Blurbs have been released for the new Simon & Schuster Star Trek novels. First off in June is Dayton Ward’s Agents of Influence, an Original Series novel. Here’ the blurb quote For years, Starfleet Intelligence agents have carried out undercover assignments deep within the Klingon Empire. Surgically altered and rigorously trained in Klingon culture, they operate in plain sight and without any direct support, while collecting information and infiltrating the highest levels of imperial power. Their actions have given Starfleet valuable insight into the inner workings of the Klingon government and its relentless military apparatus.

After three of Starfleet’s longest serving agents fear exposure, they initiate emergency extraction procedures. Their planned rendezvous with the USS Endeavour goes awry, threatening to reveal their activities and the damaging intelligence they’ve collected during their mission. Tasked by Starfleet to salvage the botched rescue attempt, Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise must discover the truth behind a secret weapons experiment while avoiding an interstellar incident with the potential to ignite a new war between the Federation and one of its oldest adversaries. Unquote

Next up is John Jackson Miller’s Discovery novel Die Standing coming out in July quoteNo one in the history of histories has lost more than Philippa Georgiou, ruler of the Terran Empire. Forced to take refuge in the Federation’s universe, she bides her time until Section 31, a rogue spy force within Starfleet, offers her a chance to work as their agent. She has no intention of serving under anyone else, of course; her only interest is escape.

But when a young Trill, Emony Dax, discovers a powerful interstellar menace, Georgiou recognizes it as a superweapon that escaped her grasp in her own universe. Escorted by a team sent by an untrusting Federation to watch over her, the emperor journeys to a region forbidden to travelers. But will what she finds there end the threat—or give “Agent Georgiou” the means to create her old empire anew? Unquote

August brings us a new Kelvin Timeline book, More Beautiful Than Death from David Mack quote Captain James T. Kirk and the Enterprise crew escort Spock’s father, Ambassador Sarek of Vulcan, to a dilithium-rich planet called Akiron. They arrive to find this world under siege by creatures that some of the planet’s denizens believe are demons. Sarek orders Kirk to abandon the mission, but the young captain won’t turn his back on people in danger. After a harrowing encounter with the dark-energy “demons,” Kirk’s belief in a rational universe is challenged by a mystic who insists that it wasn’t coincidence that brought Kirk to Akiron, but the alien equivalent of a Karmic debt.

Meanwhile, aboard the Enterprise, Sarek’s young Vulcan aide L’Nel has a sinister agenda—and its chief objective appears to be the cold-blooded murder of Spock! Unquote

In October, we have Kirsten Beyer’s next Voyager novel, To Lose the Earth, this book has been delayed because of her other work on Discovery and Picard, here’s the blurb quote As the crew of the Full Circle fleet works to determine the fate of their lost ship, the Galen, a struggle for survival begins at the far edge of the galaxy. New revelations about Species 001, the race that built the biodomes that first drew the fleet to investigate planet DK-1116, force Admiral Kathryn Janeway to risk everything to learn the truth.unquote

Well happy reading or in my case listening, I don’t have much time to actually read.

Star wars

Star Wars actor Jake Lloyd has had many struggles with mental health. The actor best known for his role Anakin Skywalker i nThe Phantom Menace. And has had many struggles including run in with the law and the unexpected passing of his younger sister a couple of years ago.

In a statement with Geek News Now, Jake’s mother talked about her son’s present state quote “We would like to thank everyone for their kind words, their support, and goodwill,” the statement reads. “Jake has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, but unfortunately he also has a symptom called anosognosia which causes a lack of insight into his illness. This only adds to the struggle he faces, which has been very difficult after the tragic loss of his younger sister, Madison. He has moved closer to his family and we are all working hard to help him with this. He is still a kind and caring person and we hope to have him back to his fun and entertaining self as soon as possible. Jake will continue to make progress with the love and support you continue to show.” unquote  My heart goes out to him. I wish him peace and long life.

The Mandalorian second season comes to Disney Plus this October. In the First quarter earnings call CEO Bob Iger , The show has been very successful for Disney with 65 percent of viewers of the show going on to try at least ten other offerings on the streamer.

Mark Hamill got a surprise last month. An Arizona bookstore tweeted the actor saying that it had found his original copy of the Star Wars soundtrack and wanted to send it back to him.. How did they know it was his, the record sleeve was personally inscribed by John Williams to Mark. In an interview with the New York Times on Monday Mark said quote I wasn’t completely sure that it was mine,“”But I know that I’d had an album signed by John. How would they know that?” Mark didn’t even know that it was missing and had assumed it was still in the basement of his California home with the rest of his record collection.  How it got to Bookmans Entertainment Exchange in Flagstaff, Arizona, who can say. All the store knows is that it showed up in a collection a lady brought in from her deceased father’s collection. The record had even been temporarily [but on sale before it was taken down, it was posted on twitter soon there after where Mr. Hamill saw it. Within days, it was in the mail back to it’s Jedi owner.Mark said quote “This is so above and beyond, considering they could’ve sold it.” Unquote Mark made his grattitude clear encouraging his twitter fans to visit the store and he signed some memorabilia for the store incudingg a Star wars DVD and a replica of the medal given to Luke and Han at the end of A New Hope.

The Star Wars A Galaxy Far far Away Show at Disney’s hollywood studios is closing. The show , which featured classic moments from the Skywalker Saga brought to live on stage will be closing soon, however there apparently is no set end date. However there are rumors that the show will close a week after the scheduled opening of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway on March fourth I’m guessing it’s no longer needed with Galaxy’s Edge.

Taika Waititi is downplaying the rumors that he was offered a Star wars film. When asked about it by entertainment weekly, the Oscar award winning director slash actor said quote “Listen, what does ‘approached’ even mean?” “I’ve seen Star Wars, that’s about as far as it got.” Pushed on the subject further he said quote  “Look, I’m not an idiot,” “Who would actually say no to Star Wars? Of course, I didn’t send that idea very seriously, it’s more that in light of all the things that were happening over the last couple of months, it would make me a little nervous.” unquote. So it sounds like no, but he wouldn’t say no. So come on, Lucasfilm. Balls in your court, unless this is all a big lie? But let’s just deal with facts and not rumours.

Some more sad news to report actor Alan Harris has passed away after a battle with lung cancer. His career mostly was as an extra or stand in. But he is known to Star Wars fans as the bounty hunter Bossk in the Empire Strikes Back, he was also a security guard on Bespin. Over his career he showed up in the Living Daylights, Doctor Who, Top Secret!, Return of the Jedi, . Flash Gordon, The Shining, Superman: The Movie, Return of the Jedi and The Avengers among others usually uncredited. He was 81 years old.

Lethal Weapon 5 is now in development. According to It Chapter Two producer Dan Lin it will be the last one. The story itself is very personal to him. Mel [Gibson] and Danny [Glover] are ready to go, so it’s about the script.”

Actor Orson Bean has passed away after being hit by two cars while walking in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles. Episode 63: Parasite sucks The Joker’s Oscars away

Tonight! Owen Wilson might be coming to an MCU show near you, Wonder Woman has a new weapon and who won the Oscars much more on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Greetings and welcome to the comics edition of Multiverse Tonight.  Episode 62.

So did you watch the Oscars this past Sunday. It was…okay. There were a few surprises  like Eminem , the fact that Joker didn’t sweep the awards and John Williams not winning. Really thought that Mister Williams should have won. Anyway, if you missed it apparently you’re not alone, the Oscars Viewership sank to a new low this year. And I’ve noticed a lot of the usual complaints. Lack of diversity in the acting categories. Too much politics. Which is surprising because there weren’t a lot of big moments of politics, a few speeches, maybe not as much as a few years ago. Too long? Eh. It was about three and a half hours. Pretty typical. I could shorten it by not having the best songs all performed during the course of the evening, but having them shown in clips or maybe a medley of some kind?  Maybe no confusing performances by Eminem? I’ve also seen some complaints about how so and so was missing from the In Memoriam section. Folks, they only have so much time to do that and a lot of people can die in the course of the year and it’s not just actors, it’s all members of the Motion Picture Association of America. Plus, some of these people will be remembered at other award shows. Just as long as YOU remember them, that’s the important part.

Marvel

Rick And Morty are known to exist in multitudes of universes on the show, but did you know they exist in other franchises universes? Or rather the show does,  In Marvel’s Marauders number six, Rick and Morty gets a mention when Yellowjacket mentions that Pyro has quote made himself a couple of Long Island iced teas and now he’s in the yacht’s movie theater watching Rick and Morty.” unquote  Well that makes me wonder, Oni Press currently makes the Rick and Morty comics, perhaps Marvel and Oni can come together for a Marvel/Rick & morty crossover? Anyone wanna start a tweet hashtag for that?

Marvel Comics will have a new wanna be Captain America character in its upcoming Falcon & Winter Soldier miniseries.  The Natural is described as a Captain America superfan vigilante who will pose a threat to the duo. Falcon and Winter Soldier writer Derek Landy told comic book dot com quote “In combat, no matter how good you are, there will always be someone better than you,””Someone who’s stronger, or quicker, or who’s trained that little bit more. Even someone who’s luckier. That’s where the Natural came from — that fear in a fighter’s mind that, maybe, their next opponent will be the one to outclass them.” Artist Federico Vicentini added quote “He wants to be Captain America, his idol, his hero, but he does that from the wrong side of the barricade, unaware of his mistakes,” “Bucky and Sam will have to do their best to show him what it really means to be Captain America. For his costume I tried to keep some details from Cap’s old one (the boots, for example), but I also added something new, like the black logo on his chest and mask, to point out the dark traits of his behavior.” Unquote

Falcon and winter Soldier number one comes out on February 26.

Actor Owen Wilson is in talks to join Disney Plus’ Loki series according to sources close to the Hollywood reporter. What character he possibly could be playing is unknown. Rick and Morty writer Michael Waldron is writing the plot for the show and will be acting as show creator and executive producer.

While we don’t have a release window for the series yet, The Falcon and The WinterSoldier will be coming in August and WandaVision will debut in December.

Fast 9 star  Tyrese Gibson gave an update on his character in Sony’s Morbius and how the film is progressing. Tyrese will be playing Agent Shroud. He told Comic book dot com at the F9 event in Miami quote “I play a character named Agent Shroud, Agent Simon Shroud, opposite Jared Leto. It’s the Spider-Man spinoff, Morbius, Venom, Marvel. I’m just excited to be a part of this franchise. I love the Fast & the Furious but I’ve been wanting to be a part of another franchise. Because, the last time I was in a franchise was Transformers, which is not too shabby.” unquote

Fast and Furious, Transformers. Well he does have a knack for being in successful franchises. Could Tyrese rub off on the extended Spider-man franchise?

Sooner or later the X-Men movie franchise will get rebooted, so what advice would former Cyclops actor James Marsden give to the next man who fills the role, Collider, talking with Marsden while he’s promoting Sonic The Hedgehog gave some quote The biggest challenge was that, the audience and other actors never being able to see your eyes. Definitely was a handicap in bringing a persona to the character, and an energy to the character. To a character who is also very, by nature, very by-the-books. Kind of a Boy Scout, ‘do the right thing.’ He’s a foil to Wolverine’s character, who is more fly by the seat of his pants, a little more unpredictable, and aggressive.

I would just say lean into it. Own it. And carve out your own thing. The fans of the books are going to tell you ‘it needs to be this’. Find a new way to make it interesting. Because it is tough to like get something interesting and cool and different across when no one ever sees your eyes. Which is obviously, you know, the main part of the character.” unquote

DC

Well Arrow is officially done. However it kind of looks like a lot of people said goodbye earlier than others. The Ratings for the final episode are out. 723,000 tuned in to the episode, which was an almost 20 percent drop from the week before. It also wasn’t helped by the fact that it wa moved back an hour for an arrow special. Plus, who watches tv shows when they’re actually on anyway, that’s so twentieth century.

The Batman has begun principal photography and we now know what role actres Jayme Lawson is playing in the movie. Business Wire lists her as Candida Bella real. Since there is no character in known batman lore by that name, she is either a new character that plays some role in the film or that character’s name is false and she is actually playing another role. Some suggestions have been Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl.  So I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how this pans out.

We are also learning that Peter Skarsgaurd will be playing the role of Gotham City District Attorney Gil Colson, which is…you guessed it. Another name that has no known usage in the DCU. Could it be a new character or a different character, who knows.  NEXT.

On comics news, Scott Snyder has given Wonder Woman a new weapon. The writer posted on his twitter  a link to a Newsarama article showing Wonder Woman wielding a chainsaw-like device. Scott added quote It’s called the chainsaw of truth quote The weapon will show up in the sequel to Dark Knight Metal. Not much is known about the new series only that quote “the mayhem is imminent.” unquote

In John Constantine: Hellblazer number four, John Constantine gets introduced to Tommy Willowtree a street mage who’s been guarding Endland from mystickal threats since Constantine’s been away causing a new era of peace in London using white magic. Tonny is quote “a gentleman, a scholar, a clean-living, vegan acolyte of love.” unquote In other words every thind Constantine isn’t and that’s something that John can’t stand. Unfortunately, Constantine is gonna have to suck it up and team with him.

John Constantine Hellblazer number four will have new artist Matias Bergara taking over for Aaron Campbell joining writer Simon Spurrier and colorist Jordie Bellaire. It’s coming to comic stores on February twenty sixth.

Writer artist Any reeder will be bringing a new character to the DC Universe in her upcoming Amethyst series. In an interview with CBR.com She said quote “I can’t wait for everyone to meet Phoss. Creating new characters is always on my radar; it’s fun and necessary to keep things fresh. I got a chance to do this at Marvel with Moon Girl, and I’m so glad she took off the way she did. For the sake of this miniseries Phoss is tied to Gemworld only, but I would love if she really takes off into the general DCU. Is it strange that I haven’t thought about that yet?””Phoss is the first new teen friend Amy makes, a commoner from Turquoise, the warrior realm,” “She’s maybe a little too easy going, and too honest, but she’s a great foil to Princess Amethyst and keeps her grounded. Oh and no biggie, but Phoss is a lesbian animal lover with four forearms and she rides a giant caterpillar named Stan. WHATEVER. Anyway, the strength of friendship is a major element to the story, so you’ll see a lot of Phoss and that other upcoming character, Maxixe.

Amethyst is not a new character, she was created by Dan Mishkin, Gary Cohn and Earnie Colon of 1983’s Legion of SuperHeroes issue 298. Where the character otherwise known as Amy Winston discovered that she was a princess of the House of Amethyst on Gemworld. Here’s the plot quote Following her triumphant reintroduction in the pages of Young Justice, the new Amethyst miniseries follows teenager Amy Winston—a.k.a. Princess Amethyst—as she returns to her magical kingdom to celebrate her 16th birthday in style. The only problem? Her kingdom is missing, her subjects have vanished, and none in the realm of Gemworld—even her best friend, Lady Turquoise—remain loyal to her house! Alone and dejected, Amy’s forced to find new allies and confront dark secrets on an all-new quest to the farthest reaches of Gemworld. Unquote

Amethyst #1 releases Feb. 26.

Comic writer Steve Orlando is stepping out. The writer who has been working for DC Comics for the past four years is moving away from the Distinguished Competition. To a number of other publishers. To mark the end of his contract he had an interview with the Hollywood Reporter.

It’s a good interview. When asked why he signed exclusively with DC he said quote

I mean, look, I grew up as a DC guy. I was, you know, knocked over when they offered me that contract after Midnighter. And of course it’s nice to have that reliability and a home for most of your work. But I mean, you know, young Steve, who is reading DC books out of flea markets in the 1980s and early ’90s, you know, it’s a dream job. And by the way, working for DC’s still a dream job.

You know, when you’re an adult, you realize that dreams have to evolve and change. So at the time, you know, there was no way that I would stay away from that, because it’s like playing for the Yankees. (Laughs) So of course I would take it. And it’s still a company that I have, and characters that I continue to have, great affection for.

I’m excited to continue on Wonder Woman for that reason. These are icons, and to be asked to become a lasting part of those things, you know, it’s an honor, it’s a huge responsibility, and there’s just no way I wouldn’t do that. Unquote

In other words, he’s not leaving DC completely, he’s just going to be a free agent.

He also announced that he will be working with TKO, Studio Arancia and for his prose work with Fuse Literary.

Birds of Prey is flying in a little lower than expected in its opening weekend. The movie only debuted to a Friday box office of 33 to 35 million. Warner bros had been aiming for a 45 to 50 million dollar opening. There could be several factors for this including its r rating causing the younger kids from seeing the movie, it’s february opening date or something else. However, it’s ratings and reviews can’t be blamed as it’s gotten largely positive.

BOX OFFICE REPORT

Could a new Green Hornet movie be in the offing?  The Green Hornet movie rights have been acquired by Amasia Entertainment a company run by former Marvel Studios President Michael Helfant and Bradley Gallo. In a statement Helfant said quote “This is one of the only stand-alone classic superhero franchises,” “We’re a bunch of fan geeks at Amasia and are thrilled about creating something fresh and truly worthy of this legacy property. A new world that is relevant and thrilling, while respecting and honoring the original vision.”“When I was a kid, The Green Hornet was one of my favorite television series,” he added. “I loved everything about it: the Green Hornet, Kato, and of course, the Black Beauty. They were the coolest! It was personally painful to leave them all behind when I left Dimension. So I tried to option the property again at Marvel before it went over to Sony, and then again in 2017 before the rights landed at Paramount.” unquote The rights have been bouncing from studio to studio for years now. The last time it was made into anything was 2011’s The Green Hornet starring Seth rogen, which did poorly.

Speaking of projects that might come again. The Crow is back in active development. According to Bloody Disgusting.com, Davis Films, Highland Film Group and Electric Shadow’s planned reboot of The Crow might be moving forward after nearly eighteen months of no movement. The reboot had originally been planned for release in October of last year, but development fell apart in Summer of 2018 when star Jason Mamoa and director Corin Hardy left the project causing Sony Pictures to pull it. So far no new director or actor has surfaced.

