Episode Fourteen – A Puffy Yoda

Episode Fourteen

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Review

First off, I have to say that this show is nothing like the Sabrina: The Teenage Witch from 90’s ABC television. Not even remotely so get that out of our head. The cat doesn’t talk, the aunts aren’t happy, no celebrities are gonna show up on the show and Sabrina wasn’t just left at her aunts to learn witchcraft, her parents were killed.

That said, I freakin’ love this show.

The show starts easy enough, you learn that Sabrina is about to enter an important moment in her life, her Dark Baptism. This is kinda like a Bat Mitzvah for a witch, when she pledges herself to the Path of Night and the Dark Lord aka Satan. She would then cut all ties with the mortal world and enter the Academy of Unseen Arts.

Trouble is our girl Sabrina (played well by Kiernan Shipka, who played Don Draper’s daughter on Mad Men)is torn. She has been looking forward to this moment all her life, but she doesn’t want to leave her mortal life behind. What’s a girl to do? Especially when unseen forces might be trying to force her hand?

I’m about halfway through episode four as I write this review and I’m impressed with the richness of Sabrina’s world. You don’t feel like anything was left to whim. From rituals to character traits to wardrobe, pretty much everything works well to build this dark local of Greendale, which is in the same unknown state as the CW’s Riverdale. (Not only do we get mentions of Riverdale, we will get a cameo by someone from Riverdale in the first season and the possibilities of more in the future.

There are plenty of mysteries too. What’s in the mines that scared Sabrina’s boyfriend Harvey (played by Ross Lynch)? Why did Sabrina’s father and mother do what they did to Sabrina? And what roles did her aunts (played by Lucy Davis and Miranda Otto) play in all of this? What’s taken control of Ms. Wardwell (played by former The Master  actress Michelle Gomez)?

This series is just a lovely thing to watch and it has a good pedigree coming from Greg Berlanti (he of many many series too numerous to mention) and developed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (he’s chief creative officer of Archie Comics, as well as a writer of the comic book version of this show.)

I have very few complaints about the show. Mainly about how clueless the normal humans in Greendale seem to be, but that’s minor.

I look forward to watching the rest of this season.

Star Wars news

We have word from a good source, actor Oscar Isaac, that Episode IX will be a lot more improvisational than previous entries in the series. Talking to IndieWire, Oscar said quote “The way they’ve been shooting it right now is looser than it’s been for the last two times,” “It does feel like a relief to get on set and feel like, ‘Oh, we can try things.’ It’s a testament to J.J. coming back and feeling confident. There’s less pressure for it to be right. We just want to make a good movie and have a really good time while doing it.” He than described how different it’s been working on this one versus the previous ones saying quote “Often, you do feel like you’ve got to find your way to make something more alive, but this time, it’s been the opposite,” “There’s no need to smuggle anything in there.” He also addressed the fan backlash and that not all fans have the same expectations. Saying quote ,People had very strong feelings, but there wasn’t as much of an organized way to speak out about it,” “People that run blogs and websites need content. So it’s like, ‘There’s some content!’ Five people on Twitter. Hundreds. Whatever it is. Then you make it into a story.”  Episode IX is due in theaters December 2019.

So….ever want your house to smell like a Wookie? How about an Ewok or a Tauntaun? IN the unusual licensed product category we have Star Wars candle sets. Based on the original trilogy That’s episodes IV to VI. Come three sets of five candles with scents based on things from the movies. A new hope has, Wookie, Batha Milk, Trash Compactor, X-Wing Cockpit and Cantina. The Empire strikes back set has Lightsaber Duel, han solo carbonite, millennium falcon, inside of a tauntaun and yoda’s cooking pot and the Return of the Jedi set has  Rancor, Sarlacc pit, Jabba’s palace, Death Star Destroyed and Ewok. These sets are running around 37 dollars and are due to ship in November.

Boba Fett is dead. That’s the Boba Fett movie that is and teh Mandalorian is to blame. Erick Webber a critic tweeted taht he asked Lucasfilm chief Kathlttn Kennedy about Boba Fett and was told that lucasfilms focus as on Epispde 9, The Mandalorian and Rian Johnsons trilogy. Tough break for the Fett man.

A report from The Blast says that the set of The Mandalorian series has been comprimised and expensive comera equipment is mising. Lucasfilm is apparently worried that a missing memory card with details or forrage from the show could wind up somehow released. The items were apparently taken from the studio at Manhattan Beach, where the production is currently taking place and was most likly done over night. No offical word about this has been forthcoming from Lucasfilm.

Moving over to the animated side of the force, Word has come down that Star Wars resistance will overlap with the force awakens. The series just premiered on the Disney Channel earlier this month.  Head Writer Brandon Auman spoke to the SyFy Wire about how making it clear where the story lies in continuity helps casual or younger fans with a running start on where the story takes place. “It’s a little hard for the younger fans to wrap their heads around it if it was, say 15 years before The Force Awakens,” “Then it’s a very nebulous timeline. You’re kind of not sure. The fact that we’ve got Poe Dameron and BB-8 from the very beginning — kids and any fan of any age automatically just know… ‘This is the new movies, this is where it’s gonna take place,’ so it’s just easier. And it was just fun to kind of roll in and back up a little bit instead of just trying to follow exactly where the movies are at.” Unquote This could mean that we’ll see characters that were introduced, but not explored in the recent movies, will be able to get some story beats of their own to flesh out their characters.

George Lucas might have little to do with Lucasfilm and the Star Wars universe since he sold it to Disney in 2012, but his force is still strong with the franchise. In Solo: A Star Wars Story, the droid L3-37 had a passion for liberating her fellow droids. This actually came from a concept of Lucas’ from back when he was developing the prequel trilogy.

