Title: The Trek explosion of 2019

Tonight! Kurtzman hints at new Trek,  A cook becomes a stormtrooper and Into the Spiderverse might lead to new patents….on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Let’s change things up and start with Star Trek.

Have you been watching all the Short Treks? What have you thought about them? Me, I’ve thought that most of them felt like half thought through, just story ideas with huge plot holes, but they saved the best for last. The escape artist which starred Rainn Wilson as Harry Mudd was more of a fully contained episode with a beginning, middle and an end and brought us the trickster Mudd that was kinda missing from Season one of Discovery. Well whether you did or didn’t like them, apparently, we’re gonna get a lot more short treks.

In an exclusive to the Hollywood Reporter, Trek franchise captain Alex Kurtzman let them in on what is in the pipeline for the franchise.

Not only will there be another season of Discovery, The Picard series and the animated Star Trek Lower Decks series, but two more episodes of Star Trek Short Treks, which will be animated instead of live action and will debut in the spring following season two of Discovery. Quoting Kurtzman “Our goal is to not only expand the definition of Star Trek and what has qualified as traditional Star Trek, but also to tell stories that are both self-contained in a very short period of time that also connect to the larger picture of what we’re doing, not only in Discovery but in the world building of Trek in general,” “And you get to tell these very intimate, emotional stories that are side stories to characters. So you get the benefit of the experience in and of itself but then when you watch Discovery you’ll see that these were all setting up things in the world of season two.” Unquote

Other projects still in the works include a Section 31 spinoff with Michelle Yeoh, a Starfleet Academy series from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage and more.

When talking about the Lower Decks animated series, he said that while it is a comedy, he implied that  it won’t be a parody of Star Trek but will quote “It’s embracing and loving of all the tropes of Star Trek but it’s never laughing at it.” unquote

Kurtzman also revealed that quote “There’s other animated things that we’re building that are an entirely different perspective and an entirely different tone [from Lower Decks],” Kurtzman said of the kids-focused series — which could land elsewhere beyond CBS All Access. “What’s exciting about it is not only looking at each animated series as what’s the different tone, but what’s the different technology we can apply to these things so that visually they’re entirely different?” unquote. Anyone else get Star Trek Babies popping up in their heads? About why the aim at a younger audience, Kurtzman noted that quote “I go back to my childhood and Luke Skywalker, the [Star Wars] farm boy who looks out at the twin suns of Tatooine and imagines his future. Trek never gave me that. Trek was always fully formed adults, already in Starfleet and people who have decided who they are. And it never was aspirational that way,” “It’s important to me to find a way to go back and reach younger kids in a way that Trek should and never really has.” Hmmm. Okay. I was watching star trek when I was a child, the next generation debuted when I was eleven, I believe? So I don’t think his comments land well with me. Besides, what attracts kids to Star Wars is not Luke Skywalker, it’s laser swords and dogfights in space and merchandising. If Star Trek had those things, I’d been bought by Disney too.

They finished the interview with questions about bringing in James Kirk to the show, since they’re bringing in Spock this season, Kurtzman responded with quote “There’s a 10-year gap between where we are in Discovery and Kirk’s arrival on the Enterprise. There would [have to] be a major time jump if we were going to do something like that. What Kirk was doing at this particular time is another question but we don’t have any immediate plans [for the character],” “I have not spoken to Shatner about it.” Ooookay. Why would he have to talk to Shatner about it? Shatner is not the end all be all of Kirk? Besides, Shatner is the ACTOR he played Kirk, he’s not the shield barrier of Kirk’s life story.

So, what’s the takeaway here? Hope? Fear?. As I read this interview, I felt there were times that Kurtzman gets it and then he goes completely off the wall. I’m also concerned about putting out product for the sake of having product. They should work on putting out GOOD product.

