Tonight! Ewan McGregor finally gets to spill the beans, Could Janeway get a monument? And we talk about The Orville with a special guest on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!
Welcome to the scifi edition of Multiverse Tonight.
So how was your Halloween? My wife and I had about 50 kids over the night. Not a lot of costumes as it was kinda cold. And then we had the time warp again a few days later, Daylight Savings time needs to be abolished. It’s no good for anyone. Especially me, I don’t get an extra hour of sleep, I get an extra hour of work at my job.
This episode we have an interview with Tom Costantino. An interview that we would have recorded last week except, he had to prep his family for a voluntary evacuation from a fire that was in the LA area.
Anyway, Let’s start with the news…
We start with Star Wars news and Ewan McGregor who must feel so much better now that the news has been announced that he will be returning to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi for a Disney Plus series. The actor told Men’s Journal that quote “It’s a fucking massive relief,” “Because for four years, I’ve been having to lie to people about it.” unquote. However he’s only being allowed to say that the show will be six hour long episodes. He also reveals that the story quote sits between Episode III and Episode IV unquote He also wants to quote “…get closer and closer to how Obi-Wan felt while Alec Guinness was playing him. I feel like I’m grayer and nearer him in age, so it’ll be easier to do that.” unquote I can see it. Right now ewan is just 17 years younger than Alec Guiness was when the film debuted.
Filming on the show will start in the summer of 2020 and will debut on Disney Plus in 2021.
The trailer for the Rise of Skywalker was big news and now the movie is showing up in everything including The United Airlines In Flight Safety video
And speaking of the movie it smashed pre sale records in its first 24 hours, the JJ Abrams helmed movie has racked up more advanced ticket sales than any previous title in the series according to Atom tickets. Tickets went on sale after the trailer was released during Monday Night Football. It is also Atom tickets second biggest title in first day sales behind Avengers Endgame and has sold two and a half as many tickets as The Last Jedi. Although this has come with controversy from some circles saying that some entity bought up tickets in blocks in order to achieve this. I try to stay out of rumors until I see actual proof.
In a stunner this past Tuesday, it was reported that Game of Thrones tv creators David Benioff and DB Weiss are out of a planned new Star Wars trilogy that had been announced over a year ago. Benioff and Weiss in a statement said quote “We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too,” . “Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything. But there are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.” The first of the trilogy would have been out on December sixteenth of 2022. This news comes after last months revelation that Kevin Feige was developing a Star Wars movie. Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm did express her appreciation of Benioff and Weiss and hoped to work with them in the future when their schedules weren’t so busy. However the duo did just sign a five year two hundred fifty million dollar deal with Netflix, so I guess they will be tied up for some time. Maybe Disney and Lucasfilm should ask for open submissions for the next trilogy?
So why have so many directors come and gone from the franchise? Apparently the answer might be creative control. According to a piece in Variety, in the beginning the filmmakers were promised a level of creative control. However multiple insiders that talked to Variety new ideas were commonly shot down as it seems that Kenedy and her team wanted people to stick to the company line.
Benioff and Weiss would have explored the distant past of the universe to explore how the Jedi came to be. However the studio and the pair started to diverge on their vision for the new trilogy
Apparently the final straw was after pair signed their deal with Netflix, and Kathleen Kennedy not believing that they could focus on both projects at the same time.
I’m not going to recap the entire article here, but the article is fascinating and there’ll be a link to it in the show notes. https://variety.com/2019/film/features/star-wars-kathleen-kennedy-david-benioff-db-weiss-1203388611/

Unquote The ten episode first season will arrive on Netflix on December fifth. Just in time for Christmas.
Speaking of Netflix, they have renewed Katee Sackhoff’s series Another Life for season two. The series, which centers on Sackhoff’s astronaut Niko Breckinridge and her crew as they take on a high risk mission to investigate and alien artifact and find extraterrestrial intelligence. The ten episode season will begin production in 2020. Season one is out now.
Disney Plus will not rotate it’s content like other streaming service once the service debuts on the eleventh. A spokesman for Disney Plus confirmed to comicbook dot com that nothing licensed will be rotated each month and nothing from Disney’s Signature Collection will be rotated in or out. This is a change from the past when Disney used to bring out a classic movie for a limited time and the then put it back in the quote “Disney Vault” unquote
Let’s get to that interview with The Orville Associate Producer and Editor Tom Costantino.
