Now let’s get on with the show.

We start with Star Trek news.

Star Trek Discovery is winding down for the season and at a panel at WonderCon this past weekend in Anaheim, California. They had a “Star Trek: Discovery Inside the Visual Effects” panel. On the dias was director and executive producer Olatunde Osunsanmi, visual effects supervisors Jason Zimmerman and Ante Dekovic, and previsualization supervisor Stephen Pavelski. They talked about the challenges they faced this season such as the red angel which according to Osunsanmi  quote The Red Angel took so many different departments to pull together correctly with costume and props. For VFX, from when Alex [Kurtzman] first came up with the idea and it was an 18-week build to build it. And the VFX has to build a full CG character of that. We have to make sure it fits on the character it has to go on. And then the VFX has to make sure it does all these wondrous things it has to do and make it look real, and legit. I think that—at least for us on the production side—took the most time. I can remember a lot of 1:00 AM phone calls with [Jason Zimmerman]. Unquote

Also discussed was the challenging asteroid sequence in the season premiere, apparently it was Alex Kurtzman’s idea and that the started on it during the finish up on season one. And even though it was a huge effort  Zimmerman joked quote

We did that asteroid sequence and it was a massive CG undertaking, and I think Alex’s favorite thing was probably making Linus blink. He laughs every time. Unquote

They also discussed how they tried to make sure the effects didn’t over shine the story. Jason Zimmerman said quote Obviously it is served by technology, which is blisteringly fast. So, we are going to continue to grow and be able to do better versions of CG people where you are not going to be able to tell at some point. But, the one thing we can’t do with visual effects is write the story and make the story. So, it is still our job – regardless of how flashy we can get – that we have to tell the story. That is why we have to work with production and everyone else. We can make some really flashy stuff, but if at the end of the day it doesn’t tell a Star Trek story, then it doesn’t do anybody good. Unquote

A new ad from the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention features the story of Leonard Nimoy.the ad, part of their “Tips From Former Smokers” campaign. Showcases stories of people who have suffered from smoking-related illnesses, and the devastating impact of these illnesses on smokers’ families. The ad features Susan Nimoy, wife of Leonard Nimoy.  Let’s watch,

Space Jam 2…you don’t know how much I wanna walk away right there, has added Sonequa Martin Green to the cast. She will be playing Lebron James wife. Not much is known about the movie, but it’s expected that Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Joel Embiid, Kawhi Leonard, James Harden, and Giannis Antetokounmpo will be teaming up with the Loney Toons against something. The film will be directed by Terence Nance, and produced by Black Panther director Ryan Coogler. And will be out in July of 2021.

Star Trek fans in Ireland want to look up to Chief Miles O’Brien. Alex Smyth of Dublin has launched a petition to put a statue of the Deep Space Nine Chief of Operations somewhere in the city of Dublin. Miles O’Brien was first introduced as a recurring character on Star Trek the Next Generation back in season one of the show, He eventually got a name, a wife and a new job on Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Where he usually found himselfs being tortured in one way or another. The petition on ipetitions dot come already has 2,445 signatures. If you’d like to sign, we will have a link to it in our show notes. https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/build-a-statue-of-star-treks-chief-miles-obrien

Dayton Ward interview

Star Wars

We start Star Wars news with new about Star Wars: The Mandalorian, the series that will air on Disney plus has wrapped production and according to a Lucasfilm source to HN Entertainment, a second season is already looking pretty likely.

The series is being showrun by Jon Favreau and stars Pedro Pascal as The Mandalorian. It’s expected to debut in the fall when Disney Plus does.

Werner Herzog has revealed a little more about his new role in The Mandalorian. The Filmmaker and actor revealed to Indiewire that quote “Now this is not a secret anymore, a small part, real small part, in The Mandalorian, the Star Wars sequel or whatever you call it. I like to do it because I know I’m good on screen, but only if I have to play a real villain,”

Star Wars Celebration isa few days away and Star Wars dot com has gotten a glimpse of a massive mural that will be unveiled at the fan fest.  The mural from artists Doug Chiang and Jason Palmer will feature images from Episodes 1 through 9, the spinoff films and animated series Doug Chiang told Star Wars dot com that I wanted the scale to be theatrical,” “I felt it was important to make the mural as large as possible to mirror the cinematic experience. At 10-feet-tall and 88-feet-long, it’ll be unlike anything we’ve done before.” The idea according to Chiang came from Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy saying that quote “She asked if we could create a piece of art that would encapsulate the entire Star Wars saga, visually representing the complete stories of Star Wars through art.

Star Wars Celebration begins on April eleventh. For news from their check out Scifi4me’s Salacious Crumbs. They’ll have their host Mackenna their for the event.

Keri Russell dropped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and did reveal that she has quote the coolest unquote costume in the film. Keeping silent has been difficult for her and her son was the first to know that she got the job quote “I got off the phone and I was like, ‘Hahaha, wait. River’ — my 11-year-old — ‘You can’t tell any of your friends, but I’m doing a really cool project. It’s Star Wars,'” Unquote Asked if she has an idea of what the title is, she said that she had no idea.