This was revealed in a Target exclusive collectible book that came with the Blu-ray, quote “Lando Calrissian’s literally self-made copilot L3-37 is the first mechanical being in Star Wars to embody another idea that George Lucas devised in the early 2000s: droid rights, activism, and autonomy.”  unquote

Droid Activism wasn’t the only subtle influence of Lucas that was put on the film, as George dropped by the set of Solo and offered input on a scene between Han and Qi’ra on the Falcon. IN an interview with Variety Ron Howard said about the encounter, quote “He said, ‘You know, Han wouldn’t bother to hang it up,’” director Ron Howard shared with Variety. “And then he sort of did it. George became Han Solo for a second. The body language was there and the attitude. Not only was it a nice accent on the scene, but it was also a reminder that George created this character and really understood him. He was so reluctant [to offer his opinion], and yet the choice was so right that it was fun to use it.”

Do you think that the creatives at Lucasfilm should ask for more input from Mr. Lucas?

Have you ever been watching Return of the Jedi and asked yourself how the Ewoks happened to have a dress for Leia to get into? A fan theory posted on Reddit might have a grisly solution given to key facts. First, Ewoks eat people. How do we know this? Cause the Ewoks were getting ready to roast Luke and Han on an open fire to honor C3PO. Second is the face that the dress seems to be made from local material, this means it wasn’t something that Leia just happened to have on her in a pocket on her jacket. If you look at the Ewok’s clothes they don’t seem capable of making something like it.

So that would mean that they just happened to have this dress in their possession when Leia showed up. Where did they get it? Let’s go back to 1984 and The Ewok Adventure. In it The Ewoks help two shipwrecked children on a quest to find their parents. At the end the family stays with the Ewoks until they can repair their ship. The End? What if they never left? What if the Ewoks, after the end of the film, killed and ate the family? That could explain the dress. Of course, I have a couple of alternate theories. One, the family left the dress behind when they left. OR Two, Mom died and the Ewoks kept the dress after the dad and kids left.  So, what theory do you think is correct?

By the way, here’s an odd piece of trivia for you, that film was narrated by Burl Ives. Weird, huh.

Disney has made back the purchase price it paid for Lucasfilm. To date the Star Wars movies made by Disney have grossed $4.83 billion dollars worldwide. Back in 2012, the company was purchased by the mouse by $4 billion dollars.

Star trek News

Lots of Discovery news tidbits to impart here. Beginning with news that Javier Botet who starred in the Slender Man movie, will be an unknown but classic Star Trek alien in season two. Botet told Bloody Disgusting dot com quote, “I can tell you I’ll be working in Star Trek: Discovery in Toronto,” “It’s going to be a very cool role, so I can’t wait to see it. I’ve been working with my friend Doug Jones, another monster performer. I hope you see it very soon.” He teased with the hint that it’s an old creature and that it’s only in one episode. Speculation abounds on what it could be, some guesses have been the a Talosian or a Saurian. I guess we’ll wait and see.

Jason Isaacs has had some time for reflection on his time on Discovery, Speaking with Metro dot News He talked about how it was getting to star in Star Trek saying quote What seven-year-old boy trapped in a 55-year-old man’s body wouldn’t want to fire phasers and pretend the ship is being hit by Klingon torpedoes?”. “It was heartening that the Star Trek community accepted us. They were very resistant at first but most people loved it.” He also talked about the resistance to the show and what he thought it was all about.  Quote “Two things. Firstly, genuine Star Trek fans who are protective about a fandom they’ve been involved in for more than 50 years in some cases,”. “The other aspect was lunatic racists pretending they were Star Trek fans complaining it had a black woman lead and was too PC. Half were bots but what was laughable was they didn’t know anything about Star Trek. It was born out of the civil rights movement, it had the first interracial kiss and it had a Russian on the bridge at the height of the Cold War. At first I would respond to this unbridled racism, misogyny and hatred but when I clicked on their feeds I saw they were members of far-right groups and were using it as an easy target. I stopped responding because they only have eight followers and want the oxygen of publicity.” Unquote

No, my fault with the show wasn’t any of that, it was the fact that it wasn’t good Star Trek, I didn’t care who starred in it or that I’m being protective of the franchise. It just doesn’t fit my view of something calling itself Star Trek. It takes a shoe horn to get it into a continuity that’s already getting stretched thin and let’s face it, they stole the warp effect from Star Wars. Why would different ships in different eras have completely different warp effects anyway? Isn’t it the same space that their “warping”?   That and being behind a paywall, didn’t make me happy either. After watching the show I feel a touch better about it. But I’m still not happy….anyway….

Saru’s homeworld now has a name. At New York Comicon Doug Jones has revealed that the name of his world is Kamanar and that we will be seeing it in season two. We will also see Saru’s sister in that visit, she will be played by Heather Spear. He also says that quote “Season Two [Saru] finds out something about himself and what it means to be a Kelpien that he didn’t know and that you didn’t know and I can’t tell you today,””It will be altering, challenging, evolution? And we get to go to my home planet.” I wonder if we’ll see the predators that eat the Kelpians? Maybe they’re Ewoks!

