Show Notes: Episode 54: Death in Winter & Episode 55: A Grouch for All Seasons

Tonight! Baby Yoda says buckle up, Picard’s got more adventures coming and we say goodbye to three of the greats on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Hello and welcome to the SciFi edition of Multiverse Tonight. This is episode 54,

So, we’re halfway through December, are you ready to finish the year,. I think we’re all ready to get done with this year and get into 2020. This is the time of year it seems that things slow down. I’m always amazed that there’s enough to really report on. But a few things always come up.

So before we get going with the show, can you do something for me? Share the show with others, if you really like the show throw me a bone and donate. Let’s get on with the news.

Star Wars

Baby Yoda wants you to know he still needs a carseat in the state of Mississippi. Or at least a Star Wars The Mandalorian fan wants you to  think that. The official twitter account for the Mississippi Department of Transportation posted a photoshopped highway sign that read quote Baby Yoda Uses the Force but still needs a carseat. Unquote They also captioned it with quote Buckle up. This is the way. #BabyYoda.

You know, Baby Yoda, Porgs, Ewoks. All cute, all more popular than almost anything else in the Star Wars Universe. Maybe they should just make a show starring Baby Yoda playing with Porgs and Ewoks.

Speaking of the small green Muppet, Mandalorian Director Bryce Dallas Howard has broken her silence on how it was to keep the character a secret. Telling the Hollywood reporter quote “Agonizing,” Howard replied with a laugh. “I’ve been walking around for the last year with a face like the cat that ate the canary. I’m so, so, so excited to be a part of this and the phenomenon that Baby has become. The thing I was most nervous about was that my kids had been on set quite a bit. So they had seen Baby and interacted with Baby. When we were filming, my kids were 6 and 11; they’re now 7 and 12. When the kids went back to school, every single day I would say, ‘So, what are you not gonna talk about today?’ And they would say, ‘Baby!’ (Laughs) I’d be like, ‘That’s right!’ I would just consistently remind them that there’s no circumstance that could ever arise where they’re allowed to talk about Baby. Now, for them, it’s very confusing, because I’m like, ‘Oh, now, you can talk about Baby,’ and they’re like, ‘Oh, okay.’ We’ve been having this routine for about a year now, and it’s fun; it’s really, really fun. Everyone is super pissed that there’s no merch. (Laughs) Everyone is like, ‘I want a Baby Yoda stuffed toy!’ But I think they made a good choice in not focusing there and just focusing on the storytelling.” unquote . And I’m still SO behind in watching it. Only watched episode one. Too much to watch so little time.

The press tour for the final Skywalker movie is in full swing and JJ Abrams in an interview with Cinema Blend talked about Carrie Fisher’s role in the movie, despite her passing nearly three years ago. This involved using unused footage from The Force Awakens. JJ told them quote “Clearly we would have done other things had Carrie been around, but I will say despite her not being with us anymore, her presence in the movie is not inconsequential,” “She’s not being ‘added in’ so that she’s in the movie. And I would say that her story, her role, the importance of Leia, I would argue is as profound as what you’re saying even though she wasn’t here.””There was no way, as I’ve said before, to tell the story without Leia. She’s too important. It’s Skywalker saga. She is the living Skywalker in our story. You don’t want to start the story and say something happened to her in between movies. It didn’t feel right. We’d never recast it. A digital Leia wouldn’t work. There was no way to do it.” “When we looked at the footage from [Star Wars:] The Force Awakens, which I was obviously very familiar with, and realized we had a number of scenes we could use, and, and write scenes around, it was suddenly like, ‘Oh my God, we could tell the story with Leia in the film.” unquote

The rise of Skywalker comes out in just a few days from now.

Disney is warning fans that the new Star Wars movie could trigger seizures with those people with epilepsy. Disney issued a statement with the Epilepsy Foundation that the film contains quote “several sequences with imagery and sustained flashing lights” that could affect those with photosensitive epilepsy. My guess would be flashes from lightsabers hitting together. Disney suggests that theaters post notices to warn of the risk. Flashing lights can trigger seizures in about three percent of individuals who have epilepsy. This isn’t the first time Disney has given this notice, they also did it for The Incredibles II.

Star Trek

The merger of Viacom and CBS is now official and the newly reunited company is busy merging, selling unneeded headquarters, eliminating duplicate positions and forth.

This also means that the Star Trek movie and tv rights are now back under one roof. What will that mean for the franchise? New movies featuring the tv characters from the new shows?

So with that behind us, let’s check in with the Section 31 show. The new show is set to start filming once Discovery’s season three is done. CBS All Access executive vice president Julie McNamara talking to Vanity Fair said that the writers room under Alex Krutzman has been assembled quote “We are very excited about the Section 31 show and Michelle Yeoh is excited to do it,”. “She is in the current season of Discovery so she’s working on that right now but we have scripts getting written, and Alex has a writer’s room. We love what we’ve heard so far. It’s yet another tonality of Trek. As Alex has mapped it all out, each show has its own unique sort of voice and vision.”

Mr. Kurtzman has dropped some hints of the tone of the show comparing it to a Clint Eastwood style Western.. Saying quote It occupies an area of the Trek universe that’s never really been explored geographically. It has a new mythology to it, which is very interesting. And it puts Michelle’s character to the test in a lot of ways that Discovery can’t. In some ways it will be her Unforgiven, I would say.” Unquote

And yesterday we got the news the Star Trek Picard will not be just a one shot series. The show has been renewed for season two. However Michael Chabon will not be a part of season two as he’s been named showrunner for the adaptation of the Cavalier and Klay novels over at showtime. No word on when the second season will be, but It’ll probably be in late 2020 or sometime in 2021.

William Shatner is going someplace he knows very well, Divorce Court. The soon to be Four Time Divorcee has filed for divorce from his wife Elizabeth, his wife of the past eighteen years. This will be a smooth divorce as Mister Shatner is a fan of prenuptial agreements. Bill first got married back in 1956, that lasted to 1969. His next one was from 1973 to 1994. His next marriage in 1997 didn’t last long ending with the death of Nerine Kidd in 1999. Odds are that this latest marriage will be his last. William Shatner is 88 years old.

Good news or bad news depending on what side of the coin your on. Quientin tarantino speaking with the consequence of sound dot net was asked if Star Trek was going to be part of hsi planned ten films. He replied quote I think I’m steering away from Star Trek, but I haven’t had an official conversation with those guys yet. In a strange way, it seems like this movie, Hollywood, would be my last. So, I’ve kind of taken the pressure off myself to make that last big voilà kind of statement. I mean to such a degree there was a moment when I was writing and went, “Should I do this now? Should I do something else? Is this the 10th one?” No, no don’t stop the planets from aligning, what are you, Galactus? If the Earth is saying do it, do it. Not that it was an argument, but a little thought, like, “Well, if I’m gonna go out like Max Ophüls style, Lola Montez, this is it, and if It’s not good, then all my other work is trash, alright.” This would have been the one. But in a weird way, it actually kind of freed me up. I mean, I have no idea what the story of the next one’s going to be. I don’t even have a clue. Unquote

And now for some sad news Michael Lamper, husband of Next Generation actress Marina Sirtis has passed away. Marina broke the news on twitter saying quoteI’m going to be gone for a while. My beloved husband passed away peacefully in his sleep last night. For those of you waiting for a shoutout on Cameo, please forgive me I don’t feel up to i. I’ll let you know when the service is back on. Unquote Michael was a rock guitarist and musician who once portrayed an Acamarian Gatherer in the TNG third season episode The Vengeance Factor.  He and Marina married on June twenty first 1992 with Brent Spiner and Michael Dorn acting as groomsman in a traditional greek ceremony. His rock carrer saw him play with such musicians as Tommy Shaw from Styx, The Allman Brothers, Quiet Riot and Los Lobos. He was 61. My heart goes out to Marina.

The Matrix Four has cast Jonathan Groff in an unknown role. Groff is most recently known for his role voicing Kristoff in Frozen 2. Johnathan joins returning cast members Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith, as well as newcomers Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris and Jessica Henwick.

Variety has learned that Will Poulter will not be in the Lord of the Rings series on Amazon. Variety has learned through their sources that scheduling conflicts will present him from being a part of it. As to what role he would have played is still unknown.