Ron Howard has given an update on Disney Plus’ Willow series. Ron talked to Variety about the project, quote “We’re working on it, it’s not greenlit, but I was just on the phone today discussing it with Jonathan who has written the scripts,” “It’s in serious development, but there’s nothing to announce quite yet.” unquote Ron also confirmed that talks are ongoing for Willow star warwick davis to return. Saying quote “If it happens, Warwick will definitely be a part of it,”

Disney Pixar’s new movie Onward has a lawsuit on its hands. The Hollywood reporter reports that artist Sweet Cecily Daniher is suing Onward producer Kori Rae over the design on the van driven by the movie’s main characters.  Her design called Vanicorn shows a white unicorn in front of a blue and purple sky with bolts of lightning extending behind it. In the movie the characters van shows a white Pegasus in front of a blue and purple sky with lightning bolts in the background.

According to Daniher, Disney contacted her to use Vanicorn as a showpiece for a festival . Not long after, she noticed the similarity and pointed it out online.

Onward producer Kori Rae apologized for not making her aware there were plans to use the Vanicorn design in the movie because, at the time of the festival, the movie didn’t have a title and without a title Disney couldn’t have Daniher sign a non disclosure agreement.

Ms. Daniher is now suing Disney for Copyright infringement as well as violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the visual Artists rights act and the California Artists Protection Act. Onward hits theaters on March sixth.

The fortieth Golden Raspberry Awards aka The Razzie nominations have been announced and Cats ran away with it like well a cat from a dog. Cats got nominations for worst picture, director, actress, supporting actor for James Corden, Supporting actress for Dame Judi Dench and Rebel Wilson, Worst Screen Combo for any two characters in Cats and Jason Derulo and his CGI neutered bulge, and  screenplay. Hellboy received 5 nods including worst director, actor for David Harbour, worst prequel, remake, rip off or sequel, screenplay and reckless disregard for Human Life and Public Property. Dark Phoenix received two nominations worst prequel remake, rip off or sequel and worst supporting actor for Jessica Chastain. But it’s not all thumbs in the eyes, They also give out The razzie Redeemer Award for those who have come back from bad. This year’s nominations are Jennifer Lopez for Hustlers, Eddie Murphy for Dolemite IS my Name, Keanu Reeves for John Wick 3 and Toy Story 4, Adam Sandler for Uncut Gems and Will Smith for Aladdin. But we do know who won the Oscars

Parasite walked away with four sucking the awards away from the front runner Joker, It won best director for Bong Joon Ho, Best original screenplay for Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won and both best picture and best international picture. Marking the first time a forign film won the best picture award.

Joaquin Phoenix won best actor for Joker, Taika Waititi won best adapted screenplay for Jojo Rabbit. Toy Story 4 won for best animated feature film. And I was hoping randy Newman or John Williams would have won this catergory but Best Original score went to Joker’s Hildur Guðnadóttir (pronounced Hill-dur Guth-nah-door-tier).  If I pronounced that right, please donate a dollar. Thank you.

Archie Comics Editor in Chief Victor Gorelick has passed away.  An announcement was made on the Archie Comic twitter account this past Saturday.Quote  “We are extremely heartbroken and devastated to inform the Archie family of the passing of Archie Comics icon and Editor in Chief, Victor Gorelick, who made Riverdale his home for over sixty years,” the statement read. “No person embodied the Archie spirit more than Victor, who was a leader, friend, and mentor to everyone that walked through the doors of Archie. A lifelong friend and mentor to Archie Comics Co-CEO, Jon Goldwater – and an inspiration to the entire Archie Comics family – Victor will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Kathie, his family, his friends, and his many fans.” Gorelick first joined Archie Comics when he was 16 as an art assistant over the years he picked up skills and moved up the ladder until he was named editor in chief in 2007. Show Notes: Episode 60: What Comes After Picard & Episode 61: Howard the Duck Gets No Respect

Tonight! Picard comes back big,Obi-Wan goes back to the hanger and the Peacock is coming. All this and more on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Hello and welcome to episode 60 of Multiverse Tonight!

Have you seen Star Trek Picard. Here’s a non spoiler review. It felt well put together, a lot of what I thought happened. Especially in regards to Data. One of the few gripes I have was the theme music was…well…let me just put it this way. I don’t think anyone is going to be humming this tune. But I’m very interested to see where the show goes, I hear that the first three episodes act as the pilot episode in whole.

Star Trek

We start  Star Trek news with Picard’s Jeri Ryan, the actress talked with GamesRadar about how Seven of Nine has changed since the last we saw of her and what she thinks of Picard quote “I wouldn’t say there’s a huge affinity because Seven’s gotten pretty jaded over the last 20 years,” “She’s seen a lot of bad stuff, and she’s very much hardened from when we saw her 20 years ago. The universe has kind of gone to hell in a handbasket and she holds Starfleet and the Federation in a large part responsible for that. Initially, I think she sort of sees Picard as a representative of that, so she’s not in ‘idol worship/he’s a hero’ mode when we first meet her. I think that makes it more interesting.”

GamesRadar also spoke with the other major Borg character on the Picard Show,  Jonathan Del Arco. He told them Quote “In the story you’ll see it’s a very logical conclusion to where Hugh ends up,” But what I didn’t know were the circumstances of the world or how that affected how he ended up. He’s changed so much physically, and emotionally, and grown up like other people grow up. How many people do you know from high school who are the same in their forties and 50s? Not many. But I wanted for the audience to have a thread because he was beloved as who he was.” Unquote

The also asked what he thinks his character has been doing since we last saw him in Descent parts one and two? quote  “There’s lots of novels about what happened to the Borg and possible stories that could have developed,” “So [creating Hugh’s backstory] was a combination of talking to producers that had deep knowledge on the canon, but also some of my own imagination, because you know when you’re an actor you don’t have to tell anybody how you got there – you could make up anything you want in your head!” unquote I’m looking forward to seeing who their stories unfold in this season.

Patrick Stewart’s been on a press blitz promoting Picard and one stop was The Graham Norton Show ,while there he told the story about the time he was caught by a room service waiter, watching himself in an episode of The Next Generation. Quote “I don’t look for it, but occasionally I’ll happen upon it,” “There was one night in a hotel when I was flicking through the channels and there was an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, so I watched it for a few minutes, and I got hooked.

“Then the waiter came in with my room service order and he looked at me, then looked at the television and I thought, ‘He is going to go away and tell the entire kitchen that it was the saddest thing he had ever seen – this guy upstairs alone, having room service and watching himself’.” unquote Well Patrick, if you don’t watch yourself who will?

And we will be seeing much more of Sir Patrick and Star Trek Picard as the series has already earned  a renewal for Season two, but this time it’ll be with a new showrunner, Terry Matalas will be taking up the reins for the next season, Mr. Matalas previously was the showrunner for Syfy’s 12 Monkeys, but he’s not new to Trek having worked as a production assistant for Voyager and enterprise.

Show writer Michael Chabon sat down for an interview with Rolling Stone,in the interview he laid down his Trek Bona Fides. Such as how he and his wife both got into the next Generation. He also talked about a dinner he had with Rick Berman quote I had dinner with [Next Generation showrunner] Rick Berman a few weeks ago. I said something like, “Oh, it was so remarkable that they cast such a great actor, and someone who was so well-known on the England stage.” He said, “You have to remember, when we started that show, we actually cast two really well-known, talented actors: LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, who had been in Stand By Me.” That was the casting coup of The Next Generation in the beginning. It was viewed as: They got LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, who was this hot, young actor. Patrick Stewart was so unknown at that time, he wasn’t viewed as a coup in the sense that he was, say, when they cast him to play Professor X. unquote He also discussed about what it’s like writing for the Next Generation characters. And how it was to write for an older Picard quote It’s incredible, the things he does over the course of the season. Because it’s not just him playing the Picard that you know when you think of Picard. He’s playing Picard who’s decades older, has been through a lot, has aged physically, is looking at his life in the way that someone who’s middle-aged wouldn’t. In canon in our story, Picard is I believe 92. So he’s older than Patrick is, but someone who’s been alive that long, looking at his life, is going to be behaving very differently than someone who’s however old Patrick was when he started doing TNG. Patrick had all of that. He presents the character of Picard very much as the same guy. And yet, he’s changed, inevitably. He’s older, he’s wiser, he’s sadder, he has more regrets and more to regret. All of that just emerged on day one of shooting. Unquote It’s a very long interview, I’ll have a link to it in the show notes. https://www.rollingstone.com/tv/tv-features/star-trek-picard-michael-chabon-interview-937028/

One of the best parts of the series premiere of Picard was Jean-Luc’s dog Number One. I have a feeling we won’t see much of him until the end of the season, since I’m sure Picard is going on the road in the next episoe or two. On the Picard after show The ready room with host Wil Wheaton,  Showrunner and Executive Producer Michael Chabon talked about how they came to give the Bulldog his name. Quote “Pretty early on,” “As soon as the first draft was getting written I think it appeared at that point. It’s meant to be…it’s an Easter egg, and it’s cute and charming, but there’s something also kind of poignant about it, to me at least. He doesn’t have a Number 1, those days are behind him. Riker’s long gone in his life and there’s almost something sort of touching that he’s trying to recreate in the form of a dog, which is not a bad thing to try to do. (It’s) So much that he’s lost, so much that he’s left behind.” unquote

We might have a special guest star already lined up for Picard season 2. While appearing on The View to promote the show, Sir Patrick said this to host Whoppi Goldburg quote “Something that I need to bring up. I’m here with a formal invitation – and it’s for you, Whoopi. Alex Kurtzman, who is the senior executive producer of ‘Star Trek: Picard’, and all of his colleagues (of which I am one), want to invite you into the second season.” unquote The crowd applauded and Whoppi responded with a big quote “Yes!” quote https://twitter.com/TheView/status/1220028276879568897?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1220028276879568897&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fcomicbook.com%2Fstartrek%2F2020%2F01%2F22%2Fstar-trek-patrick-stewart-invites-whoopi-goldberg-picard-season-2-guinan%2F

It’ll be good to see Gunian back in Picard’s life.

CBS’s day at the Winter 2020 TV Critics Association Press Tour gave us some jaw dropping news nuggets, specifically that there are two more live action projects in the pipeline. Now of course, there is nothing to indicate what these two projects are, though speculation seems to hover around a StarFleet Academy series and a Pike’s Enterprise show bringing back Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn for the further adventures of the characters .

These two new shows would be in addition to the Section 31 show, which is still in active development.

So where are the Discovery season 3 and the animated Lower Decks? TrekCore got to ask producer Heather Kadin about the shows and she revealed that both should be ready to go by May. As to which one goes first, that’s up to the All Access execs. And Might I suggest to these execs, if they wanna keep me paying for all access after picard is over, you might wanna put out Lower Decks. Just saying.

Well if looks like the Kelvin timeline just might be dead. As Director Noah Hawley has told The Hollywood reporter that his project will be an original story with a new cast. Quote“To call it Star Trek IV [the placeholder the trades have been using] is kind of a misnomer. I have my own take on the franchise as a lifelong fan.”

“Yeah, I think so. Yeah. It’s early days. I don’t know. But new characters often involve new cast.”  As an example of what he plans to do he told them quote It’s William Shatner putting on his reading glasses and lowering Khan’s shields, which cost like $9.50. There’s no big action sequence. He’s just more clever, there’s something really uplifting about that feeling. I went to Paramount and just had my own ideas for what I wanted to do with it. So that’s the direction that I’m going in. It’s still very early days, so I can’t really be more specific. But it’s going to be different. Unquote

In a different interview with Deadline he said quote “I have my own story and want to make sure as I did with Fargo and Legion that I’m respectful to the underlying material. That I’m not unintentionally changing things that people love or feel passionate about. So, it’s important to do that research as I go.” unquote

So it sounds like we’re actually gonna see something original on the big screen. No rehashes of old episodes, we’re gonna leave the Enterprise crew behind and tell a story that’s just set in the Star Trek Universe.  Good idea. Especially now that it seems that the Tarantino movie is still up in the air.

I guess we’ll just have to watch and see.

Deep Space Nine is getting some comics love. IDW has announced that a new Star Trek Deep Space Nine miniseries called Too Long a Sacrifice will be out in April.  The series is being written by David and Scott Tipton and will have artwork by Greg Scott. It’s being described as a noir thriller centering around Odo. David Tipton said in a press release quote “Set during the most difficult hours of the Dominion War, Too Long a Sacrifice shows the station during trying times: a series of mysterious and seemingly unsolvable terrorist attacks just as the war has everyone strained to the breaking point,” “We’ll get to see the darker side of life on the station as Odo leads the investigation, with increasingly desperate conditions forcing him and others to deal with new and unexpected allies and to use unusual tactics in their efforts to stop the attacks.” unquote  Scott Tipton added quote “We’re so excited to return to the world of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. With its ‘frontier setting’ and precarious place in the galaxy, Deep Space Nine offers the opportunity to tell truly unique tales of intrigue and suspense. Combine that with one of the best character ensembles ever assembled, and you get something no other Star Trek series can offer.” unquote

Star Trek Deep Space nine Too Long a Sacrifice number one will be available with various covers including Ricardo Drumond and JK Woodward as well as a photo variant. Look for it in April.

Looks like we’re one step closer to the Star Trek biobed. Nanox, a company out of Israel has created a medical machine called the Nanox Arc. It resembles the Star Trek biobed and promises to make medical scanning available to people around the world at a significantly lower cost. Instead of a huge CT machine, The acr is a portable bed. Ran Poliakine, founder and CEO of Nanox told Digital Trends quote “Nanox has achieved the world’s first commercial-grade digital X-ray source, without the use of heat,” “This X-ray device enables pulsating electron beams, versus the continuous radiation of X-rays used today. Building a silicon-based ‘electron nano gun’, placed on a silicon chip, has made Nanox’s method more efficient than the traditional way of heat-based filaments.” unquote

Basically since the device doesn’t need to produce heat, the device can be made seventy to ninety percent smaller, reducing the cost. Nanox believes that this could make medical imaging more accessible to people around the world.

As to its resemblance to the Star Trek biobed, it’s not a coincidence Polkaine told digital trends quote “The Starfleet’s unsung hero allowed doctors to assess and diagnose their patients in minutes, and allowed them to conduct any medical imaging scan necessary, efficiently,” “The biobed served multiple purposes, and that is exactly what we are aiming to achieve. We want the Arc to be accessible, portable, easy to operate and focus on what’s important: the patient.” unquote

Star Wars

Rumors of the Obi Wan series demise are a bit premature.  Apparently on the January seventeenth rumors started being spread about that the plug had been pulled on the Ewan McGregor led Disney Plus series. Reports appear to have traced this rumor back to a parody Twitter account. Comic Book dot com reports that sources close to the production say that it has not been cancelled. But is going back to the drawing board. Unknown Sources have told the Hollywood reporter that the story has been scrapped and a new writer is being sought to write the series. The source also indicated that it might go from a six part series to a four part series. Star Ewan McGregor told  IGN that filming would shift to next year quote “It’s just slid to next year, that’s all. The scripts were really good,” “Now that Episode IX came out and everyone at Lucasfilm has got more time to spend on the writing, they felt they wanted more time to write the episodes.” unquote I’m guessing that the Star Wars franchise will continue being more of a tv franchise for the near future. Probably just putting out a new movie project every couple of years.

The Rise of Skywalker has finally passed the one billion dollar mark, twenty eight days after being released in theaters. This was slower than Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, which took 12 and 19 days respectively. Now while this shows a trend, I don’t think the Walt Disney company is worried, after all the only Star Wars film that really didn’t do as expected was Solo.

Let’s take a quick look at the box office for this past weekend. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2020W04/?ref_=bo_wey_table_1

Composer extraordinaire John Williams walked away from the Grammys with his twenty fifth career Grammy Award Victory. Mister Williams won the Best Instrumental Composition Grammy for the Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge Symphonic Suite, that he created for the theme park. I’d like to offer him my congratulations, if he’d like to write me a theme song, …

Taika Waititi is a busy man, lots of plates to spin, he acts and he directs including in The mandalorian. So naturally rumors would get started that he might be working on a Star Wars movie. Taika’s response to these Rumors? On twitter he put up the cover of Fleetwood Mac’s album, also called Rumors. Funny.  Well I guess we can never actually say never, one day he might have some free time and I’m sure lucasfilm would love to have him do some work.

Hulu’s Senior VP of originals speaking at the Winter Television Critics Association press tour spoke about The Orville’s upcoming third season quote “The Orville has a very loyal following on Hulu so when there was an opportunity to bring a new season to our viewers we jumped at it, I will see the first episode next week. We’ll monitor and evaluate the show as it goes, unquote So that sounds like Orville fans need to have a strong showing to make sure we get a season four. Now if they’d just tell us WHEN to show up…

Could the Merovingian be returning to the Matrix? French website AlloCine reports that actor Lambert Wilson, who appeared in the matrix reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions as the plot advancing program is currently in negotiations to return to the fourth Matrix movie. If he does return he would just stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie Ann Moss as well as newcomers Yahya Abdul Mateen II, Jessica Henick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris,Eréndira Ibarra, Max Riemelt, and Toby Onwumere. Production on the movie is scheduled to start next month in Chicago and would be released May twenty first of 2021.

The new branch of the United States Military the US. Space Force revealed it’s uniforms on it’s official twitter and it’s got fans scratching it’s head. There are the normal things like the flag, the patch for the service and stuff like that. The confusing thing is that they decided to use woodland camouflage for the uniform. Is the Force planning on invading Endor? Wouldn’t Blue or Black make more sense? Let’s just hope this is a temporary choice.

It looks like we are getting a third National Treasure movie from Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer. The script will be written by Bad Boys for Life screenwriter Chris Bremner, who also will be writing the fourth Bad Boys movie.

National Treasure is a couple of movies starring Nicolas Cage as Treasure hunter, Benjamin Franklin Gates, the first one came out in 2004 and the sequel came out in 2007. No word on when their looking at putting out the third one.

