoon genius – the great Meatwad himself, Aqua Teen Hunger Force’s @DaveWillis2! Prepare to get Ducked hard! Unquote

Both Mr. Smith and Mr. Willis will be writing and executive producing the series while will see Howard stuck in a word he never made. His goal is to return to DuckWorld with the help of his gal pal Beverly but he’ll have to deal with evil doers like Dr. Bong who want to turn Howard into dinner.

Howard The Duck is one of four new Marvel animated series ordered by Hulu. Also in the pipeline is a M.O.D.O.K. series from Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum, Hit Monkey from Josh Gordon and Will Speck and Tigra And Dazzler from Erica Rivinoja and Chelsea Handler. All four shows will culminate in a team up event entitled The Offenders. Now you might be asking, why disney isn’t saving them for Disney Plus. Well, All four series are adult oriented, so Disney doesn’t want show like this on Disney Plus.

Speaking of juicy news, at Hulu’s TCA presentation, Hulu Senior VP Craig Erwich, revealed that Hulu would be open to reviving the canceled Marvel Netflix series’.  Quote “Marvel has a ton of titles we’d be interested in. It kind of just depends on when they’re ready, [and] who, most importantly, is going to be behind these things.” Unquote. So don’t lose hope True Believers.

Star wars news

BB-8 is a droid out of work now. BB-8 puppeteer Brian Herring tweeted out on February 1st  that quote Today was a wrap on BB-8. The last 5 years have been an amazing ride. Thanks to @jjabrams, Kathleen, Neal, #teamBB8 especially Dave and the entire cast & crew for the time of my life. Few people get to live the dream.  Thank you. #StarWars #IX #puppeteer #BB8 #StarWarsEpisodeIX unquote The Still untitled Episode nine comes out December 20th

The prequel trilogy was met with a fair amount of criticism and debridement by fans when they first came out, however in in an interview with Vanity Fair Ewan McGregor, who played Obi-Wan in those three movies, has noticed that the younger generations of Star Wars fans have embraced the movies in a different way.

Quote “Episode III was all green screen: they had us on green disks on a green floor with a green background, and a guy on the floor rotating u McGregor shared with Vanity Fair. “What keeps you emotionally grounded is the other actor. Episode II, I was on my own, speaking to thin air. But this scene was harrowing for Obi-Wan. I lose Anakin, and we see the danger of what it might lead to in Episodes IV, V, and VI. For all my moaning about green screen, I did enjoy playing Obi-Wan and this link to Alec Guinness.”  He added, “George Lucas wanted to do something very different with the prequels. That’s why people felt cheated. It was upsetting when people would laugh and joke about it. Now, many years later, the prequels meant a lot to the generation that were kids then. So from smirking, cynical opinions, now I’m getting feedback from the kids they were made for. I’m really happy about that.”

Ya know, frankly I liked the prequel trilogy.

So, have you seen the Amazon Alexa commercial from the super bowl?

Pretty funny, huh.

From Del Rey books comes, Black Spire written by Delilah Dawson and available on September 3rd the novel quote a prequel to the Disney Parks experience, General Leia Organa dispatches her top spy to Batuu in a desperate search for Resistance allies. Unquote

Unquote These two books are available on August 6th.

Galaxy’s Edge opens later this year.

With the recent polar vortex here in the U.S., Billy Dee Williams took to twitter to remind everyone…to wear their cape. From a real bdw on twitter quote Hey baby it’s really cold outside…

Thinking of everyone across the country battling below zero temperatures today. Stay safe and warm and if you have to go outside, don’t forget your cape! Unquote  That man is cooler than ever.

Star Trek news

Alex Kurtzman Executive Producer and showrunners speaking at the winter television critics association press tour said that they  had big ideas and that quote hopefully we’ll get the pickup and we’ll be off to the races” unquote About luring in fans who might be reluctant to pay for All Access to watch the series he told the audience. Quote “‘Trek’ has to evolve like all television has evolved in the last 5-6 years,” he said. “Our job is to give you a ‘Star Trek’ that you couldn’t possibly get on network television.” unquote On the subject of dealing with the cannon from the rest of the franchise, Kurtzman said “We certainly know that in order for ‘Trek’ to live on we will need to find ways to operate outside of canon as well and create new canon,”  “That’s part of the job.”

However on the subject of future show,

CBS EVP of Original Content Juliet McNamara said that their taking a quote measured approach to developing and releasing shows in this universe,” when talking about the subject of new Trek shows in the pipeline.