Power Rangers is getting another big screen reboot, this time it will be at Paramount and will take it back to the 90’s. The Hollywood reporter reports that Paramount is currently in early negotiations with Johnathan Entwistle and would involve quote “a time-travel element that brings the kids to the 1990s, and in Back to the Future fashion, they have to find a way to get back to their present. Unquote

To say that Disney had a very good year at the box office would be an understatement, The House of Mouse broke their own box office record of 7.6 billion set back in 2016 crossing the ten billion dollar ceiling. It should be noted that this doesn’t include it’s newly acquired Fox movies. If those are factored in the number would be nearly 12 billion.  Disney currently also holds six of the ten biggest movies of the year.

The Golden Globe nominations are out. Netflix walked away with thirty four nominations. Seventeen for motion pictures and 17 for television. HBO came in second with fifteen. The movie Marriage Story had the most for a film. While Chernobyl, the Crown and Unbelievable had the most for television. Geeky films getting nominations included Joker with four including Best Motion Picture, Best Director , Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and best score. Also getting nominations were Frozen 2, How to train your dragon the hidden world and toy story 4. Only one Geeky tv nomination Game of Thrones with one best actor nomination for Kit Harington.

Death seemed to be busy. A few minutes ago I talked about the death of Deanna Sirtis’s husband. Well, there are three more.

First off, we say goodbye to actor Robert Walker Jr. The actor passed away in Malibu on December sixth. He will be best known to people as Charlie Evans the boy raised by the Thasians who gave him omnipotent power in the episode Charlie X. He also appeared in episodes of The Time Tunnel, Bonanza, the Six Million Dollar Man and Chips. He also had a role in the movie Easy rider. In a statement his wife said about roebert quote “Bob always beat to his own drum and stayed true to himself in all of his endeavors,” his wife said in a statement. “Although an accomplished actor, his true art was living fully. He was a photographer, drummer, raconteur and gallery owner. His love of the ocean kept him in Malibu, and he had great tales of his adventures paddling to Catalina from there. Bob [also] had a constant interest in developing his internal martial arts practice.” He is survived by his wife, seven children and five grandchildren. He was 79.

Next is Star Trek writer Dorthy Catherine Fontana better known as DC Fontana. DC began as a secretary for tv writer Samuel A Peeples, while working for him, she became a professional writer writing stories for The Tall Man and Frontier Circus. Later she began working for Gene Roddenberry’s series The Lieutenant as a secretary for producer Del Reisman. Eventually she wanted to work for Gene directly and after finding out that she wanted to become a writer, Roddenberry encouraged her. In 1964, she would publish her first novel, a western called Brazos River co written with Harry Sanford.

When Roddenberry began working on Star Trek and with the encouragement of associate producer Robert Justmn, she began working on the show Where she wrote the teleplay for Charlie X She worked on ten episodes overall including tomorrow is Yesterday, This Side of Paradise, which got her a promotion to story editor, Journey to Babel, friday’s child, the ultimate computer, The city on the edge of forever, The Enterprise Incident, That which survives and The Way to eden. After Star Trek, she worked with Gene again on the Questor tapes ,Genesis II and Star Trek The Animated Series.

After that she worked on scripts for other shows including The Six Million Dollar Man, Logan’s Run, Buck Rogers and The Waltons.

When the Star trek the Next Generation began, she went to Gene immediately where he pitched an idea to her that became the pilot episode Encounter at Farpoint. She would become an associate producer on the series but left during the first season due to reported  difficulties with writer Robert Lewin caused a bit of a falling out between her and Gene Roddenberry and she left. . She would later return to star Trek writing the Deep Space Nine episode Dax.

She also wrote the Star Trek bok Vulcan’s Glory and an episode of the fan made series Star Trek New Voyages.

DC Fontana is survived by her husband Dennis Skotak, who told the New York Times that the cause of her death was cancer. She was eighty years old.

Finally we say farewell to Rene Auberjonois, the actor known to Star Trek fans for his portrayal of

Constable Odo on Star trek Deep Space Nine as well as directing eight episodes of the show. Rene was born in New York in 1940. After college he began his acting career in earnest working with theater companies in Washington DC, San Francisco , LA and New York. In 1968, he landed a role on Broadway appearing in three films simultaneously. A year later he would win a Tony Award for his role opposite Katharine Hepburn in Coco. He directed and acted in lots of productions over the years and was inducted into the American theater Hall of Fame in 2018.

His Film work is vast as well. He played Father Mulcahy in the film version of MASH, played a gangster in Police Academy 5, Dr. Burton in Batman Forever and appeared as Colonel West in Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country. His final film role in a movie called Cortex has yet to be released.

But his most known work was in Television. He worked in that medium since 1966. Appearing in episodes of the Mod Squad, Night Gallery, The Jeffersons, Wonder Woman, LA Law, The Outer Limits, Chicago Hope, Stargate SG1, Frasier, Nash Bridges, Warehouse 13, the Good Wife and Many more. In a statement to the press his son Remy said that his father was a proud progressive and consummate professional and craftsman and praised his father’s work with Doctors Without Borders. He also said that he was a dedicated father and had a fantastic sense of humor.

Rene Auberjonois was 79 years old.

Tonight! Synder cut…subway sandwiches, Birds of Prey is not a sequel and we say Farewell to the man in the Big Bird on this comic edition of Multiverse Tonight.

Greetings and welcome to the comics edition of Multiverse Tonight. Episode 55.

So…here we are, just a week away from Christmas, little over a week until the end of the year. What do you want for Christmas? What do you want from next year?

Here’s what I want. I want to do a good job for you with this podcast. All I ask of you is to share the show with your friends, donate a buck or two if you feel generous. Just go to the site for more.

DC

Are you starting to get tired of all the calls to release the Snyder cut of Justice League? It’s kinda one of those things that just won’t die. Well Subway restaurants have put in their two cents via twitter. Snyder fans started it by asking the company how many retweets it would take to get a donation of 10,000 sandwiches by Subway. Subway responded by saying that 5000 retweets in five hours would get it done. The fans came through Subway soon tweeted quote  So you’re fast… and since you did it in under 214 minutes we are going to up the donation to 15,000 subs! And oh yeah, #ReleaseTheSnyderCut unquote Good on them and good on the fans. My guess is that the cut will eventually see the light of day. Maybe if they all pledge to make some movie of Warner Bros a success that normally wouldn’t they’d get the studios attention?

The cinematographer for Black Adam, Lawrence Sher is making some high claims for what the movie will be. Telling Collier during a Q&A for Joker quote “One of my interests about it is to continue to sort of — and we’ve talked about it with Dwayne and obviously with Jaume and DC — can we continue to sort of reshape what a comic book movie is?” “Like yes, of course you want it to be entertaining and it has to make a decent amount of money so it can’t live in such a fringe place that it doesn’t bring people in, but can we do something inventive? So that’s the goal is to continue to try to do something a bit inventive with it.” That’s a big bold claim for a movie that we haven’t seen anything from yet. Hopefully he won’t end up eating those words.

So what do you think of Jokers potential for an Oscar Nomination? Well if the critics choice award nominations are any indication. There’s a chance. Joker has received seven nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix, Best Adapted Screenplay for Todd Phillips and Scott Silver, Best Cinematography for Lawrence Sher, Best Production Design for Mark Friedberg and Kris Moran, Best Hair and Makeup, and Best Score for Hildur Guanadottir. They weren’t the only comics property to get some nominations: Avengers Endgame and Spiderman Far From Home got nominations for Best Action Movie. Avengers Endgame also got a nod for Best SciFi or Horror Movie as well as best visual effects. HBO’s Watchmen got a nomination for Best Drama, it faces off against Game of Thrones in that category but I think Watchmen’s got this. Watchmen’s Regina King got is up for Best Actress in  a Drama , Tim Blake Nelson is up for Best Supporting Actor, Jean Smart Watchmen and Gwendoline Christies is up for Best Supporting Actress. The twenty fifth Critics Choice Awards will be handed out on Sunday January twelfth.

Well here’s something to make you go huh? The upcoming Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn will have no ties to Suicide Squad according to BoP director Sue Kroll during a set visit by Screen Rant. She told them quote “You’ll see it in the movie, it’s a standalone movie, it’s not connected to Suicide Squad. It’s not a sequel, it’s not a continuation of that story. So it has nothing to do with her break out of prison. But you’re right, and we’ve been very upfront that this is about her emancipation. She and the Joker have broken up. This is her personal journey of discovery with these women. So it’s not related at all, so don’t try to apply linear logic to how the two go, because they don’t.” unquote She also told them that it has no similarities to Suicide Squad and that it was an oportunity to celebrate the amazing character.