NBC Universal has released details on it’s Peacock streaming service. First off Comcast‘s Xfinity x1 and Flex video platforms will get it on April fifteenth, it will than come out nationally on July fifteenth. There will be three different versions quote A free, ad-supported one; a more robust, ad-supported one that will be free to Comcast and Cox Cable subscribers, and $5 for everyone else; and an offering with no ads that is $5 for Comcast and Cox subscribers and $10 for everyone else. Unquote Free will have quote “next-day access to current seasons of freshman broadcast series, a range of film and TV titles but only select episodes of marquee Peacock originals and tentpole series. It will also feature curated Peacock streaming genre channels like SNL Vault, Family Movie Night and Olympic Profiles.” unquote The Paid version will have everything free has plus quote “adds full-season Peacock originals and tentpole series and next-day access to current seasons of returning broadcast shows. It also throws in early access to late night titles like the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and sports attractions like exclusive Premiere League soccer matches, Olympic programming” unquote  The service will have about 600 movies and 400 series I don’t know, I think I’ll just stick with the free version.

The mouse kills the fox, the mouse mills the fox, high ho the derry o the mouse kills the fox. In a step meant to symbolize Disney’s take over of the 20th century fox studio. You will no longer see films from 20th Century Fox or Fox searchlight Pictures. Instead it’ll be 20th century studios and Searchlight Pictures. The tv side is currently unchanged, but it’s expected that a renaming will occur soon. The logos will be the same, just without the word Fox.

Finally we remember The son of author JRR Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien. Christopher was born in November of 1924 and assisted his father with his work on the lord of the rings, he even edited the companion book The Silmarillion after his father died in 1973.

He would go on to edit dozens of other books by his father and Geoffrey Chaucer. He also wrote a book of his own called The Battle of the Goths and The Huns. He served as chairman of the Tolkien Estate Ltd until 2017. He was critical of The Lord of the Rings movies saying quote “They gutted the book, making an action film for 15 to 25-year-olds.”

He spent the rest of his life in France where he passed away at the age of 95 on January sixteenth, 2020.  He is survived by his second wife, their two children and a son from his first marriage.

EPISODE 61

Tonight! MODOK goes on but Howard The Duck does not, Joker, Joker, Joker and we remember a legendary Python and much more on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Greetings and welcome to the comics edition of Multiverse Tonight.  Episode 61. And I thank you for being here. You might not know it, but you help keep me busy, which helps keep me sane. I like others suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder during the winter and keeping busy helps to keep the depressive feelings at bay. Thank you, could you do me a favor though? Could you recommend Multiverse Tonight to a friend for me? You don’t have to shout it from the mountain tops, just one friend, someone who you think will like geeky news, presented plain and simple. Thank you, now let’s go on to the news.

Marvel

Chris Hemsworth is teaming up with the National Geographic Channel for a new series called Limitless. The series was announced at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. The series is about superhuman feats. The science series looks at groundbreaking biotech and other ways we can unlock the body’s secret superpowers for a longer better life. Chris Hemsworth said  Quote “Basically, I was somehow convinced to volunteer myself as a human guinea pig and endure a series of mental and physical challenges across the globe, all for the sake of science,” Hemsworth explained. “We’re hoping to shed some light on new ideas and emerging science with the focus on extending a healthy life span. Production starts soon, so wish me luck.” unquote No word on when this will air.

Marvel has a new X-Men comic coming this April. Children of the Atom will be a new ongoing series. Writer Vita Ayala and artist Bernard Chang bring us this new team book with a new squad of super heroes that will turn the X-Men’s World upside down. No details about the cast of the book have been announced yet.

M.O.D.O.K. has a cast. The new Hulu animated series will star Patton Oswalt in the lead role as the (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing) who has been ousted from both his evil organization and his family, plus he’s suffering from a midlife crisis. Joining Patton will be Aimee Garcia as Jodie, MODOK’s wife and the mother of his children, Ben Schwartz as lou, MODOK’s twelve year old son, Melissa Fumero as Melissa, MODOK’S seventeen year old daughter, Wendi McLendon-Covey from The Goldbergs will be Monica, a mad scientist at AIM and Modoks rival, Beck Bennet as Austin Van Der Sleet, MODOKS new boss. Jon Daly as Super Adaptoid, A snarky android with ambitions to live, feel and create, but is instead forced to spend his days massaging the hoverchair sores on his creator M.O.D.O.K.’s scalp and Sam Richardson as Gary, a henchman at AIM who is fiercely loyal to MODOK even if MODOK struggles to remember his name.

Executive Producer Jordan Blum said about this cast in the press release quote “I’m blown away by our insanely talented and hilarious voice cast, who have all brought their specific kind of magic to this weird and wonderful corner of the Marvel Universe.” unquote

Howard the Duck is dead. Not the character, but the show. This seems to be part of a house cleaning at Marvel Television as it transitions from Jeph Loeb to Kevin Feige. Howard the Duck joins Tigra & Dazzler on the death pile. The other two shows in the HULU and Marvel animated line up MODOK and Hit Monkey are still in the works, no word on what will happen to The Offenders crossover, but it’s probably gone too.  Marvel and HULU declined comment. I’d feel sorry for Kevin Smith losing Howard the Duck, but he still has plenty of other irons in the fire, so he has plenty of future endeavors.

Marvels Iron Man VR game has been delayed a few months from February to May. The game’s developer Camouflaj revealed the delay in a tweet. Quote In order to deliver on our vision and meet the high expectations of our amazing community, we’ve made the difficult decision to move Marvel’s Iron Man VR to a May 15, 2020 release. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding. You’ll be hearing from us again soon! Unquote

The PS4 exclusive game was revealed last March and will put the player inside Tony’s helmet via the players VR headset and will see Tony’s past as an arms dealer come back to haunt him in the form of Ghost from Ant-man & The Wasp.

Now for some quick hits.

The Falcon & The Winter Soldier has added actor Noah Mills to the cast, Noah is known for roles in NBC’s The Enemy Within and The Brave. The series will premiere on Disney Plus in August.

Disney has officially started work on Captain Marvel 2. According to the Hollywood reporter , the studio has almost locked down Megan McDonnal , a staff writer on WandaVision for the much anticipated sequel. But t is supposed to take place in present day No release date or subtitle has been given for the movie. You’ll remember the first Captain Marvel made 1.13 billion dollars world wide.

Speaking of Marvel projects in the pipeline. Marvel’s Disney Plus She Hulk series will start filming this July in Atlanta according to a production notice

DC

We begin DC News with Joker.

Joker got huge nominations from the Oscars. Getting nominations for actor in a leading role for Joaquin Phoenix, achievement in cinematography, costume design, directing for Todd Phillips, film editing for Jeff Groth, Makeup and Hairstyling for Nicki Leadermann and Kay Georgiou, original score for Hildur Guonadottir, best film, sound editing for Alan Robert Murray, sound mixing and screenplay. There were other geeky nominations, but I’ll highlight those in the geek news.

Now an interesting fact as emerged. Joker editor Jeff Groth revealed to Collider that Bradley Cooper had a hand in editing the film. quote”We kept this one pretty close to us. We screened it more personally for people and filmmakers,”. “Bradley Cooper definitely came in a couple of times. He was a producer on the movie, but he definitely watched the movie many times and sat with us. We could call him if we got stuck with something and be like, ‘Hey, can you come over and take a look at things?’” unquote If Jeff wins, I think he owes Bradley big, don’t you?

Speaking of the Joker, 2020 marks his 80th anniversary. The character, debuted in 1940’s Batman number one. To celebrate, DC is putting out The Joker 80th anniversary 100 page super spectacular in April. The comic will feature a number of original stories from Denny O’Neil, Scott Snyder, Paul Dini, Lee Bermejo, Jock, Mikel Janin and current Batman series writer James Tynion IV, all with a cover from former Batman and Metal artist Greg Capullo. The release will also have variant covers showcasing the Joker’s look from each decade. It’ll be out on April 29th for $9.99.

There will be more than one. HBO Max’s Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey revealed at the tca press tour that quote “Greg [Berlanti] said that I can share a few little tidbits about Green Lantern. We’re in the early stages of talking to him about it, but he did say that the series, so far, will span several decades and focus on the origin story of two major Green Lanterns from Earth, while going into the story in space and Green Lantern favorite character Sinestro.” unquote  As to what green lanterns those will be is unknown right now. Just don’t make the suit animated. Simpler is better.

Karen Gillian would love to do a DC movie. While the actress was promoting Jumani The Next Level in Brazil, Karen was asked if she had her pick what comic book character would she like to be involved with next/ quote Batgirl would be cool for that, as well. My favorite film in that world, my favorite one is The Dark Knight. I just love the way that one is directed so much. So, I would just love to work in that world, as a director. Come on, DC. Look over this way.” unquote

The lack of Joker in the new Birds of Prey movie was a choice according to star and producer Margot Robbie. The actress told comic book dot com at a press event quote “It was either going to be a complete Harley and Joker story or Joker has got to be out of the picture,” “I really wanted to see Harley in a girl gang and I felt there was a huge gap in the market for a girl gang ensemble action film. I felt like no one was doing that and I couldn’t understand why, especially a comic book movie.” “From the very beginning it was a conscious choice of they have to be broken up at this stage,” “I have a whole backstory in my head [of] what’s happened between what you saw at the end of Suicide Squad and what you see at the beginning of Birds of Prey.”

Birds of Prey and the fantabulous emancipation of one Harley Quinn come to theaters on February seventh.

Tonight! Everyone has an opinion of The Rise of Skywalker, William Shatner does a good dead and Seth MacFarlane goes to the birds on the scifi edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Hello and welcome to episode 58 of Multiverse Tonight.

Finally saw the Rise of Skywalker last night, so here’s my review. It’s very very very good. It’s not the worse, it’s not the best. Just very very very good. I was very happy with how they wrapped up the Skywalker Saga. There are, of course, a fair amount of plot holes that every Star Wars film has had. But if there weren’t than it wouldn’t be a Star wars movie. All those movies have plot holes. No matter who made them.  Anyway…

Star Wars

In episode two of The Mandalorian, the hero finds himself at the mercy of Jawas who have destroyed his vessel, in order to get his ship parts back, he must make a deal with them to bring the egg of a Mudhorn back to the Jawas. The Mudchorn resembles a modern rhino, but it looks like it might be based on something even older. A fan on the Nature is Metal subreddit, noted that it actually seemed to be inspired by an ancestor of the rhino, the Elasmotherium also called the Siberian unicorn. The creature existed between 2.6 million and 29,000 years ago. The remains of the beast have been found across Eastern Europe and all the way down to China with a large concentration in Kazakhstan.

Season two of The Mandalorian has been confirmed with new episodes in the works for fall of this year.

So you want more of The Child aka Baby Yoda. How bout some coloring? Vulture has partnered with illustrator Martin Gee to create a six scene coloring book that you can download https://www.vulture.com/2020/01/baby-yoda-coloring-book.html?utm_source=tw&utm_campaign=nym&utm_medium=s1

From Vulture dot com, we will have a link to it in our show notes.

Speaking of Baby Yoda. We know that’s not his name, but neither is The Child. Director and actor taika Waititi speaking with the New York Times at the Golden Globe Awards confirmed that he has a name, but he isn’t saying what it is. He said quote “He’s not named Baby Yoda!”. There is a name yet to be revealed, and Taika knows it but won’t hint. “I’ll wait for Favreau to give that away.”

So balls in your court Favreau, the longer you hold on to this secret the more the name “Baby Yoda” will stick.

Well I guess while we wait for that, we have the seventh and last season of The Clone Wars. The series will be debuting on Disney plus on February seventeenth. The series first debuted on Cartoon Network back in 2008.

The reviews of The Rise of Skywalker have been mixed, it’s Rotten Tomatoes score is 54 percent and it dropped nearly 60 percent from week one to week two. Former Disney CEO Michael Eisner gave his opinion of the film on Twitter saying quote #RiseofSkywalker is an acceptable film, a lot of story and fan delights but somewhat emotionless, while #TheMandolorian on @disneyplus establishes show creator @Jon_Favreau as the new George Lucas which @RobertIger had the foresight to declare. “Daisy Ridley played Rey throughout the film with one expression: awe/fear until the very end of the film when she reveals her name,” “That’s what I meant by a film that somewhat lacked emotion.

“In my previous comment I didn’t mean to suggest that #DaisyRidley acted poorly,” “On the contrary, she was excellent. The choice of attitude for Rey was intended and seems to fall on the philosophy of the character.” unquote Well, to each their own. Maybe they’ll put out a director’s cut?

Actor Dominic Monaghan thinks that a director’s cut of The rise of Skywalker would be a good idea. Talking with the Hollywood Reporter he said quote “Like a lot of Star Wars fans, I’m hoping there will be a director’s cut so we’ll get to see more and more of the stuff that was filmed,” “I wasn’t there all the time, but even in the short time that I was there, there was so much stuff filmed that didn’t make it to the theatrical version…. Oh, man, there was so much stuff!” Monaghan even alluded to a cutscene that involved his character that found its way to the cutting room floor. “Another thing that we will hopefully see at some point in the future is that in the final battle, Connix injures her leg,” “Obviously, myself, Rose and Connix are exiting the battle, and Rose has a weapon. While Rose is busy doing stuff, I grab Connix’s arm and put it over my shoulder to make sure that all of us come back as unscathed as possible.” unquote there is a lot more to his interview at the hollywood reporter I’ll include a link in the show notes.https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/star-wars-dominic-monaghan-wants-rise-skywalker-director-s-cut-1266205

So before we go on Let’s take a look at this past weekends box office.

Star Trek

Well now that the Skywalker Saga is over what could Daisy Ridley and Jon Boyega  to do…..maybe another sci fi franchise? The two spoke with Yahoo! And they were asked if the might be willing to join the Star Trek franchise. Daisy Ridley replied quote”I would do a Star Trek,” “I need a job. I’m unemployed, hello!” John Boyega had a different reaction quote “They’re talking too much, the last Star Trek was. Space Law & Order.” uquote  Yahoo did ask Oscar Issac the same question at a different interview and he told them that he would be open to the opportunity because he was a quote space slut unquote just like director JJ Abrams.

William Shatner did a good deed over Christmas. TMZ reports that the actor visited his local Los Angeles Police Department precinct station with corned beef and pastrami sandwiches, bagels, lox, and cream cheese to help feed the officers on duty on Christmas Day. Shater than reportedly thanked them, left a holiday card and a few hundred dollars to feed the officers for the rest of the day. Good Job TJ Hooker.

So, you may remember that the US now has a new military division, THE US Space Force. Well now word has come out that the 14th unit of the Air Force is being transferred to the Space Force and is being renamed Space Operations Command. It’s acronym will be SPOC or as some are referring to it  “Spock”

According to a press release from the Air Force, quote “The SPOC provides space capabilities such as space domain awareness, space electronic warfare, satellite communications, missile warning, nuclear detonation detection, environmental monitoring, military intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance, navigation warfare, command and control, and positioning, navigation and timing, on behalf of the USSF for USSPACECOM and other combatant commands.” unquote .

It’s now official. Star Trek Picard has been renewed for season two. The announcement was made by Julie Mcnamara Executive Vic President of Original Content for CBS All Access at the biannual TCA presentation. Julie told the audience quote “The energy and excitement around the premiere of Star Trek: Picard has reached a magnitude greater than all of us at CBS All Access could have hoped for,” “We’re thrilled to announce plans for a second season before the series’ debut, and we are confident that ‘Star Trek’ fans and new viewers alike will be captured by the stellar cast and creative team’s meticulously crafted story when it premieres on Jan. 23.”

Production has begun on Disney Plus’ Willow series. The news comes from writer Jon Kasdan’s twitter feed. The series is a followup to the 1988 movie directed by Ron Howard, written by George Lucas and Bob Dolman and starring Warwick Davis in the title role, Warwick will be returning to the role. A little bit of trivia for you. Jon Kasdan is the son of writer director Lawrence Kasdan, best known for his work on three Star Wars films and Raiders of the Lost Ark. No details on any additional cast or release dates.

And if you enjoyed the eighties, you’ll enjoy this next piece of news. Disney Plus is currently in plans to remake the movie Space Camp. The original told the story of a group of teens attending an astronaut training camp when they are accidentally launched into space while touring the space shuttle. The movie stared Lea Thompson, Kelly Preston and a young Joaquin Phoenix, it was not a successful movie at the box office when it was released in 1986, but that can partially be attributed to the release being a few months after the Challenger shuttle disaster.

The new Space Camp will be written by Saturday Night Live writers Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell and will be produced by John Rickard, whose credits include Rampage and Horrible Bosses.

Seth MacFarlane is switching from a Fox to a Peacock. The creator behind Family Guy, American Dad and The Orville has signed a nine figure deal with NBC Universal Content Studios. Sources have told the Hollywood reporter that Seth and Fuzzy Door Productions will create and develop new TV projects for the media giant . This deal will lock Mister MacFarlane there for five years and will see him grow 200 million dollars richer. Seth is said to be very excited to create new projects for the company and it is said he’s interested in quote starring in and producing musicals, political dramas and anthologies around historic events in addition to working on new animated projects. But don’t worry about his Fox based shows as the deal leaves MacFarlane room to continue working on his now Disney owned shows as well as giving him room to make films for other studios.  I’ll have to ask Tom Costantino about that in a future interview. Oooo. Here’s a thought. Seth Macfarlane’s Battlestar Galactica

Legendary filmmaker Robert Zemeckis is in final negotiations to direct the sci fi thriller Ares at Warner Bros. The film has an original script from Captain Marvel writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet was originally set to be made at MGM, but will not go forth at the Bugs Bunny brand. Roland Emmerich will serve as executive producer.  The story is being described as genre bending and tells the story of an astronaut who crashes in an African desert, on his journey home to reunite with his family, he discovers that his mission was part of a larger conspiracy and that he might be carrying a secret that could change the world.

While I’ve had a few days off, I’ve been rewatching season one of FX’s What we do in the shadows, very funny. Well season two looks like it’s gonna be good as series creator Jermain Clement has announced that Mark Hamill will be a guest star this season. Jermaine made the announcement at the show’s Television Critics Association press day panel. Clement also confirmed that Booksmart’s Beanie Feldstien will not be returning in season two due to film commitments. For which Jermaine said that he was quote “a little disappointing for me as she was planned to be a big character unquote. The good news is they have found other characters to fill that void. Season 2 will add new supernatural beings to the wor;d such as ghosts and witches.