And on the subject of the Picard show, Alex Kurtzman told Deadline dot com that quote

“We’re asking how do we live to the spirit and tone that Next Gen set and also make it different,” “Patrick was very clear that he did not want to repeat what he had already done,”
“Patrick didn’t want to put handcuffs on us, he wanted us to have the freedom to explore the character and he said, ‘I will always know if it’s something that he would or would not do,’ and that’s the kind of conversation that we’re having as we build it scene by scene,”
Kurtzman also spoke to comicbook dot com about the Picard series quote “Well, I’ll tell you the first thing we all said is it has to feel grounded,” “No matter what choices we’re making about portraying the future, it has to feel grounded, because I think one of the things people have loved so much about Next Gen is that it is a very emotional, thoughtful, grounded piece of entertainment. And the easy thing to do is come up with crazy floating skyscrapers, and all the cliches of science fiction, and we’ve tried to avoid that across the board.

“So, in the production design, in the look of it, in the feel of it, it’s always about the small intimate personal details that you can still connect to now even though it’s taking place so far in the future.”

I have never had a problem with connecting with Star Trek. It’s not the locations, it’s the characters and the story. If you make the whole of continuity not make sense, than why would I want to watch it?

He also added that production begins this April.

And speaking about the star of the show, Patrick Stewart, while promoting The Kid Who would be king in London, Stewart was asked about the possibility of a Picard movie (didn’t they know he already did that? ) He responded quote “Oh lord, we’re set up with possibly three years of this show,” “So if there is a film, it’s a long way off.”

Exactly. Besides, if you want to do a Picard movie, do a young Picard movie with James McAvoy. Patrick could do the book ends in the movie.

By the way, The Discovery cast did a bit of Carpool Karaoke, this is where I draw the line, I’m not watching, plus you have to have an Apple device for that, and that’s where I draw the line too.

Now for some science news, Syfy Wire reports that researchers from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the University of California Berkeley have created a whole new approach to 3D printing, similar to the replicator in Star Trek. The device, which looks similar to the Star Trek replicator projects light into resin, which than makes small objects in a matter of minutes. The new tech is based on computed tomography, used in medicine or industrial 3d imaging. But instead of traditional 3d imaging taking multiple x rays to make a 3d map, this reverse engineers the 3d object into 2d components which are then projected as slide of light into the gooey resin

There is a video on Youtube that shows more about this, we will have a link to it in the show notes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5UsRDS-wqI

Kinda neat, now let’s continue progressing without that World War III or Eugenics war, can we?

Geek News

If you remember the end of Toy Story 3 the toys were handed down from Andy to a new kid Bonnie…and a happy ending was had by all?

Tim Allen hints that might not be the answer. Speaking with The View Allen said that quote “Toy Story 3 ended, originally, with the little girl just sitting there, but all of us saw that little girl smile, and Andy said with his eyes… [that] she might take care of these toys. Because we were originally, in Toy Story 3, waving on the porch, that was it. But it looked like maybe this little girl will take care of us. Well, maybe she didn’t take care of us so well.” unquote Hmmm.

And from the huh? File. Animal rights group PETA wants Pixar to get rid of Bo Peep’s crook. The character, who has absent in Toy Story 3, returns in Toy Story 4, complete with her shepards crook, which is the traditional tool of a shepherd. PETA’s Manager of Animals in Film and television Lauren Thomasson said in their statement.  Quote “I’m contacting you today about Bo Peep’s new look. Given that she was designed to have a “modern” look, why hasn’t she “lost” that outdated and cruel crook? You may not know that these “shepherd’s crooks,” are used solely to hook a sheep’s neck and force these gentle animals to move. That isn’t something that a progressive Bo Peep would countenance in 2019! A “badass” Bo Peep would likely bop the shearers, not the sheep. [A] symbol of domination over any animal is a thing of the past and not something that belongs in Toy Story 4. Won’t you please consider removing Bo Peep’s crook from the final animation?” unquote

I really don’t see what the fuss is about. I don’t think the kids that see this movie are gonna start buying crooks or herding sheep.

This year’s Super Bowl was underwhelming and the commercials really weren’t anything to write home about.  However one commercial was unique. It was directed by legendary director Ridley Scott. The commercial for Turkish Airlines called The Journey showcases Istanbul (not Constantinople) and features a plot of a cat and mouse chase across the city landmarks and showcasing the new airport. The version aired during the game was just a snippet with a longer version of the commercial on youtube.

Also at the Super Bowl was an ad for CBS All Access upcoming new version of The Twilight Zone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZsWrusH41I Looks cool.