And on the subject of the Picard series, Alex Kurtzman has told The Hollywood Reporter that since we’ve last seen Picard, quote “Picard’s life was radically altered by the dissolution of the Romulan Empire” he told the Hollywood Reporter. If you will recall, the Romulan star empire was destroyed by the destruction of Romulus in events heard of but not seen in the 2009 Star Trek movie. So it might be a good idea to read the Countdown prequel that Kurtzman co-wrote that was the prequel to the movie.

Anyway,

As we approach season two of Discovery, the actors have been busy with the press offensive, Anthony Rapp in a new promo “You know we really, we really became a family in Season One,”. “But we were doing all of our work in a kind of, not a void, exactly, but in our little bubble, before the rest of the world got to really know what we were doing. So, we had already forged that bond, and now that we got to share it, it’s, in a way, it’s kind of made it even stronger. Everything just feels sort of more settled and grounded and…confident, I guess.” Sonequa Martin-Green in a separate promo also spoke of the camaraderie with the cast and crew of Discovery. IN a separate interview with IGN she talked about the Red Angel revelation, quote “The Red Angel appears to Michael Burnham at a very, very critical moment,”. “You can see from the trailer that we just released that it looks like a life or death moment. And I see this angel and I  say that it gives me comfort and lets me know that everything is going to be okay. And then what I find out later is that Spock has also seen this same Red Angel, but when he was a child. And so it’s a huge mystery. And it’s one of the big themes of Season Two, finding out what this angel is, where this angel came from, what it wants, what it needs, what it’s doing. All those questions.” unquote

Next we go from the CBS side of Trek to the Paramount side of Trek, with some troubling news about the fourth installment of the JJVerse. A new report from Deadline says that director SJ Clarkson, who supposedly was helming the movie has left to direct and executive produces the pilot for the Game of Thrones prequel at HBO. According to the site, the new Trek film has been shelved. This might be a good idea, while the remerging of Viacom is in the potential offing, they should just wait, build a good solid project and maybe they’ll have both the CBS and Paramount sides back under one roof again.

You now have a new way to read Star Trek comics. The digital comics subscription service Inky Pen has launched on the Nintendo Switch. The service lets you read IDWs library of comics featuring dozens of back issues from the 11 years that IDW has held the publishing rights for the franchise. Also available on the service are comics from Valiant, Dark Horse, Titan, Papercutz, Humanoids, Dynamite and Archie Comics as well as clasic comic strips including Calvin and Hobbes, Peanuts and Garfield. Subscriptions cost 7.99 and it can be downloaded from the Nintendo eshop.

And while we’re speaking of comics….The Enterprise just became a Transformer….yeah. In Star Trek vs Transformers issue 3. Okay, it’s not the actual Enterprise, Kirk was hooked into Fortress Maximus and took the form of the Enterprise. The new Fortress Maximus took the name Fortress Tiberius…to be continued. The series from IDW uses the Star Trek animated series style for the look of the Enterprise crew. I haven’t read it, but this news was hard to miss.

The makers of the Star Trek Deep Space Nine documentary What We Left Behind: Looking back at Star Trek Deep Space Nine have released a look at the HD upgrade of some footage from the show. Ira Steven Behr released an update saying that while the documentary is behind schedule due to the footage upgrade, he did show some footage from the DS9 episode Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang.  You can see the footage in the update on Youtube, we will have a link in the show notes.

Star Trek Online is going back to the mirror universe with the Mirror of Discovery update that’s part of the ninth anniversary of STO. The update finds the player face to face with the heard of but not seen Captain Killy, the mirror universe version of Sylvia tilly. She’ll be voiced by Mary Wiseman. The game will also add two new Discovery themed episodes, anniversary challenges and an update to the game’s Endeavors System. Play the game when it updates on January 23rd and earn a new T6 Vulcan Scout Ship.