Thomas Townley: My guest today is part of one of my favorite shows, The Orville. He joins us from the Fox studio lot in Los Angeles. Please walk up my associate producer and editor Tom Costantino.
Tom Costantino: Yes, thank you. Actually they gave me a bump. It’s co-producer, hope producer.
Thomas Townley: Well, congratulations.
Tom Costantino: Oh yeah, it’s just a more, more work. [inaudible]
Thomas Townley: okay. Now, well, start off by telling us more about yourself and what you do on the show.
Tom Costantino: Uh, well I, uh, I’m, I’m happy to also be the supervising editor. I started on the pilots and have been here ever since. Um, I’m sort of in charge of all picture cutting and uh, I have some various other responsibilities which some above some of the things with social media, uh, comic con, uh, and a lot of other minutiae that I would never dare to bore you with. But uh, there is a lot, there’s a lot of big shows, so there’s a lot to do. So we all, it’s all hands on deck.
Thomas Townley: Okay. And what would you say this is the best part of your job?
Tom Costantino: Best part of my job actually is doing stuff like this, getting, having, having a real time interaction with, um, with uh, people who are very appreciative of the show and just, and, and also the fact that I’m a huge, you know, I mean I’m a huge scifi nerd and star Trek fan and I never thought that this font of useless information somehow earned me a living.
Thomas Townley: Well, I am deeply honored. Um, now some news dropped yesterday, deadline.com reported that Anne Winters as joining the cast as a series regular. Can you tell me anything about what her role is on the show?
Tom Costantino: I, unfortunately, I can’t, but she does play an integral part of the show and she’s awesome. Uh, sitting behind you. I have some dailies of her and, uh, yeah, we’re happy to, happy to have her. Um, but, uh, you know, a contrary to popular opinion. She’s not replacing Adrian. That’s all I’m going to say. That’s that. No, she’s a, yeah, she’s a, she’ll be with us, uh, this season and she’s gonna fit right into this crazy cookie bunch.
Thomas Townley: Awesome. And, uh, well, right now, where are you in the filming of the season?
Tom Costantino: Uh, we are, we are, uh, we’re, we’re only a few weeks into filming, uh, and we’re, uh, you know, we’re working on the first episode and some of the, uh, some subsequent other early episodes, uh, were not quite block shooting, but we’re trying to, you know, uh, you know, gather as much material as possible. Um, so, uh, yeah, we’re, we’re basically part of the way through the first episode and some others, not much past the third. Okay. It’s a nonlinear answer to a two or a nonlinear question. The, normally I would say, you know, I would have a more definitive answer, but we’re, we’re trying to gather as much material as possible.
Thomas Townley: Oh yeah. And, uh, I know, I know you have an, an NDA. There’s not really much you can tell us. Is there, is there any way, any kind of a hint you can give us.
Tom Costantino: about.
Thomas Townley: anything.
Tom Costantino: specifically? Uh, well, I kind of said this before, so I don’t want to be cliche, but, uh, you know, a lot of the, a lot of the story threads that people were loving in season two and season one, they will not be forgotten. You know, we’re not going to ever be serialized. It’s not our, it’s not our style, but we, we’re not going to forget our history. So I can totally say that. And you know, uh, I, I, this has been said before, but, but it’s true. You know, we had an identity part two and uh, tomorrow, sorry, that’s tomorrow. That’s the 12th day you have a road not taken. You know, we had like two of those and then some other ones, but now we have like seven of them. So…
Thomas Townley: Awesome.
Tom Costantino: Yeah. So we’re bigger.
Thomas Townley: Okay. And, uh, was kinda been your favorite episode so far?
Tom Costantino: Yeah. Ever?
Thomas Townley: Yeah.
Tom Costantino: Uh, you know, it’s a fight for me between, I mean, they’re, they’re all our babies, but, uh, you know, I have a soft spot for the Clare Isaac narrative, so I always will love , Into the Fold and A Happy Refrain, but I thought, you know, having to sit on the finale, uh, you know, that was, that was the most gratifying to sort of like live scroll that on Twitter and, and uh, so, so, but, uh, but I mean, as for my softspot, I would say it’s A Happy Refrain.