Meanwhile, over at the Picard show, we gotta get a title for this show. Star trek Picard. Star Trek Retirement. Star Trek The Next Next Generation. Something. Executive Producers Heather Kadin and Alex Kurtzman talked with Digital Spy dot com. Alex said quote  “We pick up Picard 20 years after (The Next Generation),” Heather Kadin told them “The Picard show shouldn’t feel anything like Discovery. It’s not going to look like Discovery, it’s not going to have the same values.
“We want every show to feel unique so that you’re not just signing up for an experience and you get the same one every time.” Unquote

So I hope this means that it’ll look like the next generation with the proper sounds and effects

We also got confirmation that the show will run for several seasons.

Also at NYCC, Alex Kurtzman, who is also in charge of expanding the Trek TV franchise teased that we will be hearing about new Trek series soon. Kadin expanded on that quote “I think the one thing we can say which is more general is that it’s been a real conscious effort that every project we do have its own voice and occupy its own space,” Kadin said. “I don’t mean its own space in canon, I mean its own tonal vision. Because you shouldn’t tune in to Discovery and wonder if you flipped the channel, that it was Picard. They should feel different, they should have different messages coming from different people.” This is great news. That means that if you dislike one, you can watch a different one. Great. Just as long as they at least all look like Star Trek. Kurtzman also said that there will be gaps between shows to allow for anticipation and avoid franchise fatigue. Quote “You have a good meal and then decide to take a walk before you have your dessert,”. “That’s how to look at it.”  I’m betting it won’t be long enough to drop CBS All Access until the new content comes back like a lot do with Discovery now.

We now know what Georgiou is getting out of Section 31. Michelle Yeoh talked with IGN about Georgious new place in this universe. Quote Section 31 has all the most updated gadgets because they are the most informed, and she, as an engineer, she can hack into Section 31. And Leland thinks he’s in charge of the ship. But she finds out secrets. Because that’s what Section 31 does. It’s collected secrets all over the universe about certain people, and history, and things like that. And so, when you have [those] kind of secrets, it’s power. And for Philippa Georgiou, that’s perfect! So, if she has to be here, she wants to be in Section 31, and she wants to run it, right?” unquote.

So what does Mirror Georgiou think of Burnham and their relationship? Quote “It’s always going to be complex between the two of them,” Yeoh said. “Michael is going around with so much guilt from Season 1, after the death of her beloved mentor [and] that mother-daughter relationship. And so when she saw the emperor, she can’t help to feel that that’s still the same Philippa Georgiou. And when she found how hard and ruthless she was, I think, in Michael, she wants to bring that humanity back. That’s Michael Burnham, right? And for Philippa Georgiou, she has a soft spot for Michael Burnham. So we’ll see, in the coming season, how that plays out. Who is going to bring who? Am I gonna bring her to the darker side, or is Michael…” unquote

I just hope that the character won’t be kinda shoehorned into the plot. If her character’s appearance is natural to the plot, it’ll be fine.

Star Trek is getting animated again. CBS has announced a new half hour animated series called Star Trek Lower Decks which shows us one of the support crew on one of Starfleets least important ships.  The show is being developed by Mich McMahan the emmy winning writer from Rick and Morty who will write and Executive produce the show alongside Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, Katie Krentz and Trevor Roth. No word has been given as to the exact plot details or when it will see air on All Access. I’ll be interested the exact details on this.

IN honor of the 10th anniversary of NaSA Fermi Gamma-ray Space telescope, NASA has named 21 new constellations including The Hulk, Godzilla, The Tardis and the Starship Enterprise.

Cosmic. Very Cosmic.

Built in 1981 , the four bedroom house on two acres has bamboo floors, two fireplaces a sonos sound system and a 440 plus square foot terrace with an ocean view. It also has a two car garage and is listed for $5.695 million dollars according to Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. The Uxbridges not included.

Star Trek is getting a new mobile game. Star Trek Fleet Command is a mobile multiplayer strategy RPG set in the Kelvin Timeline from the movies. DC News

Let’s start with some Arrowverse news.

This years crossover will be Elseworlds themed and will introduce Batwoman to the Arrowverse. Even Arrow himself thinks this will be the best crossover ever. Speaking with fans during a Facebook Q&A he said quote “The crossover is fucking bananas. It’s crazy… I think that this will be the best crossover event that we do. And not just the best but the best by a really, really wide margin. And I think that last year was fantastic. “Crisis on Earth X, I think that’s what it was called, that was pretty crazy and getting to play doppelgängers was pretty crazy,” he said. “When Greg Berlanti first talked to me about why he wanted to do crossovers, it was because it’s for the fans. It’s so people can watch characters and scenarios that combine their favorite things on TV or introduce them to new things on TV. But you also get this license to do things that we could never do in the vacuum — especially on Arrow — that we can never do in the vacuum of just our show.”

On that Q&A the topic of his facial hair came up and he revealed that he will be sans beard in an upcoming episode quote “I’m happy to be back to a more normal facial hair length,” Amell said. “It just got to be a bit much towards the end there, but I’m just about to watch a cut of episode seven which I believe is Oliver’s last episode with the beard and that episode is going to be bananas. Just totally bananas.” Unquote He also noted that Oliver will be in prison for longer than anyone expects. Will he be getting out for the crossover?

An according to Melissa Benoist’s Instagram feed, we will be visiting the Kent Farm in Smallville. The one that was home to Clark Kent and family in the tv show Smallville at that.

BTW have you seen the promo image of barry as Green Arrow and oliver as the Flash? Looks interesting.

The synopsis for the October 28th episode has been revealed. The episode, titled Man of Steel will feature the origin story of Agent Liberty played by the Walking Dead’s Sam Witwer. Agent Liberty is the leader of the Children of Liberty, a human first hate group. Very different from the comic version of the character from the 90’s.