Marvel News

One last cameo. That’s apparently all that’s left for Stan Lee according to Director Joe russo,Stan did record several cameos prior to his passing. According to Joe Russo promoting Endgame in India said quote “I believe that his final cameo is in Endgame. I don’t remember if he was well enough to do the cameo in Spider-Man [Far From Home],” “But it was incredible to work with him.”, “I grew up on his comic books. Stan Lee was an idol of mine as a kid. To be able to have the opportunity to not only to work under the material he created but to work with him is a childhood dream come true.”  Stan has appeared in all 21 Marvel Studios productions.

Now Stan not only did cameos in the Marvel Studios Produced films, but also in those produced by other studios, including Fox. So an appearance by Stan in the latest X-Men film Dark Phoenix was expected, but in an interview with Cinemablend, X-Men producer Hutch Parker and director Simon Kinberg they confirmed that no cameo will be in the movie. The revealed that instead they will have a tribute to him in the film. Quote “We do have some tribute to him, and it’s something that obviously we weren’t thinking about when we were making the movie because he was still very much alive,” “And he’s been such a huge part of making these films over the years. He’s had cameos; he’s had input into the process of making them.”

And speaking of Dark Phoenix, Alexandra Shipp, who plays Storm says that the film has a different tone from previous installments. Speaking with comicbook dot com at Wondercon Shipp said quote “I love the fashion of it, I love the colors.” “When we first started Apocalypse, it was like walking onto a comic book. You felt like you were walking into a comic book, and what I love about Dark Phoenix is that, it is way more gritty. I think it affects you in a way more visceral way because it’s not a comic vibe. It’s very real, it’s very raw, and it was scary at times. It’s scary to think that someone you love is losing their mind.” According to Hutch Parker talking with comicbook.com, this change of tone was Simon Kinberg decision. Quote“I mean the decision here, it was really Simon [Kinberg]’s decision was to tell the Dark Phoenix story but really tell it as Jean’s story. So that was first and foremost. So it’s a much more thorough investigation of that saga of the story at that heart of the saga and much truer to Jean as a character. I think you’re right that one of the challenges was how do we balance what is in the comics in the galactic and intergalactic nature of that storyline with wanting to stay more Earth centric. And you know, we obviously made the decision to include some of that, but to keep it rooted in and around the characters we’ve come to know and love within the X-Men.”Unquote  Dark Phoenix will arrive in theaters on June 7th.

Marvel’s Black Panther has racked up some more awards, this time at the NAACP Image Awards. Black Panther racked up the awards for Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a motion picture , Outstanding Motion Picture and Chadwick Boseman won Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture, while Michael B Jordan walked away with Outstanding Supporting Actor. Danai Gurira won Outstanding Supporting Actress and Letitia Wright got Outstanding Breakthrough Performance in a motion picture. Ryan Coogler was awarded the award for Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture. And Coogler and Joe Robert Cole got Outstanding writing in a motion picture. The soundtrack also got some love, Kendrick Lamar was awarded Outstanding Soundtrack/Compilation and Lamar and SZA won Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration for All The Stars.

Well one of the highlights of my trip to Planet Comicon was a visit to the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to see Captain Marvel. Well your welcome Marvel. I just contributed to Captain Marvel breaking the 1 billion dollar mark at the global box office. In the US, the film has made about 360 million and the overseas take comes out to just over 645 million. Bringing the worldwide total to one billion four million plus dollars. That’s an awesome amount for 4 weeks.

So you’ve probably got your tickets for Avengers: Endgame, I hope you picked a theater with comfortable seats cause you’re gonna be in them for awhile. The movie runs just over three hours and Co-director Joe Russo addressed the length during an interview with Box Office Pro quote “We’re still looking at a similar time [approximately three hours]. This one’s been very specific in its run time. It really hasn’t changed since we executed the first cut of the film,” “Even though we’ve shot a lot of footage between now and then, we’ve swapped things out and the water keeps rising to the same level because the story’s so dense. We have so many characters that we’re working with again that require that kind of run time.” unquote In other words, when you have a dozen or more characters that all need screen time, you’re length is gonna get long.

We know have a definitive idea of who was dusted after the Snap in Infinity War. Marvel released a series of posters featuring characters that survived and didn’t. Among the survivors  when Endgame picks up are Iron Man , Black Widow , Captain Marvel , Happy Hogan , Wong, Okoye , Ant-Man, Nebula, Rocket Raccoon , Hawkeye , Pepper Potts, Bruce Banner , Captain America , Thor, and War Machine . Among the Fallen are Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch , Gamora, Mantis, Loki, Nick Fury, Vision , Bucky Barnes , Drax), Falcon , Groot, Wasp , Shuri, Spider-Man , and Star-Lord . So plan your movie cosplay accordingly.

Well out with the old and in with the new members of the MCU. It looks like Angelina Jolie might be showing up in the next phase of Marvel movie. The actress is in negotiation to star in The Eternals. The Eternals were created by Jack Kirby and has an expansive story that covers thousands of MCU galactic history. The film will be directed by Chloe Zhao. No word on what part Jolie is going for. It could be either Sersi, thena or Elysisus, but it is expected to hit screens sometime in 2020.

The Hollywood reporter also reports that Kumail Nanjiani is also in talks to join The Eternals.