Thomas Townley: Cool. And, uh, has, as we know, this, uh, third season is going onto Hulu and they sent you some cookies I saw.
Tom Costantino: Yeah. Oh, good. Oh good. They looked good. Yeah, they’re sure. And they were like, they were like a shortbread cookies or something. I got one of the last ones. I didn’t even take that picture.
Thomas Townley: And, uh, also since, uh, Fox(sic, Disney) has merged with Hulu. Has, has Disney had any kind of contact or influence on the show yet?
Tom Costantino: Uh, yeah, I wouldn’t say influenced, but they’ve been very receptive. Uh, you know, we had a kickoff meeting with them, sort of catching them up on stuff. I mean, uh, you know,It’s mostly business as usual. We, we’ve been pretty lucky in terms of like, Fox has been really understanding in terms of, you know, what the show is and how much larger it can be than sort of network shows. And that’s why they kind of, you know, allowed the Hulu transition. And um, yeah, I mean there hasn’t been any sort of like, you know, any, I mean, I think people make bigger, not you personally, but they make bigger stories or like, you know, like, Oh my God, the corporate overlords are coming in. No, no, it’s not, you know, it’s not like that. I mean, there’s definitely infrastructure changes and really boring stuff, but everyone’s been pretty supportive so far. I, it’s, it’s, you know, it’s hard to, it’s hard to deny cause I’ve heard of other situations, but now granted we’re early into it. I mean, who knows? Ask me again in a year.
Thomas Townley: Okay. And, uh, well since you’re under the Disney umbrella, the Muppets are also under that Disney umbrella as well. Could you see other Muppets or than Kermit show up on the show, perhaps in the environment simulator?
Tom Costantino: Oh my God. I don’t know if we’ve ever, ever explored that a, I think we did get Kermit cleared. Um, I think there’s probably some legal loopholes we’ve got to get through, but I would also say that we probably have some other, probably pretty fun guest stars and other things before we’ll get to the Kermit stuff and the miss piggy stuff. However, that would be awesome to recreate that in the simulator.
Thomas Townley: Yeah. You don’t want, you know, I like to see, I’d like to see Ed jamming with Rowlf the dog.
Tom Costantino: Really? Yeah, I’ll mention that to Seth.
Thomas Townley: Yeah, that would, I think would be, that would be a really cool combo right there.
Tom Costantino: I love Rowlf.
Thomas Townley: Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
Tom Costantino: Originally. I mean, I’m assuming, I’m assuming maybe we can do, maybe we can link some of them with pigs in space or something and then we’re like, we’relike [inaudible]
Thomas Townley: Ooh, that’d be, that’d be cool right there. That’d be awesome. Um, okay, now you’re, you’re in your third season. Do you see, could you see any chance of an Orville movie in the far future?
Tom Costantino: Yeah, I mean, be honest if, if, if everyone’s willing and Seth is, it’s really, if Seth has it in him and, and, and the fates are right, sure. Why not? I think we’re all open. We’re all here as a labor of love. So I would imagine if, if he wanted to do it and people wanted to pay for it, that we would all stick around and try and, you know, blow people’s socks off for two hours and some odd minutes.
Thomas Townley: All right,
Tom Costantino: now I won’t rule it out.
Thomas Townley: Now let’s take a take a turn into merchandising here. Now the Orville has a comic books from Dark Horse comics and they’ve been very well received. Are there any plans for a novel based on the series?
Tom Costantino: Plans for a novel…. You know, I will, I will get you an answer. I don’t, I have not heard anything about a novel. I know that there might be more things in the vein of comic books, but if anywhere person were to do it, it would be, it would be Mr. David Goodman, Uber talented David Goodman. So next time I see him I will ask him, which will probably be tomorrow because I’ll see him on set.
Thomas Townley: Cool.
Tom Costantino: But that’s a good question. I actually actually don’t know. You know, we’re just starting to see fan films, which is exciting. So I’m just going to have that.
Thomas Townley: [inaudible] cause cause that would, that would really go over well with me. I love, I love the old star Trek novels.
Tom Costantino: really.
Thomas Townley: back in the day and, and the Orville would seem like something that would go great with a novel.
Tom Costantino: Well, I think the comic was that basic idea, but I could imagine a world where, you know, where that, that can happen. But, uh, I, it’s funny, it’s one of those, it’s one of the few loopholes. I haven’t really, one of the things I haven’t really heard much about or been involved or there’s toys and other things come on away, but, uh, that I will check into.