Deadline reports that Virginia Madsen has been cast as Maria Sunderland on DC Universes Swamp Thing. The character of Maria Sunderland is described in the article as quote who traded in her privileged upbringing for the swamps of Marais when she married local business magnate Avery Sunderland (not yet cast), but Avery’s life-time obsession with the swamp has driven a wedge between him and Maria. Her poised existence is shaken further when the return of Abby Arcane reawakens a deep grief over the loss of Maria’s daughter, Shawna, drawing her into the dark supernatural mysteries emerging from the swamp. Unquote The series is set to premiere in the DC service in 2019.

On to other DC news,

Zazie Beetz, who played Domino in Deadpool 2 and has one of the most fun names to say thinks it would be fun to crossover with margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, speaking at the ACE Comicon where she was asked by a fan who she’d like to see Domino paired with in the MCU she said quote “I just thought Harley Quinn, but she’s not Marvel,”. “But I feel like that could be such a fun combination.” She went on to say that on the Marvel side she like to work in the Iron Man side of things saying quote “I just think it’d be fun to do a movie with [Robert Downey Jr]. I feel like a Deadpool-Iron Man thing could be fun.” By the way, she’s expected to reprise the role of Domino in an X-Force spinoff film, as to if that goes forth is up in the air till the merger completes.

Director Ava DuVernay would like to remind us  fans that the New Gods movie is still in the pipeline. She’s been engaging with fans on twitter with panels from the comics. Specifically, from Final Crisis number five, could this mean that she’ll be using bits from not only the original run of New Gods, but the New 52 version? Unknown. And unknown is the release date for the film. Hopefully we’ll get more on that soon.

Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson wants to play Catwoman. Ugh. During an interview with Vanity Fair the actress, who was hooked up to a lie detector for this, was asked if she’d ever like to star in a Marvel movie and who she’d like to play, she said yes and that she wanted to play Catwoman…before being old that Catwoman is a DC Comics character.  Yeah, Warner Bros. do better.

The Harley Quinn animated series starting Kaley Cuoco has found it’s scarecrow.  Rahul Kohli who portrays Ravi Chakrabarti on iZombie. The series follows our favorite harley quinn in a series of adventures after she breaks up with the Joker and strikes out on her own joined by Poison Ivy and a band of ragtag DC Castoffs. Sounds good.

And just to show that Warner Bros answers prayers, DC on the DC Daily show has officially confirmed that James Gunn is writing Suicide Squad 2. Host Tiffany Smith said that quote “Gunn is poised to bring a completely fresh take to the franchise after the first film was written and directed by David Ayer.” unquote Filmmaker Gavin O’Conner had been tapped to direct Suicide Squad 2, but had to step away to take over another project. Could we see Gunn also direct? We can only hope.

And this just in, Wonder Woman 1984 aka Wonder Woman 2 has been pushed back 7 months from Novembder 1, 2019 to June 5, 2020. This puts the film back where it belongs in the summer movie camp.

The end of Gotham is on the horizon. The debut date for the final season and will get two episodes to end it on. The now twelve episode season will start on Fox on January third. Just to note that by adding the two episodes the total number of episodes will be one hundred.

Entertainment Weekly has shared a first look at The Monitor, played by LaMonica Garrett, who will be part of the focus of the Elseworlds themed crossover in the Arrowverse this year.

Marvel News

If you remember Chris Evans tweeted out a goodbye to the role of Captain America. Or did he. He recently talked about it at the ACE Comic con in Chicago. Quote “I should clarify that I know I did tweet something that made a lot of people think that it was in someway a spoiler,” “I should clarify that regardless of how Avengers 4 ends, I would have tweeted the exact same thing. That last day of filming was a very emotional day and it was the culmination of almost 10 years of filming and 22 movies, this unbelievable tapestry.

“You feel a lot more emotions than I think even I thought I’d feel. And I felt it was appropriate to share the gratitude. I know it had a ripple effect but I am neither confirming or denying anything.”

So…do you think he might come back to the role? Or is it really over. What’s your thoughts?

If you’ve been watching Marvel’s Agents of Shield the last five years and thought to yourself, feels more like Marvel’s Quake, featuring the Agents of Shield, you’re not far off. On reddit, fan Cigixx calculated all of Daisey’s screen time to come up with a total of 897 minutes from season one to the end of season five. 898 if you count the LMD Daisy. The show, was sold to fans as centering around Agent Coulson and his team. Season six will be even more Daisy as she takes front and center to lead the team with Coulson and May retiring to Tahiti…It’s a magical place. The new season will be next July and was moved to summer with the hopes of earning a season seven. Time will tell.

Doctor Strange 2 and Infinity War actor Benedict wong has teased that he will return to the role of Wong this year. Hinting at Fan expo Vancouver that he would be filming it in December. The film has yet to be formally announced yet. So this announcement is Strange…but True?

Infinity War was a tour de force of acting and special effects, but there’s only one Oscar that Disney is campaigning for Best Visual Effects for the team of Dan Deleeuw, Kelly Port, Russell Earl, and Dan Sudick. It’s trying for a lot of categories for Black Panther including Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor (7), Best Supporting Actress (4), Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup & Hairstyling, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song. Could this be because Infinity War was a huge visual effect feast more than an acting triumph? Or could it be because their is such a large cast they wouldn’t want to insult those not nominated. Who knows. The Oscar nominations will be announced in January 22nd.