So let’s just unwind this this movie is…I’m assuming in the same universe as Suicide Squad, but it will in no way connect to Suicide Squad…not even a mention. They do realize that having Harley Quinn, the same character played by the same actress still connects it to Suicide Squad, don’t they? Maybe I should just stop and lie down for awhile, this is making my head hurt. Birds of Prey comes out on February seventh.

Let’s talk tv for a moment. The big Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover has had many cameos, Burt Ward’s Dick Grayson, Lucifer. Apparently Arrowverse producer Marc Guggenheim put out feelers to another star Nicolas Cage. In an interview with Indiewire Mr. Guggenheim said quote”We did reach out to Nic Cage,” Guggenheim revealed during an interview with Indiewire. “We reached out to a lot of people, and there were people who didn’t want to do it. There were people who would only do it for amounts of money that we could not ever afford. And there were other people who really wanted to do it, but couldn’t for scheduling. That was the case with a lot of, I have to say, the movie stars that we reached out to. The thing about movie stars is, they’re all shooting movies. And unless those movies are shooting in Vancouver, we’re kind of out of luck. But I have to say that the sheer number of actors that we did end up getting exceeded my expectation.” unquote. Too bad, he could have finally gotten to wear that Superman suit on screen.

The Crisis will conclude on January fourteenth. Maybe next year they should do Zero Hour.

Marvel

Kevin Feige Marvel Studios president and chief creative officer of Marvel confirmed at Brazil’s CCXP19 con that Disney Plus’ Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be all about what happens to the falcon after endgame. Quote “We saw Old Man Cap hand that shield to Sam Wilson at the end of [Endgame], and the question is, what did he do with it next? What does it mean for Sam Wilson and that shield?” Feige said at Brazil’s CCXP19. “That’s a big responsibility, and that’s very much what the show focuses on and is about.” unquote Unfortunatly Wilson will have to deal with the US government’s U.S. Agent just in time for Helmut Zemo to come back on the scene. Sounds interesting, we still have no release date though other than the always enigmatic Fall 2020.

Speaking of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier they’ve added two new cast members Desmond Chiam and Miki Ishikawa have been added in two unknown roles.

Also at CCXP19, in a sit down interview, Mr. Feige confirmed that the Marvel Multiverse will be something that will shape the MCU for a long time to come.“When we first started the MCU, it was all about Tony Stark. Introduce the world to Tony Stark and that Iron Man armor,” “Then [we] went on to teach people what Asgardians were and learn about super soldiers then bring them together in Avengers. I’ve always loved space movies and I’ve always loved big intergalactic tales, which is why we did Guardians and the audience came with us so we could do a movie like Endgame. I always wanted to do time travel, which we finally got to do in Endgame. The multiverse is the next step in the evolution of the MCU and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is going to crack it open in ways that will have repercussions for a Disney+ series before it that’s not WandaVision and for movies after it in a big fun way.” unquote it’s also thought that the Loki series will tie into this in some way, Well we will have even longer to wait than Falcon and the winter soldier. WandaVision comes out in Spring of 21 and Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness comes out May 7th of 21.

Speaking of WandaVision, some paparazzi photos from the set of the show have surfaced online and they show that the space faring version of SHIELD will be in the show. SWORD. SWORD aka the Sentient World Observation and Response Department was one of the properties that used to belong to the 20th Century Fox subset of Marvel characters.

Could Venom 2 get an  R rating. And you might be able to thank Joker’s Billion dollar box office for that. Venom Producer Matt tolmach told Cinema blend quote  I mean, I think you always have to think about [it], now that that works. Having said that, our movie worked really well. Our franchise exists as it is, and I don’t think anybody is looking to just say, ‘Hey, they [did it]!’ We have a place in the world. So it isn’t like suddenly everybody’s considering what to do with the rating. … I think what Joker does is it tells you that you can succeed. For a very long time, that was the narrative. And Deadpool sort of wrestled that to the turf, and then Logan, but for a long time, that was considered totally forbidden. … So you know, I think it’s the greatest thing in the world that R-rated movies are being embraced by massive audiences. And it just means that there are more opportunities for that kind of storytelling.

Prepare to relieve the greatest moments in Marvel’s eighty year history. Marvel Snapshots will see Kurt Busiek bring together several creative teams for these eight standalone double sized issues which will include characters from the Golden Age to today through the eyes of ordinary people. Alex Ross will provide the covers.

First off is Sub Mariner: Marvels Snapshot number one. Best Selling Novelist and emmy Award winning writer Alan Brennert and artist Jerry Ordway join forces to tell an unforgettable story about Prince Namor set during WORLD WAR II featuring Namor, Betty Dean and the All Winners Squad. Alan Brennert in a statement on Marvel dot com said quote “I can honestly say that I enjoyed working on this story more than any comics story I’ve done in years. I grew up reading (and loving) Marvel’s Golden Age heroes in the 1960s, in reprints in FANTASY MASTERPIECES. But I never thought I’d have a shot at writing them—especially the All-Winners Squad!—and I’m grateful to Kurt Busiek and Tom Brevoort for providing me the opportunity, and to Jerry Ordway for bringing it all to glorious life,”. “I’m enormously proud of ‘Reunion’ and honored to be the first story published in MARVEL’S SNAPSHOTS.” unquote

This year’s long journey begins this March at your local comic book store.

Marvel has postponed the release of issue five, six and seven of X-Men by a month. Issue five will now be out on January 29th, issue six will come on February twelfth and seven will come on the twenty sixth of February.

Geek

We start the Geek news with a record setting opening…and not a good one. Playmobil: The Movie just set the record for the Lowest Box Office for a film opening in over 2000 theatres. The movie based on the toys was sort of an answer to the Lego movie. Unfortunately, Playmobil is not as well known as Lego. Rotten Tomatoes has given the movie a sixteen percent. We will check what it did this weekend and how won the pre Star Wars box office in just a moment.

From one record to another potential record setter. Disney’s Frozen 2 just became the sixth film from the House of Mouse to cross the one billion dollar mark this year.  According to Variety, the movie has over six million internationally and three hundred six million in the US. It’s currently the eighth highest grossing movie of the year. We will see if The Rise of Skywalker makes it seven, it would have just 11 days to do so.

Dark Horse Comics is set to adapt Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology into a mini-series. The book was released back in 2017 and features Neil retelling norse mythology starring Thor, Odin, Loki and others. It has been adapted into a BBC radio production. Next year, it’ll be an 18 issue series adapted by Gaiman and P. Craig Russell with colors fromDave Stewart and Lovern Kindzierski, letters by Galen Showman and art from a round table of artists like Jerry Ordway and Mike Mignola. Norse Mythology will hit comic book stores on May 27th, 2020.

Dynamite Entertainment is getting into the novel business. The company has announced the formation of Dynamite Books. First up is Vampirella: Blood Invasion written by Nancy A Collins. Here’s the blurb quote “In Vampirella: Blood Invasion, Vampirella left her planet of Drakulon on a desperate quest to find another source of blood that her people need to survive. After years out of contact, the skies of Earth fill with an armada of ships from her home planet. Thrilled at first to see her people, Vampirella is horrified to learn of General Orlok’s plan for her adopted planet. She must choose between her own kind or to take up arms with her partner Pantha and join a rebel army led by Count Dracula, Evily the Witch and Doctor Frankenstein and his patchwork monstrosities.” unquote

It’s out now along with a line of audiobook adaptations of existing novels including Shaft The Original Novel by Ernest Tidyman. Dynamite Books plans to release one new novel a month.

So let’s look at this past weekend’s box office.

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/

Finally tonight we say goodbye to someone who was a big part of all of our childhoods, Caroll Spinney. You might not know that name but you’ll know the characters he played on Sesame Street, Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch.

Caroll was born in Waltham Massachusetts on December twenty sixth 1933 and became interested in puppetry at a young age. After high school, he served in the Air Force where he created a comic strip called Harvey. After he left the service he moved to Las Vegas where he performed in the show Rascal Rabbit and a few years later he moved to Boston where he would eventually perform on Boston’s broadcast of Bozo’s Big Top.