Tonight! Joaquin Phoenix is tired of the same old questions, Australia’s favorite Thor chips in for his homeland and Kevin Smith gives us an update on Jay And Silent Bob Reboot on the comics edition of Multiverse Tonight

Greetings and welcome to the comics edition of Multiverse Tonight. Episode 59.

Been taking a few days off, had a consultation with a surgeon for a hemorrhoidectomy, went to see Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker. You can listen to the previous episode, I also read a couple of comics. Star Trek Discovery Aftermath number one and Undiscovered Country number one. I thought both were interesting enough to read another issue. Undiscovered Country is a unique concept. The United States mainland walls itself off from the rest of the world, now decades later, a team has to enter the reclusive nation to find a cure for a plague that’s going to cause the end of the world. Original concept. It’ll be interesting to see where this one goes.

DC

Deathstroke’s ongoing comic book series has come to an end and it actually wasn’t caused by poor sales, it was planned that way. The series written by Christopher Priest changed Slade’s role in the DC Universe and saw him battle the Teen Titans. The ending was planned by Priest and DC Co Publisher and editor Dan Didio. Priest told newsarama quote “The series is ending now because I went to DC Publisher Dan DiDio and asked him to end the series with #50. Sure, we could keep going, but that’s not how the business works. Books launch hot and then the numbers settle somewhere, with the occasional rarity of numbers going up. They usually settle in somewhere. Numbers-wise, sure, we’re not causing any problems for DC, but we’re not setting the world on fire, either, which ties up talent DC could redeploy elsewhere and get better numbers,“”I didn’t want the book to get cancelled at #56 or #62. So, I said to Dan, let’s plan it so it works into the publishing plan and budget and all of that, and we end on our own terms. I was really happy he agreed.” unquote Well better to plan your ending that to have one forced upon you.

We are just weeks away from the release of Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn and eagerly anticipate DC Black LAbel Birds of Prey one shot from Brian Azzarello and Emanuela Lupacchino has been pushed back again. The special was originally going to arrive in stores at the end of January, but now it’s not due in stores until March fourth. No cause has been given.

Going to the movie news. James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is in full production right now in Panama and during the holiday break he took time to answer some fan questions on Instagram. IN answer to the question Can we expect big elaborate sets in Suicided Squad like the prison scene in Guardians of The Galaxy, he answered back quote #TheSuicideSquad will have by far the most and the biggest practical sets of any movie I’ve ever worked on. Unquote He also talked about how much fun he’s been having making the movie and how great the crew on the movie is. The movie is due in theaters next year on August the sixth.

Joaquin Phoenix is getting tired of being asked about Joker again and again. During the Golden Globe Awards presentation, for which he won the award for Best actor in a motion picture-Drama, he turned a question about his process for getting in character back on the interviewer.  Quote “Isn’t this old news? I feel like I’ve talked about this for six months,“”I mean, I feel like I answered this questions. You wanna hear a different version of it? Should I try and change it slightly or what should I do?” unquote He then went on to answer the question. So let me break this down for those of you who want to interview stars, ask different questions, one’s that haven’t been asked. Find off kilter questions, dig into a performance that hasn’t been talked about. You’ll be surprised at the amount of appreciation you get from your subject.

The Critics choice awards were handed out over the weekend. Joker actor Joaquin Phoenix took the Best Actor award Joke also got the Best Score award, Avengers endgame took home the best visual effects award and best action movie, however it didn’t take the best Sci-fi Horror Award, which went to Us, Toy Story 4 beat our Frozen II and others to take Best Animated Feature. On the tv side, Watchmen’s regina King got best actress in a drama and Jean smart came away with Best Supportig Actress. There were plenty other winners for a list of the winners just click on the link in the show notes on teh website. Multiversetonight.com https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/12/entertainment/critics-choice-2020-winners-list/index.html

And speaking of Joker and awards, The British Academy of Film and Television Awards or BAFTA nominations are out and Joker has garnered eleven nominations including Best Film, Best Leading Actor for Joaquin Phoenix, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Score, Best Casting, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best production design, MakeUp and hair and Sound. Avengers Endgame and The Rise of Skywalker are up for Special Visual Effects and The Rise of Skywalker is also up for Sound and Original Score. Frozen 2, klaus, A Shaun the sheep movie Farmageddon and Toy Story 4 are up for animated film.  The awards will be handed out on February second at the royal albert hall in London.

The CW made it’s fall schedule planning much easier as it has renewed nearly every series. The network has renewed everything but Arrow, Supernatural and The 100, which are all ending this season. The only series that hasn’t received a formal pickup to date is the Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene, which is set to premiere next month, however it has already received it’s pickup for an additional thirteen episodes. Mark Pedowitz, who has just been promoted to Chairman and CEO of The CW said quote “These early orders for next season give our production teams a head start in plotting out story arcs and a jump on hiring staff, and this also provides us with a strong foundation of established, fan-favorite CW shows to build on for next season, “We’ve been thrilled with the creative direction of all three new series, and even though we are in the very early stages of our new full stack streaming strategy, which allows viewers to catch up on our new shows from the beginning, we’re already seeing incredibly positive results from our multiplatform viewership for Nancy Drew and Batwoman.”

However, there’s bad news if you only stream the networks programs from Netflix. The CW’s deal with the streamer has ended. Batwoman and Katy Keene will stream on HBO Max next year, Nancy Drew will be going to CBS All Access. The rest of the shows will stay at Netflix for now.

The CW is currently working on new shows for the 2020 fall season including a walker texas ranger remake, A Kung Fu reboot, a female centered Arrow spinoff, a sequel series to Dark Shadows and Superman & Lois.

Marvel

Doctor Strange 2 is directionless. Director Scott Derrick has left the project due to creative differences with the studio according to a report in Variety. The studio has confirmed his exit, he will remain as an executive producer. The movie will begin production in May and there are nor expected to be any delays in production. The search for his replacement is currently underway. It’s expected in theaters the first weekend of May 2021.

Disney Plus’ WandaVision series is coming sooner rather than later. This year. The news came in a post on Disney Plus’ twitter, during a video touting the slate of releases for this year. No word on when exactly it’s gonna be.

Australia is in bad straits right now. A big portion of the continent country is on fire right now. 16 million acres in fact.  Australian native Chirs Hemsworth and his family are donating one million dollars to Australian firefighters. He posted a video on social media quote “Hi everyone. Like you, I want to support the fight against the bushfires here in Australia,“”My family and I are contributing a million dollars. Hopefully you guys can chip in too. Every penny counts so whatever you can muster up is greatly appreciated. I’ve put together links supporting firefighters, organisations and charities who are working flat out to provide support during this devastating and challenging time. Beyond appreciative to everyone around the world for their well wishes and donations. It really does make a difference, so dig deep! Love ya.” unquote If your interested in donating yourself, Chris also provided links to various agencies that would appreciate your donations. I’ll have a link to them in the show notes. https://lnk.bio/fightthebushfires

Thor Love and thunder might be getting some help from a  former Batman.Christian Bale might be up for a role in the fourth Thor movie. No word on what role he might be up for, but it’s gonna be a substantial one, let’s keep in mind that this movie will see Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster taking up the mantle of Thor. Maybe he’ll play Beta Ray Bill? Perhaps

In comics news, Marvel’s newest superhero hails from Michigan, Dearborn to be specific. The character named Amulet was introduced via Detroit native Saladin Ahmed’s twitter account quote I am THRILLED to introduce you all to Marvel’s newest superhero, the mystical defender Amulet.🧿

He’s Arab American from Dearborn, Michigan and was created by myself and @SaraAlfageeh! http://bit.ly/34vCgZL Amulet (aka Fadi Fadlallah) will make his Marvel Universe debut in THE MAGNIFICENT MS MARVEL #13 and will figure into next year’s OUTLAWED event.

Got some big plans for this big guy! This one means a lot to me. Superhero comics helped teach me to read, but as an Arab American kid I never quite saw myself in them. To be able to add a character with a name like mine, that shares my heritage and my hometown to this pantheon…whew! For those asking, he’s Lebanese unquote

Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is doing quite well. The director and a man of many talents has revealed in a new years post that quote

Jupiter’s Legacy is in the present. Jupiter’s Requiem is in the future. Not much could be gleaned from the photo except that the series will be ten issues long and will have an opening scene that takes place 50,000 years in the past. The artist is being kept top secret. A TV adaptation of Jupiter’s Legacy is currently in production at Netflix.

Stephen Fry will be hosting a special on the BBC called Fantastic Beasts A Natural History the special will quote “origins and stories of mythical creatures and the fantastical beasts from J.K. Rowling’s stories and explore their history and connections with animals roaming the planet today.” unquote It will be created and released in a partnership with Warner Bros and London’s Natural History Museum. Stephen Fry in a statement said quote “I could not be more delighted to be a part of this magnificent opportunity for us Muggles to show the wizarding world that the fantastic beasts in our world are more than a match for theirs,” “Joining forces with the combined powers of the fabulous BBC, its legendary Natural History Unit and the magical Natural History Museum we hope to be able to bring you closer than you’ve ever been to some of the most spectacular and extraordinary creatures ever seen.” There is no official release date for the special and even the title is a work in progress. Show Notes Episode 56:Goodbye 2019 & Episode 57: Hello 2020

Tonight! It’s the end of the decade, but not the end of the news on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Hello and welcome to the SciFi edition of Multiverse Tonight. This is episode 56,

Welcome to the last episode of the year. I would add the “of the decade” line, but I haven’t been broadcasting all decade. You know, I could have just not done a new episode this week, I know lots of podcasts that take a vacation between Christmas and New Years, but that’s just not me.

I would like to thank you for listening to my words today. 2020 looks like it’s gonna be a busy year, lots of new movies, new show ideas in the offing and so forth. Who knows, maybe I’ll create a second podcast? Of course, you can always help me out by showing me some appreciation by donating money or tweeting at me etcetera. Let’s have a good 2020 and be sure to think about your decisions, weather in the voting booth or elsewhere. Let’s get it on….

Star Wars

I’m gonna admit right now, I’m not gonna have a lot of Star Wars news in this episode, you know why? Most of the news that comes out at this time is about things in and around the rise of skywalker. Which I haven’t seen , so I’m kinda avoiding spoilers right now. I will be seeing it, just not till after the first of the year.  But there are a few news items….

\

To start off, Since it’s new years, you’ll want to drink to the new year, how bout a new cocktail from The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal. The actor shared a picture of a green cocktail with two lime wedges for ears and what looks like prunes for eyes on Instagram with the captain quote To getting through the holidays with a little bit of force. Good luck, everyone.” unquote What his cocktail was made from is anyone’s guess. There are probably dozens of permutations of a Baby Yoda cocktail on the internet. One version served at the Golden Tiki  bar in Las Vegas according to the las vegas review journal has Rhum agricole, demerara syrup and fresh lime juice, finished with a spritz of absinthe andLuxardo cherry eyes and lime wedge ears. His sense of style is provided by his bar napkin Jedi robe, tied with a piece of twine, and a bar-straw lightsaber . So if you wanna try one, I guess you should fly to vegas, or figure it out yourself. Drink at your own risk, it could be evil….

And speaking of The Child, I bet you think the lack of merchandise is particularly evil, Well blame Donald Glover for the lack of merchandise for Baby Yoda.

The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau says that  a conversation with Donald about Beyonce during the Lion King remake convinced the director to be more reserved. Speaking with the Hollywood Reporter”We were talking about music and pop culture and he was saying that what people really like now is to be surprised, because it doesn’t happen that much,” “When Beyoncé did an album, she would just put it online and everybody would react to it. Just putting it out there spurred a conversation that would become more viral and bring more genuine attention than any marketing.” quote Disney is now going full speed ahead with merchandise for the character named The Child including dolls, Funko pops and shirts. However the slowness to get on the sales wagon might have cost Disney around three million or about how much they made in a couple of hours of showings of The Rise of Skywalker.

By the way, preorders for the Blu ray of The Rise of Skywalker are available now. Including a 4k ultra hd blu ray set of the entire nine film saga on 27 disks that retails for two hundred forty nine dollars. No release date has been officially announced but it’s guesstimated to come around the end of March.

If you noticed that Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose Tico was barely in the Rise of Skywalker, don’t believe the haters that it was because her character was disliked. Instead it was just a matter of her original role in the film. Chris Terrio, the writer of The Rise of Skywalker explained to Awards Daily quoteWell, first of all, J.J. and I adore Kelly Marie Tran. One of the reasons that Rose has a few less scenes than we would like her to have has to do with the difficulty of using Carrie’s footage in the way we wanted to. We wanted Rose to be the anchor at the rebel base who was with Leia. We thought we couldn’t leave Leia at the base without any of the principals whom we love, so Leia and Rose were working together. As the process evolved, a few scenes we’d written with Rose and Leia turned out to not meet the standard of photorealism that we’d hoped for. Those scenes unfortunately fell out of the film. The last thing we were doing was deliberately trying to sideline Rose. We adore the character, and we adore Kelly – so much so that we anchored her with our favorite person in this galaxy, General Leia.” unquote

Never fear fans, The Mandalorian WILL be back, creator and Showrunner Jon Favreau has confirmed on twitter that the Disney Plus series will launch in the Fall of 2020. Rumors are that several established Skywalker saga characters will make appearances on the show.

Star Trek

The only reason for me to get CBS All Access is almost here, Star Trek Picard is just days away and there’s plenty of supplementary material to go over, the comic series is out now and in February comes the book, Star Trek Picard: The Last Best Hope by Una McCormack. Much like the comic book, this is another prequel to the series and will introduce some of the characters that we will see in the show. No word on the exact plot of the book, but it will be out just 3 days before my birthday on February 11th.

Meanwhile, that other Star Trek  Discovery might just be closer to its third season premiere than we thought. Sonequa Martin Green, speaking with Radio Times dot com said of the third season quote“It’s definitely coming up 2020,” “And I would venture to say closer to early 2020 than anything, but yeah, it’s going to be incredible. I can tell you that. I think it’s a stunning season.

“That’s why it’s so stirring to me… in like this moment right now, to talk about the beginning, that’s what is so interesting to me – to be where we are now, but to know where we came from. And I really think we did what all shows should do, and got better with age and get better with time It’s really quite gripping to see where we’ve come and how we continue to build and grow, to higher heights and deeper depths.” unquote. Season three sees the Discovery now in the far future. Where they will be no tribble at all with established continuity.

Pocket Books is looking back at the untold era between The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Kahn with Star Trek The Higher Frontier by Christopher L Bennett. The novel also connects to the original series episode Is There In Truth No Beauty? And features Dr. Miranda Jones and the Medusan ambassador. Here’s the blurb quote “Investigating the massacre of a telepathic minority, Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise confront a terrifying new threat: faceless, armored hunters whose extradimensional technology makes them seemingly unstoppable. Kirk must team with the powerful telepath Miranda Jones and the enigmatic Medusans to take on these merciless killers in an epic battle that will reveal the true faces of both enemy and ally!” unquote The novel will be out on March tenth.

IDW has released the Star Trek comic book listing for those coming out in March, fist up they introduce us to the mirror Universe Kahn …wait wouldn’t that just be Nhak? NHHHHHHHAAAAKKK! In Star Trek Hell’s Mirror. Not only do we return to the mirror universe we are shepherded by JM DeMatteis who is returning to the Star Trek universe for the first time in 40 years. His last contribution was the final issue of Marvel’s Star Trek series in 1982. Here’s the blurb: Legendary writer J.M. DeMatteis returns to Star Trek for the first time in nearly 40 years! And it’ll be well worth the wait, as he tackles two of the franchise’s most popular concepts: Khan Noonien Singh and the Mirror Universe! Unquote the book has art by Matthew Dow Smith and retails for 4.99

Also out is Star Trek Year Five issue 12 written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly with art by Stephen Thompson. Here’s the blurb quot eAt last—the moment you’ve been waiting for since the first page of issue #1! With a villain revealed, a stranded crew, and a ship on a collision course with total destruction, Captain James T. Kirk will have to face the biggest challenge of his life on his own!Written by showrunners Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly (Green Arrow, Nightwing, Gotham City Garage) this is a perfect jumping-on point before the second year of the series begins. It retails for 3.99. You can preorder those and other comics from mycomicshop and things from another world. Links to those are in our affiliate marketplace on our home page.

Not often I speak of he who should not be named. But American President Donald Trump has created the United States Space Force, when he signed a new defense budget into law. The newest branch of the military will be kind of a hand me down right now with a small staff of 200 military and civilians mostly US air force as it will be under the aegis of the Air Force Dept. and a budget of 40 million. Tech Entrepreneur Elon Musk seemed to praise this development by; quoting two words, quote Starfleet Begins unquote

Hate to tell you this Elon, I don’t think exploring space is what these guys wanna do.

May twenty third will be a special day in the city of Bloomington Indiana. A few episodes back I told you about the fundraising campaign to get a monument erected in Bloomington celebrating the fact that the city will be the birthplace of Captain Kathryn Janeway. The Captain Janeway Bloomington Collective met its goal of 12,500 and will receive matching funds from the Indiana Housing and Community Development. So on May twenty third, just 3 days after the fictional characters birthday, a bust bearing the likeness of Kate mulgrew’s character will be unveiled in downtown Bloomington. The bust will be on a limestone base shaped like the Starfleet delta and include an informational tablet about the captain of the Voyager.

ViacomCBS now owns a forty nine percent stake in Miramax. They bought it fromMiramax owner  Qatar based BeIN media Group for a total of three hundred seventy five million dollars. ViacomCBS will pay one hundred fifty million upfront and the rest will be in forty five million a year for five year in funds to produce new film and tv projects. Paramount will get an exclusive long term deal for Miramax’s back catalog. President and CEO of Viacom CBS Bob Bakish in a statement said quote“Miramax is a renowned global studio, responsible for some of the most iconic films of the last three decades, including ‘Pulp Fiction,’ ‘Good Will Hunting,’ ‘Kill Bill’ and more,” “This partnership with beIN will be a unique opportunity to gain access to a valuable library, deepening our already substantial pool of IP at a time when demand for premium content is only accelerating. We look forward to working closely with the Miramax management team as we explore new ways to deliver its titles across a variety of platforms and create new, compelling projects.” unquote Now if they wanna make me happy, release Kevin Smith’s movies all in High Def.