Stephen King’s The Stand is coming back to television screens via CBS All Access. It’s officially been confirmed that the streaming service has ordered a 10 episode limited series based on the 40 year old King classic. This is the second time The Stand has been adapted into a mini series, the first was on ABC in 1994, where it was a four night event staring Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwald. Stephen King in a press release stated quote “I’m excited and so very pleased that The Stand is going to have a new life on this exciting new platform. The people involved are men and women who know exactly what they’re doing; the scripts are dynamite. The result bids to be something memorable and thrilling. I believe it will take viewers away to a world they hope will never happen.” Production will begin this spring with a release date to be announced later.

A remake of Escape From New York is on the table again. This version is from screenwriter Leigh Whannell, who wrote Insidious and the upcoming movie Upgrade. This news arrives after word the Whannell is going to write and direct a remake of Universal Pictures The Invisible Man. John Carpenter, creator of Escape From New York is set to executive produce while Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman will produce, directing has not been announced yet, but it’s expected that Whannell will direct as well as write.  According to the Hollywood Reporter, Whannell’s version will retain elements of the original while bringing new ideas to the story. Just as long as they don’t change Snake Pliskin.

Thinking about things that should or should not be remade. CBS has ordered a pilot featuring a modern day Frankenstein.  The pilot will be about a quote San Francisco homicide detective who is mysteriously brought back to life after being killed in the line of duty. But as he resumes his old life and he and his wife realize he isn’t the same person he used to be, they zero in on the strange man behind his resurrection – Dr. Victor Frankenstein.  Unquote

I have a bad feeling about this.

Kevin Smith has announced that Jay And Silent Bob Reboot has been picked by up Saban Films for North American theatrical distribution. The new movie will take playful jabs at reboots, remakes and sequels Kevin Smith said quote “Last February, I almost died. So on the one year anniversary of my widow maker heart attack, as a celebration of life and a big ol’ F you to Death, my best friend and I will be rolling cameras on a sequel/remake/reboot of a movie we first made nearly twenty years ago! In Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back our herbal heroes found out Hollywood was making a movie based on them, so they journeyed out to Hollywood to stop it. But I’ve learned so much as a storyteller and have grown immensely as a filmmaker since then, so audiences can expect something completely different: In Jay & Silent Bob Reboot our herbal heroes find out Hollywood is making a reboot of the old movie that was based on them, so they journey out to Hollywood to stop it again. I offer my (literal) undying thanks to our amazing partners at Saban and Universal for making this dream come true and backing this cinematic silliness!”

I’m glad Kevin survived that heart attack and I am so looking forward to this new movie.

Finally we’re sad to announce the passing of actor Carmen Argenziano at the age of 75.  His acting career started in the early seventies, over the decades he has starred in such films as The Godfather Part II, Stand and Deliver, Gone in 60 seconds and Angels and Demons/

He also has had a wide variety of roles on tv, starting with a role in an episode of Columbo, he’s also shown up in The Bionic Woman, Cheers, Knight rider 2000, Melrose Place, Walker Texas Ranger, Babylon 5, House, but his biggest role, and the one he will probably be most remembered for is his role as Selmak/General Jacob Carter in 25 episodes of Stargate SG-1. There is no cause for his death yet, but he is survived by his wife, Lisa and his three children. Carmen Argenziano passed away at the age of 75.

Happy New Year

So we find ourselves in another year, the beginning of a full year for the podcast. We are going to have some new things this year. A table at a con. Maybe a new piece of equipment. More interviews. Maybe a new logo? Who knows for sure. Let’s have a good year.

6 Months In

So…here I am, six months in and it’s Christmas. Christmas doesn’t mean much to me. I even have to work my night job Christmas night.

However, that doesn’t mean there’s not a lot to look forward to in 2019.

I hope to get at least 50 downloads per episode.

I will have my first convention booth at the Smallville Con in Hutchinson in June.

There are plenty of good movies coming out including Men In Black International

X-Men Dark Phoenix

and Avengers Endgame

There’s always new equipment I wanna buy, like a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 or a different mike.

Maybe I’ll start another podcast as well, I would just need a subject that I know well that there are not alot of other podcasts covering it.

But that’s the future. I’m gonna put together a special episode next week to be released New Year’s Day.

See you in 2019!

Thomas Townley

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Review

First off, I have to say that this show is nothing like the Sabrina: The Teenage Witch from 90’s ABC television. Not even remotely so get that out of our head. The cat doesn’t talk, the aunts aren’t happy, no celebrities are gonna show up on the show and Sabrina wasn’t just left at her aunts to learn witchcraft, her parents were killed.