IN 1960, he got married to his first wife Janice and had three children, they would divorce in 1971

In 1962, Caroll first met Jim Henson at a puppeteering festival, where Jim asked him if he wanted to talk about the Muppets, unfortunately due to a misunderstanding, Caroll didn’t know that he was being offered a job, He met Henson again in 1969 at a Puppeteer festival in Utah, where he was offered to talk about the muppets again. This time Caroll took him up on the offer and he joined the Muppeteers full time later that year, joining the cast of a new show called Sesame Street.

In 1979, Caroll would get married again this time to Debra jean Gilroy whom he would remain married to the rest of his life.

Unfortunately, Caroll would eventually develop dystonia and in October of last year, Spinney announced his retirement from Sesame Street, handing the role of Big bird to matt Vogel and Oscar to Eric Jacobson.

In his long career, Caroll would win four Daytime Emmys, two Grammys, a gold record, a star of the Hollywood Walk of fame, the Library of Congress Living Legend Award and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Lifetime Achievement Award.

Caroll passed away on December eighth at this home in Connecticut. He was eighty five years old.

Tonight! A Discovery star gets engaged, Rian Johnson has words for diversity haters,  and Disney Plus is doing just fine on this fiftieth edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to the scifi edition of Multiverse Tonight.

Episode fifty, pretty snazzy. I thank all of you watching and listening.

So, have you started watching Disney Plus? What was the first thing you started watching? Probably the Mandalorian. Not me. I watched The Black Hole. Pretty decent sci fi movie for the era. It does what a lot of those movies did in the seventies. Starts with an overture over a black screen before starting the scene like 2001 A Space Odyssey and Star Trek The Motion Picture. It has sort of a draw your own conclusion type of ending. Wonder why Disney hasn’t considered rebooting it?

Anyway, I think Disney Plus is pretty decent for the price, but I do think they need to add a last watched feature to the starting page. Some of us don’t sit down and watch things from beginning to end. I tend to treat things i stream like books, I pick it up, watch it for a while, then put it down.

Anyway let’s get to the news…

Star Trek

The original Star Trek Animated Series will be leaving Netflix in December. According to the info page for the show on Netflix it’s quote available until 12/01/2019. This will be the first Star Trek show to no longer be available on Netflix. Most likely CBS will be bringing it to CBS All Access and the show is also available on Amazon Prime.  Star Trek The Animated Series ran for 22 episodes and for many fans acts as Season Four of the original series. It was also the first Trek series to win an emmy, as it received the Emmy for Outstanding Entertainment Children’s Series in 1975.

While we’re on the subject of Trek animated series, it’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything about the new one. Star Trek Lower Decks is due out next year and comic book dot com talked with voice actor Jack Quaid, who will play Ensign Brad Boimler on the show. Quote “We’re in the middle of recording that now. To get to be a part of that world, in any way, is so cool. That show is just, it’s very different from Harvey Girls. It’s way more adult, but it’s so hilarious and surprisingly sweet and very Trek. Fans of Star Trek will get little inferences and things that we sprinkled throughout the show, but also, I think it’s very accessible for people who don’t know a ton of lore as well. It’s just like a fun show in space.” unquote. Harvey Girls Forever was the actors first voice acting role.

Lower Decks is expected to arrive sometime in 2020.

Congratulations are in order to Star Trek Discovery star Anthony Rapp who tweeted the happy news that he is now engaged to fellow actor Kenneth Mitchell, who has portrayed several Klingon characters on the series. Rapp tweeted quote “So something happened tonight,” “I asked Ken if he would marry me and he said yes. I am so very happy and I’m so very thrilled to share this news.” Rapp plays the first openly gay series regular in a Star Trek show.

Congratulations to the happy couple, Discovery returns in 2020 and season two is now out on Bluray and DVD.

Discovery actor  and comedian Tig Notaro recently spoke with Space dot com. About being in sci fi roles in Discovery and the sci fi movie Lucy in the Sky, she said that she didn’t seek out these sci fi roles but felt quote “…open to that world. “It’s very different,” “I like it, I like being a recurring role on “Star Trek” … I’m not looking to become a full cast member but I enjoy the world, and I enjoy the cast and crew, and I think what I have going on is kind of perfect.” unquote She was a fan of the original series as a child saying quote “I did follow ‘Star Trek’ when I was a child, the original series … obviously I’m more familiar with Discovery now, but I love being a part of it, if just simply for the ability to tell people I am on ‘Star Trek,’ it’s really fun to be able to say that.”  unquote

She also told space dot com that she might enjoy playing characters that work in space, she’s not sure that she would want to go to space herself. Saying quote “I think it’s really exciting and terrifying,” “If I could be in space, I would like to just be teleported; I don’t know that I would want that actually takeoff and journey to outer space.”

“I was just talking to my wife about that; she has absolutely no interest in being in outer space. I don’t think were gonna run into ‘should we go, should we not go?'” “I would bring my sons. I really think they would be interested.”

“It’s fun, I’m proud to be a part of it,” “My sons, they think I actually work in space because whenever I go off to Toronto to film ‘Star Trek,’ I always tell them I have to go work on the space rocket “

Would you like a small statue of Captain Spock in your home? Sideshow and Darkside Collectibles Studio are set to release a one to three scale museum statue of Captain Spock as seen in Star Trek II The Wrath of Kahn. The statue is the spitting image of Lenord Nimoy as his iconic character circa 1982.. It’s 25 inches tall in the iconic monster maroon Starfleet uniform. The statue is made in polystone resin with life like skin details and is limited and individually numbered. Orders are being taken now and it will whip in the fourth quarter of  2020. But be prepared to open your wallet wide, it’ll cost you $1299 or $146.13 a month on a payment plan.

Star Wars

Some people took issues with Star Wars The Last Jedi and the amount of diversity in the casting. Because how dare a galaxy far far away has more than one woman and more than one person of color in any kind of prominent role. If this is you, than Rian Johnson has some strong words for you. While speaking at a live event for WIRED while promoting his new movie Knives Out with Chris Evans, he said quote “If someone’s responding to diversity negatively, f— ’em,” Chris  Evans responded to that quote “If anyone didn’t like the movie, I’m not saying that’s why they didn’t like it… It wasn’t surprising at all to me, I grew up as a Star Wars fan. And I grew up- I was in my twenties when the prequels came out and this whole idea that it’s all been sunshine and roses and suddenly everybody’s yelling at each other is baffling to me.” Rian than added quote “And I feel like people care deeply about Star Wars, and every single person has a slightly different version of what they think Star Wars is. And so much of the fun of it is arguing about it. Since we were kids, right? On the playground, you’re yelling at your friends about who would win in a fight… It’s part and parcel about the passion of being a Star Wars fan.”  Unquote Maybe we should take a page from Frozen and Let it Go?

With the Rise of Skywalker on the way, there’s sure to be more trolls bashing Naomi Ackie, who’s in the movie as a character named Jannah. She however did get some advice about it from someone who got bashed alot Kelly Marie tran. Kelly gave the new Star Wars actor some advice. Naomi shared that advice with Metro quote “I think watching the experience of Kelly Marie Tran and talking to her, I got a lot of inspiration from her about how to grow a thicker skin when it comes to people’s opinions of not just your work, [also] who you are,” “There’s a difference. That’s a challenge but I’m fired up. I feel good about it ultimately.”  unquote

The ramp up for The Rise of Skywalker is in high gear. Daisy Ridley talking with Adoro Cinema about a scene that left her and the crew visibly moved. Quote “There was a scene that touched me a lot,” Ridley told Adoro Cinema. “It was our last day shooting in Jordan and the natural light was fading. And it was so exciting. It was just a short scene, we filmed very fast, but the crew was shaken in a way I had not seen before. And I thought, ‘My God, if this is people’s immediate reaction when the scene isn’t even ready, imagine what it will be like to see it in the movies, with the John Williams soundtrack and all that.’” unquote As to what that scene was I guess we’ll have to wait however, you remember the scene from the trailer with her in dark robes and a double bladed red lightsaber, Daisy did discuss that scene saying quote “That scene was filmed in England in November,” “There were huge water cannons and it was really, really cold. Everybody literally soaked. It was hard, but it was also amazing because the scene caught the immediacy of the reaction.” unquote

Carrie Fisher’s death was heartbreaking. But what might be even more heartbreaking was the plan for Leia that was supposed to occur in the Rise of Skywalker. According to Carrie’s brother Todd Fisher, she was to go full Jedi. Todd, speaking with Yahoo Entertainment said quote “She was going to be the big payoff in this final film,”“That’s what the intent was. She was going to be the last Jedi, so to speak… People used to say to me, ‘Why is it that Carrie never gets a lightsaber and chops up some bad guys?’” unquote A final storyline for Leia was created for the final movie in the Skywalker saga using deleted scenes from The Force Awakens. The Rise of Skywalker comes out in a month.