It’s the end of the year and that means lists. Forbes has released a list of the highest paid Youtubers and it’s not me. Did you know we have a Youtube channel? Anyway. The number one on the list was Ryan Kaji, the q year old kid behind Ryan’s World. He has 22.9 million subscribers and made 26 million dollars. I wonder who the new Youtube FTC rules will affect his channel since I’m guessing most of his views are from kids. Also on the list is Dude Perfect, Anastasia (Rad-zin-skaya) Radzinskaya and PewDiePie among others. PewDiePie is apparently taking a break from Youtube and has also quit twitter. Maybe he’s decided to look at the world outside of just four walls.

Uncharted has possibly lost another director. Director Travis Knight might be leaving Uncharted, based on the video game series of the same name, Travis made his directorial debut last year with Bumblebee. Insiders are blaming the exit on schedulting issues as Actor Tom Holland has a Spiderman  movie due out in July of 2021 and that production might push Uncharted back away fronm the December 18th 2020 date. Tom Holland will be playing Drake in Uncharted and Mark Wahlberg will play Drake’s friend Sully.

Episode 57

Tonight! It’s a new year and a new decade, but the news rolls on in this comic edition of Multiverse Tonight.

Greetings and welcome to the comics edition of Multiverse Tonight. Episode 57.

Welcome to 2020. So how was 2019 for you, read anything good? Watch any good tv or movies? Are you ready for this year? Me personally, I’m at a point in my life where the years just run together. It’s only when you look at the big picture do you see how much it all changed.

DC

So Watchmen was a pretty great show. But something we never got? A cameo with President robert redford. The actor became president in the Watchmen Universe after nixon.  Apparently showrunner Damon Lindelof did leave the door open for a cameo but it was not to be. Lindelof told collider quote “We wrote Robert Redford a letter, describing our intention with his usage in the show. And, also, what our general sense of what Watchmen was to us. And, an incredibly high esteem in which we hold him both as an actor, and a purveyor of the arts. And, also, as a prominent progressive liberal, who shares many of the same ideologies with a number of us, behind the scenes. And, we left the door open in that letter, should he choose to respond to it, that we would invite him to come and play on the show, if he were game. He’s a very busy man, and he has yet to respond to the letter. But, hopefully, one day we will cross paths, and that door will always be open,” unquote Unfortunately there are currently no plans for a second season.

Well unfortunately there won’t be another season of Lucifer either, however congratulations to the show are in order as the show has been named number one on tv times most streaming series list. The list is based upon global data from the apps users. It beat our Stranger Things, 13 reasons why, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Umbrella Academy, Black Mirror and more. Lucifers final season is currently in production.

Todd Phillips director of the mega hit Joker wants you to keep an open mind when it comes to the origins of the Joker, quote “There’s many ways to look at the movie. He might not be Joker,”. “This is just a version of a Joker origin. It’s just the version this guy is telling in this room at a mental institution. I don’t know that he’s the most reliable narrator in the world, you know what I’m saying?” unquote Phillips said this in Joker Vision and Fury on of the featurettes on the home video release. In other words, there is no defined Joker backstory, it’s whatever he feels like.

Mark Hamill is thankful this season, sure not for the Rise of Skywalker and the end of The Skywalker Saga, but for a role just as famous. Mark took to twitter and tweeted out a few Joker centric images with the tweet quote I can’t tell you how much 1 single role has meant to me. Because of him people recognized the gleeful psycho within-Because of him a new career of megalomaniacal villainy opened up & I was now able to frighten young children-I will be grateful for that…Forever🃏#BeingTheJoker unquote To some he will always be Luke Skywalker, but to others he will forever be the Joker.

DC’s Geoff Johns is teasing some Green Lantern news is coming. Speaking with Newsarama he said quote “It’s a really exciting year to have Doomsday Clock finished up,” “I’m doing more comics. Stargirl trailer’s out. Wonder Woman’s on its way. And a lot of work with Green Lantern outside comics that hopefully you’ll hear about soon.” unquote So what could this Green lantern project be, a Green Lantern Corps movie? Green Lantern The series on HBO Max perhaps. Whatever it is, remember, no animated suits. Just green, the only thing that should be animated are the ring creations.

Black Panther star Michael B Jordan was asked by MTV News if there was any truth to the rumors of him playing Superman in the future.  The actor responded quote “I’ve been rumored to play Morpheus to Superman to Power Rangers and everything in between, so it’s like, I’m kind of used to the rumors I’m playing something,” he said. “But anything that I do dive into has to be done the right way. It has to be full of authenticity.” unquote. Michael is a fan of comics and Variety has reported that he doesn’t want to commit to playing Superman when he has so many other projects on his plate.

In a tweet this past Saturday, David Ayer’s confirmed that Suicide Squad would have had more of a connection to Justice League of an original plot element involving Enchantress stayed in.”It was supposed to be a boom tube as she was under control of a motherbox,” “All the Apokalypse [sic] elements were stripped out late in the game. The machine concept was an attempt to create a ticking clock and world threat.” unquote.  Hmmm. DO you think they should have kept the boomtube in?

I don’t know how to feel about this one. Okay, you might have figured out the past few episodes that I really don’t care for Robert Pattinson. He just doesn’t work as an actor for me and his casting as Batman in Matt reeves The Batman is *sigh* Well Mr. Pattinson recently did an Interview with The Guardian where he revealed how sick he was of questions about the movie and that he just wanted to get down to filming already saying quote “I’m already remembering what it’s like to talk about a movie where there’s an expectation. Whenever you say anything, people are like, ‘Argh! You idiot!’ Like, dude, I haven’t even started yet,” unquote When the interviewer pointed out that the having this role is a lot to live up to Pattinson said quote “But there is no harsher critic of myself than myself, so I don’t need to worry about anyone else.” unquote When asked what he might do if the movie totally bombs, Pattinson giggled and gave shot back quote “Porn,” “But art house porn.”  unquote I’m conflicted. I don’t know if I’d rather see him do porn or not. He might be a terrible porn actor as well.

DC has announced that Superman issue nineteen, the first since Superman revealed to the world his secret identity will be pushed back a couple of weeks from January 8th to the 22nd. Issues 20 and 21 however are still on schedule.

The New York Times best selling authors Shannon and Dean Hale are writing a new graphic novel for young readers. Diana Princess of the Amazons looks at the pre Wonder Woman’s life as a young girl on an island with no other children. Themyscira after all never had any children on it, just strong adult warriors. The book has artwork by Victoria Yang, who is a veteran of animation and it making her debut for DC Comics. Shannon has always been a fan of Wonder Woman growing up with the character and even driving a minivan with the Wonder Woman logo on the hood.  Newsarama asked the couple when they chose to do a story about her as a child and Shannon replied quote We were fascinated with the idea of growing up as the only kid in your entire world. And that’s just not something we’d seen explored very deeply with Wonder Woman.

Yes, she’s an Amazon, and she’s incredibly strong and has a sense of justice and is one of the most powerful superheroes. And we’ve seen her relationship with her sisters on Themyscira.

But what was it like before that? What did it feel like to be the only kid?

Given that we were writing these books for younger readers, I thought that was something kids would be really fascinated with. Imagine being the only kid in your entire world, and then imagine that everyone else is an immortal, perfect warrior.

How do you find your place there?

That’s where we began.

Diana Princess of the Amazons comes out on January seventh.

Ryan Renoylds appearing on Live with Kelly and Ryan confirmed that they are currently working on Deadpool 3. He told the hosts quote “Yeah we’re working on it right now with the whole team,” “We’re over at Marvel [Studios] now, which is like the big leagues all of a sudden. It’s kinda crazy. So yeah, we’re working on it.” unquote So I’ guessing same Deadpool with access to the MCU? Maybe? We can hope.

Kevin Fiege is backing off the idea that Doctor Strange and the multiverse of Madness is a horror movie telling the New York Film Academy that quote “I wouldn’t necessarily say that’s a horror film, but … it’ll be a big MCU film with scary sequences in it.” unquote He also confirmed that some new characters will be debuting in the movie as well. “The next Doctor Strange film, for instance, features some new MCU characters which will be making their debut in that movie you won’t expect or won’t guess who it is but we found a cool way to make it work because we want to make a particular type of movie there and there was a character who we always wanted to do something with who will fit really well there.”unquote Who it will be is still a mystery.

At the same event, Feige was asked how Marvel determines which chatacteres will make the jump from the comic page to the big screen and his answer contained a bit of news quote “Sometimes you’re choosing the title hero, you’re choosing which main character or main team you want to bring to the screen,”“And often times, as you’re making and developing the movie, [asking], ‘Who will come into it? Who will fit into it?’”

“Like Shang-Chi, we’ve wanted to make that movie for a long time. We want to make a movie with a 98% Asian cast,” “And then you talk about, as you develop the movie, what other heroes can you bring into it, if you need them? And in the case of Black Panther [in Captain America: Civil War], it was the greatest thing that ever happened.”

Shang-Chi and teh Legend of the ten rings will star Simu Liu, Awkwafina and Tony Chiu-Wai Leung and will lead off Marvel Studios offerings in 2021.

Marvel’s What If series will have a longer season than any other Disney Plus Marvel show. WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and oki all have six episode seasons. But in a new interview with Buzzfeed Brazil, Kevin Feige revealed that What If will have a ten episode first season. Quote “I’m very happy that we’re doing the What If…? series for Disney+ right now, and I’ve seen most of them. We have ten for Season 1, we’re already working on the next ten for Season 2,” he said. “We’ve revealed one that is very exciting, we’ve talked about it for years, which is the one where Peggy Carter gets the Super Soldier serum and becomes Captain Carter. That’s the very first episode, and I’m excited for people to see that. I’m excited to see the finished version of that, and I’m excited for the world to see it.”“What If…? is based on a comic series that we’ve loved for years, where they take a storyline you know and change one element, and see how things could get different,” Feige said. “So the 23 films of the MCU that you know are gonna showcase one little difference in each episode, and see how things change.” The show will be narrated by Jeffery Wright as the Watcher and feature an all star cast from the Marvel movies. But be prepared to wait, we’re still about 18 months away as it will premiere in Summer of 21.

James Cameron does what James Cameron does.  And he seems to be certain that his Avatar sequels will break the current all time global box office record set by Avenges Endgame. He told USA today that quote “I think it’s a certainty,” “But let’s give Endgame their moment and let’s celebrate that people are going to the movie theater.””I don’t want to sound snarky after I took the high road (by offering congratulations),”. “But they beat us by one quarter of a percent. I did the math in my head while driving in this morning. I think accountants call that a rounding error.” So let’s look at the math. Avengers Endgame made 2, 797, 800, 564 globally beating our Avatar’s 2, 029, 450, 992 that’s a difference of 768 million 349 thousand 572 dollars. That’s more than a rounding error. Avatar 2 is coming on December seventeenth of 2021.

Valiant Entertainment is getting back in the video game biz. This time the company is joining forces with Blowfish Studios to do games based on Bloodshot and Ninjak. The last time there were video games was back in the mid 90’s when the company was owned by Acclaim Entertainment. Valiant is hoping for a bit of a renesauce next year with a movie based on Bloodshot starring Vin Diesel that is set to open on February twenty first. They are also working on a Harbinger movie and a tv series based on Quantum & Woody.

Alanguilan is best known as the inker on titles like Wetworks, X-Men, Superman: Birthright, Wolverine and Fantastic Four, usually alongside penciler Leinil Francis Yu. He also created his own comic books, Johnny Balbona, Humanis rex!, Elmer, Timawa and Where Bold Stars go to Die in his native Philippines. Marvel editor in chief CB Cebulski tweeted about him quote “Another wonderful person taken from us too soon. An amazingly talented writer and inker, mentor to younger artists, and advocate for global comics, the comics world and Filipino art community lost a friend and hero today.” unquote The cause of his death has not been disclosed. Gerry Alanguilan was 54 years old.

Show Notes: Episode 54: Death in Winter & Episode 55: A Grouch for All Seasons

Tonight! Baby Yoda says buckle up, Picard’s got more adventures coming and we say goodbye to three of the greats on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Hello and welcome to the SciFi edition of Multiverse Tonight. This is episode 54,

So, we’re halfway through December, are you ready to finish the year,. I think we’re all ready to get done with this year and get into 2020. This is the time of year it seems that things slow down. I’m always amazed that there’s enough to really report on. But a few things always come up.

So before we get going with the show, can you do something for me? Share the show with others, if you really like the show throw me a bone and donate. Let’s get on with the news.

Star Wars

Baby Yoda wants you to know he still needs a carseat in the state of Mississippi. Or at least a Star Wars The Mandalorian fan wants you to  think that. The official twitter account for the Mississippi Department of Transportation posted a photoshopped highway sign that read quote Baby Yoda Uses the Force but still needs a carseat. Unquote They also captioned it with quote Buckle up. This is the way. #BabyYoda.

You know, Baby Yoda, Porgs, Ewoks. All cute, all more popular than almost anything else in the Star Wars Universe. Maybe they should just make a show starring Baby Yoda playing with Porgs and Ewoks.

Speaking of the small green Muppet, Mandalorian Director Bryce Dallas Howard has broken her silence on how it was to keep the character a secret. Telling the Hollywood reporter quote “Agonizing,” Howard replied with a laugh. “I’ve been walking around for the last year with a face like the cat that ate the canary. I’m so, so, so excited to be a part of this and the phenomenon that Baby has become. The thing I was most nervous about was that my kids had been on set quite a bit. So they had seen Baby and interacted with Baby. When we were filming, my kids were 6 and 11; they’re now 7 and 12. When the kids went back to school, every single day I would say, ‘So, what are you not gonna talk about today?’ And they would say, ‘Baby!’ (Laughs) I’d be like, ‘That’s right!’ I would just consistently remind them that there’s no circumstance that could ever arise where they’re allowed to talk about Baby. Now, for them, it’s very confusing, because I’m like, ‘Oh, now, you can talk about Baby,’ and they’re like, ‘Oh, okay.’ We’ve been having this routine for about a year now, and it’s fun; it’s really, really fun. Everyone is super pissed that there’s no merch. (Laughs) Everyone is like, ‘I want a Baby Yoda stuffed toy!’ But I think they made a good choice in not focusing there and just focusing on the storytelling.” unquote . And I’m still SO behind in watching it. Only watched episode one. Too much to watch so little time.

The press tour for the final Skywalker movie is in full swing and JJ Abrams in an interview with Cinema Blend talked about Carrie Fisher’s role in the movie, despite her passing nearly three years ago. This involved using unused footage from The Force Awakens. JJ told them quote “Clearly we would have done other things had Carrie been around, but I will say despite her not being with us anymore, her presence in the movie is not inconsequential,” “She’s not being ‘added in’ so that she’s in the movie. And I would say that her story, her role, the importance of Leia, I would argue is as profound as what you’re saying even though she wasn’t here.””There was no way, as I’ve said before, to tell the story without Leia. She’s too important. It’s Skywalker saga. She is the living Skywalker in our story. You don’t want to start the story and say something happened to her in between movies. It didn’t feel right. We’d never recast it. A digital Leia wouldn’t work. There was no way to do it.” “When we looked at the footage from [Star Wars:] The Force Awakens, which I was obviously very familiar with, and realized we had a number of scenes we could use, and, and write scenes around, it was suddenly like, ‘Oh my God, we could tell the story with Leia in the film.” unquote

The rise of Skywalker comes out in just a few days from now.

Disney is warning fans that the new Star Wars movie could trigger seizures with those people with epilepsy. Disney issued a statement with the Epilepsy Foundation that the film contains quote “several sequences with imagery and sustained flashing lights” that could affect those with photosensitive epilepsy. My guess would be flashes from lightsabers hitting together. Disney suggests that theaters post notices to warn of the risk. Flashing lights can trigger seizures in about three percent of individuals who have epilepsy. This isn’t the first time Disney has given this notice, they also did it for The Incredibles II.

Star Trek

The merger of Viacom and CBS is now official and the newly reunited company is busy merging, selling unneeded headquarters, eliminating duplicate positions and forth.

This also means that the Star Trek movie and tv rights are now back under one roof. What will that mean for the franchise? New movies featuring the tv characters from the new shows?

So with that behind us, let’s check in with the Section 31 show. The new show is set to start filming once Discovery’s season three is done. CBS All Access executive vice president Julie McNamara talking to Vanity Fair said that the writers room under Alex Krutzman has been assembled quote “We are very excited about the Section 31 show and Michelle Yeoh is excited to do it,”. “She is in the current season of Discovery so she’s working on that right now but we have scripts getting written, and Alex has a writer’s room. We love what we’ve heard so far. It’s yet another tonality of Trek. As Alex has mapped it all out, each show has its own unique sort of voice and vision.”

Mr. Kurtzman has dropped some hints of the tone of the show comparing it to a Clint Eastwood style Western.. Saying quote It occupies an area of the Trek universe that’s never really been explored geographically. It has a new mythology to it, which is very interesting. And it puts Michelle’s character to the test in a lot of ways that Discovery can’t. In some ways it will be her Unforgiven, I would say.” Unquote

And yesterday we got the news the Star Trek Picard will not be just a one shot series. The show has been renewed for season two. However Michael Chabon will not be a part of season two as he’s been named showrunner for the adaptation of the Cavalier and Klay novels over at showtime. No word on when the second season will be, but It’ll probably be in late 2020 or sometime in 2021.

William Shatner is going someplace he knows very well, Divorce Court. The soon to be Four Time Divorcee has filed for divorce from his wife Elizabeth, his wife of the past eighteen years. This will be a smooth divorce as Mister Shatner is a fan of prenuptial agreements. Bill first got married back in 1956, that lasted to 1969. His next one was from 1973 to 1994. His next marriage in 1997 didn’t last long ending with the death of Nerine Kidd in 1999. Odds are that this latest marriage will be his last. William Shatner is 88 years old.