Season two of Cloak and Dagger returns to Freeform this month and they’ll be a time jump from where the characters were in the first season. Season two starts eight months later after ty was forced to be on the run, hiding out in an abandoned church. . In an interview with CBR star Aubrey Joseph said quote With Season 1, we literally watched them figure out how to maneuver with these powers. So Season 2, from the jump, you see them become these badass superheroes, you know? It still takes time, obviously. They’re young and they are still learning, but — specifically for Ty — eight months in a church by yourself, it’s a lot of time on your hands to practice your powers, obviously. So I think it will be worth the wait, to see that. Unquote. This is also handy as we get the see Cloak and Daggers powers expanded.

And just when you thought Agents of Shields seventh season was it’s last…maybe think again. Jeph Loeb in a panel at Wonder Con said that quote “By the time you get to May 10th you will have nothing better to do than to watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. knowing how the Avengers story ended in Endgame. So that should tell you, particularly when you saw today the One Year Later.” Co-showrunner Maurissa Tancharoen explained,“We’re not ending” in response to season 7 being the show’s last. “We always think we’re going to end each season and being renewed is a bonus each year.”  So do you think this will be the end?

DC News

It’s been over a year and a half since Justice League came out. You might remember that during reshoots, Henry Cavill was in the midst of shooting the new Mission Impossible movie and sporting a mustache. In order to cover up Superman’s unexpected lip hair, the production had to go to lengths to cover it up causing the fakest looking upper lip area ever. Now ReelAnarchy has debuted a photo from the set showing Cavill sporting the mustache. Frankly, I think they shouldn’t have removed it, they should have added a beard. It would have made more sense with the “Death of Superman” sort of story they were trying to tell. https://twitter.com/Pop_Cult_Pod/status/1112850011983888384/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1112850011983888384&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fcomicbook.com%2Fdc%2F2019%2F04%2F01%2Fjustice-league-movie-2017-superman-mustache-reshoots-henry-cavill%2F

Back in 2009, The Dark Knight was not nominated for The Best Picture Oscar. This has been seen by some as one of the greatest snubs in awards history. However it’s snubbing encouraged the Academy to widen the field the next year to 10.  At a Q&A session following an IMAX screening of The Dark Knight on March 30th in LA in honor of Batman’s 80th Anniversary. When asked about it, Nolan responded with quote “Yeah, which is a kind of cool consolation prize, I guess,” The IMAX screening tour will continue this month with screenings in New York, San Francisco, Toronto and Indianapolis.

We keep getting new information about James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, and it looks like Jai Courtney will be returning to the role of Captain Boomerang, Margot Robbie will be back as Harley Quinn and Viola Davis will be back as Amanda Waller. We also have word from Variety that Idris Elba will be playing  a new character that will be replacing Deadshot. For a film that’s not a sequel, it sure seems like a sequel and not a reboot.

80 years of DC Comics will now be at your fingertips as DC Comics will be releasing their creative output in a new feature to the DC Universe streaming service. DC universe senior Vice President and General Manager Sam Ades said at Wondercon quote “From the time DC Universe launched last year, our fans have loved the comic experience and have asked us for just one thing – more! The expansion to thousands of titles in January 2019 was a first step in our goal to deliver on that request, to provide DC Universe members full access to the pantheon of DC’s epic Super Hero stories,” “We’re thrilled to respond to our fans yet again with the incredible value of the ultimate DC digital comics library.” The service costs $7.99 a month. With all the new shows their adding, this service is looking better all the time.

The premiere of Swamp Thing has been announced, the new series made for the DC Universe service will debut on May 31st.  Here’s a synopsis:When CDC researcher Abby Arcane returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland — only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous — and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all. The series stars Jennifer Beals, Andy Bean, Virginia Madsen, and more.

Speaking of Swamp Thing, here’s a little trivia for you Constantine first appeared in The Saga of Swamp Thing #37 back in 1985. Well actor Matt Ryan has revealed that he wants John Constantine to show up in the new series. Ryan commented on this during a panel at Wizard World Cleveland saying quote “John Constantine was born in Swamp Thing. Eventually, he has to be on Swamp Thing, and I just hope it’s me”

Staying with DC Universe news, an image has surfaced of star Brec Bassinger as Stargirl, this looks to be a costume similar to the one the character wears in the comic, Brec is shown holding the Star Rod as well. And you can see Stripes leg in the background behind her. The new series should be out in 2020. https://twitter.com/TheDCUniverse/status/1111798952985137152/photo/1

So how did the other Captain Marvel, Shazam! Do at the box office this week? For opening weekend, it made 56.8 million in the United States and on the foreign box ofice it made 102. 3 million for a worldwide box office total of 159,130,326. I opened at number one. Pretty good for the big red cheese.

Arrow’s next season will be it’s last and Arrow star Emily Bett Rickards has announced her departure from the series prior to this next last season. Rickards plays Felicity Smoak, a role that debuted in 2012. She made the announcement in a letter on Instagram quote “The time has come to talk of many memes. Of bows and arrows and superheroes and Olicity and Queens

And why TGA is so damn hot

And yes, canaries need more scenes… But wait just one minute

before we go and do all that

For this makes me out of breath

To have this not small chat

Felicity and I

are a very tight two

But after one through seven

we will be saying goodbye to you

I thank you all for the time we’ve shared

The elevators we have climbed

The monsters we have faced and scared

And The burgers we have dined

I will keep her in my heart for always

And I hope that you can too

Because she would not be alive if it weren’t for all of you

Felicity and Me”

We wish her well in her future endeavors.