Thomas Townley: Excellent. And finally, what is your favorite scifi show? Other than The Orville?
Tom Costantino: *grabs a Battlestar Galactica Colonel Viper ship and slaps it on the desk*
Thomas Townley: Battlestar Galactica.
Tom Costantino: I rarely have a visual aid, but you happen that I don’t know if you time that, but yeah, yeah, no, I mean, of course I love star Wars and you know, all these old Star Wars and uh, I mean, I, I mean as fan I like some more obscure stuff, but uh, you know, like the black hole and stuff. But, but the, uh, more than anything, these guys also have Doug Drexler down the hall. He gave me this. So cool. You know, that’s the most exciting thing so far of being able to interact with my, I don’t want to make them that much older than me, my childhood hero, but my hero of postproduction and makeup. So yes, I would say BSG.
Thomas Townley: Alright, awesome. Well, thank you very much for your time, Tom. And the…
Tom Costantino: I’m saying this publicly, apologize about the fires last week. Kind of screwed up our last meeting.
Thomas Townley: Oh, that’s it. That’s okay. You know, I hope you and everyone out there stay safe during the wildfire season. And uh, I hope we can talk again once the Orville debuts on Hulu next year.
Tom Costantino: Yes, please. We’d love to, I’ll bring, I’ll bring some friends. We’ll do, we’ll do some more and uh, but before then I will definitely get you to answer about the novels.
Thomas Townley: Oh, cool. Thank you. Thank you very much.
Tom Costantino: Alright, you have a good one.
Thomas Townley: You too.
Tom Costantino: We’ll talk soon. All right, bye.

Welcome to the comics edition of Multiverse Tonight.
A few days ago I started playing Luigi’s Mansion 3 for the Nintendo Switch and it’s a very good game. However it is one that you will need to limber up your fingers for it. It uses almost all the buttons in rapid succession.
By the way, if you’ve been watching HBO’s Watchmen, be sure to look at the Peteypedia on the shows website. It’s full of all sorts of backgoround on what’s happening in that weeks episode.
I hope you tuned into the last episode, I had a great interview with Associate Producer and Editor Tom Constantino from the Orville, if you wanna hear what he said, just go back one episode in the feed.
Let’s get one with the news
So you love the Joker movie and want to recreate Joaquin Phoenix’s dance down that set of stairs. That set of stairs is in the Bronx neighborhood of New York at the corner of Shakespeare and Anderson in Highbridge and you might not want to go there. According to a report, residents of the community aren’t thrilled with the attention and one man decided to send a message by throwing eggs at some of the tourists descending the staircase. The man even videode himself and uploaded it to twitter shouting at the people quote “Y’all not spending no money in my store, but come and take pictures. Get the f*** out of here!” unquote In other words, be kind, spend a dime.
Brandon Routh is saying Goodbye to Legends of Tomorrow. The Former Superman, current The Atom star said goodbye via Instagram saying quote “My final day of filming with my #LegendsFamily. I love you all & appreciate the 5 seasons we’ve spent together.
It hasn’t always been easy, but I think that’s what makes it harder to leave—getting through the growing pains of the first few seasons has bonded us. 👊🏻 And made the last three seasons a blast! I’ve never been at a job this long, so this is new for me. 😢 I think I will miss you all and the fun we’ve had making this silly show on the #Waverider—as much as I’ll miss bringing #RayPalmer to life. Love & blessings on a great finish to the season. 🙏🏼❤️❤️❤️”
Both Routh and his wife Courney Ford who plays Nora Darhk are leaving the series. Series Executive Producers Phill Klemmer, Grainne Godfree and Keto Shimizu told Deadline quote “Brandon and Courtney have been invaluable members of the Legends family,” “They have always brought a level of passion and collaboration to their characters and to the show — both on and off the screen – that we deeply admire and for which we are eternally grateful.”