Star Wars Obi Wan Kenobi Writer Hossein Amini thinks that making a series instead of a movie was the right idea. Amini talked with Discussing Film about the upcoming series. Quote “I think because of what we were speaking about before, the situation is so complex both for him personally and in a way, the state of the galaxy, you sort of need time to explore it and to be honest there are loads of other stories within that period as well, it’s quite a few years,” “There is so much going on between [Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope] that hasn’t been explored. The idea of being able to go into a character journey plus the politics and plus all the vastness of the empire and what’s going on is exciting just because it feels like a proper period of history and sometimes that is hard to do in two hours. Sometimes with two-hour movies there is always an imperative for the action and the plot to move particularly fast and quickly and to go from action sequence to action sequence and there are many more aspects to storytelling that I find interesting.” unquote

No word yet on when the series will come to Disney Plus.

Disney CEO Bob Iger on the latest investor earnings call says that a lot of guests are holding off on visiting the Disneyland and Disney World until the Galaxy’s Edge is fully opened. There is one more e-ticket attraction coming to the Star Wars themed attraction, Star Wars Rise of the Resistance. It will open up in December at Disney World and on January seventeenth at DisneyLand. However even with the lower attendance at the parks it’s still been a good year at the Disney Parks. They’ve seen an eight percent increase in revenue.

Speaking of Mr. Iger, on that same call he announced that the Star Wars films will be taking a little break with Iger saying that their current thinking is that Marvel and Star Wars are more than just movie franchises.  Of course, it’s not like they’re gonna stop making content, there are 3 Star Wars series in production.

Can a third Fantastic Beasts movie be what’s needed to keep the  Harry Potter film franchise going? Warner Bros announced that the third in the Fantastic Beasts franchise will start filming this spring. Even before the launch of Disney Plus, Disney was doing quite well for itself. In its fourth quarter earnings call the studio reported total revenue of 19.1 billion exceeding analysts estimates of 19.04 billion. Toy Story 4 and Aladdin did well for the studio  and even losses on it’s Fox inherited films like Ad Astra, the art of racing in the rain and Dark Phoenix were partially offset by income from tv and streaming. The stock closed up after the launch of Disney Plus. By the way, I must note that I hold a little piece of stock in Disney.

Amazon has given an early renewal for it’s Lord of The Rings series…the show has just begun pre production in New Zeland. The head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Salke has confirmed to Deadline the news that the second season is already in the works during the company’s holiday party at the H Club in Hollywood. Tonight! The She Hulk show gets a pickle rick of a writer, Titans goes for another season and The Batman movie hires some villains all that and more on this comic edition of Multiverse Tonight.

Greetings and welcome to the comics edition of Multiverse Tonight. Episode 51

Still playing Luigi’s Mansion 3 on the Switch. Still going good, although I’m slowing down.

Can you believe we’re already in the end of November? Just a short hop , skip and a jump to the end of the year. At least we have some new Rick and Morty to watch.

Marvel

Disney Plus’ She-Hulk has found a new writer in Rick and Morty writer Jessica Gao. Jessica won an Emmy for writing the Pickle Rick episode. This is the first development for the show since it was announced at D23. This comes after the news that Jeremy Slater, who developed THe Umbrella Academy for Netflix will be overseeing the Moon Knight series. Could the hiring of Jessica Gao show that She-Hulk will have or of a humorous bent?

Marvel head Kevin Fiege in an interview with Bloomberg news told the outlet that the Disney Plus Loki series will directly tie into doctor Strange and the multiverse of madness. It;s not the only Disney Plus series to tie into the movie as WandaVision will as well. The six episode Loki series won’t be out until 2021.

Marvel studios might be doing well today. But the recession almost killed it before it got started. In order for Marvel Studios to get off the ground, in 2005, MarveI needed a huge loan. It got 525 million from Merrill Lynch. It was good timing, in 2008, the great recession happened and that money would have dried up. Talking with The Hollywood reporter’s Scott Feinberg , Kevni Fiege confirms the fact that Merrill Lynch wouldn’t have been able to provide that funding saying quote “That’s a good question I hadn’t thought about. We wouldn’t have gotten the loan afterwards, you’re probably right,” unquote . why? Simple. Merrill Lynch was a casualty of the recession after losing 51.8 billion in the subprime mortgage catastrophe. The company ended up being sold off to Bank of America.

Now here we are almost a decade and a half later and Marvel has billions of dollars.

Zachary Levi was almost Starlord.James Gunn, the maker of the Gaurdians of the Galaxy movies confirmed the fact during a q and a on instagram stories.  According to Mr. Gunns answer to the question about Zacary Levi being considered, James Gunn wrote quote “Yes. And he was amazing,“”So when Peter Safran, the producer of Shazam, came to me asking about who would be good as the character I strongly suggested Zach. I’ve been told by Peter and the DC folks that’s what got the ball rolling. But I think it was #zacharylevi’s immense talent that did that.”

Levi responded to the post on his Instagram saying quote”And brother, it means the absolute world,” “Thanks for seeing that in me, and sharing that conviction with others. It helped literally change my life. I hope we get to work together at some point soon.” unquote

In another universe, it was so. Anyone up for universe hoping?

The Tokyo  burglar nicknamed The Ame-zing Spider Man may have been caught. According to the site FNN.jp, a Mr. Hiroki Horiguchi was arrested on November first for allegedly breaking into a rooftop office in the Tokyo neighborhood of Shinjuku. The 26 year old man allegedly than broke a window, got in and got out with 66,000 yen which is approximately six hundred five dollars american.

Because of the techniques and methods used, they thought that he has the serial burglar dubbed the Ame-szing Spiderman. The burglar had a thing for scaling buildings to get access to his targets. The reason he was called ame-zing is this. All the robberies took place at night that a rainstorm or typhoon took place. Ame is japanese for rain.. The Ame-zing Spider Man is suspected of at least a dozen burglaries.

DC

The CW has officially given the fifth season of Legends of Tomorrow it’s premiere date.

While we’re on the CW verse The Flash star Danielle Panabaker announced that she and husband Hays Robbins are expecting their first child. Danielle announced it via instagram with a photo of herself eating breakfast with the caption eating for two with a winking face emoji. According to a report a report from People magazine, the couple will welcome their child in the spring of 2020. Danielle and Hays got married back in 2017.

Author Neil Gaiman, speaking with Radio times gave an update on The Sandman series that’s being made for Netflix. He told the program quote “There are three of us, showrunner [Allan] Heinberg, [David S.] Goyer and me, and we’ve just finished writing the first episode, and plotting and breaking down the first two seasons, so we’ll see what happens next.” unquote. No second season has been officially greenlit and no word has come forth on casting, production or release dates.

DC Universe and Warner Bros Television have officially announced that Titans will be coming back for a third season. The series debuted on the streaming service in 2018 and is currently in the midst of it’s second season. The second season has seen the team of young heroes face off against Deathstroke. The third season will arrive in the fall of 2020.

California is still suffering from fires if you’ll remember my interview with Orville Producer Tom Costantino, that interview had been delayed from the week before due to a fire that caused his family to be under a voluntary evacuation order. Now Deadline reports that the warner Bros lot had to be evacuated as a precautionary measure after a small brush fire broke out in the hollyWood Hills near the studio.

The Barham fire started near 3694 North Barham Blvd. Which is just about a half mile from the

Warners studio lot, around 152 in the afternoon of  Saturday November 2nd. Luckily by 510 pm that day the Los angeles fire department reported that forward progress had been stopped. By that point the fire had burned 34 acres in the hills between Burbank and Universal City.