Star Wars News

According to The Motley Fool, Disney is on track to have one of it’s best years yet. Disney has seven of the top ten most anticipated movies of the year according to Fandango including Avengers Endgame, Captain Marvel and Star Wars Episode Nine which hold the top three spots. On top of that Disney’s streaming service, Disney Plus launches this year, the Disney Fox deal should be final at the end of this month according to a report from NBC News. Has well as the launch of Disney theme parks Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge theme expansion. By the way, if you plan on going to the new expansion, bring your checkbooks. Prices at the theme parks are going way up with the cheapest entry now above $100 dollars.

The spinoff series to Rogue One will begin filming this October according to Production Weekly. The series will probably be released in 2020. The series is described as quote “The rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire.” Also going into production in October is The Mandalorian. 2020 is gonna be chock full of Star Trek and Star Wars tv.

Speaking of the Mandalorian, Jon Favreau has confirmed that everyone’s favorite giant coffee grinder slash bounty hunter IG-88 will be making an appearance in the series.  Favreau recently showed a picture of the tall droid in front of a green screen on his Twitter feed with the message Merry Christmas. Making Star Wars has confirmed this saying that he has been seen on set. It’s not known how IG-88 factors into the plot, but we’ll see next year.

Moving from the tv to the movie side of the Force. According to the UK’s The Sun, Celebrity chef  Jamie Oliver will cameo as a stormtrooper in Episode IX, he was recently seen at Pinewood Studios training with other stormtroopers, apparently taking it very seriously. Perhaps he’ll be serving healthy meals to the Troopers in the cafeteria?

Carrie Fisher’s brother Todd Fisher told ABC News that there is lots of footage to use. Quote “There’s a lot of minutes of footage. I don’t mean just outtakes,” “This is unused, new content that could be woven into the storyline. That’s what’s going to give everybody such a great kick. It’s going to look like it was meant to be. Like it was shot yesterday.”  “We’re not allowed to talk about the details of anything,” “But we’re thrilled at what’s been done.” Unquote
He also revealed that not only will Carrie’s unused footage be used, but some other project will surface as well. Quote
“We have a lot of her artifacts, and a lot of things of hers that she’s written that will someday be shared. There’s a lot more to come from Carrie,” Fisher admitted. Unquote

DC News

Let’s start DC News with a reminder of what is upcoming from DC Movies.. April 5th sees the release of the Big Red Cheeses movie Shazam! Joaquin Phoenix’s turn as The Joker comes out October 4th. In 2020, we will see the Birds of Prey movie and  Wonder Woman 1984.

Speaking of Bird of Prey, according to HN Entertainment, Principal photography will wrap on the movie this April, The Cathy Yan directed film will see Harley Quinn team up with Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain and Renee Montoya in what’s being called an R-rated girl gang movie. It opens in theaters in February of 2020. Happy Birthday to me.

Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is also being featured prominently in a special trailer for The Lego Movie 2. IN the trailer, Emmet decides to rescue his friends and he meets resistance from several characters including Harley who remarks that the undertaking of such a task would be a suicide mission. *cue rimshot*

DC’s Aquaman is now DC Films most successful movie at the International box office The movie has earned over 1 billion overseas making it the most successful movie dc movie worldwide beating Batman Vs. Superman which brought in 873.6 worldwide. Here in the States, Aquaman has made over 287 million and was number one for three weeks. It was only finally knocked off this past week by The Upside. Pretty good for a movie that’s full of sea-men.

Diamond Comic Distributors have released their list of the biggest comics of 2018. The number one comic of the year belongs to DC. Action Comics #1000 took the top spot beating Amazing Spiderman #800.

Marvel News

We start off Marvel News with Adrianne Palicki, right now she’s second in command on the Orville, but she’s game to return to her former role as Mockingbird on Marvel’s Agents of Shield. In an interview with TV Line, she talked about her interest and the fact that Nick Blood got to return without her. Quote “Listen, if they ask me to come back, I would absolutely come back,” “I was like, “Nick [Blood] came back [for a Season 5 episode] — what the hell, guys?” As to her current role on The Orville, she did note that both roles required her to keep a lot of secrets. Agents of Shield will return for season six in 2019.