Best selling author Chuck Wendig was unceremoniously fired from Marvel’s Star Wars comics after the editorial department took issue with his tweets. Quote “Today I got the call. I’m fired. Because of the negativity and vulgarity that my tweets bring. Seriously, that’s what Mark, the editor said. It was too much politics, too much vulgarity, too much negativity on my part,” he tweeted. From his understanding this was a Marvel decision and not from Lucasfilm. IN his large tweetstorm about his firing he tweeted. The editor said he had made the call. He seemed genuinely upset at my tweets and profanity, so maybe that’s accurate. And again, that’s his right to do so. If they honestly feel that my presence will damage the book, I don’t want that. I want the book to shine, and artists like Juanan Ramirez and Greg Smallwood to do their amazing thing. Artists like that are gods in my mind, so I’m happy to not distract from their literal magic. But it does set a troubling precedent. One we’ve seen already – James Gunn, Jessica White, and so on – of folks fired because they riled up the wasp’s nest of asterisk-gate.”  Mr. Wendig has been the target of right wingers since he introduced LGBT characters in his novel Star Wars: Aftermath and has been the target of coordinated campaigns to drive down his review scored and get him fired. As a result the Shadow of Vader mini series taht was due out in January has been cancelled.

Geek News

The Orville Season Two is coming on December 30th

And the storylines have been teased for the season, a press release from Fox said quote “In Season Two, ED (MacFarlane) and KELLY’s (Adrianne Palicki) relationship will take a new turn, while the ship’s crew will meet never-before-seen aliens, face old adversaries the Krill, make first contact with a new civilization and revisit the planet Moclus.” unquote. I can’t wait to see it.

Sony is working on a new console to replace its aging Playstation Four console. Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida, speaking to the Financial times said that quote “At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware”.

Tessa Thompson has given us a look st the new Men In Black movie she’s co starring in with Chris Hemsworth. The image, released on her Instagram shows Tessa and Chris dressed in black suits and shades walking shaded by umbrellas in the desert. We don’t know much of the plot  but we do know the film will not have Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones but will expand on the MIB universe. The film will feature Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, Kumail Nanjiani and Rafe Spall and will arrive in theaters on June fourteenth 2019.https://www.instagram.com/tessamaethompson/?utm_source=ig_embed

A Convention Story: There and Back Again.

So Wizard World Tulsa has come and gone. This was a much much smaller convention than in years past.

No competitive gaming, No comic book writers , not nearly as many vendors as previous years. But it was still enjoyable.

The best part of the convention were the panels. The State of Trek panel was particularly good and I talked with them for a few monuments at the end.

I got a couple of interviews, one with author Sabrina A. Fish and one with a vendor selling some gay pirate novellas (Don’t ask), I’ll have those posted in the near future

One of the biggest surprises of the con was that the MC at the entertainment stage was Kato Kaelin. (For those of you born later than 1990, please turn to the old person on your left and ask who that is…or just ask Google.

I would give a shoutout to Fanboys 918 for that excellent Star Trek panel and to the Best Western Plus Downtown Tulsa, which gave us a free upgrade to a suite for the weekend.

I look forward to next years convention. We don’t know what the date will be yet. So fingers crossed.

Marvel News:

A new rumor has surfaced from the site Geeks WorldWide that Deadpool 2 director David Leitch will be returning to direct Deadpool 3. The Site notes that Leitch has the Fast and Furious spinoff Hobbs and Shaw next with filming from September to January. That could mean that Deadpool 3 wouldn’t begin production till sometime next August.  Which would also be well after the Disney/Fox deal will be done.

Speaking of Geeks Worldwide, They have a report from Omega Underground  that Marvel Studios is looking to begin filming a Phase Four movie next June in the United Kingdom. The big three candidates would be Black Widow, Doctor Strange 2 or The Eternals.  Those three are movies that are known, but have yet to have any dates attached to them. The vast knowledge of what will be in the Phase Four of the MCU is unknown, other than Spiderman: Far From Home which is set to come out next fourth of july weekend.

Well let’s get to the news concerning the firing of James Gunn on Guardians 3. As you might have heard, Disney and Marvel will not be rehiring Gunn, and will instead be looking for a new director. One name has already come forward to say Take me off your list.

Steven DeKnight, who served as Executive Producer for the first season of Daredevil in addition to directing the lackluster Pacific Rim Uprising was asked on twitter if he would be willing to step into the role if offered. He answered, quote “I would politely decline,. “No way in hell I could come close to what @JamesGunn has accomplished.”

So anyone else want the job?

Jessica Jones series creator and Executive Producer Melissa Rosenberg will be leaving after the series upcoming third season for a new deal with Warner Brothers Television, where she has signed a contract worth tens of millions according to the Hollywood reporter. Apparently Netflix DID try to retain her services, but the contract from Warners was just too great. In a statement Melissa said quote “All of my attention remains with the extraordinary cast, writers and production team of Marvel’s Jessica Jones, until the completion of season three,” “It continues to be a career highlight working with my partners at Marvel Television and Netflix. We’re extraordinarily grateful to the viewers who have supported us every step of the way on Jessica’s journey, which is so beautifully realized by Krysten Ritter and the amazing cast including Rachael Taylor, Eka Darville and Carrie-Anne Moss. We have so many talented storytellers in every area of this show, who I’m honored to call friends and collaborators. As I look ahead after this season, I’m thrilled that I will be able to explore new projects with the talented team at Warner Bros. Television and push myself in new challenging creative directions.” Unquote

The cast of Deadpool 2 was asked by Buzzfeed quote  “If you could have anyone from any franchise join the X-Force, who would it be?” unquote

Suggestions put forward by the cast included Howard the Duck, the Blob, Cilene Dion and Captain Planet. Ryan Renolds had the big winner, suggesting Hugh Jackman but not as Wolverine. Just plain old Hugh Jackman, maybe singing as his Les Miz character.  Well here’s to hoping Ryan. Here’s to hoping.