Speaking of endings. Arrow co-creator took to Twitter to explain the meaning behind the series finale’s title “Fadeout” in the post he displayed a drawing of a bow with callouts to what all the parts of the weapon . He circled the bottom of the bow which is called the Fadeout. Wonder if Starling city will be destroyed one time…
Warner Bros tangentially Batman related Joker has passed Deadpool 2 to become the highest rated R rated movie. The film has totaled over 790 million dollars.. Deadpool 2 grossed in 785 million last year and the first deadpool garnered 782 million. Ryan Renolds congratulated Joker with a tweet saying quote “R-rated box office congratulatory posts aren’t like the ones you’re used to.” unquote . That was because it came with a redone pic of the movie poster with the words you mother f*cker , heart Deadpool , Neo, Pennywise, Jesus, Hugh Jackman, the Wolfpack, Mr. Grey, Ted
Batwoman’s ratings have slowly slipped down since the premiere, but the CW has confidence in the show giving it and Nancy Drew full season pickups. CW went on to emphasize that both shows Plus 3 and Plus 7 numbers are doing good. With double digit gains. Not only have they given batwoman a full season they have extended the season order from 13 to 22.
Lucifer is in the midst of filming its final season and Kelly Calrkson on her talk show got to visit the set with her mother and sister, while there Tom Ellis announced that the sixteen episode season will be split in two saying quote “Season 5 of Lucifer is going to be split into two halves. Netflix are gonna drop eight episodes and then there’s gonna be a little break, and then they’re gonna drop another eight episodes.” unquote There will also be a special black and white 1940’s themed episode with a musical flair. The release date has not been announced.
Wonder Woman 1984 director has all but confirmed that Pedro Pascal will play Maxwell Lord. She tweeted a pic of the character from the comics with “Well hello…Max” #WW1984 she tagged Pedro Pascal in the post, which is what is leading the speculation that Pedro will be Max. The character was created back in 1987 and debuted in Justice League number one. He was first just a backer of the league but later turned into a more sinister character. Wonder Woman 1984 opens in theaters on June fifth, 2020. Seems like they better get crackin on that movie…
Superman is returning to tv. Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch will play the titular characters in Superman & Lois. Former Flash showrunner todd Helbing will be writing and executive producing the new series. And will follow Lois and Clark as they deal with all the problems of being working parents in today’s society. Of course, you know that Greg Brelanti will be executive producing the show alongside Helbing, Berlanti Productions Sarah Schechter and DC’s Geoff Johns.
The CW is also working on a female focused arrow spinoff with Katherine McNamara, Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy. So when will the CW just become the DCW already.
One of the best jokes in Avengers Endgame was Captain America looking at his past self lying face down on the ground and remarking “This is America’s Ass. In an interview with Syfy Wire Endgame writer Christopher Marcus explained that originally it was only Tony Stark and Ant-man on the joke. But then it grew. He told them quote “It sort of grew on its own,” “The first thing that was there was Tony looking at Cap’s terrible Avengers outfit and going, ‘that suit does nothing for your ass.’ That stood on its own for a while, and then Ant-Man was added to the scene, and he said, ‘I think that’s America’s ass.’ And that was the joke for a while.” unquote His writing partner Stephen McFeely decided to add Cap in on the joke during the reshoots he told Syfy Wire quote “We redid the Cap on Cap fight, the ending of it, and that helped us tremendously,” “And then we needed to get out of that scene a little differently, and there [2012 Cap] was, slumped on the ground with his butt in the air.” unquote And movie magic was born.
By the way, Christopher Markus also talked with CinemaBlend and told the site that he would like to see MODOK as the next big bad. Quote “I always go back to the guy I always want to see on screen, which is MODOK,” “Also, part of me… it’s hard to say if he was officially destroyed, I wouldn’t mind seeing a third incarnation of Zola. Now in a robotic body. We got him from human to face on screen, I’d like him to get mobile now. I can’t say that’s going to happen, but it’d be fun.”
MODOK aka Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing was originally a guy named George Tarleton who was mutated after an accident that made his head huge and required a special hoverchair to move around. He first appeared in Tales of Suspense #93 back in 1967.

A report from variety might spell a problem for Marvel’s Hawkeye series. Hailee Steinfeld is supposed to be up for the lead role in the series, but she already has a role on Apple Plus’ Dickenson. When asked about it at the premiere for the show, she played coy about it saying quote “That, I don’t know about!” she said, seemingly caught off guard. “I don’t know,”“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Sources have told Variety that her deal with Apple might preclude her taking a role on a competing streaming service, although her team could always negotiate a fix for that.
If more detail comes out, I’ll let you know.