Speaking of Warner Bros, the studio has announced that it’s updating its logo. The logo is a now elongated blue shield with the letters WB on it.  It harkens back to how the logo looked in the 1930’s. The new logo will begin appearing on the companies productions starting in early 2020. If you’d like to look at all the different variations on the wb logo I’ll have a link to a site that has a detailed history of the different permutations of the iconic logo.http://annyas.com/screenshots/warner-bros-logo/

We got some Batman casting news. First off The Batman director Matt Reeves confirmed on twitter that Andy Serkis will play the role of Alfred Pennyworth. He joins Robbert Pattinson has Batman, Jeffery Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, newcomer Jayme Lawson will be playing a new character named Bella who is a grassroots political candidate running for office …or is that a ruse and  she’s playing Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl and Paul Dano from There Will be Blood has been cast as Edward Nashton aka The Riddler

It looks like it’s truly the end of the line for Batman’s father figure slash butler. Alfred Pennyworth. DC has confirmed that he was indeed killed by Bane. His death will be explored in Batman: Pennyworth R.I.P. a new one shot by James Tynion the fourth and Peter J Tomasi with art by Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira. Here’ s the description quote “Alfred Pennyworth served the Wayne family for decades—even through the terrible loss of the Dark Knight’s parents. His shocking death at the hands of Bane is the only event that could possibly compare to that fateful night in Crime Alley, and it leaves Bruce at a similar crossroads. If Alfred was the glue that held the Bat-Family together, how will Batman deal with that all falling apart? And if the Caped Crusader is to be truly alone, he might either hang that cape up once and for all…or double down and carry on with this vengeful quest forever.

Batman: Pennyworth R.I.P. celebrates the life of one of the most important people in the history of Gotham City, while also addressing questions about what’s next.” The issue comes out on February 12th, 2020.

So you’re watching Disney Plus and your bring up the Simpsons and are dismayed that they’re being presented not in their original aspect ratio of 4:3 but in the zoomed in 16:9 ratio. Well you’re cries of anguish has been heard. Disney in a statement said quote “We presented “The Simpsons” in 16:9 aspect ratio at launch in order to guarantee visual quality and consistency across all 30 seasons. Over time, Disney+ will roll out new features and additional viewing options. As part of this, in early 2020, Disney+ will make the first 19 seasons (and some episodes from Season 20) of “The Simpsons” available in their original 4:3 aspect ratio, giving subscribers a choice of how they prefer to view the popular series.” unquote During season 20 was when the show went to the 16:9 aspect ratio of today.

We talked a few minutes ago about how Warner Bros has looked to the past to update their logo. Now Deadline reports that Warners is bringing back Rin Tin Tin, the German Shepard that was credited with saving the studio in the 1920’s.

Matt Lieberman, who wrote the upcoming animated movie Scoob and the animated Addams Family movie will be writing the new movie. The movie will be made with Andrew Lazar’s Mad Chance productions along with rights holders Sasha Jenson and Jeff Miller. Apparently the plan is to make the dog the John Wick of dogs. A hero elite military dog on a covert mission to stop a large scale attack. So if John Wick saw the dog got killed, Does Rin Tin Tins humans get killed?

HOcus Pocus 2…is probably something we don’t need. However since it’s gonna get made let’s check in on where it is. The Hollywood Reporter asked Sarah Jessica Parker about it. Asking if she knows anything, she said quote No, I don’t know. There has never been a conversation ever in our lives. Someone just asked me on Instagram, and I said: “We all said we’d love to someday.” But that’s the extent of the conversation. I’ve been asked so much recently about this — it’s a seasonal question… it’s appropriate! Unquote The reporter than added an addendum to the answer in the article quote [When asked, “Any chance of a sequel?” last week on Instagram, Parker responded: “We have all said yes. Now we wait.”] unquote

Sin City is coming tv thanks to Legendary TV. The producer has struck a deal with author Frank Miller to adapt the series of comics into a tv series. The studio is currently looking for a distribution deal and they are close to a deal with Robert Rodriguez who directed the feature film version. The deal with Frank Miller also calls for an animate prequel as well.  Frank Miller regained the film and tv right to sin city just last year.

Show Notes: Episode 48:Opening a Channel to The Orville & Episode 49: Dancing Down the Joker Steps

Tonight! Ewan McGregor finally gets to spill the beans, Could Janeway get a monument? And we talk about The Orville with a special guest  on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to the scifi edition of Multiverse Tonight.

So how was your Halloween? My wife and I had about 50 kids over the night. Not a lot of costumes as it was kinda cold. And then we had the time warp again a few days later, Daylight Savings time needs to be abolished. It’s no good for anyone. Especially me, I don’t get an extra hour of sleep, I get an extra hour of work at my job.

This episode we have an interview with Tom Costantino. An interview that we would have recorded last week except, he had to prep his family for a voluntary evacuation from a fire that was in the LA area.

Anyway, Let’s start with the news…

Star Wars

We start with Star Wars news and Ewan McGregor who must feel so much better now that the news has been announced that he will be returning to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi for a Disney Plus series. The actor told Men’s Journal that quote “It’s a fucking massive relief,” “Because for four years, I’ve been having to lie to people about it.” unquote. However he’s only being allowed to say that the show will be six hour long episodes. He also reveals that the story quote sits between Episode III and Episode IV unquote He also wants to quote “…get closer and closer to how Obi-Wan felt while Alec Guinness was playing him. I feel like I’m grayer and nearer him in age, so it’ll be easier to do that.” unquote  I can see it. Right now ewan is just 17 years younger than Alec Guiness was when the film debuted.

Filming on the show will start in the summer of 2020 and will debut on Disney Plus in 2021.

The trailer for the Rise of Skywalker was big news and now the movie is showing up in everything including The United Airlines In Flight Safety video

https://youtu.be/21hbvm69i4k

And speaking of the movie it smashed pre sale records in its first 24 hours, the JJ Abrams helmed movie has racked up more advanced ticket sales than any previous title in the series according to Atom tickets. Tickets went on sale after the trailer was released during Monday Night Football. It is also Atom tickets second biggest title in first day sales behind Avengers Endgame and has sold two and a half as many tickets as The Last Jedi. Although this has come with controversy from some circles saying that some entity bought up tickets in blocks in order to achieve this. I try to stay out of rumors until I see actual proof.

In a stunner this past Tuesday, it was reported that Game of Thrones tv creators David Benioff and DB Weiss are out of a planned new Star Wars trilogy that had been announced over a year ago. Benioff and Weiss in a statement said quote “We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too,” . “Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything. But there are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.” The first of the trilogy would have been out on December  sixteenth of 2022. This news comes after last months revelation that Kevin Feige was developing a Star Wars movie. Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm did express her appreciation of Benioff and Weiss and hoped to work with them in the future when their schedules weren’t so busy. However the duo did just sign a five year two hundred fifty million dollar deal with Netflix, so I guess they will be tied up for some time. Maybe Disney and Lucasfilm should ask for open submissions for the next trilogy?

So why have so many directors come and gone from the franchise? Apparently the answer might be creative control. According to a piece in Variety, in the beginning the filmmakers were promised a level of creative control. However multiple insiders that talked to Variety new ideas were commonly shot down as it seems that Kenedy and her team wanted people to stick to the company line.

Benioff and Weiss would have explored the distant past of the universe to explore how the Jedi came to be.  However the studio and the pair started to diverge on their vision for the new trilogy

Apparently the final straw was after pair signed their deal with Netflix, and Kathleen Kennedy not believing that they could focus on both projects at the same time.

I’m not going to recap the entire article here, but the article is fascinating and there’ll be a link to it in the show notes. https://variety.com/2019/film/features/star-wars-kathleen-kennedy-david-benioff-db-weiss-1203388611/

Let’s get to that interview with The Orville Associate Producer and Editor Tom Costantino.

Thomas Townley: My guest today is part of one of my favorite shows, The Orville. He joins us from the Fox studio lot in Los Angeles. Please walk up my associate producer and editor Tom Costantino.

Tom Costantino: Yes, thank you. Actually they gave me a bump. It’s co-producer, hope producer.

Thomas Townley: Well, congratulations.

Tom Costantino: Oh yeah, it’s just a more, more work. [inaudible]

Thomas Townley: okay. Now, well, start off by telling us more about yourself and what you do on the show.