Doctor Strange, Master of the Mystical Arts and Acerbic Wit will be back. Yeah, he dissolved into nothingness in Infinity War, but that’s immaterial. Dissolved. Immaterial. Get it. A rumor reported by the Mirror indicates that filming will begin in Spring 2019, giving it a probable fall release date in 2020. Allegedly, he will get a pay raise of 6 million more than the first movie netting the Master of the sling ring 9.5 million. I would love it if it had some interaction with Spider-man.

DC Comics

DC’s Suicide Squad movie hit theaters two years ago, man that’s seems like ages ago. Apparently it is paying some dividends, On Twitter, comic book writer Jai Nitz, whose version of el Diablo was featured in the film, posted “Did you like El Diablo in @DavidAyerMovies Suicide Squad? Good. Because it just bought me a house. #CasaDelDiablo” He posted that with a picture of him and his new house.

Speaking of Suicide Squad, news around the sequel has been quiet. Todd Stashwich will pen the script with David Bar Katz and Gavin O’Conner will direct. However it looks like it will be getting delayed a report from Geek WorldWide indicates that Smith will film Bad Boys 3 and the sequel to the Netflix film Bright next. This will push back filming on Suicide Squad two for quite some time.  Warner Bros seems to be shifting it’s current priorities to The Joker, Birds of Prey, The Flash and The Batman movies. Shazam! Is now in post production and will come out this April. SHAZAM! Damn, still not working.

In an interview with Bustle dot com, Legends of Tomorrow stars Tala Ashe, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, and Caity Lotz, Arrow’s Juliana Harkavy, and The Flash’s Candice Patton said that they’d be up for an all female crossover. Tala Ashe said quote “On our own show, all of us separately have said to the writers, ‘Let’s have a girls’ episode,'” “Not just for the sake of having a girls’ night, but realizing that it’s kind of rare, actually, to be in a scene where it’s just women. What is that conversation between five [superhero] women when it’s not about a man? That would be exciting to me, so yeah, let’s freaking crossover it up!” And it’s not like they want to just get rid of the men for an episode, they just think it would be fun for the women to have a team up by themselves. Now while there’s no indication of am all women crossover, there will be more women kicking but in the Arrowverse with the addition of Ruby Rose staring in Batwoman and joining this years crossover.

Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen series has officially been green lite at HBO. There’s no official release date yet but the show should debut in 2019.HBO’s press release officially confirmed the show’s extensive, all-star cast list. The full list includes Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Adelaide Clemens, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Lily Rose Smith, and Adelynn Spoon. The press release had the following logline for the series. Quote Set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own. Unquote Kinda vague. What we do know is that it won’t follow the same story or characters from the original story.

So are you ready for Watchmen sans The Watchmen?

And speaking of shows coming to series Pennyworth has been ordered to series by Epix. The show that centers around Alfred Pennyworth’s younger days will consist of 10 episodes and will begin filming in London in November. The series will tell the story of Alfred Pennyworth in 1960s London, after his time serving in the British SAS. Batman’s father, Thomas Wayne, will also have a major role in the show, as he is set to be a major ally for Alfred.

All this needs is James Bond, Austin Powers and The Avengers team-up.

The Wilmington Star News reports that DC Comics Swamp Thing series will begin filming in the North Carolina town in September. The series, which is set for a thirteen episode first season will be filmed at EUE/Screen Gems Studios and will run on the DC Universe digital streaming service.

Toymaker hasbro and DC Comics have settled a trade dispute over the name Bumblebee. The transformers maker sought to block sales of a Mattel doll based on the superhero who has the ability to shrink arguing that it caused confusion in the marketplace with their own Transformer, the yellow Autobot called, Bumblebee. *sigh*

Terms of the settlement were not disclosed and no one on either side had a comment to Variety dot com.

A Bumblebee spin off movie is coming to theaters on December 21st.

Just to set the record straight, the DC Comics character of Bumblebee predates the Transformer, she debuted in the Teen Titans in 1977. The Transformer was introduced in 1983 and they obtained the trademark on the Bumblebee name in 2015. It’s amazing that no one trademarked that name before that.

So now they can all Buzz off.

Writer Scott Snyder has officially addressed whether or not the 2013 Batman Zero year storyline is still DC Comics cannon. The recent 2011 reboot of DC, The New 52, erased some parts of DC Universe continuity but kept some as well.

But with Doomsday Clock and Justice League causing more ripples in the universe Scott was asked on twitter if Zero Year still was. His reply quote It’s all supposed to be right now. Bc of what’s happening in Doomsday Clock, there can be fluidity so a lot of pre and post new 52 material co exist. Also, I always feel Bruce wore the great classic costume most of his early career. ZY is specific to ZY.

So the answer for right now is Yes. But it’s still subject to change.

In this age where comic book properties are being made into movies and tv, it’s almost shocking to learn when something didn’t come into being.

Moon and Warcraft director Duncan Jones has revealed on twitter that he once pitched a Prez movie to Warner Brothers and the studio didn’t go for it.

First a little backstory, Prez is a DC character from a short lived 1973 comic series by Joe Simon and Jerry Grandenetti. It focused around Prez Rickard who becomes america’s first teenage president and gets into all sorts of weird things like vampires, werewolves and George Washington’s descendant. It was cancelled after four issues. Dropped in the quarter box of history. Enter Duncan Jones. He has said that his take on Prez would have been inspired by a story Neil Gaiman wrote in 1993 for his seminal fantasy horror series, Sandman.