Good news or bad news depending on what side of the coin your on. Quientin tarantino speaking with the consequence of sound dot net was asked if Star Trek was going to be part of hsi planned ten films. He replied quote I think I’m steering away from Star Trek, but I haven’t had an official conversation with those guys yet. In a strange way, it seems like this movie, Hollywood, would be my last. So, I’ve kind of taken the pressure off myself to make that last big voilà kind of statement. I mean to such a degree there was a moment when I was writing and went, “Should I do this now? Should I do something else? Is this the 10th one?” No, no don’t stop the planets from aligning, what are you, Galactus? If the Earth is saying do it, do it. Not that it was an argument, but a little thought, like, “Well, if I’m gonna go out like Max Ophüls style, Lola Montez, this is it, and if It’s not good, then all my other work is trash, alright.” This would have been the one. But in a weird way, it actually kind of freed me up. I mean, I have no idea what the story of the next one’s going to be. I don’t even have a clue. Unquote

And now for some sad news Michael Lamper, husband of Next Generation actress Marina Sirtis has passed away. Marina broke the news on twitter saying quoteI’m going to be gone for a while. My beloved husband passed away peacefully in his sleep last night. For those of you waiting for a shoutout on Cameo, please forgive me I don’t feel up to i. I’ll let you know when the service is back on. Unquote Michael was a rock guitarist and musician who once portrayed an Acamarian Gatherer in the TNG third season episode The Vengeance Factor.  He and Marina married on June twenty first 1992 with Brent Spiner and Michael Dorn acting as groomsman in a traditional greek ceremony. His rock carrer saw him play with such musicians as Tommy Shaw from Styx, The Allman Brothers, Quiet Riot and Los Lobos. He was 61. My heart goes out to Marina.

The Matrix Four has cast Jonathan Groff in an unknown role. Groff is most recently known for his role voicing Kristoff in Frozen 2. Johnathan joins returning cast members Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith, as well as newcomers Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris and Jessica Henwick.

Variety has learned that Will Poulter will not be in the Lord of the Rings series on Amazon. Variety has learned through their sources that scheduling conflicts will present him from being a part of it. As to what role he would have played is still unknown.

Power Rangers is getting another big screen reboot, this time it will be at Paramount and will take it back to the 90’s. The Hollywood reporter reports that Paramount is currently in early negotiations with Johnathan Entwistle and would involve quote “a time-travel element that brings the kids to the 1990s, and in Back to the Future fashion, they have to find a way to get back to their present. Unquote

To say that Disney had a very good year at the box office would be an understatement, The House of Mouse broke their own box office record of 7.6 billion set back in 2016 crossing the ten billion dollar ceiling. It should be noted that this doesn’t include it’s newly acquired Fox movies. If those are factored in the number would be nearly 12 billion.  Disney currently also holds six of the ten biggest movies of the year.

The Golden Globe nominations are out. Netflix walked away with thirty four nominations. Seventeen for motion pictures and 17 for television. HBO came in second with fifteen. The movie Marriage Story had the most for a film. While Chernobyl, the Crown and Unbelievable had the most for television. Geeky films getting nominations included Joker with four including Best Motion Picture, Best Director , Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and best score. Also getting nominations were Frozen 2, How to train your dragon the hidden world and toy story 4. Only one Geeky tv nomination Game of Thrones with one best actor nomination for Kit Harington.

Death seemed to be busy. A few minutes ago I talked about the death of Deanna Sirtis’s husband. Well, there are three more.

First off, we say goodbye to actor Robert Walker Jr. The actor passed away in Malibu on December sixth. He will be best known to people as Charlie Evans the boy raised by the Thasians who gave him omnipotent power in the episode Charlie X. He also appeared in episodes of The Time Tunnel, Bonanza, the Six Million Dollar Man and Chips. He also had a role in the movie Easy rider. In a statement his wife said about roebert quote “Bob always beat to his own drum and stayed true to himself in all of his endeavors,” his wife said in a statement. “Although an accomplished actor, his true art was living fully. He was a photographer, drummer, raconteur and gallery owner. His love of the ocean kept him in Malibu, and he had great tales of his adventures paddling to Catalina from there. Bob [also] had a constant interest in developing his internal martial arts practice.” He is survived by his wife, seven children and five grandchildren. He was 79.

Next is Star Trek writer Dorthy Catherine Fontana better known as DC Fontana. DC began as a secretary for tv writer Samuel A Peeples, while working for him, she became a professional writer writing stories for The Tall Man and Frontier Circus. Later she began working for Gene Roddenberry’s series The Lieutenant as a secretary for producer Del Reisman. Eventually she wanted to work for Gene directly and after finding out that she wanted to become a writer, Roddenberry encouraged her. In 1964, she would publish her first novel, a western called Brazos River co written with Harry Sanford.

When Roddenberry began working on Star Trek and with the encouragement of associate producer Robert Justmn, she began working on the show Where she wrote the teleplay for Charlie X She worked on ten episodes overall including tomorrow is Yesterday, This Side of Paradise, which got her a promotion to story editor, Journey to Babel, friday’s child, the ultimate computer, The city on the edge of forever, The Enterprise Incident, That which survives and The Way to eden. When the Star trek the Next Generation began, she went to Gene immediately where he pitched an idea to her that became the pilot episode Encounter at Farpoint. She would become an associate producer on the series but left during the first season due to reported  difficulties with writer Robert Lewin caused a bit of a falling out between her and Gene Roddenberry and she left. . She would later return to star Trek writing the Deep Space Nine episode Dax.

She also wrote the Star Trek bok Vulcan’s Glory and an episode of the fan made series Star Trek New Voyages.

DC Fontana is survived by her husband Dennis Skotak, who told the New York Times that the cause of her death was cancer. She was eighty years old.

Finally we say farewell to Rene Auberjonois, the actor known to Star Trek fans for his portrayal of

Constable Odo on Star trek Deep Space Nine as well as directing eight episodes of the show. Rene was born in New York in 1940. After college he began his acting career in earnest working with theater companies in Washington DC, San Francisco , LA and New York. In 1968, he landed a role on Broadway appearing in three films simultaneously. A year later he would win a Tony Award for his role opposite Katharine Hepburn in Coco. He directed and acted in lots of productions over the years and was inducted into the American theater Hall of Fame in 2018.

His Film work is vast as well. He played Father Mulcahy in the film version of MASH, played a gangster in Police Academy 5, Dr. Burton in Batman Forever and appeared as Colonel West in Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country. His final film role in a movie called Cortex has yet to be released.

But his most known work was in Television. He worked in that medium since 1966. He also said that he was a dedicated father and had a fantastic sense of humor.

Rene Auberjonois was 79 years old.

Tonight! Synder cut…subway sandwiches, Birds of Prey is not a sequel and we say Farewell to the man in the Big Bird on this comic edition of Multiverse Tonight.

Greetings and welcome to the comics edition of Multiverse Tonight. Episode 55.

So…here we are, just a week away from Christmas, little over a week until the end of the year. What do you want for Christmas? What do you want from next year?

Here’s what I want. I want to do a good job for you with this podcast. All I ask of you is to share the show with your friends, donate a buck or two if you feel generous. Just go to the site for more.

DC

Are you starting to get tired of all the calls to release the Snyder cut of Justice League? It’s kinda one of those things that just won’t die. Well Subway restaurants have put in their two cents via twitter. Snyder fans started it by asking the company how many retweets it would take to get a donation of 10,000 sandwiches by Subway. Subway responded by saying that 5000 retweets in five hours would get it done. The fans came through Subway soon tweeted quote  So you’re fast… and since you did it in under 214 minutes we are going to up the donation to 15,000 subs! And oh yeah, #ReleaseTheSnyderCut unquote Good on them and good on the fans. My guess is that the cut will eventually see the light of day. Maybe if they all pledge to make some movie of Warner Bros a success that normally wouldn’t they’d get the studios attention?

The cinematographer for Black Adam, Lawrence Sher is making some high claims for what the movie will be. Telling Collier during a Q&A for Joker quote “One of my interests about it is to continue to sort of — and we’ve talked about it with Dwayne and obviously with Jaume and DC — can we continue to sort of reshape what a comic book movie is?” “Like yes, of course you want it to be entertaining and it has to make a decent amount of money so it can’t live in such a fringe place that it doesn’t bring people in, but can we do something inventive? So that’s the goal is to continue to try to do something a bit inventive with it.” That’s a big bold claim for a movie that we haven’t seen anything from yet. Hopefully he won’t end up eating those words.

So what do you think of Jokers potential for an Oscar Nomination? Well if the critics choice award nominations are any indication. There’s a chance. Joker has received seven nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix, Best Adapted Screenplay for Todd Phillips and Scott Silver, Best Cinematography for Lawrence Sher, Best Production Design for Mark Friedberg and Kris Moran, Best Hair and Makeup, and Best Score for Hildur Guanadottir. They weren’t the only comics property to get some nominations: Avengers Endgame and Spiderman Far From Home got nominations for Best Action Movie. Avengers Endgame also got a nod for Best SciFi or Horror Movie as well as best visual effects. HBO’s Watchmen got a nomination for Best Drama, it faces off against Game of Thrones in that category but I think Watchmen’s got this. Watchmen’s Regina King got is up for Best Actress in  a Drama , Tim Blake Nelson is up for Best Supporting Actor, Jean Smart Watchmen and Gwendoline Christies is up for Best Supporting Actress. The twenty fifth Critics Choice Awards will be handed out on Sunday January twelfth.

Well here’s something to make you go huh? The upcoming Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn will have no ties to Suicide Squad according to BoP director Sue Kroll during a set visit by Screen Rant. She told them quote “You’ll see it in the movie, it’s a standalone movie, it’s not connected to Suicide Squad. It’s not a sequel, it’s not a continuation of that story. So it has nothing to do with her break out of prison. But you’re right, and we’ve been very upfront that this is about her emancipation. She and the Joker have broken up. This is her personal journey of discovery with these women. So it’s not related at all, so don’t try to apply linear logic to how the two go, because they don’t.” unquote She also told them that it has no similarities to Suicide Squad and that it was an oportunity to celebrate the amazing character.

So let’s just unwind this this movie is…I’m assuming in the same universe as Suicide Squad, but it will in no way connect to Suicide Squad…not even a mention. They do realize that having Harley Quinn, the same character played by the same actress still connects it to Suicide Squad, don’t they? Maybe I should just stop and lie down for awhile, this is making my head hurt. Birds of Prey comes out on February seventh.

Let’s talk tv for a moment. The big Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover has had many cameos, Burt Ward’s Dick Grayson, Lucifer. Apparently Arrowverse producer Marc Guggenheim put out feelers to another star Nicolas Cage. In an interview with Indiewire Mr. Guggenheim said quote”We did reach out to Nic Cage,” Guggenheim revealed during an interview with Indiewire. “We reached out to a lot of people, and there were people who didn’t want to do it. There were people who would only do it for amounts of money that we could not ever afford. And there were other people who really wanted to do it, but couldn’t for scheduling. That was the case with a lot of, I have to say, the movie stars that we reached out to. The thing about movie stars is, they’re all shooting movies. And unless those movies are shooting in Vancouver, we’re kind of out of luck. But I have to say that the sheer number of actors that we did end up getting exceeded my expectation.” unquote. Too bad, he could have finally gotten to wear that Superman suit on screen.

The Crisis will conclude on January fourteenth. Maybe next year they should do Zero Hour.

Marvel

Kevin Feige Marvel Studios president and chief creative officer of Marvel confirmed at Brazil’s CCXP19 con that Disney Plus’ Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be all about what happens to the falcon after endgame. Quote “We saw Old Man Cap hand that shield to Sam Wilson at the end of [Endgame], and the question is, what did he do with it next? What does it mean for Sam Wilson and that shield?” Feige said at Brazil’s CCXP19. “That’s a big responsibility, and that’s very much what the show focuses on and is about.” unquote Unfortunatly Wilson will have to deal with the US government’s U.S. Agent just in time for Helmut Zemo to come back on the scene. Sounds interesting, we still have no release date though other than the always enigmatic Fall 2020.

Speaking of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier they’ve added two new cast members Desmond Chiam and Miki Ishikawa have been added in two unknown roles.

Also at CCXP19, in a sit down interview, Mr. Feige confirmed that the Marvel Multiverse will be something that will shape the MCU for a long time to come.“When we first started the MCU, it was all about Tony Stark. Introduce the world to Tony Stark and that Iron Man armor,” “Then [we] went on to teach people what Asgardians were and learn about super soldiers then bring them together in Avengers. I’ve always loved space movies and I’ve always loved big intergalactic tales, which is why we did Guardians and the audience came with us so we could do a movie like Endgame. I always wanted to do time travel, which we finally got to do in Endgame. The multiverse is the next step in the evolution of the MCU and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is going to crack it open in ways that will have repercussions for a Disney+ series before it that’s not WandaVision and for movies after it in a big fun way.” unquote it’s also thought that the Loki series will tie into this in some way, Well we will have even longer to wait than Falcon and the winter soldier. WandaVision comes out in Spring of 21 and Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness comes out May 7th of 21.

Speaking of WandaVision, some paparazzi photos from the set of the show have surfaced online and they show that the space faring version of SHIELD will be in the show. SWORD. SWORD aka the Sentient World Observation and Response Department was one of the properties that used to belong to the 20th Century Fox subset of Marvel characters.

Could Venom 2 get an  R rating. And you might be able to thank Joker’s Billion dollar box office for that. Venom Producer Matt tolmach told Cinema blend quote  I mean, I think you always have to think about [it], now that that works. Having said that, our movie worked really well. Our franchise exists as it is, and I don’t think anybody is looking to just say, ‘Hey, they [did it]!’ We have a place in the world. So it isn’t like suddenly everybody’s considering what to do with the rating. … I think what Joker does is it tells you that you can succeed. For a very long time, that was the narrative. And Deadpool sort of wrestled that to the turf, and then Logan, but for a long time, that was considered totally forbidden. … So you know, I think it’s the greatest thing in the world that R-rated movies are being embraced by massive audiences. And it just means that there are more opportunities for that kind of storytelling.

Prepare to relieve the greatest moments in Marvel’s eighty year history. Marvel Snapshots will see Kurt Busiek bring together several creative teams for these eight standalone double sized issues which will include characters from the Golden Age to today through the eyes of ordinary people. Alex Ross will provide the covers.

First off is Sub Mariner: Marvels Snapshot number one. Best Selling Novelist and emmy Award winning writer Alan Brennert and artist Jerry Ordway join forces to tell an unforgettable story about Prince Namor set during WORLD WAR II featuring Namor, Betty Dean and the All Winners Squad. Alan Brennert in a statement on Marvel dot com said quote “I can honestly say that I enjoyed working on this story more than any comics story I’ve done in years. I grew up reading (and loving) Marvel’s Golden Age heroes in the 1960s, in reprints in FANTASY MASTERPIECES. But I never thought I’d have a shot at writing them—especially the All-Winners Squad!—and I’m grateful to Kurt Busiek and Tom Brevoort for providing me the opportunity, and to Jerry Ordway for bringing it all to glorious life,”. “I’m enormously proud of ‘Reunion’ and honored to be the first story published in MARVEL’S SNAPSHOTS.” unquote

This year’s long journey begins this March at your local comic book store.

Marvel has postponed the release of issue five, six and seven of X-Men by a month. Issue five will now be out on January 29th, issue six will come on February twelfth and seven will come on the twenty sixth of February.

Geek

We start the Geek news with a record setting opening…and not a good one. Playmobil: The Movie just set the record for the Lowest Box Office for a film opening in over 2000 theatres. The movie based on the toys was sort of an answer to the Lego movie. Unfortunately, Playmobil is not as well known as Lego. Rotten Tomatoes has given the movie a sixteen percent. We will check what it did this weekend and how won the pre Star Wars box office in just a moment.

From one record to another potential record setter. Disney’s Frozen 2 just became the sixth film from the House of Mouse to cross the one billion dollar mark this year.  According to Variety, the movie has over six million internationally and three hundred six million in the US. It’s currently the eighth highest grossing movie of the year. We will see if The Rise of Skywalker makes it seven, it would have just 11 days to do so.

Dark Horse Comics is set to adapt Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology into a mini-series. The book was released back in 2017 and features Neil retelling norse mythology starring Thor, Odin, Loki and others. It has been adapted into a BBC radio production. Next year, it’ll be an 18 issue series adapted by Gaiman and P. Craig Russell with colors fromDave Stewart and Lovern Kindzierski, letters by Galen Showman and art from a round table of artists like Jerry Ordway and Mike Mignola. Norse Mythology will hit comic book stores on May 27th, 2020.

Dynamite Entertainment is getting into the novel business. The company has announced the formation of Dynamite Books. First up is Vampirella: Blood Invasion written by Nancy A Collins. Here’s the blurb quote “In Vampirella: Blood Invasion, Vampirella left her planet of Drakulon on a desperate quest to find another source of blood that her people need to survive. After years out of contact, the skies of Earth fill with an armada of ships from her home planet. Thrilled at first to see her people, Vampirella is horrified to learn of General Orlok’s plan for her adopted planet. She must choose between her own kind or to take up arms with her partner Pantha and join a rebel army led by Count Dracula, Evily the Witch and Doctor Frankenstein and his patchwork monstrosities.” unquote

It’s out now along with a line of audiobook adaptations of existing novels including Shaft The Original Novel by Ernest Tidyman. Dynamite Books plans to release one new novel a month.

So let’s look at this past weekend’s box office.

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/

Finally tonight we say goodbye to someone who was a big part of all of our childhoods, Caroll Spinney. You might not know that name but you’ll know the characters he played on Sesame Street, Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch.

Caroll was born in Waltham Massachusetts on December twenty sixth 1933 and became interested in puppetry at a young age. After high school, he served in the Air Force where he created a comic strip called Harvey. After he left the service he moved to Las Vegas where he performed in the show Rascal Rabbit and a few years later he moved to Boston where he would eventually perform on Boston’s broadcast of Bozo’s Big Top.

IN 1960, he got married to his first wife Janice and had three children, they would divorce in 1971

In 1962, Caroll first met Jim Henson at a puppeteering festival, where Jim asked him if he wanted to talk about the Muppets, unfortunately due to a misunderstanding, Caroll didn’t know that he was being offered a job, He met Henson again in 1969 at a Puppeteer festival in Utah, where he was offered to talk about the muppets again. This time Caroll took him up on the offer and he joined the Muppeteers full time later that year, joining the cast of a new show called Sesame Street.

In 1979, Caroll would get married again this time to Debra jean Gilroy whom he would remain married to the rest of his life.