That said, I freakin’ love this show.

The show starts easy enough, you learn that Sabrina is about to enter an important moment in her life, her Dark Baptism. This is kinda like a Bat Mitzvah for a witch, when she pledges herself to the Path of Night and the Dark Lord aka Satan. She would then cut all ties with the mortal world and enter the Academy of Unseen Arts.

Trouble is our girl Sabrina (played well by Kiernan Shipka, who played Don Draper’s daughter on Mad Men)is torn. She has been looking forward to this moment all her life, but she doesn’t want to leave her mortal life behind. What’s a girl to do? Especially when unseen forces might be trying to force her hand?

I’m about halfway through episode four as I write this review and I’m impressed with the richness of Sabrina’s world. You don’t feel like anything was left to whim. From rituals to character traits to wardrobe, pretty much everything works well to build this dark local of Greendale, which is in the same unknown state as the CW’s Riverdale. (Not only do we get mentions of Riverdale, we will get a cameo by someone from Riverdale in the first season and the possibilities of more in the future.

There are plenty of mysteries too. What’s in the mines that scared Sabrina’s boyfriend Harvey (played by Ross Lynch)? Why did Sabrina’s father and mother do what they did to Sabrina? And what roles did her aunts (played by Lucy Davis and Miranda Otto) play in all of this? What’s taken control of Ms. Wardwell (played by former The Master  actress Michelle Gomez)?

This series is just a lovely thing to watch and it has a good pedigree coming from Greg Berlanti (he of many many series too numerous to mention) and developed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (he’s chief creative officer of Archie Comics, as well as a writer of the comic book version of this show.)

I have very few complaints about the show. Mainly about how clueless the normal humans in Greendale seem to be, but that’s minor.

I look forward to watching the rest of this season.

A Convention Story: There and Back Again.

So Wizard World Tulsa has come and gone. This was a much much smaller convention than in years past.

No competitive gaming, No comic book writers , not nearly as many vendors as previous years. But it was still enjoyable.

The best part of the convention were the panels. The State of Trek panel was particularly good and I talked with them for a few monuments at the end.

I got a couple of interviews, one with author Sabrina A. Fish and one with a vendor selling some gay pirate novellas (Don’t ask), I’ll have those posted in the near future

One of the biggest surprises of the con was that the MC at the entertainment stage was Kato Kaelin. (For those of you born later than 1990, please turn to the old person on your left and ask who that is…or just ask Google.

I would give a shoutout to Fanboys 918 for that excellent Star Trek panel and to the Best Western Plus Downtown Tulsa, which gave us a free upgrade to a suite for the weekend.

I look forward to next years convention. We don’t know what the date will be yet. So fingers crossed.

Marvel News:

A new rumor has surfaced from the site Geeks WorldWide that Deadpool 2 director David Leitch will be returning to direct Deadpool 3. The Site notes that Leitch has the Fast and Furious spinoff Hobbs and Shaw next with filming from September to January. That could mean that Deadpool 3 wouldn’t begin production till sometime next August.  Which would also be well after the Disney/Fox deal will be done.

Speaking of Geeks Worldwide, They have a report from Omega Underground  that Marvel Studios is looking to begin filming a Phase Four movie next June in the United Kingdom. The big three candidates would be Black Widow, Doctor Strange 2 or The Eternals.  Those three are movies that are known, but have yet to have any dates attached to them. The vast knowledge of what will be in the Phase Four of the MCU is unknown, other than Spiderman: Far From Home which is set to come out next fourth of july weekend.

Well let’s get to the news concerning the firing of James Gunn on Guardians 3. As you might have heard, Disney and Marvel will not be rehiring Gunn, and will instead be looking for a new director. One name has already come forward to say Take me off your list.

Steven DeKnight, who served as Executive Producer for the first season of Daredevil in addition to directing the lackluster Pacific Rim Uprising was asked on twitter if he would be willing to step into the role if offered. He answered, quote “I would politely decline,. “No way in hell I could come close to what @JamesGunn has accomplished.”

So anyone else want the job?