Quote I’ve mentioned this once before, but there was a fantastic DC comic book called Prez once upon a time that [Neil Gaiman] did a spin on, about a young kid genius who solves the problems of the world,”Unquote  Jones further elaborated Quote “I wanted to make that movie but DC guy at WB not interested.” “Didn’t fit in with their ‘fights in tights’ ethos, I guess.” Unquote Now while this version of the character might not see the light of day anytime soon, the character was revived by DC in 2015 for a six issue miniseries about a teenage girl named Beth ross who also becomes President and chooses Prez as her vice president. It was very well received.

DC Universes Doom Patrol series has found it’s Cliff Steele aka Robotman. Brenden Fraser, who is known for 1999’s The Mummy and it’s sequels, Dudley Do-Right and George of the Jungle, will voice Robotman, as well as appear as Cliff Steele in flashbacks. Here’s the official character description: “A former race car driver, Cliff Steele was in a horrific accident that left his body uninhabitable. Cliff’s brain was saved by the mysterious Dr. Caulder and he lives on in a powerful robotic body.” Fraser joins “Orange Is the New Black” star Diane Guerrero, who will play Crazy Jane, and “The First Purge” star Joivan Wade, who will play Cyborg.

Legendary composer Hans Zimmer will return to the DC Universe according to Film Music Reporter, Zimmer has agreed to score Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman 1984/ Zimmer last composed superhero music for Batman HansV Superman in 2016. He is replacing Rupert Gregson-Williams who did the score for the first wonder woman movie.

Star Wars

Deadline reports that Lord of The rings and Lost star Dominic Monaghan has been cast in Star Wars Nine, the search for more money. With the news ,Dominic has said quote “The galaxy far far away has had almost as much influence as the one I live in, so I am delighted to be involved,” He reoprtedly joins Keri russell, Naomi Ackie and richard E Grant as new to the franchise actors.

The new Star Wars animated series Star Wars Resistance will be bringing some big talent with it. Including Oscar Isaac voicing Poe Dameron and Gwendoline Christie  as Phasma. The first trailer has revealed that Leia Organa will be featured in the series voiced by Rachel Butera. Here’s the description of the series. Quote “Resistance fighter Poe Dameron tasks young pilot Kazuda (Kaz) Xiono with spying on the First Order. At the time, little was known about the secretive organization and its strength. In order to fulfill his mission, Kaz travels to the space station Colossus, which is being used by many ships as a port to refuel and do repairs. However, there are also dangerous races taking place there. After Kaz bragged with his piloting skills at his arrival there, he is soon drawn into one of the races…” unquote The series takes place in the time between Return to the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

The novelization for Solo A Star Wars Story includes a deleted scene with a couple of characters from the old Extended Universe, Tag and Bink. Tag and Bink are from a Dark Horse Star Wars comedy comic called Tag and Bink are Dead. The two characters find their way in and out of the main star wars story, accidently influencing the events of the Star Wars universe with comic results.

According to Jonathan Kasdan quote “One of the things we went back and forth on a lot is that both Larry [Kasdan, co-writer] and I felt that it was important to see Han in the Imperial Academy, in the Navy, because we wanted to see him become this pilot,” Kasdan shared with ComicBook.com. “And from the first draft through the last draft, there was a chunk of the movie — Very short. Like, I’d say 80 seconds long — That showed him in the Imperial Academy doing some sort of flight things, sort of disobeying a direct order, and getting kicked out.” Kasdan and his first AD played Tag and Bink in the scene, but Ron Howard cut the scene, even though Ron’s wife Cheryl was in the scene too. Quote “We were so sure, too, that Ron actually put his wife, Cheryl, who has to be in all his movies because it’s his only superstition, into the scene because he’s like, ‘Well, this is the one thing that isn’t coming out,'” “And then it did come out, and Ron had to get Cheryl over to Disney and CGI her into another shot just so we weren’t cursed. So, when I think you’ll see Tag and Bink is on the Blu-ray, because no way we’re putting that on Blu-ray without the Imperial Academy sequence. It’s a great sequence, too.” The novelization hits shelves on September 4th, while the Bluray hits shelves on September 25th.

Neil Lamont, one of the production designers at Lucasfilm has told Cinemablend that he and his team had begun work on a Tatooine set for an unknown spinoff Neil told them quote

We were just starting our work on another Star Wars spin-off and yeah. We were actually just making our mark on Tatooine — which would have been interesting and some other new galaxies,” Lamont shared with CinemaBlend. “So hopefully, if that comes back, we’ll get the chance to be able to do that further.”

He didn’t elaborate on why they stopped, but speculation has begun on what the set might have been for. Could it have been the Obi-Wan movie? Or Boba Fett? The conclusion that CinemaBlend came too was a possible idea for a Mos Eisley Spaceport movie something that would revolve around the hometown of Luke Skywalker.

This might have been interesting, but with Solo being a box office disappointment, Lucasfilm seems to be narrowing their strategy at the moment. I guess once bitten, twice shy.

Well if you had the theory that actor Richard E. Grant would be playing Grand Admiral Thrawn, I hope you didn’t put any money on that. The actor told Radio Times when the question was brought up quote“I’m not playing the Star Wars character you just mentioned,” “I’m not allowed to tell you anything. Otherwise I would be fired.” unquote

I guess we’ll have to keep dreaming

Star Trek news

Garrett Wang at Star Trek Las Vegas suggest that Paramount would have been better off if they would have made a Voyager movie instead of the much maligned Star Trek Nemesis. Wang told the crowd  quote “I think Voyager’s ‘Endgame,’ the final episode, the first hour was amazing,’ Wang said (via Trek Movie). ‘The second hour tied things up too quickly, right? They should have aired the first hour on your television screen and on the end say ‘To be continued in a theater near you’ and film a Voyager two and a half hour movie, got rid of the Nemesis script. Because let’s face it, if your TNG feature film script is not as good as certain TNG TV episodes, don’t film it. Sorry.”