Tom Costantino: Uh, well I, uh, I’m, I’m happy to also be the supervising editor. I started on the pilots and have been here ever since. Um, I’m sort of in charge of all picture cutting and uh, I have some various other responsibilities which some above some of the things with social media, uh, comic con, uh, and a lot of other minutiae that I would never dare to bore you with. But uh, there is a lot, there’s a lot of big shows, so there’s a lot to do. So we all, it’s all hands on deck.

Thomas Townley: Okay. And what would you say this is the best part of your job?

Tom Costantino: Best part of my job actually is doing stuff like this, getting, having, having a real time interaction with, um, with uh, people who are very appreciative of the show and just, and, and also the fact that I’m a huge, you know, I mean I’m a huge scifi nerd and star Trek fan and I never thought that this font of useless information somehow earned me a living.

Thomas Townley: Well, I am deeply honored. Um, now some news dropped yesterday, deadline.com reported that Anne Winters as joining the cast as a series regular. Can you tell me anything about what her role is on the show?

Tom Costantino: I, unfortunately, I can’t, but she does play an integral part of the show and she’s awesome. Uh, sitting behind you. I have some dailies of her and, uh, yeah, we’re happy to, happy to have her. Um, but, uh, you know, a contrary to popular opinion. She’s not replacing Adrian. That’s all I’m going to say. That’s that. No, she’s a, yeah, she’s a, she’ll be with us, uh, this season and she’s gonna fit right into this crazy cookie bunch.

Thomas Townley: Awesome. And, uh, well, right now, where are you in the filming of the season?

Tom Costantino: Uh, we are, we are, uh, we’re, we’re only a few weeks into filming, uh, and we’re, uh, you know, we’re working on the first episode and some of the, uh, some subsequent other early episodes, uh, were not quite block shooting, but we’re trying to, you know, uh, you know, gather as much material as possible. Um, so, uh, yeah, we’re, we’re basically part of the way through the first episode and some others, not much past the third. Okay. It’s a nonlinear answer to a two or a nonlinear question. The, normally I would say, you know, I would have a more definitive answer, but we’re, we’re trying to gather as much material as possible.

Thomas Townley: Oh yeah. And, uh, I know, I know you have an, an NDA. There’s not really much you can tell us. Is there, is there any way, any kind of a hint you can give us.

Tom Costantino: about.

Thomas Townley: anything.

Tom Costantino: specifically? Uh, well, I kind of said this before, so I don’t want to be cliche, but, uh, you know, a lot of the, a lot of the story threads that people were loving in season two and season one, they will not be forgotten. You know, we’re not going to ever be serialized. It’s not our, it’s not our style, but we, we’re not going to forget our history. So I can totally say that. And you know, uh, I, I, this has been said before, but, but it’s true. You know, we had an identity part two and uh, tomorrow, sorry, that’s tomorrow. That’s the 12th day you have a road not taken. You know, we had like two of those and then some other ones, but now we have like seven of them. So…

Thomas Townley: Awesome.

Tom Costantino: Yeah. So we’re bigger.

Thomas Townley: Okay. And, uh, was kinda been your favorite episode so far?

Tom Costantino: Yeah. Ever?

Thomas Townley: Yeah.

Tom Costantino: Uh, you know, it’s a fight for me between, I mean, they’re, they’re all our babies, but, uh, you know, I have a soft spot for the Clare Isaac narrative, so I always will love , Into the Fold and A Happy Refrain, but I thought, you know, having to sit on the finale, uh, you know, that was, that was the most gratifying to sort of like live scroll that on Twitter and, and uh, so, so, but, uh, but I mean, as for my softspot, I would say it’s A Happy Refrain.

Thomas Townley: Cool. And, uh, has, as we know, this, uh, third season is going onto Hulu and they sent you some cookies I saw.

Tom Costantino: Yeah. Oh, good. Oh good. They looked good. Yeah, they’re sure. And they were like, they were like a shortbread cookies or something. I got one of the last ones. I didn’t even take that picture.

Thomas Townley: And, uh, also since, uh, Fox(sic, Disney) has merged with Hulu. Has, has Disney had any kind of contact or influence on the show yet?

Tom Costantino: Uh, yeah, I wouldn’t say influenced, but they’ve been very receptive. Uh, you know, we had a kickoff meeting with them, sort of catching them up on stuff. I mean, uh, you know,It’s mostly business as usual. We, we’ve been pretty lucky in terms of like, Fox has been really understanding in terms of, you know, what the show is and how much larger it can be than sort of network shows. And that’s why they kind of, you know, allowed the Hulu transition. And um, yeah, I mean there hasn’t been any sort of like, you know, any, I mean, I think people make bigger, not you personally, but they make bigger stories or like, you know, like, Oh my God, the corporate overlords are coming in. No, no, it’s not, you know, it’s not like that. I mean, there’s definitely infrastructure changes and really boring stuff, but everyone’s been pretty supportive so far. I, it’s, it’s, you know, it’s hard to, it’s hard to deny cause I’ve heard of other situations, but now granted we’re early into it. I mean, who knows? Ask me again in a year.

Thomas Townley: Okay. And, uh, well since you’re under the Disney umbrella, the Muppets are also under that Disney umbrella as well. Could you see other Muppets or than Kermit show up on the show, perhaps in the environment simulator?

Tom Costantino: Oh my God. I don’t know if we’ve ever, ever explored that a, I think we did get Kermit cleared. Um, I think there’s probably some legal loopholes we’ve got to get through, but I would also say that we probably have some other, probably pretty fun guest stars and other things before we’ll get to the Kermit stuff and the miss piggy stuff. However, that would be awesome to recreate that in the simulator.

Thomas Townley: Yeah. You don’t want, you know, I like to see, I’d like to see Ed jamming with Rowlf the dog.

Tom Costantino: Really? Yeah, I’ll mention that to Seth.

Thomas Townley: Yeah, that would, I think would be, that would be a really cool combo right there.

Tom Costantino: I love Rowlf.

Thomas Townley: Oh yeah. Oh yeah.

Tom Costantino: Originally. I mean, I’m assuming, I’m assuming maybe we can do, maybe we can link some of them with pigs in space or something and then we’re like, we’relike [inaudible]

Thomas Townley: Ooh, that’d be, that’d be cool right there. That’d be awesome. Um, okay, now you’re, you’re in your third season. Do you see, could you see any chance of an Orville movie in the far future?

Tom Costantino: Yeah, I mean, be honest if, if, if everyone’s willing and Seth is, it’s really, if Seth has it in him and, and, and the fates are right, sure. Why not? I think we’re all open. We’re all here as a labor of love. So I would imagine if, if he wanted to do it and people wanted to pay for it, that we would all stick around and try and, you know, blow people’s socks off for two hours and some odd minutes.

Thomas Townley: All right,

Tom Costantino: now I won’t rule it out.

Thomas Townley: Now let’s take a take a turn into merchandising here. Now the Orville has a comic books from Dark Horse comics and they’ve been very well received. Are there any plans for a novel based on the series?

Tom Costantino: Plans for a novel…. You know, I will, I will get you an answer. I don’t, I have not heard anything about a novel. I know that there might be more things in the vein of comic books, but if anywhere person were to do it, it would be, it would be Mr. David Goodman, Uber talented David Goodman. So next time I see him I will ask him, which will probably be tomorrow because I’ll see him on set.

Thomas Townley: Cool.

Tom Costantino: But that’s a good question. I actually actually don’t know. You know, we’re just starting to see fan films, which is exciting. So I’m just going to have that.

Thomas Townley: [inaudible] cause cause that would, that would really go over well with me. I love, I love the old star Trek novels.

Tom Costantino: really.

Thomas Townley: back in the day and, and the Orville would seem like something that would go great with a novel.

Tom Costantino: Well, I think the comic was that basic idea, but I could imagine a world where, you know, where that, that can happen. But, uh, I, it’s funny, it’s one of those, it’s one of the few loopholes. I haven’t really, one of the things I haven’t really heard much about or been involved or there’s toys and other things come on away, but, uh, that I will check into.

Thomas Townley: Excellent. And finally, what is your favorite scifi show? Other than The Orville?

Tom Costantino: *grabs a Battlestar Galactica Colonel Viper ship and slaps it on the desk*

Thomas Townley: Battlestar Galactica.