Jessica Jones series creator and Executive Producer Melissa Rosenberg will be leaving after the series upcoming third season for a new deal with Warner Brothers Television, where she has signed a contract worth tens of millions according to the Hollywood reporter. Apparently Netflix DID try to retain her services, but the contract from Warners was just too great. In a statement Melissa said quote “All of my attention remains with the extraordinary cast, writers and production team of Marvel’s Jessica Jones, until the completion of season three,” “It continues to be a career highlight working with my partners at Marvel Television and Netflix. We’re extraordinarily grateful to the viewers who have supported us every step of the way on Jessica’s journey, which is so beautifully realized by Krysten Ritter and the amazing cast including Rachael Taylor, Eka Darville and Carrie-Anne Moss. We have so many talented storytellers in every area of this show, who I’m honored to call friends and collaborators. As I look ahead after this season, I’m thrilled that I will be able to explore new projects with the talented team at Warner Bros. Television and push myself in new challenging creative directions.” Unquote

The cast of Deadpool 2 was asked by Buzzfeed quote  “If you could have anyone from any franchise join the X-Force, who would it be?” unquote

Suggestions put forward by the cast included Howard the Duck, the Blob, Cilene Dion and Captain Planet. Ryan Renolds had the big winner, suggesting Hugh Jackman but not as Wolverine. Just plain old Hugh Jackman, maybe singing as his Les Miz character.  Well here’s to hoping Ryan. Here’s to hoping.

Doctor Strange, Master of the Mystical Arts and Acerbic Wit will be back. Yeah, he dissolved into nothingness in Infinity War, but that’s immaterial. Dissolved. Immaterial. Get it. A rumor reported by the Mirror indicates that filming will begin in Spring 2019, giving it a probable fall release date in 2020. Allegedly, he will get a pay raise of 6 million more than the first movie netting the Master of the sling ring 9.5 million. I would love it if it had some interaction with Spider-man.

DC Comics

DC’s Suicide Squad movie hit theaters two years ago, man that’s seems like ages ago. Apparently it is paying some dividends, On Twitter, comic book writer Jai Nitz, whose version of el Diablo was featured in the film, posted “Did you like El Diablo in @DavidAyerMovies Suicide Squad? Good. Because it just bought me a house. #CasaDelDiablo” He posted that with a picture of him and his new house.

Speaking of Suicide Squad, news around the sequel has been quiet. Todd Stashwich will pen the script with David Bar Katz and Gavin O’Conner will direct. However it looks like it will be getting delayed a report from Geek WorldWide indicates that Smith will film Bad Boys 3 and the sequel to the Netflix film Bright next. This will push back filming on Suicide Squad two for quite some time.  Warner Bros seems to be shifting it’s current priorities to The Joker, Birds of Prey, The Flash and The Batman movies. Shazam! Is now in post production and will come out this April. SHAZAM! Damn, still not working.

In an interview with Bustle dot com, Legends of Tomorrow stars Tala Ashe, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, and Caity Lotz, Arrow’s Juliana Harkavy, and The Flash’s Candice Patton said that they’d be up for an all female crossover. Tala Ashe said quote “On our own show, all of us separately have said to the writers, ‘Let’s have a girls’ episode,'” “Not just for the sake of having a girls’ night, but realizing that it’s kind of rare, actually, to be in a scene where it’s just women. What is that conversation between five [superhero] women when it’s not about a man? That would be exciting to me, so yeah, let’s freaking crossover it up!” And it’s not like they want to just get rid of the men for an episode, they just think it would be fun for the women to have a team up by themselves. Now while there’s no indication of am all women crossover, there will be more women kicking but in the Arrowverse with the addition of Ruby Rose staring in Batwoman and joining this years crossover.

Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen series has officially been green lite at HBO. There’s no official release date yet but the show should debut in 2019.HBO’s press release officially confirmed the show’s extensive, all-star cast list. The full list includes Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Adelaide Clemens, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Lily Rose Smith, and Adelynn Spoon. The press release had the following logline for the series. Quote Set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own. Unquote Kinda vague. What we do know is that it won’t follow the same story or characters from the original story.

So are you ready for Watchmen sans The Watchmen?

And speaking of shows coming to series Pennyworth has been ordered to series by Epix. The show that centers around Alfred Pennyworth’s younger days will consist of 10 episodes and will begin filming in London in November. The series will tell the story of Alfred Pennyworth in 1960s London, after his time serving in the British SAS. Batman’s father, Thomas Wayne, will also have a major role in the show, as he is set to be a major ally for Alfred.

All this needs is James Bond, Austin Powers and The Avengers team-up.

The Wilmington Star News reports that DC Comics Swamp Thing series will begin filming in the North Carolina town in September. The series, which is set for a thirteen episode first season will be filmed at EUE/Screen Gems Studios and will run on the DC Universe digital streaming service.