Mark Hamill is a man of many voices. Now he lends his vocal talents to the killer doll Chucky in the new reboot of Child’s Play. He announced it on twitter quote “People let me tell you ’bout my best friend…”🎶

The wicked fun begins when @ChildsPlayMovie is unleashed in theaters: Friday, June 21st 2019. #SoLuckyImChucky 🤪  Unquote Original Child’s Play director Tom Holland tweeted back quote Smart move. With a thumbs up emoji. Unquote.

The Big Bang Theory is almost done and one mystery apparently will never be answered. Penny’s maiden name. That’s right in twelve years of episodes her last name has never been seen or uttered. Executive Producer told The Hollywood Reporter quote “[Eventually] we got nervous and superstitious about giving her one,”“[I]t will always be Hofstadter.” Unquote So I guess we will never know. Perhaps it was Blank.

The Directors of the new Pet Sematary remake really wish the trailers and commercial  hadn’t spoiled so much. Especially the death of the daughter Ellie. However they did defend the trailer and even pointed out a benefit in an interview with Collider Dennis Widmyer said quote Yeah, we would not have done that, but we don’t work in marketing. But I will say though, to their credit, that we tested the film in a bunch of different cities, as you always do with studio films, and our score went up after the trailer was revealed. I’m not saying it was because of that. We had made the movie better obviously in between, but I don’t know. There is something to be said about people sort of knowing going in already what to expect and then being ready for it rather than blindsided by it if they’re not into it. Unquote Pet Sematary come to theaters on April 5th.

Pet Sematary producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura speaking with Consequence of Sound said that a sequel is possible, but thinks that it should be a prequel instead quote

“I think if there’s anything here, there’s a prequel. I think if you look at the book, we didn’t cover all that stuff that happens before the Creed family moves in. So, I think there’s a movie there, and I think I’d be particularly interested in doing that, because, again, it’s the source material and you are going toward something that also has a lot of crazy, creepy feelings about it.”

So, would you rather see a sequel or a prequel or neither?

Screen Rant has confirmed that Netflix has renewed The Umbrella Academy for season two. Production is expected to be underway from May 2019 through to September 2019. And no words on plot or release date have been forthcoming, so watch this space.

Don passed away two years ago this month at the age of 90, not having recorded any new dialogue for the sequel.  In a tweet Josh Cooley said quote “Some people say funny things, I say things funny.” -Don Rickles

All of his pieces may be replaceable, but his voice is not. Honored he signed on for TS4, honored he’s in TS4. unquote

There has been no elaboration on how his voice will be in the movie, however it’s more than likely that they will use vocal performances that were not used from the past 3 movies and he will just be around, but not integral to the plot in anyway.

Actress and model Tania Mallet has passed away. Tania can best be known for her role in the classic James Bond movie Goldfinger where she played the role of tilly Masterson. Now let’s get on with the show.

Star Wars news begins with a lot of peaks at the Galaxy’s Edge at Walt Disney World and Disney Land. The DisneyLand version will open on May 31st, while the Disney World version will open on August 29th.

First off, is the new Tie Fighters https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsLeaks/comments/avw1wz/tie_echelon_from_galaxys_edge_and_maybe_ix/?utm_content=media&utm_medium=post_embed&utm_name=2de182e27dc54057950d572ea822c0c1&utm_source=embedly&utm_term=avw1wz The TIE Echelon, which was confirmed by ABC News’s Clayton Sandall, will  appear in an upcoming movie, but nothing concrete on if it’ll be in Episode Nine. Sandall described quote It combines, if you could imagine Kylo’s shuttle kind of shrunken down into a TIE fighter look.” unquote We have also learned that the battalion of First Order Stormtroopers patrolling the park will be The 709th, aka The red Fury. Entertainment Weekly noted quote “This elite squad from The First Order has arrived on a new ship — the TIE Echelon, which has a cockpit similar to Kylo Ren’s batwinged shuttle but the curved foils of Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced x1.”

So while you’re at Disneyland or Disney World checking out the new Tie fighter and evading the Stormtroopers, why not sit down for a tall glass of Blue Bantha Milk. Blue Milk is, of course, what was served to Luke by his Aunt Beru in his last meal before his Aunt and Uncle met their grisly fates. Scott Trowbridge, the Disney Imagineer in charge of galaxy’s edge shared with Entertainment Weekly, quote  “I will tell you it’s not actually milk,”“If you’re walking around Florida in the middle of August, the last thing you want is, uh, a huge glass of milk.” He might be right, you might end up with a cold glass of Blue Cottage Cheese or worse. Perhaps they should make some cheese so you can have a Bantha Cheese pizza. Wonder if there’s an alchol filled version…a Blue Russian?

So you’ve had the milk, now what. We have word or two on the major attractions at Galaxy’s Edge. First off is Smuggler’s Run, which puts guests in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon has either a pilot, gunner or flight engineer, each with a different role, so you can have a different experience every time you ride.

Also you have Rise of the Resistance, that puts you in the role of a new recruit with the Resistance in a battle against the First Order and a face off with Kylo Ren. The journey takes you inside a full size starship and aboard a nearby Star Destroyer.