Tom Costantino: I rarely have a visual aid, but you happen that I don’t know if you time that, but yeah, yeah, no, I mean, of course I love star Wars and you know, all these old Star Wars and uh, I mean, I, I mean as fan I like some more obscure stuff, but uh, you know, like the black hole and stuff. But, but the, uh, more than anything, these guys also have Doug Drexler down the hall. He gave me this. So cool. You know, that’s the most exciting thing so far of being able to interact with my, I don’t want to make them that much older than me, my childhood hero, but my hero of postproduction and makeup. So yes, I would say BSG.

Thomas Townley: Alright, awesome. Well, thank you very much for your time, Tom. And the…

Tom Costantino: I’m saying this publicly, apologize about the fires last week. Kind of screwed up our last meeting.

Thomas Townley: Oh, that’s it. That’s okay. You know, I hope you and everyone out there stay safe during the wildfire season. And uh, I hope we can talk again once the Orville debuts on Hulu next year.

Tom Costantino: Yes, please. We’d love to, I’ll bring, I’ll bring some friends. We’ll do, we’ll do some more and uh, but before then I will definitely get you to answer about the novels.

Thomas Townley: Oh, cool. Thank you. Thank you very much.

Tom Costantino: Alright, you have a good one.

Thomas Townley: You too.

Tom Costantino: We’ll talk soon. All right, bye.

Good interview.

Tonight! The Bronx says stop dancing down our steps, Superman gets a new series and The Spiderverse comes again on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to the comics edition of Multiverse Tonight.

A few days ago I started playing Luigi’s Mansion 3 for the Nintendo Switch and it’s a very good game. However it is one that you will need to limber up your fingers for it. It uses almost all the buttons in rapid succession.

By the way, if you’ve been watching HBO’s Watchmen, be sure to look at the Peteypedia on the shows website. It’s full of all sorts of backgoround on what’s happening in that weeks episode.

I hope you tuned into the last episode, I had a great interview with Associate Producer and Editor Tom Constantino from the Orville, if you wanna hear what he said, just go back one episode in the feed.

Let’s get one with the news

DC

So you love the Joker movie and want to recreate Joaquin Phoenix’s dance down that set of stairs. That set of stairs is in the Bronx neighborhood of New York  at the corner of Shakespeare and Anderson in Highbridge and you might not want to go there. According to a report, residents of the community aren’t thrilled with the attention and one man decided to send a message by throwing eggs at some of the tourists descending the staircase. The man even videode himself and uploaded it to twitter shouting at the people quote “Y’all not spending no money in my store, but come and take pictures. Get the f*** out of here!” unquote In other words, be kind, spend a dime.

Brandon Routh is saying Goodbye to Legends of Tomorrow. The Former Superman, current The Atom star said goodbye via Instagram saying quote “My final day of filming with my #LegendsFamily. I love you all & appreciate the 5 seasons we’ve spent together.

It hasn’t always been easy, but I think that’s what makes it harder to leave—getting through the growing pains of the first few seasons has bonded us. 👊🏻 And made the last three seasons a blast! I’ve never been at a job this long, so this is new for me. 😢 I think I will miss you all and the fun we’ve had making this silly show on the #Waverider—as much as I’ll miss bringing #RayPalmer to life. Love & blessings on a great finish to the season. 🙏🏼❤️❤️❤️”

Both Routh and his wife Courney Ford who plays Nora Darhk are leaving the series. Series Executive Producers Phill Klemmer, Grainne Godfree and Keto Shimizu told Deadline quote “Brandon and Courtney have been invaluable members of the Legends family,” “They have always brought a level of passion and collaboration to their characters and to the show — both on and off the screen – that we deeply admire and for which we are eternally grateful.”

Speaking of endings. Arrow co-creator took to Twitter to explain the meaning behind the series finale’s title “Fadeout” in the post he displayed a drawing of a bow with callouts to what all the parts of the weapon . He circled the bottom of the bow which is called the Fadeout. Wonder if Starling city will be destroyed one time…

Warner Bros tangentially Batman related Joker has passed Deadpool 2 to become the highest rated R rated movie. The film has totaled over 790 million dollars.. Deadpool 2 grossed in 785 million last year and the first deadpool garnered 782 million. Ryan Renolds congratulated Joker with a tweet saying quote “R-rated box office congratulatory posts aren’t like the ones you’re used to.” unquote . That was because it came with a redone pic of the movie poster with the words you mother f*cker , heart Deadpool , Neo, Pennywise, Jesus, Hugh Jackman, the Wolfpack, Mr. Grey, Ted

Batwoman’s ratings have slowly slipped down since the premiere, but the CW has confidence in the show giving it and Nancy Drew full season pickups. CW went on to emphasize that both shows Plus 3 and Plus 7 numbers are doing good. With double digit gains. Not only have they given batwoman a full season they have extended the season order from 13 to 22.

Lucifer is in the midst of filming its final season and Kelly Calrkson on her talk show got to visit the set with her mother and sister, while there Tom Ellis announced that the sixteen episode season will be split in two saying quote “Season 5 of Lucifer is going to be split into two halves. Netflix are gonna drop eight episodes and then there’s gonna be a little break, and then they’re gonna drop another eight episodes.” unquote There will also be a special black and white 1940’s themed episode with a musical flair. The release date has not been announced.

Wonder Woman 1984 director has all but confirmed that Pedro Pascal will play Maxwell Lord. She tweeted a pic of the character from the comics with “Well hello…Max” #WW1984 she tagged Pedro Pascal in the post, which is what is leading the speculation that Pedro will be Max.  The character was created back in 1987 and debuted in Justice League number one. He was first just a backer of the league but later turned into a more sinister character. Wonder Woman 1984 opens in theaters on June fifth, 2020. Seems like they better get crackin on that movie…

Superman is returning to tv. Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch will play the titular characters in Superman & Lois. Former Flash showrunner todd Helbing will be writing and executive producing the new series. And will follow Lois and Clark as they deal with all the problems of being working parents in today’s society. Of course, you know that Greg Brelanti will be executive producing the show alongside Helbing, Berlanti Productions Sarah Schechter and DC’s Geoff Johns.

The CW is also working on a female focused arrow spinoff with Katherine McNamara, Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy. So when will the CW just become the DCW already.

Marvel

One of the best jokes in Avengers Endgame was Captain America looking at his past self lying face down on the ground and remarking “This is America’s Ass. In an interview with Syfy Wire Endgame writer Christopher Marcus explained that originally it was only Tony Stark and Ant-man on the joke. But then it grew. He told them quote “It sort of grew on its own,” “The first thing that was there was Tony looking at Cap’s terrible Avengers outfit and going, ‘that suit does nothing for your ass.’ That stood on its own for a while, and then Ant-Man was added to the scene, and he said, ‘I think that’s America’s ass.’ And that was the joke for a while.” unquote His writing partner Stephen McFeely decided to add Cap in on the joke during the reshoots he told Syfy Wire quote “We redid the Cap on Cap fight, the ending of it, and that helped us tremendously,” “And then we needed to get out of that scene a little differently, and there [2012 Cap] was, slumped on the ground with his butt in the air.” unquote And movie magic was born.

By the way, Christopher Markus also talked with CinemaBlend and told the site that he would like to see MODOK as the next big bad. Quote “I always go back to the guy I always want to see on screen, which is MODOK,” “Also, part of me… it’s hard to say if he was officially destroyed, I wouldn’t mind seeing a third incarnation of Zola. Now in a robotic body. We got him from human to face on screen, I’d like him to get mobile now. I can’t say that’s going to happen, but it’d be fun.”

MODOK aka Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing was originally a guy named George Tarleton who was mutated after an accident that made his head huge and required a special hoverchair to move around. He first appeared in Tales of Suspense #93 back in 1967.

Payton reed is making it a three peat has the director has signed on to do the third movie in the Ant-man franchise, deadline has confirmed. Quiara Alegría Hudes, Miranda’s collaborator on In the Heights, wrote the script with  The Croods director Kirk De Micco is directing.

A report from variety might spell a problem for Marvel’s Hawkeye series. Hailee Steinfeld is supposed to be up for the lead role in the series, but  she already has a role on Apple Plus’ Dickenson. When asked about it at the premiere for the show, she played coy about it saying quote “That, I don’t know about!” she said, seemingly caught off guard. “I don’t know,”“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Sources have told Variety that her deal with Apple might preclude her taking a role on a competing streaming service, although her team could always negotiate a fix for that.

If more detail comes out, I’ll let you know.