Toymaker hasbro and DC Comics have settled a trade dispute over the name Bumblebee. The transformers maker sought to block sales of a Mattel doll based on the superhero who has the ability to shrink arguing that it caused confusion in the marketplace with their own Transformer, the yellow Autobot called, Bumblebee. *sigh*

Terms of the settlement were not disclosed and no one on either side had a comment to Variety dot com.

A Bumblebee spin off movie is coming to theaters on December 21st.

Just to set the record straight, the DC Comics character of Bumblebee predates the Transformer, she debuted in the Teen Titans in 1977. The Transformer was introduced in 1983 and they obtained the trademark on the Bumblebee name in 2015. It’s amazing that no one trademarked that name before that.

So now they can all Buzz off.

Writer Scott Snyder has officially addressed whether or not the 2013 Batman Zero year storyline is still DC Comics cannon. The recent 2011 reboot of DC, The New 52, erased some parts of DC Universe continuity but kept some as well.

But with Doomsday Clock and Justice League causing more ripples in the universe Scott was asked on twitter if Zero Year still was. His reply quote It’s all supposed to be right now. Bc of what’s happening in Doomsday Clock, there can be fluidity so a lot of pre and post new 52 material co exist. Also, I always feel Bruce wore the great classic costume most of his early career. ZY is specific to ZY.

So the answer for right now is Yes. But it’s still subject to change.

In this age where comic book properties are being made into movies and tv, it’s almost shocking to learn when something didn’t come into being.

Moon and Warcraft director Duncan Jones has revealed on twitter that he once pitched a Prez movie to Warner Brothers and the studio didn’t go for it.

First a little backstory, Prez is a DC character from a short lived 1973 comic series by Joe Simon and Jerry Grandenetti. It focused around Prez Rickard who becomes america’s first teenage president and gets into all sorts of weird things like vampires, werewolves and George Washington’s descendant. It was cancelled after four issues. Dropped in the quarter box of history. Enter Duncan Jones. He has said that his take on Prez would have been inspired by a story Neil Gaiman wrote in 1993 for his seminal fantasy horror series, Sandman.

Quote I’ve mentioned this once before, but there was a fantastic DC comic book called Prez once upon a time that [Neil Gaiman] did a spin on, about a young kid genius who solves the problems of the world,”Unquote  Jones further elaborated Quote “I wanted to make that movie but DC guy at WB not interested.” “Didn’t fit in with their ‘fights in tights’ ethos, I guess.” Unquote Now while this version of the character might not see the light of day anytime soon, the character was revived by DC in 2015 for a six issue miniseries about a teenage girl named Beth ross who also becomes President and chooses Prez as her vice president. It was very well received.

DC Universes Doom Patrol series has found it’s Cliff Steele aka Robotman. Brenden Fraser, who is known for 1999’s The Mummy and it’s sequels, Dudley Do-Right and George of the Jungle, will voice Robotman, as well as appear as Cliff Steele in flashbacks. Here’s the official character description: “A former race car driver, Cliff Steele was in a horrific accident that left his body uninhabitable. Cliff’s brain was saved by the mysterious Dr. Caulder and he lives on in a powerful robotic body.” Fraser joins “Orange Is the New Black” star Diane Guerrero, who will play Crazy Jane, and “The First Purge” star Joivan Wade, who will play Cyborg.

Legendary composer Hans Zimmer will return to the DC Universe according to Film Music Reporter, Zimmer has agreed to score Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman 1984/ Zimmer last composed superhero music for Batman HansV Superman in 2016. He is replacing Rupert Gregson-Williams who did the score for the first wonder woman movie.

Star Wars

Deadline reports that Lord of The rings and Lost star Dominic Monaghan has been cast in Star Wars Nine, the search for more money. With the news ,Dominic has said quote “The galaxy far far away has had almost as much influence as the one I live in, so I am delighted to be involved,” He reoprtedly joins Keri russell, Naomi Ackie and richard E Grant as new to the franchise actors.

The new Star Wars animated series Star Wars Resistance will be bringing some big talent with it. Including Oscar Isaac voicing Poe Dameron and Gwendoline Christie  as Phasma. The first trailer has revealed that Leia Organa will be featured in the series voiced by Rachel Butera. Here’s the description of the series. Quote “Resistance fighter Poe Dameron tasks young pilot Kazuda (Kaz) Xiono with spying on the First Order. At the time, little was known about the secretive organization and its strength. In order to fulfill his mission, Kaz travels to the space station Colossus, which is being used by many ships as a port to refuel and do repairs. However, there are also dangerous races taking place there. After Kaz bragged with his piloting skills at his arrival there, he is soon drawn into one of the races…” unquote The series takes place in the time between Return to the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

The novelization for Solo A Star Wars Story includes a deleted scene with a couple of characters from the old Extended Universe, Tag and Bink. Tag and Bink are from a Dark Horse Star Wars comedy comic called Tag and Bink are Dead. The two characters find their way in and out of the main star wars story, accidently influencing the events of the Star Wars universe with comic results.