And of course you’re visit is not complete unless you empty your wallet of Galactic credits. The Droid Depot will let guests build their own astromech droids. Patrons will build either a R-series or BB series and can customize their droids with various parts and colors. You can also buy a pre-built droid and other droid related items.

You can also visit Savi’s Workshop to make your own lightsaber, Just cause the Jedi’s are no more doesn’t mean you can have a light sword of your own. And at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities, guest will fine items from Star Wars galactic history, including holocrons, Jedi and Sith artifacts and more. There’s also a Toydarian Toymaker, the Resistance Supply for all your resistance gear, the First Order Cargo for your First Order gear. And much much more.

I’ll have a link in the show notes for an article at Comicbook.com with a list of all the locations at the park.

A leaked lego set might just have confirmed a return to Rey’s home planet of Jakku An Instargamer by the name of savcreationsog claims that a set titled Assault on Jakku will sell for nearly fifty dollars and contain 399 pieces. No images of the set and for all we know this might be a complete fabrication. However, it must be noted that Episode IX did have principal photography that took place in Jordan, where Jakku was filmed in The Force Awakens, so….connect your own dots or bricks.

Chris Avellone, the writer of Star Wars Knights of the Old republic II and Fallout New Vegas is apparently working on a new Star Wars game,  Star Wars Jedi: The Fallen Order for Respawn. The games writer took to Twitter and confirmed it quote “I can’t say 100% b/c of NDAs, but the ones I can say: I just finished up work with Jedi: The Fallen Order – and beyond that, there’s another big bomb dropping in a month,”. “Er, I mean, maybe. Ahem

Jedi Fallen Order is A new action adventure game which tells an original story set shortly after the events of Star Wars™: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith™.

Currently, to watch all 10 films in the Star Wars saga, one would have to watch around 23 hours of film. Lucky for us, Topher Grace and Jeff Yorkes have condensed that down into one five minute video entitled Star Wars forever. Topher announced the compilation on his twitter quote “10 movies. 2 nerds. 1 weekend (when our wives were out of town). Enjoy…” The video boils it down to the key or iconic moments in the movies. This isn’t the first time Topher has taking a knife to Star Wars, back in 2012, he whittled down the prequel trilogy down to a single film. Topher said that it wasn’t a way to discredit George Lucas’ it was just an experiment to hone his editing skills. Topher told IndieWire why he did it. Quote“I don’t know what other guys do. Go fishing? For me, this is just a great way to relax,” “There’s something really zen about it.” So is there something you’d like to edit down into a smaller package?

Star Wars Celebration is just around the corner and our friends over at SciFi4Me will have a correspondent at the event. And Jedi News has revealed some of the exclusive merchandise that will be offered at the event. First on the list is Plush Loth-Wolves in white or grey from Star Wars Rebels. There’s also a Rancor tiki mug with a Luke Skywalker muglet by Geeky Tiki, a special Celebration mug with an adorable Porg surprise inside. And a Darth Maul jacket to honor the 20th anniversary of The Phantom Menace.  Twenty years since the Phantom Menace. I guess it’s time to fire up the Bluray and see if it holds up.

Star Trek

So many Trek series, so little time…Let’s start off with The Picard show is on a hiring first off is the initial director for the pilot episode, That honor goes to Hanelle Culpepper. Hanelle might be relatively new to trek having only directed two episodes of Discovery, but she has quote the directoral pedigree. She has directed for Empire Criminal Minds, Sleepy Hollow, Grimm, Gotham, Lucifer and The Flash. This will also make her the first female director to helm a pilot episode for the franchise. We also have word straight from the mouth of Trek Alum Jonathan Frakes that he will direct  the new series. Telling the Writer Experience Podcast quote Now my season looks like Star Trek: Discovery – the new wonderful Star Trek series, the Picard show – which Patrick [Stewart] is launching, and The Orville, which is some people’s new Star Trek. And I just finished The Gifted, which is a sort of X-Men Marvel origins show. So, I am back in that world. Unquote

In front of the camera we will see, Santiago Cabrera and Michelle Hurd, Cabrera has recently starred in the CBS series Salvation and Big Little Lies on HBO and Hurd’s credits include Blind Spot, the Fox tv version of Lethal Weapon as well as Ash vs Evil Dead, Daredevil and Jessica Jones. No word on what roles either actor will be in the series.

We got some new details about when production will begin. Production Weekly Said that production will begin on April 14th and go for five and a half months finishing on October 1st. The show will be shot at Santa Clarita Studios, 35 miles north of the old Paramount Studios where most Star trek series were produced. This is also the studio where Patrick Stewart filmed his two season Starz comedy series Blunt Talk.

We also have a hint at the series title, Production Weekly lists the title as Star Trek Destiny with a working title as Drawing Room. It should be noted that Destiny is one of the titles that CBS trademarked last year..

By the way,  Congratulations to actress Mary Wiseman who tied to note to her fiance Noah last month.

Moving on to shows starting production to one with episodes aplenty under its belt. CBS All Access has renewed Discovery as expected for it’s third season with production set to start in July and it will have yet another new showrunner. Michelle Paradise has been promoted to co showrunner alongside Alex Kurtzman, To quote Alex Kurtzman in the official announcement, quote “Michelle joined us midway through season two and energized the room with her ferocious knowledge of Trek,” . “Her grasp of character and story detail, her drive and her focus have already become essential in ensuring the Trek legacy, and her fresh perspective always keeps us looking forward. I’m proud to say Michelle and I are officially running Star Trek: Discovery together.” I’ll have to agree that this season has been markedly better than last season. The main story is interesting, however… Maybe season three can see it tightened up some more? It’s expected that season three will air in the second or third quarter of 2020, after the new Picard show finishes up.