Unfortunately, Caroll would eventually develop dystonia and in October of last year, Spinney announced his retirement from Sesame Street, handing the role of Big bird to matt Vogel and Oscar to Eric Jacobson.

In his long career, Caroll would win four Daytime Emmys, two Grammys, a gold record, a star of the Hollywood Walk of fame, the Library of Congress Living Legend Award and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Lifetime Achievement Award.

Caroll passed away on December eighth at this home in Connecticut. He was eighty five years old.

Show Notes: Episode 52:Baby Yoda’s Merchandising Bonanza and Episode 53: Sorry Robert, Batman IS a hero

Tonight! Star Trek 4 is back on, Baby Yoda is hotter than sliced bread and Trouble on the Satellite of love, all that and more on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to the scifi edition of Multiverse Tonight.

So did you buy anything on Black Friday?  I did, have you noticed that I sound different bought myself a new AT 2020 mic from Sweetwater.com, I also upgraded my tv setup with an Amazon Fire TV Cube. It’s nice to be able to tell my digital assistant to turn on the tv. Picked up a few blu rays from work. Other than that not much, I have my eyes on convention season next year. 2020 is going to be a good year.

Anyway let’s get to the news…

Star Trek

Star Trek 4 is apparently back from the dead. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the Legion and Fargo creator Noah Hawley will direct the fourth film based in the JJ Verse. This film is, of course, a different film than the Quentin Tarantino movie that has been in gestation for a couple of years. And this is totally different than the movie that was in the works earlier this year that would have had Chris hemsworth back as Kirk’s father. Mister Hawley will produce the movie with his 26 Keys shingle alongside Bad robot. No idea on when this movie will be made or distributed.

CBS Television Studios and the Television Academy Foundation are joining forces to launch the Star Trek command training program, a new internship program for college students. The program will launch in 2020 and will reflect the Star Trek franchise’s core values of inclusion and diversity. The program will place two internes per semester on a current Star Trek series based in LA.  Selected interns will actively engage in the writers room, wardrobe design, on set production, animation and post production.

The Academy will oversee the application, vetting and enrollment of the interns and CBS will do the mentorships and program curriculum. The Academy foundation will also give the interns lifetime professional support through their alumni program. The application period starts now through January 21, 2020 with final selections being made at the end of March.

William Shatner has been awarded The Order of Canada, one of Canada’s highest civilian honors. The award is given to Canadians for outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. Honors are given out by the Governor General of Canada from nominations from the public with recommendation from the Order’s Advisory Council.

He was actually appointed to the Order back in 2017, but he’s been apparently too busy to receive the award.

Doctor Seuss Enterprises is firing back at ComicMix after they lost the case over Oh The Places You’ll Boldly Go!, a parody of Oh the Place you’ll Go!. According to Bloomberg Law quote “ComicMix prevailed on summary judgment in March after more than two years of litigation. The trademark claims failed because the title didn’t mislead consumers, and artistic style and font aren’t protectable trademarks, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California ruled.” unquote.

Now Dr. Suess enterprises is appealing the ruling and their being backed the Motion Picture Association of America who’s Amicus brief said quote “There is nothing original about merely combining or ‘mashing up’ protected expression from two copyrighted works to justify such a sweeping exception to the normal rules of fair use.”unquote

When a decision is made, we will let you know.

Jack Johnson, a production illustrator for Star Trek The motion Picture will receive the lifetime achievement award  at the 24th annual excellence in production design awards. Jack has worked as a production illustrator, concept artist or art director on dozens of films like Goonies, edward Sissorhands, Independence Day and Beetlejuice. The award will be given on February first 2020.

Creation Entertainment has announced that the 2020 Star Trek Vegas Convention will be held on August fifth through ninth at the Rio Suites Hotel. The con will see the return of the Nevada Pops Orchestra on Saturday Night. If you’d like me to go there someday…you could always donate to the Patreon or Kofi, please.

Star Wars

The Mandalorians “Baby Yoda” character seems to be causing baby fever online ever since the character debuted in the first episode of the series. While not actually Yoda, the character will have merchandise hitting store shelves soon just in time for the holidays. His image has been plastered on shirts, mugs, bags, phone cases and tumblers on the shop disney site. It’s not great merchandise and seems kinda half assed. Hopefully better merch will come soon.

JJ Abrams had a unique reaction to the death of Supreme Leader Snoke in the last jedi. He laughed. Talking with rolling Stone the director of The Rise of Skywalker said “When I read his first draft, it made me laugh because I saw that was [Johnson’s] take and his voice. I got to watch cuts of the movie as he was working on it, as an audience member. And I appreciated the choices he made as a filmmaker that would probably be very different from the choices that I would have made. Just as he would have made different choices if he had made Episode VII.” What did surprise him? Luke Skywalker he them quote “I felt the biggest surprise was how dark Luke was. That was the thing that I thought: “Oh, that was unexpected.” And that’s the thing The Last Jedi undeniably succeeds at, which is constant subversion of expectation. The number of things that happened in that movie that aren’t the thing you think is going to happen is pretty fun.”

In that interview JJ talked about Rey’s path since The Force Awakens and how she’s taken to the Force like a fish to water, even faster than her mentor Luke Skywalker. JJ said quote Yeah, spooky, right?”Abrams with a smile in an interview with Rolling Stone when the subject of Rey’s Force prowess came up. “It’s a fair point. It’s not an accident.”

Respawn entertainment Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has revealed a striking piece of backstory about Star Killer base. Namely that it used to be the Jedi Planet Ilum. The planet was located in what was known as the unknown regions and was a sacred Jedi site where Padways would harvest their kyber crystals for their own lightsabers. However after the fall of the Jedi, the Empire mined the planet and used the crystals for the primary weapons on the death stars. Apparently the First Order went even farther using the planet’s core to destroy the New republic. The game is now available on Playstation 4, Xbox one and PC.

Disney Plus and Netflix are coexisting… for now. According to a report in Business Insider, Disney Plus has yet to have had a major impact on Netflix.Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson suggests he has not seen an increase in the 1700 Netflix subscribers that he has surveyed who plan to cancel Netflix in favor of Disney plus. He said quote “We have not seen an increase in the percentage of Netflix subscribers who expect to cancel Netflix in favor of Disney+,”. “In other words, most existing Netflix subscribers appear to be trending towards multiple streaming video subscriptions.” unquote So I guess the question for 2020 becomes how many streaming services are too much?

Doctor Who Showrunner Chris Chibnall is not going anywhere, in fact he’s already working on season thirteen. In an interview with radio times, Chibnall pushed back against rumors that he would be leaving the show, rumors that have been going around since 2018. He told Radio times quote Please write this verbatim: Somebody made that up, it was a lie,” Chibnall said. “It’s 100% Grade-A—shall I say nonsense, or shall I say bullshit?”“We’re already planning the next series after this series unquote

He also said that they would be taking more storytelling risks this season quote “It feels like a step up,” “It’s probably more ambitious than last year. Scale, storytelling, everything. I would say we are aiming to keep moving forward and up. There are bigger moments this year.“”Last year was a recruiting year for the show, and I think we managed to recruit some people for the show,”. “We’re building on last year. There are lots of new faces, a few old faces. There are some things trickling through, which might be important. It’s different! I think you always need to take new, big risks from a storytelling point of view.”

Doctor Who will return with season twelve in 2020.

M. Night Shyamalan’s Apple TV show hasn’t even premiered but Apple has already given the show an order for season 2. The first three episodes of Servant debuts on Apple TV this week. The show is about a young troubled couple who replace their newborn baby with a lifelike doll after their baby dies from health complications. It stars Lauren Ambrose, Nell Tiger Free and rupert Grint.

An analysis of viewer data collected and analyzed by Broadband Choices shows that viewership of The Walking Dead started after Negan’s first appearance in the season six finale Last Day on Earth. The first episode of Season Seven saw the gruesome executions of Abraham and Glenn. However it’s not all bad news Season 9 saw a noticeable uptick in the ratings and the current season  has been the highest rated season on Rotten Tomatoes.

Well everything must come to an end again and again. Mystery Science Theater 3000 has been canceled, for the thrid time in it’s history. This time by Netflix. Show host Jonah Ray revealed the bad news in a post quote “So, Netflix decided to not do another season of MST3K. We are off to Get Down in Lilyhammer while the OA helps us take it One Day at a Time. We will be in group therapy with Tuca & Bertie, Jessica Jones & Lady Dynamite. The sessions will be run by Gypsy (w/ Naomi Watts.)” Ray tweeted in a thread that name-checked the other shows that Netflix has canceled over the years. He went on to note that MST3K has always found a way “figure out how to survive,” singling out runs on Comedy Central, Syfy, Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic. “Now if only I can convince @shudder to pick us up and let us share a night with Joe Bob Briggs?” unquote MST3k has it’s known originally ran on Comedy Central for seven seasons, than on SciFi for 3 more seasons. It was revieved in 2015 by a Kickstarter campain and Netflix bought the streaming rights. Now the show is homeless again. Could it find a new home? I guess we will have to just wait and see. HBO, Apple, NBC do any of you wanna take a crack?

Finally tonight we say farewell to actor Michael J Pollard. He’s best known to sci fi fans for his guest appearance on the Star Trek episode Miri in 1966. He also acted on Lost in Space, I Spy, The Andy Griffith Show and The Lucy Show. He also played the homeless man in the Bill Murray holiday classic Scrooged and Mr. Mxyzptlk on the Superboy tv show.  He received an Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role of CW Moss in 1967’s Bonnie and Clyde. He died at the age of 80 in Los Angeles from cardiac arrest.

Well that brings us to the end of another sci fi edition of Multiverse Tonight

EPISODE 53

Tonight! Stargirl heads to the CW, Spider-Woman returns to comics and a long game of Monopoly, that and more on this comic edition of Multiverse Tonight.

Greetings and welcome to the comics edition of Multiverse Tonight. Episode 53

Can you believe we’re in December already? This year has just booked along. So do you have a favorite comic book this year? Or a favorite comic book movie? What do you think was the biggest story of the year? I guess these are the questions you ask at the end of the year? I would be interesting to tap your brain. Drop me a message on Twitter, Facebook or email multiversetonight@multiversetonight.com or just go to the contact page on the website.

DC

A billion dollars makes people do crazy things. Like make sequels. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros is going forward with a sequel to Joker, bringing back Todd Phillips to direct and cowrite alongside Scott Silver. A deal for Joaquin Phoenix hasn’t been made but he most likely will be back as well.

On top of this, Todd Phillips met with Warner Bros Chairman toby Emmerich and got permission to develop solo movies for one or two other DC Villains. So I guess the question is who does he want to do a Joker type movie about?  Any thoughts.

Geoff Johns Stargirl series is heading to the CW. According to comicbook.com the series will first debut on the DC Universe app before getting a broadcast tv premiere a day later. Stargirl follows the adventures of high school student Courtney Whitmore played by Brec Bassinger as she inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to spot the villains of the past. The series is due in 2020.

The Rock, Dwayne Johnson speaking with comic book dot com confirmed that the Justice Society of America will be introduced in the Black Adam movie. The justice society was DC’s original super hero team debuting in the 1940’s. No idea on the line up for that team .

News recently came out that producer Hiram Garcia in working out how to cross over Black Adam and Shazam. Maybe they should meet in Shazam 2?

Some more the Batman casting news. Man is this movie getting overstuffed. Director Matt reeves confirmed that John Turturro will be playing crime boss Carmine Falcone, the leader of the Falcone Crime Family in Gotham. He joins Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright and Robert Pattinson in the film, due out in June 25 of 2021. We all should expect our casting calls to be in the movie any day now.

While we’re on the subject of The Batman. This story has me kinda puzzled. Robert Pattinson in a new interview with Today had an interesting response to why he wanted to be a superhero. Pattinson responded quote”Batman’s not a superhero,” Pattinson replied. “It doesn’t count. You need to have like magical powers to be a superhero.” unquote. And apparently he said something similar to The New York Times quote  “Batman’s not a hero, though. He’s a complicated character,” Pattinson explained. “I don’t think I could ever play a real hero—there’s always got to be something a little bit wrong. I think it’s because one of my eyes is smaller than the other one.” unquote

Okay, Robert? Captain Sparkle Vampire? Batman is a hero. He’s just a dark superhero. His super powers are his brain. He can out think villians who have powers that would crush any other man. You might wanna read the source material before you defame the character. Okay Bob?

Some DC Comics news incoming Batman writer James Tynion the fourth has revealed his plans for the series when he takes it over in January. First up, Batman is going to “fix” Gotham City. James wrote in his newsletter THe Empire of the Tiny Onion quote  “He has just faced tremendous failure in the last year of story,” Tynion wrote, referring to the current “City of Bane” arc. “He lost his City, and lost his way… But now that he’s back, he has an almost manic intensity. He is going to fix things. He’s going to make it so nobody like Bane can ever do this to the city again.” unquote

He will also keep the romance between Bruce and Catwoman going quote “With Selina on his arm, the ‘Playboy’ Bruce is dead,” Tynion continues. “Every waking minute is dedicated to the rebuild of Gotham City, both as Bruce Wayne as Batman. He is in control of every room he enters, and people are a little frightened of him. He is one of the richest people in the world, and he has experienced so much loss. But it’s clear he’s trying to make the city better. People admire him, because most people in his shoes would have left Gotham a long time ago.” unquote

However Tynion does say that the comic going forward will be an action horror superhero comic where the villains and Batman will be frightening quote “The villains of Gotham fear him, and he is going to take that fear and wield it like a weapon to get his city back under control,” writes Tynion. “Batman doesn’t just show up in broad daylight to scare his villains, he uses tricks and shadows, and voice modulation to make it seem like he can be anywhere and everywhere at once.” unquote He also compared Batman being like Michael Myers to the villains of Gotham.

His run will have quote three big stories” that will also affect the other Bat titles and will have a rotating art team. Tony S Daniel, Guillem March and another unnamed artist.

His run on Batman begins January eighth with issue eighty six.

DC has announced a new Birds of Prey Giant will be released on January twenty-second , 2020. This special will come out just sixteen days before Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of ONe Harley Quinn comes out in theaters.

Marvel

A near mint copy of Marvel Comics Number One from 1939, the best copy of the comic in existence sold at auction for 1.26 million dollars at a public auction of vintage comics and comic book art held by Heritage Auctions in Dallas Texas on November twenty first. This copy was rated by the CGC at a 9.4. This comic also set a world record as the most expensive marvel comic book ever sold at auction. It was also the most expensive comic ever sold by Heritage auctions.

Spider-Woman is getting a new comic series, starting this March. The comic will be written by Karla Pancheco with art by Pere Perez. Jessica Drew aka Spider Woman recently came back to prominence after becoming a member of Marvel’s new Strikeforce team. Karala Pacheco is excited to tackle the character saying in a release quote I love Spider-Woman, and I’m incredibly excited to share this series with both new and old Jessica Drew fans alike. This is big, can’t miss, over-the-top action, some very surprising ‘venom blasts from the pasts,’ and also a TON of helicopter explosions. It’s a super fun adventure with a lot of twists and turns…and seriously, so many helicopter explosions. We’re taking Jess bigger and badder than she’s ever been before, and I can’t wait for readers to see what we’ve cooked up. Unquote

New Ultraman comics are coming. Marvel and Tsuburaya Productions are teaming up for a series of new comics and graphic novels based on the Japanese anime series. The partnership was announced at the Tokyo Comic Con and was teased with art on Ultraman by artist Alex Ross. Marvel editor in chief CB Cebulski said in the press release quote “As one of the world’s most popular franchises, Ultraman has brought together some of the most passionate fandoms in pop culture today, and we can’t wait to bring his story to even more fans around the globe…Like Marvel, Ultraman captivated generations by telling spectacular stories grounded in the real world, and it continues to be a beloved classic through its television shows, movies, toys, games, comics, and more. We are so thrilled to introduce new chapters to the Ultraman Multiverse next year.” unquote

Details about the new releases weren’t forthcoming, so we will have to wait for a later date to learn more.

In an interview with GQ, Tim Blake Nelson revealed that The Incredible Hulk movie would have been the setup for The Leader to appear in three MCU films. Quote “I got called down to the lobby of the Mercer Hotel to meet Louis Leterrier and Gale Ann Hurd, who’s producer,” Nelson recalls to GQ. “They said, ‘We want you to play this science character,” and I’d read the script. He was a wildly eccentric guy, mainly in the second half of the movie.” “I thought that was interesting because I haven’t been in one of these movies before and they said, ‘Well, you’re going to become the villain in the next movie, so you’ll basically be signing up for three movies and you’re going to be this character called The Leader.’ And I thought ‘Oh my God, this is fantastic.'” unquote Unfortunately the film didn’t do well enough to get a sequel and ever since the Hulk has been a team-up character in other superhero’s movies.

Tim Miller is now talking about his split from Deadpool over creative differences he had with star and producer Ryan Reynolds. He told KCRW’s The Business podcast quote “It became clear that Ryan wanted to be in control of the franchise,”  “You can work that way as a director, quite successfully, but I can’t. I don’t mind having a debate, but if I can’t win, I don’t want to play. And I don’t think you can negotiate every creative decision, there’s too many to make. So Ryan’s the face of the franchise, and he was the most important component of that, by far. So if he decides he wants to control it, then he’s going to control it.”“I’ve always been pretty good at the ‘moving on’ thing. I care deeply, and then you get to this point where you’ve gotta make a decision, and I’m pretty good about putting it in my rearview mirror. We had a meeting at Fox, and the writing was on the wall, so I said, ‘I get it. I’ll quit, and you guys can do what you need to do.’” unquote  Miller wanted more of a stylized sequel while Reynolds wanted to focus on the comedy . Deadpool 2 did quite well without Tim Miller, making 785 million at the box office.

Venom 2 is starting filming under director Andy Serkis. Venom 2 will see the return also of Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady. Venom 2 will be out October second, 2020.

The Maxx will be made into a live action project courtesy of Channing Tatum’s Free Association and Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment. The Maxx is a character created by writer and artist Sam Keith and follows the adventures of a masked hero who protects the Jungle Queen in an otherworldly realm called the Outback, however in our world he resembles a homeless man with a mask, who’s mutterings and ramblings are just dismissed as mental illness. The Ma was first published by Image Comics back in 1993. And was brought to MTV in 1995 as part of the Oddities animation block.