According to Jonathan Kasdan quote “One of the things we went back and forth on a lot is that both Larry [Kasdan, co-writer] and I felt that it was important to see Han in the Imperial Academy, in the Navy, because we wanted to see him become this pilot,” Kasdan shared with ComicBook.com. “And from the first draft through the last draft, there was a chunk of the movie — Very short. Like, I’d say 80 seconds long — That showed him in the Imperial Academy doing some sort of flight things, sort of disobeying a direct order, and getting kicked out.” Kasdan and his first AD played Tag and Bink in the scene, but Ron Howard cut the scene, even though Ron’s wife Cheryl was in the scene too. Quote “We were so sure, too, that Ron actually put his wife, Cheryl, who has to be in all his movies because it’s his only superstition, into the scene because he’s like, ‘Well, this is the one thing that isn’t coming out,'” “And then it did come out, and Ron had to get Cheryl over to Disney and CGI her into another shot just so we weren’t cursed. So, when I think you’ll see Tag and Bink is on the Blu-ray, because no way we’re putting that on Blu-ray without the Imperial Academy sequence. It’s a great sequence, too.” The novelization hits shelves on September 4th, while the Bluray hits shelves on September 25th.

Neil Lamont, one of the production designers at Lucasfilm has told Cinemablend that he and his team had begun work on a Tatooine set for an unknown spinoff Neil told them quote

We were just starting our work on another Star Wars spin-off and yeah. We were actually just making our mark on Tatooine — which would have been interesting and some other new galaxies,” Lamont shared with CinemaBlend. “So hopefully, if that comes back, we’ll get the chance to be able to do that further.”

He didn’t elaborate on why they stopped, but speculation has begun on what the set might have been for. Could it have been the Obi-Wan movie? Or Boba Fett? The conclusion that CinemaBlend came too was a possible idea for a Mos Eisley Spaceport movie something that would revolve around the hometown of Luke Skywalker.

This might have been interesting, but with Solo being a box office disappointment, Lucasfilm seems to be narrowing their strategy at the moment. I guess once bitten, twice shy.

Well if you had the theory that actor Richard E. Grant would be playing Grand Admiral Thrawn, I hope you didn’t put any money on that. The actor told Radio Times when the question was brought up quote“I’m not playing the Star Wars character you just mentioned,” “I’m not allowed to tell you anything. Otherwise I would be fired.” unquote

I guess we’ll have to keep dreaming

Star Trek news

Garrett Wang at Star Trek Las Vegas suggest that Paramount would have been better off if they would have made a Voyager movie instead of the much maligned Star Trek Nemesis. Wang told the crowd  quote “I think Voyager’s ‘Endgame,’ the final episode, the first hour was amazing,’ Wang said (via Trek Movie). ‘The second hour tied things up too quickly, right? They should have aired the first hour on your television screen and on the end say ‘To be continued in a theater near you’ and film a Voyager two and a half hour movie, got rid of the Nemesis script. Because let’s face it, if your TNG feature film script is not as good as certain TNG TV episodes, don’t film it. Sorry.”

Heck, I think they should have had Voyager return to the Alpha Quadrant  at the beginning of the movie only to have to team up with the Next Gen cast to defeat the Borg Queen for good.

Darn it. Bad News, Amazon’s adaptation of Galaxy Quest is on hold. Writer paul Scheer told the Wrap that the firing of Amy Powell as president of Paramount TV has hurt the project. Quote“We currently are in a little bit of a hold pattern because our executive at Paramount, Amy Powell, was fired for some insensitive comments,”  He went on to say that they want to create something that feel like an epic sequal to the movie, continuing the story while bringing in new characters. Quote “So it is mixing two casts. It’s separate kind of adventures that kind of merge, and I’m looking at this first season not as episodic, but as a serialized story,”. “So, the only way I’ve been looking at it is, using everything from the first movie and making the reasons for everything not just – I want to avoid anything that could be viewed as a reboot for reboot’s sake. There are real reasons behind these choices – maybe too much so.” Unquote

So think of it has a movie told in a season long arc.