Heck, I think they should have had Voyager return to the Alpha Quadrant  at the beginning of the movie only to have to team up with the Next Gen cast to defeat the Borg Queen for good.

Darn it. Bad News, Amazon’s adaptation of Galaxy Quest is on hold. Writer paul Scheer told the Wrap that the firing of Amy Powell as president of Paramount TV has hurt the project. Quote“We currently are in a little bit of a hold pattern because our executive at Paramount, Amy Powell, was fired for some insensitive comments,”  He went on to say that they want to create something that feel like an epic sequal to the movie, continuing the story while bringing in new characters. Quote “So it is mixing two casts. It’s separate kind of adventures that kind of merge, and I’m looking at this first season not as episodic, but as a serialized story,”. “So, the only way I’ve been looking at it is, using everything from the first movie and making the reasons for everything not just – I want to avoid anything that could be viewed as a reboot for reboot’s sake. There are real reasons behind these choices – maybe too much so.” Unquote

So think of it has a movie told in a season long arc.

Franchise Fatigue. To define it simply, it’s when too much of a property is produced in too short of a time period without much distinction between products causing fans to walk away because they’ve seen it all.

In the early 2000’s Star Trek found itself mired in it. Star Trek Enterprise ended and no new films or series were planned. The property was dormant for four years until JJ Abrams launched the Kelvin Timeline movies.

Now Star Trek is back with new series on CBS All Access and multiple movies on the horizon. Ronald D. Moore, veteran writer from the golden age of the franchise in the 90’s spoke about it during a panel at Star Trek Las Vegas quote“When you say something like franchise fatigue, to me, it means that particular flavor had run dry,” Moore said during a panel at Star Trek Las Vegas (via Trek Movie). “To mix my metaphors, essentially that way of doing Star Trek, that way of telling story, and those kinds of stories had run its course. You could just see in the shows. It had fatigue. It was tired. It wasn’t really engaging anymore or felt like it was just standing in place.” unquote

Moore than went on to say that the key to overcoming the fatigue is to bring in new talent, new ideas and a willingness to change the rules of the franchise.

Ron than spoke about the concerns about the new Trek franchise and that having new Trek year round won’t be a problem as long as CBS is providing distinct offerings.

Quote“Where you are now it’s like, okay, it’s all been reinvented, it looks completely different, the style is very different, the stories are different, so it doesn’t feel like you’re in danger of franchise fatigue just because there’s a lot of them coming out,” he said. “If they’re all the same or if they just start becoming the same meal over and over again, then you’ll run into fatigue and they’ll have the same problems.” Unquote

Are you worried that Trek might run into franchise fatigue faster when they have Trek year round?

Speaking of CBS All Access, CBS and Amazon have announced that the limited commercial version of All Access is now available as an Amazon Channel. The commercial free version has been available since last year.

Wil Wheaton has walked away from Twitter. He took part in #DeactiDay a movement meant to encourage Twitter users to deactivate their accounts either temporarily or permanently. Posting on twitter he said quote Twitter is broken. You deserve better than an app that tolerates and welcomes the spreading of abuse and misinformation. Being part of this is not doing us any good. Personally, politically, socially. For a day, a week, forever: your call. It’s just a good time to go. #DeactiDay unquote

Wil has been constantly taunted with Shut Up Wil memes for years. ON one hand, I don’t blame him for wanting to get away from that. On the other, I think he should have embraced those memes and made it part of his brand.

Wil, come on back to twitter, rise above this and show those haters that you’re bigger than they are.

The news that Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth have walked away from the negotiating table means Star Trek 4 is in jeopardy. Might it be time for the film franchise to go another way? In an interview with CNET John Cho says that he would be interested in a spinoff movie starring Hikaru Sulu. In reference to the Star Wars spinoff movies like Solo:A Star Wars story. “If Solo, why not Sulu?” “I don’t know if there is a day shooting Star Trek where Chris Pine did not call me Solo.” That aside, Cho doesn’t know anything about the next Star Trek movie telling CNET that he quote “I know very little about this,” Cho says. “I’ve heard we’re going to do one. But beyond that, I don’t have details. I’d rather not know; I don’t want to lie. The boring answer is to wait for the powers that be to make a decision.” unquote  Well listen to my show John and if the news breaks I’ll let you know about it.

Geek News

She was portrayed by Chole Grace Moretz in the film adaption of Kick-Ass.  Mark Millar has characterized the story as Hit-Girl taking on Hollywood storming Hollywood and taking on Hollywood predators. Although Kevin Smith later clarified

Quote “First off, despite what Mark Millar said, my Hit-Girl arc is not about Hollywood predators — it’s about the making of a Hit-Girl movie,” “There are no jokes about the Me Too movement (obviously) or even references to real world horror stories.”

All right brain storming time, what DC or Marvel role would be a good fit for Denzel Washington? Denzel, on the press tour for his new sequel The Equalizer 2 said he is open to joining a superhero franchise. However he quote “I haven’t been approached… we’ll see what happens,” Unquote Denzel has done a comic book adaptation before costaring with Mark Wahlberg in 2 Guns. This ones a toughy, maybe Green lantern John Stewart or howbout Spidey villain Mysterio? What do you think? Send in your suggestions!