Now I mentioned Jonathan Frakes a couple of minutes ago, and that wasn’t the only thing he mentioned in that interview Mr. Frakes also assessed CBS’s plans for the franchise on tv quote My understanding is that Alex Kurtzman and Secret Hideout are creating a Star Trek show that will hopefully allow fans of Trek to have something fresh to see all the time. That is why Discovery, now that it is a hit, will continue, and they have announced Sir Patrick’s show, which is not titled, that will air after Discovery. And they have announced they are developing a show for Michelle Yeoh, so Empress Georgiou who is a character on Discovery will have her own stories. They have hired the guy from Rick and Morty – [Mike McMahan] – to write an animated show called Lower Decks, which I have seen parts of that are hysterical. So you have one, two, three, four. They’ve got a Nickelodeon connection for a little kid’s Star Trek, so that’s five. So, there is a world that is being created by Kurtzman and his team that will hopefully continue for many years and provide entertainment, and obviously conversation, about Star Trek for decades. Unquote  Jonathan talks a lot more about directing on the podcast, we will have a link to The Writer Experience podcast in our show notes. https://soundcloud.com/writerexperience/ep38

We also have an update on the DS9 documentary What we Left Behind. They’ve been working for months, to put 20 minutes of Deep Space Nine footage into HD. They released an update on the official website quote We’re nearly through the heavy research-and-scanning stage of our remaster, and with just a few (hundred) more film rolls ahead of us, we’re hard at work replacing the 20+ minutes of new HD sequences — spanning ALL SEVEN seasons of the original run of Deep Space Nine! Unquote  And they also posted an update on how close they are to release quote The restoration process alone is a HUGE undertaking — after all your support in funding this expensive endeavor, it has taken months of work from the CBS Digital team to coordinate, research, find, ship, scan and deliver the original film negatives for us, and more time from our team to clean up, color, and polish the resulting images (and even re-create a handful of effects!).

While we’re still waiting on final elements to arrive and distribution details to lock firmly into place, we don’t want to promise any deadlines we can’t meet with the film not yet entirely complete. They also teased a big update to come this month. So stay tuned…

Set a course for the Gamma Quadrant, GameSamba announced a sequel to Star Trek Alien Domain, Star Trek Alien Domain Incursion. The web browser based new game, which is now available pits groups of players against The Dominion in a battle for control of resources. The game is described as a hybrid of a simulation and strategy game. You can play the game at https://incursion.gamesamba.com

Marvel News

We start off Marvel news with Captain Marvel. The movie opened this past weekend grossing 455 million dollars worldwide, 153 million of that from the US. This made it the seventh largest opening for a Marvel movie of all time and puts it 18th on the list of biggest opening weekends of all time domestically.

Marvel movie star Samuel L Jackson has played both a Jedi and an agent of shield and he would be more than happy to reprise his Star wars roel of Mace Windu if asked, his Captain Marvel co-star Brie Larson confirmed to entertainment weekly that Sam even brought his lightsaber to the set of the marvel movie. Quote “I got to hold his lightsaber! He brought it to me on set on May the 4th, and I cried. It was so cool. I wanna be a Jedi.” unquote of course May the 4th is best known as Star Wars day.

Of course, we know that Captain Marvel is set in the 1990s, a time of video stores, well an interesting pop up shop has popedup in Canada (as far as we know) in the mall, a parody of Blockbuster video called Stanley’s video. Not an actual video store apparently but a scavenger hunt that nets the participant a Captain Marvel pin as a prize. Nifty.

And congratulations appear to be in order for Captain Marvel co-star Jude Law, according to Closer Weekly, Jude has officially gotten engaged to his girlfriend of four years business psychologist Phillipa Coan. This will be the second marriage for Mr. Law. The Sun reports that the wedding will take place in May with Jude’s eldest son Rafferty serving as best man.

Now over to the comic book side Thanos and Infinity Wars Artist Mike Deodato Jr.  has announced his departure from the House of ideas. However he won’t be leaving immediately, he’ll leave in June. According to Mr, Deodato On his facebook page, quote “Like everything in adult life, all decisions we make come with consequences, a price to be paid,” “In this case, in order to live my adult dream I have to let go my child dream. I have to leave Marvel. To leave home.”

“Marvel became a family to me, I grew as an artist and as a person together with all the good people I have worked there. The best people,” “Always encouraging me, always treating me with respect and care. It is weird that I feel like a teenager leaving home to face the world when I am older than a lot of them, but that is how I feel.
And I will miss and treasure them.” He did however teased he has one more project before he leaves, quote “June 14 will be my last day at home [Marvel], but you will keep seeing me for a while after that,” “Because my family would not let me go without a gift and what they gave me was the most amazing book ever, an opportunity for me to revisit all the characters I care the most in Marvel Universe – The Savage Avengers. I couldn’t think of a better farewell gift. We wish Dedato good wishes on his future endeavors.