Ever feel like a game of Monopoly can go on forever. Well now Hasbro has a version that will. The Monopoly: Longest Game Ever edition will be a test of your endurance. The game features 66 properties, three for each location and the game doesn’t end until someone owns all of them. Also, there is only one die and bankruptcy won’t end the game as the rules allow players to rip the bills in half along the dotted line. If you want to torture yourself and friends, you can find it on Amazon right now.

Christina Miller, president of Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, turner Classic Movies and Boomerang will be leaving Warner Media at the end of the year. Miller in a statement said quote“This is not a decision I came to lightly,” “It’s one of the hardest I’ve had to make in my career. Ultimately, it feels like the right time for me to leave and take a little time to think about what comes next, but I do so, feeling immensely proud of the work we’ve done together and so grateful for the experience.”

Miller has led the division for the past five years and is the latest WarnerMedia exec to hit the exit door since AT&T bought Time Warner.

Show Notes: Episode 50:Deal with Star Wars Diversity and Episode 51: Warner Bros. goes Blue

Tonight! A Discovery star gets engaged, Rian Johnson has words for diversity haters,  and Disney Plus is doing just fine on this fiftieth edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to the scifi edition of Multiverse Tonight.

Episode fifty, pretty snazzy. I thank all of you watching and listening.

So, have you started watching Disney Plus? What was the first thing you started watching? Probably the Mandalorian. Not me. I watched The Black Hole. Pretty decent sci fi movie for the era. It does what a lot of those movies did in the seventies. Starts with an overture over a black screen before starting the scene like 2001 A Space Odyssey and Star Trek The Motion Picture. It has sort of a draw your own conclusion type of ending. Wonder why Disney hasn’t considered rebooting it?

Anyway, I think Disney Plus is pretty decent for the price, but I do think they need to add a last watched feature to the starting page. Some of us don’t sit down and watch things from beginning to end. I tend to treat things i stream like books, I pick it up, watch it for a while, then put it down.

Anyway let’s get to the news…

Star Trek

The original Star Trek Animated Series will be leaving Netflix in December. According to the info page for the show on Netflix it’s quote available until 12/01/2019. This will be the first Star Trek show to no longer be available on Netflix. Most likely CBS will be bringing it to CBS All Access and the show is also available on Amazon Prime.  Star Trek The Animated Series ran for 22 episodes and for many fans acts as Season Four of the original series. It was also the first Trek series to win an emmy, as it received the Emmy for Outstanding Entertainment Children’s Series in 1975.

While we’re on the subject of Trek animated series, it’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything about the new one. Star Trek Lower Decks is due out next year and comic book dot com talked with voice actor Jack Quaid, who will play Ensign Brad Boimler on the show. Quote “We’re in the middle of recording that now. To get to be a part of that world, in any way, is so cool. That show is just, it’s very different from Harvey Girls. It’s way more adult, but it’s so hilarious and surprisingly sweet and very Trek. Fans of Star Trek will get little inferences and things that we sprinkled throughout the show, but also, I think it’s very accessible for people who don’t know a ton of lore as well. It’s just like a fun show in space.” unquote. Harvey Girls Forever was the actors first voice acting role.

Lower Decks is expected to arrive sometime in 2020.

Congratulations are in order to Star Trek Discovery star Anthony Rapp who tweeted the happy news that he is now engaged to fellow actor Kenneth Mitchell, who has portrayed several Klingon characters on the series. Rapp tweeted quote “So something happened tonight,” “I asked Ken if he would marry me and he said yes. I am so very happy and I’m so very thrilled to share this news.” Rapp plays the first openly gay series regular in a Star Trek show.

Congratulations to the happy couple, Discovery returns in 2020 and season two is now out on Bluray and DVD.

Discovery actor  and comedian Tig Notaro recently spoke with Space dot com. About being in sci fi roles in Discovery and the sci fi movie Lucy in the Sky, she said that she didn’t seek out these sci fi roles but felt quote “…open to that world. “It’s very different,” “I like it, I like being a recurring role on “Star Trek” … I’m not looking to become a full cast member but I enjoy the world, and I enjoy the cast and crew, and I think what I have going on is kind of perfect.” unquote She was a fan of the original series as a child saying quote “I did follow ‘Star Trek’ when I was a child, the original series … obviously I’m more familiar with Discovery now, but I love being a part of it, if just simply for the ability to tell people I am on ‘Star Trek,’ it’s really fun to be able to say that.”  unquote

She also told space dot com that she might enjoy playing characters that work in space, she’s not sure that she would want to go to space herself. Saying quote “I think it’s really exciting and terrifying,” “If I could be in space, I would like to just be teleported; I don’t know that I would want that actually takeoff and journey to outer space.”

“I was just talking to my wife about that; she has absolutely no interest in being in outer space. I don’t think were gonna run into ‘should we go, should we not go?'” “I would bring my sons. I really think they would be interested.”

“It’s fun, I’m proud to be a part of it,” “My sons, they think I actually work in space because whenever I go off to Toronto to film ‘Star Trek,’ I always tell them I have to go work on the space rocket “

Would you like a small statue of Captain Spock in your home? Sideshow and Darkside Collectibles Studio are set to release a one to three scale museum statue of Captain Spock as seen in Star Trek II The Wrath of Kahn. The statue is the spitting image of Lenord Nimoy as his iconic character circa 1982.. It’s 25 inches tall in the iconic monster maroon Starfleet uniform. The statue is made in polystone resin with life like skin details and is limited and individually numbered. Orders are being taken now and it will whip in the fourth quarter of  2020. But be prepared to open your wallet wide, it’ll cost you $1299 or $146.13 a month on a payment plan.

Star Wars

Some people took issues with Star Wars The Last Jedi and the amount of diversity in the casting. Because how dare a galaxy far far away has more than one woman and more than one person of color in any kind of prominent role. If this is you, than Rian Johnson has some strong words for you. While speaking at a live event for WIRED while promoting his new movie Knives Out with Chris Evans, he said quote “If someone’s responding to diversity negatively, f— ’em,” Chris  Evans responded to that quote “If anyone didn’t like the movie, I’m not saying that’s why they didn’t like it… It wasn’t surprising at all to me, I grew up as a Star Wars fan. And I grew up- I was in my twenties when the prequels came out and this whole idea that it’s all been sunshine and roses and suddenly everybody’s yelling at each other is baffling to me.” Rian than added quote “And I feel like people care deeply about Star Wars, and every single person has a slightly different version of what they think Star Wars is. And so much of the fun of it is arguing about it. Since we were kids, right? On the playground, you’re yelling at your friends about who would win in a fight… It’s part and parcel about the passion of being a Star Wars fan.”  Unquote Maybe we should take a page from Frozen and Let it Go?

With the Rise of Skywalker on the way, there’s sure to be more trolls bashing Naomi Ackie, who’s in the movie as a character named Jannah. She however did get some advice about it from someone who got bashed alot Kelly Marie tran. Kelly gave the new Star Wars actor some advice. Naomi shared that advice with Metro quote “I think watching the experience of Kelly Marie Tran and talking to her, I got a lot of inspiration from her about how to grow a thicker skin when it comes to people’s opinions of not just your work, [also] who you are,” “There’s a difference. That’s a challenge but I’m fired up. I feel good about it ultimately.”  unquote

The ramp up for The Rise of Skywalker is in high gear. Daisy Ridley talking with Adoro Cinema about a scene that left her and the crew visibly moved. Quote “There was a scene that touched me a lot,” Ridley told Adoro Cinema. “It was our last day shooting in Jordan and the natural light was fading. And it was so exciting. It was just a short scene, we filmed very fast, but the crew was shaken in a way I had not seen before. And I thought, ‘My God, if this is people’s immediate reaction when the scene isn’t even ready, imagine what it will be like to see it in the movies, with the John Williams soundtrack and all that.’” unquote As to what that scene was I guess we’ll have to wait however, you remember the scene from the trailer with her in dark robes and a double bladed red lightsaber, Daisy did discuss that scene saying quote “That scene was filmed in England in November,” “There were huge water cannons and it was really, really cold. Everybody literally soaked. It was hard, but it was also amazing because the scene caught the immediacy of the reaction.” unquote

Carrie Fisher’s death was heartbreaking. But what might be even more heartbreaking was the plan for Leia that was supposed to occur in the Rise of Skywalker. According to Carrie’s brother Todd Fisher, she was to go full Jedi. Todd, speaking with Yahoo Entertainment said quote “She was going to be the big payoff in this final film,”“That’s what the intent was. She was going to be the last Jedi, so to speak… People used to say to me, ‘Why is it that Carrie never gets a lightsaber and chops up some bad guys?’” unquote A final storyline for Leia was created for the final movie in the Skywalker saga using deleted scenes from The Force Awakens. The Rise of Skywalker comes out in a month.

Star Wars Obi Wan Kenobi Writer Hossein Amini thinks that making a series instead of a movie was the right idea. Amini talked with Discussing Film about the upcoming series. Quote “I think because of what we were speaking about before, the situation is so complex both for him personally and in a way, the state of the galaxy, you sort of need time to explore it and to be honest there are loads of other stories within that period as well, it’s quite a few years,” “There is so much going on between [Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope] that hasn’t been explored. The idea of being able to go into a character journey plus the politics and plus all the vastness of the empire and what’s going on is exciting just because it feels like a proper period of history and sometimes that is hard to do in two hours. Sometimes with two-hour movies there is always an imperative for the action and the plot to move particularly fast and quickly and to go from action sequence to action sequence and there are many more aspects to storytelling that I find interesting.” unquote

No word yet on when the series will come to Disney Plus.

Disney CEO Bob Iger on the latest investor earnings call says that a lot of guests are holding off on visiting the Disneyland and Disney World until the Galaxy’s Edge is fully opened. There is one more e-ticket attraction coming to the Star Wars themed attraction, Star Wars Rise of the Resistance. It will open up in December at Disney World and on January seventeenth at DisneyLand. However even with the lower attendance at the parks it’s still been a good year at the Disney Parks. They’ve seen an eight percent increase in revenue.

Speaking of Mr. Iger, on that same call he announced that the Star Wars films will be taking a little break with Iger saying that their current thinking is that Marvel and Star Wars are more than just movie franchises.  Of course, it’s not like they’re gonna stop making content, there are 3 Star Wars series in production.

Even before the launch of Disney Plus, Disney was doing quite well for itself. In its fourth quarter earnings call the studio reported total revenue of 19.1 billion exceeding analysts estimates of 19.04 billion. Toy Story 4 and Aladdin did well for the studio  and even losses on it’s Fox inherited films like Ad Astra, the art of racing in the rain and Dark Phoenix were partially offset by income from tv and streaming. The stock closed up after the launch of Disney Plus. By the way, I must note that I hold a little piece of stock in Disney.

Can you believe we’re already in the end of November? Just a short hop , skip and a jump to the end of the year. At least we have some new Rick and Morty to watch.

Marvel

Disney Plus’ She-Hulk has found a new writer in Rick and Morty writer Jessica Gao. Jessica won an Emmy for writing the Pickle Rick episode. This is the first development for the show since it was announced at D23. This comes after the news that Jeremy Slater, who developed THe Umbrella Academy for Netflix will be overseeing the Moon Knight series. Could the hiring of Jessica Gao show that She-Hulk will have or of a humorous bent?

Marvel head Kevin Fiege in an interview with Bloomberg news told the outlet that the Disney Plus Loki series will directly tie into doctor Strange and the multiverse of madness. It;s not the only Disney Plus series to tie into the movie as WandaVision will as well. The six episode Loki series won’t be out until 2021.

Marvel studios might be doing well today. But the recession almost killed it before it got started. In order for Marvel Studios to get off the ground, in 2005, MarveI needed a huge loan. It got 525 million from Merrill Lynch. It was good timing, in 2008, the great recession happened and that money would have dried up. Talking with The Hollywood reporter’s Scott Feinberg , Kevni Fiege confirms the fact that Merrill Lynch wouldn’t have been able to provide that funding saying quote “That’s a good question I hadn’t thought about. We wouldn’t have gotten the loan afterwards, you’re probably right,” unquote . why? Simple. Merrill Lynch was a casualty of the recession after losing 51.8 billion in the subprime mortgage catastrophe. The company ended up being sold off to Bank of America.

Now here we are almost a decade and a half later and Marvel has billions of dollars.

Zachary Levi was almost Starlord.James Gunn, the maker of the Gaurdians of the Galaxy movies confirmed the fact during a q and a on instagram stories.  According to Mr. Gunns answer to the question about Zacary Levi being considered, James Gunn wrote quote “Yes. And he was amazing,“”So when Peter Safran, the producer of Shazam, came to me asking about who would be good as the character I strongly suggested Zach. I’ve been told by Peter and the DC folks that’s what got the ball rolling. But I think it was #zacharylevi’s immense talent that did that.”

Levi responded to the post on his Instagram saying quote”And brother, it means the absolute world,” “Thanks for seeing that in me, and sharing that conviction with others. It helped literally change my life. I hope we get to work together at some point soon.” unquote

In another universe, it was so. Anyone up for universe hoping?

The Tokyo  burglar nicknamed The Ame-zing Spider Man may have been caught. According to the site FNN.jp, a Mr. Hiroki Horiguchi was arrested on November first for allegedly breaking into a rooftop office in the Tokyo neighborhood of Shinjuku. The 26 year old man allegedly than broke a window, got in and got out with 66,000 yen which is approximately six hundred five dollars american.

Because of the techniques and methods used, they thought that he has the serial burglar dubbed the Ame-szing Spiderman. The burglar had a thing for scaling buildings to get access to his targets. The reason he was called ame-zing is this. All the robberies took place at night that a rainstorm or typhoon took place. Ame is japanese for rain.. The Ame-zing Spider Man is suspected of at least a dozen burglaries.

California is still suffering from fires if you’ll remember my interview with Orville Producer Tom Costantino, that interview had been delayed from the week before due to a fire that caused his family to be under a voluntary evacuation order. Now Deadline reports that the warner Bros lot had to be evacuated as a precautionary measure after a small brush fire broke out in the hollyWood Hills near the studio.

The Barham fire started near 3694 North Barham Blvd. Which is just about a half mile from the

Warners studio lot, around 152 in the afternoon of  Saturday November 2nd. Luckily by 510 pm that day the Los angeles fire department reported that forward progress had been stopped. By that point the fire had burned 34 acres in the hills between Burbank and Universal City.

Speaking of Warner Bros, the studio has announced that it’s updating its logo. The logo is a now elongated blue shield with the letters WB on it.  It harkens back to how the logo looked in the 1930’s. The new logo will begin appearing on the companies productions starting in early 2020. If you’d like to look at all the different variations on the wb logo I’ll have a link to a site that has a detailed history of the different permutations of the iconic logo.http://annyas.com/screenshots/warner-bros-logo/

We got some Batman casting news. First off The Batman director Matt Reeves confirmed on twitter that Andy Serkis will play the role of Alfred Pennyworth. He joins Robbert Pattinson has Batman, Jeffery Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, newcomer Jayme Lawson will be playing a new character named Bella who is a grassroots political candidate running for office …or is that a ruse and  she’s playing Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl and Paul Dano from There Will be Blood has been cast as Edward Nashton aka The Riddler

It looks like it’s truly the end of the line for Batman’s father figure slash butler. Alfred Pennyworth. DC has confirmed that he was indeed killed by Bane. His death will be explored in Batman: Pennyworth R.I.P. a new one shot by James Tynion the fourth and Peter J Tomasi with art by Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira. Here’ s the description quote “Alfred Pennyworth served the Wayne family for decades—even through the terrible loss of the Dark Knight’s parents. His shocking death at the hands of Bane is the only event that could possibly compare to that fateful night in Crime Alley, and it leaves Bruce at a similar crossroads. If Alfred was the glue that held the Bat-Family together, how will Batman deal with that all falling apart? And if the Caped Crusader is to be truly alone, he might either hang that cape up once and for all…or double down and carry on with this vengeful quest forever.

Batman: Pennyworth R.I.P. celebrates the life of one of the most important people in the history of Gotham City, while also addressing questions about what’s next.” The issue comes out on February 12th, 2020.

So you’re watching Disney Plus and your bring up the Simpsons and are dismayed that they’re being presented not in their original aspect ratio of 4:3 but in the zoomed in 16:9 ratio. Well you’re cries of anguish has been heard. Disney in a statement said quote “We presented “The Simpsons” in 16:9 aspect ratio at launch in order to guarantee visual quality and consistency across all 30 seasons. Over time, Disney+ will roll out new features and additional viewing options. As part of this, in early 2020, Disney+ will make the first 19 seasons (and some episodes from Season 20) of “The Simpsons” available in their original 4:3 aspect ratio, giving subscribers a choice of how they prefer to view the popular series.” unquote During season 20 was when the show went to the 16:9 aspect ratio of today.

We talked a few minutes ago about how Warner Bros has looked to the past to update their logo. Now Deadline reports that Warners is bringing back Rin Tin Tin, the German Shepard that was credited with saving the studio in the 1920’s.

Matt Lieberman, who wrote the upcoming animated movie Scoob and the animated Addams Family movie will be writing the new movie. The movie will be made with Andrew Lazar’s Mad Chance productions along with rights holders Sasha Jenson and Jeff Miller. Apparently the plan is to make the dog the John Wick of dogs. A hero elite military dog on a covert mission to stop a large scale attack. So if John Wick saw the dog got killed, Does Rin Tin Tins humans get killed?

HOcus Pocus 2…is probably something we don’t need. However since it’s gonna get made let’s check in on where it is. The Hollywood Reporter asked Sarah Jessica Parker about it. Asking if she knows anything, she said quote No, I don’t know. There has never been a conversation ever in our lives. Someone just asked me on Instagram, and I said: “We all said we’d love to someday.” But that’s the extent of the conversation. I’ve been asked so much recently about this — it’s a seasonal question… it’s appropriate! Unquote The reporter than added an addendum to the answer in the article quote [When asked, “Any chance of a sequel?” last week on Instagram, Parker responded: “We have all said yes. Now we wait.”] unquote