Franchise Fatigue. To define it simply, it’s when too much of a property is produced in too short of a time period without much distinction between products causing fans to walk away because they’ve seen it all.

In the early 2000’s Star Trek found itself mired in it. Star Trek Enterprise ended and no new films or series were planned. The property was dormant for four years until JJ Abrams launched the Kelvin Timeline movies.

Now Star Trek is back with new series on CBS All Access and multiple movies on the horizon. Ronald D. Moore, veteran writer from the golden age of the franchise in the 90’s spoke about it during a panel at Star Trek Las Vegas quote“When you say something like franchise fatigue, to me, it means that particular flavor had run dry,” Moore said during a panel at Star Trek Las Vegas (via Trek Movie). “To mix my metaphors, essentially that way of doing Star Trek, that way of telling story, and those kinds of stories had run its course. You could just see in the shows. It had fatigue. It was tired. It wasn’t really engaging anymore or felt like it was just standing in place.” unquote

Moore than went on to say that the key to overcoming the fatigue is to bring in new talent, new ideas and a willingness to change the rules of the franchise.

Ron than spoke about the concerns about the new Trek franchise and that having new Trek year round won’t be a problem as long as CBS is providing distinct offerings.

Quote“Where you are now it’s like, okay, it’s all been reinvented, it looks completely different, the style is very different, the stories are different, so it doesn’t feel like you’re in danger of franchise fatigue just because there’s a lot of them coming out,” he said. “If they’re all the same or if they just start becoming the same meal over and over again, then you’ll run into fatigue and they’ll have the same problems.” Unquote

Are you worried that Trek might run into franchise fatigue faster when they have Trek year round?

Speaking of CBS All Access, CBS and Amazon have announced that the limited commercial version of All Access is now available as an Amazon Channel. The commercial free version has been available since last year.

Wil Wheaton has walked away from Twitter. He took part in #DeactiDay a movement meant to encourage Twitter users to deactivate their accounts either temporarily or permanently. Posting on twitter he said quote Twitter is broken. You deserve better than an app that tolerates and welcomes the spreading of abuse and misinformation. Being part of this is not doing us any good. Personally, politically, socially. For a day, a week, forever: your call. It’s just a good time to go. #DeactiDay unquote

Wil has been constantly taunted with Shut Up Wil memes for years. ON one hand, I don’t blame him for wanting to get away from that. On the other, I think he should have embraced those memes and made it part of his brand.

Wil, come on back to twitter, rise above this and show those haters that you’re bigger than they are.

The news that Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth have walked away from the negotiating table means Star Trek 4 is in jeopardy. Might it be time for the film franchise to go another way? In an interview with CNET John Cho says that he would be interested in a spinoff movie starring Hikaru Sulu. In reference to the Star Wars spinoff movies like Solo:A Star Wars story. “If Solo, why not Sulu?” “I don’t know if there is a day shooting Star Trek where Chris Pine did not call me Solo.” That aside, Cho doesn’t know anything about the next Star Trek movie telling CNET that he quote “I know very little about this,” Cho says. “I’ve heard we’re going to do one. But beyond that, I don’t have details. I’d rather not know; I don’t want to lie. The boring answer is to wait for the powers that be to make a decision.” unquote  Well listen to my show John and if the news breaks I’ll let you know about it.

Geek News

Warner Brothers Television has announced that this upcoming twelfth season of the big bang theory will be it’s last. She was portrayed by Chole Grace Moretz in the film adaption of Kick-Ass.  Mark Millar has characterized the story as Hit-Girl taking on Hollywood storming Hollywood and taking on Hollywood predators. Although Kevin Smith later clarified

Quote “First off, despite what Mark Millar said, my Hit-Girl arc is not about Hollywood predators — it’s about the making of a Hit-Girl movie,” “There are no jokes about the Me Too movement (obviously) or even references to real world horror stories.”

The comic will hit shelves this January.

All right brain storming time, what DC or Marvel role would be a good fit for Denzel Washington? Denzel, on the press tour for his new sequel The Equalizer 2 said he is open to joining a superhero franchise. However he quote “I haven’t been approached… we’ll see what happens,” Unquote Denzel has done a comic book adaptation before costaring with Mark Wahlberg in 2 Guns. This ones a toughy, maybe Green lantern John Stewart or howbout Spidey villain Mysterio? What do you think? Send in your suggestions!

And finally, In the Highlander, the goal of the game was to be the only one left. Well, thanks to a judge’s ruling, San Diego Comicon is now the only one. Period.