On to the Sony side of the Marvel coin perhaps I should start calling it a die, there are more sides that way, Venom 2 is searching for a new director. As Venom director Ruben Fleischer won’t direct the sequel, Discussing Film has confirmed with Sony that he has departed.  According to the report production on the sequel is currently on the schedule for this November in Atlanta. Anyone want to do it?

Spiderman Into the Spider Verse is an Academy Award winning film. So how better to capitalize on this? Spin-offs! A new report from Discussing Film  says that Sony is looking into more spin offs than just the Spider Verse sequel and the all female spinoff. Which would suit Spider Verse producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller just fine, Lord told comicbook.com quote “Look, we wanted to make a movie that felt like it was the tip of the iceberg,” “You could imagine all of these other things. So it’s music to our ears that people could imagine a Spider-Noir film, and the Spider-Ham insane cartoon.” Into the Spider-verse grossed 362.8 million worldwide and had a budget of 90 million.

Now for some breaking business news. Disney has set the closing date for the merger as 12:02 AM Eastern Time on March 20th. This indicates that the final regulatory hurdle from regluators in Mexico has been achieved.

Not all of this is great as up to 4, 000 layoffs are expected to occur as the two companies integrate.

The closing also means that a new corporation is born, Fox Corporation will emerge from the bits and pieces of 21st Century Fox that Disney didn’t buy.

By the way, I do own stock in Disney.

DC News

We start the DC Universe news with the end…of Arrow. Stephen Amell, who plays the Green Arrow on the show announced it on his twitter feed  quote Playing Oliver Queen has been the greatest professional experience of my life… but you can’t be a vigilante forever. Arrow will return for a final run of 10 episodes this Fall,”. “There’s so much to say… for now I just want to say thank you.” The show that launched the Arrowverse of shows shot it’s first arrow in October of 2012.

Krypton’s second season has wrapped shooting. The Syfy network show left off on a bit of a cliff hanger. Season 2 will debut sometime later this year.

DC’s Legends of tomorrow has a new series regular. Jes Macallan, who plays Time Bureau director Ava Sharpe has closed a deal to return permanently for season five of the WB show according to an exclusive report on Deadline dot com. Jes joined the series as Ava in season 3.

In movie news, Aquaman has passed Guardians of the galaxy on the all time domestic box office list. So far, Aquaman has grossed  333.2 million in the united states passing the first Guardians movie which grossed 333.17 million. Aquaman is one of the best performing DCEU movies and it’s already put a sequel and a spinoff based on The Trench into production.

DC is having a bit of a resurgence with the success of Aquaman and the anticipation over Shazam! The stand alone movie things seems to be doing well for DC movies. Speaking with the LA Times, Warner Bros. Entertainment CEO Kevin Tsujihara spoke about this new strategy

Quote “The upcoming slate, with Shazam, Joker, Wonder Woman 1984 and Birds of Prey, feels like we’re on the right track,” said Tsujihara. “We have the right people in the right jobs working on it. The universe isn’t as connected as we thought it was going to be five years ago. You’re seeing much more focus on individual experiences around individual characters. That’s not to say we won’t at some point come back to that notion of a more connected universe. But it feels like that’s the right strategy for us right now.” Sounds a lot like their going more for the Marvel version of universe building. Sounds like a good idea.

The streaming service DC Universe’s Doom Patrol series has revealed that Aquaman exists in their universe after Robotman referenced the King of the seas. Robotman teased Cyborg as Cyborg looked for his keys saying quote “I bet Aquaman doesn’t lose his keys.”. Of course Aquaman doesn’t lose his keys, they’re on a little seahorse keychain.

Shazam!s running time has been revealed and you’ll want to block two hours and twelve minutes. That puts it’s run time between Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad in length and a few minutes longer than Captain Marvel.

Swamp Thing is currently under production and director les wiseman showed off a video on his Instagram showing off the creepy set. In the video Len is shown wading in the swamp, feeling around for something in the water. We don’t know what he was searching for, but one thing has been found. Adrienne Barbeau, who starred in the swamp thing movie back in 1982 will be in the new series. What role she will play has not been revealed.

Geek News

We begin Geek News with an old man complaining. Steven Spielberg thinks that movies made for Netflix should be ineligible for the Academy Awards and is proposing a rule change to accomplish this. All this because Roma, which was produced by Netflix and ran in a theater for a short time in order to be eligible for the Oscars nearly won Best Picture. It did however walk away with three awards, Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography. A spokesperson for Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment said quote “Steven feels strongly about the difference between the streaming and theatrical situation,” a spokesperson for Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment said. “He’ll be happy if the others will join [his campaign] when that comes up [at the Academy Board of Governors meeting]. He will see what happens.” Now it’s not that Steven is alone in this battle, there are other reports that say that some Academy members think Netflix spent too much too market the film to Academy members and that you shouldn’t be able to just put a release in a couple of theaters for less than a week to qualify for the awards.  If any change is made by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. We’ll let you know.

Speaking of films, we have some possible casting news on the new Ghostbusters movie from Sony. According to Variety, Carrie Coon and Finn Wolfhard are in talks to play a mother and her son. Apparently these characters will be the center of plot. Not much is known about the film, which is being helmed by Jason Reitman, son of the original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman. The film should be filmed this summer and be released in July next year.

Now I know what you’re thinking, We don’t need another Ghostbusters movie and you may or may not be right. However do you think we need a sequel to the Tom Cruise movie of many titles, Edge of Tomorrow aka Live, Die, Repeat? Well get ready for one. Warner Bros is moving ahead with the movie with Invention of Lying scribe Matthew Robinson writing the script. The original from 2014 based on the Japanese novel, All you need is Kill did make 370 plus million worldwide. Tom Cruise , whose 56 by the way, has not signed on for the sequel but it’s expected that they will.

As you know, I love the Orville. It’s my favorite series right now. Well now we get an expansion this summer with a new comic book mini – series from Dark Horse Comics. The four issue series will be written by  The Orville executive producer and writer David A Goodman with art by David Cabeza and color from Michael Atiyeh and will take place between seasons one and two and be split into two storylines. Story one is called New Beginnings and sees Ed and Gordon on a journey to a fleet conference when they find a distress call from a Union ship that’s older than a century. The second storyline follows The Orville as the ship discovers a Union ship headed toward Krill space, but could it be something more complicated and deadly? The Orville miniseries comes out on July 17th.

Seth Rogen is entering the Twilight Zone. Seth will star in an upcoming episode of the classic series revival on CBS All Access. The series, which premieres on April first with new weekly episodes starting on April 11th. No word on what role Seth will be playing or in what episode. He joins other famous names like Greg Kinnear, John Cho, Adam Scott and Kumail Nanjiani who will star in upcoming episodes.

Taika Waititi has been tapped to co-write and direct the pilot for a Time Bandits tv series according to Deadline. The series will adapt the 1981 adventure comedy from Terry Gilliam, that saw a group of time jumping dwarves on the run from God after taking a map to all the time holes in the universe.  Waititi will executive produce alongside Terry Gilliam and Dan Halsted.

The world was shocked this past week by the announcement from Jeopardy! host Alex trebek that he has Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.  Alex decided to get ahead of tabloid journalism and make the announcement himself. He said that he plans on beating this and even joked that he has too because he still has three years left on his contract. We send our best well wishes to Mr. trebek.

We close tonight with a couple of remembrances. First off, we say goodbye to Katherine Helmond, the actress probably most well known for her roles on Who’s the Boss and Soap died at the age of 89 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Her career goes back more than fifty years Her first television role was on Car 54 Where are you in 1962. Her first big tv role was in 1977 as Kathrine Tate on the tv comedy Soap, which won her a Golden Globe in 1980. In 1981, she had a memorable role as Mrs. Ogre in the Terry Gilliam movie Time Bandits. In 1984, she got another big role as Mona Robinson in the Tony Danza show Who’s the Boss, for which she won another Golden Globe award.  She has also had role in the Cars movie franchise as Lizzie. Katherine Helmond is survived by her husband David Christian.

The saddest news of this past week was the sudden death of actor Luke Perry. Luke Perry was 52 years old. He moved to LA after high school to pursue acting. He started in soap operas like Loving and Another world, before getting his big break as Dylan McKay in 1990 on Beverly Hills 90210. He’s had plenty of geeky roles over the years with roles in the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer and  The Fifth Element. He was also appeared on The Simpsons, Biker Mice From mars , Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the realm, The Incredible Hulk , Family Guy and Community. His last big role was as Archie Andrews father, Fred on Riverdale. His last role will be as Wayne Maunder in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood which will be out this year. Luke Perry passed away from a stroke He is survived by his two children Jack and Sophie and his finance Wendy Bauer.

6 Months In

So…here I am, six months in and it’s Christmas. Christmas doesn’t mean much to me. I even have to work my night job Christmas night.

However, that doesn’t mean there’s not a lot to look forward to in 2019.

I hope to get at least 50 downloads per episode.

I will have my first convention booth at the Smallville Con in Hutchinson in June.

There are plenty of good movies coming out including Men In Black International

X-Men Dark Phoenix

and Avengers Endgame

There’s always new equipment I wanna buy, like a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 or a different mike.

Maybe I’ll start another podcast as well, I would just need a subject that I know well that there are not alot of other podcasts covering it.

But that’s the future. I’m gonna put together a special episode next week to be released New Year’s Day.

See you in 2019!

Days away…

I’m just a few days away from recording the first episode.

To me, this is a lot like rehearsing for a play. I’m checking equipment, reading the script and fortifying myself mentally.

The good news is that I’m not doing this show live, that just didn’t make any sense to do and I doubt anyone would want to watch. This is also good because I can stop the recording to take a drink or use the bathroom.

Now I just wait to record.

The Journey Begins

Thanks for joining me!

Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter. — Izaak Walton

Space is…big The Multiverse though is infinite and so is geekdom.

Here at Multiverse Tonight, we plan on looking at all of the various geek multiverses. Focusing mainly on the DC, Marvel, Star Trek, Star Wars, and The Orville. Do you have a favorite universe not mentioned here? Let me know and I’ll talk about it. Heck, if you want me to discuss WWE, I’ll talk about it. I watch it.

As for the details, I haven’t quite settled them yet. Here’s what I know so far. I’m going to tape the show on the weekend and release it later that week. I will do a video version for Youtube and an audio podcast. At least two episodes a month. The show notes will be provided here. I plan on having a patreon and an amazon affiliate link and more.

So watch this space for further details.