By the way, in the interview, she talked about what the Agents of Shield spinoff, Marvel’s Most Wanted would have been. Quote “Oh, I saw the pilot. It was actually really, really good. It was a little darker, grittier…, “We were mercenaries, yeah. It’s kind of an extension of what we were dealing with before, where we, like, ended up trying to get married again and all hell breaks loose because people are after us. Ultimately it’s us just kind of fighting for our lives. Hmmm. Could have been interesting.

Spider-man Into the Spider-verse is doing great at the box office. The animation style is one of the most unique since Toy Story’s use of Computer Animation. Sony wants to make sure that this style of animation stays with them as they have filed for patent protection for the animation process and technologies associated with the film. Sony’s application, according to Deadline.com claims that the innovation of the film goes beyond stylistic originality or envelope-pushing success and qualify as a distinctly new invention. The filing cites a half-dozen specific components of the process. So what do you think, do you think that this is a new invention?

And while we’re speaking of inventive, the PG13 version of Deadpool 2, Once Upon a Deadpool is now out on Bluray and Digital. The movie which brought in 6 million dollars to the regular R rated Deadpool 2’s 318 million, was a holiday hit with its wraparound story featuring Fred Savage. So, it’s time to open your wallets and buy this again!

And after you watch Once upon a Deadpool, you have just days until Marvel’s The Punisher’s second season is released on Netflix, According to showrunner Steve Lightfoot says the second season will be about Frank really adopting the persona of the Punisher.

The villain for season two will be a Christian Fundamentalist called Pilgrim.

According to the Observer, The budget for X-Men Dark Phoenix has skyrocketed to 200 million, that just 20 million more than the cost of the first Avengers movie. This amount may be due to extensive reshoots, that also caused the film to be pushed back from release by four months. Reactions to the film have been muted with most people looking forward to the X-Men universe being integrated into Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Geek News

The Orville improved on the audience from it’s Gotham lead-in bringing in a.7 this past Thursday.  3.06 million viewers tuned in. Which matches the average for episodes from last season. Hopefully, this and the fact that they got a tax break for production of the third season will see that third season approved.

Fox has also confirmed that actress Halston Sage has left The Orville as a series regular, Halston’s character Alara left in the third episode that aired last week, her character will be replaced by a new Xelyan security chief in an upcoming episode.

A Redditor called bork1138 showcased a picture of his parents who have been playing MarioKart 64 together every day since 2001. Bork1138 said that He said they both know the game so well now that they had to make the rule that neither of them would use any shortcuts or cheats to win. Just an old-fashioned race showdown. https://geektyrant.com/news/elderly-couple-plays-mario-kart-64-every-day-for-18-years

Very cute.

Rumors are swirling about that Nintendo might be releasing an SNES emulator on their online service at some point in the future. Some data miners breaking the software on the Switch have claimed seeing emulator programs for SNES titles. Now so far there is no visual proof of anything but I wouldn’t put it past Nintendo to release SNES emulation for the Switch since releasing an NES emulator on the Switch last year. Stay tuned, when we find out anything definite, we will let you know.

From the “Thanks, but no one asked for one” file comes news that a new reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could begin production this year. Paramount has hired whose short career includes the screenplay for the upcoming Space Jam 2. The movie is being produced by (sigh) Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller through their Platinum Dunes production company. I don’t hold out much hope here.

One of last year’s biggest disappointments was the passing of Stan Lee. Well fans will finally have time to say goodbye in a tribute on January 30th at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood. The event which is being put on by Legion M and Agents of Mayhem, plus Lee’s Pow! Entertainment and is called EXCELSIOR! A STAN LEE CELEBRATION, it will act as a benefit to The Hero Initiative, the non-profit that helps aged comic creators in need and will be hosted by a friend of Stan and Uber fan, Kevin Smith. There will be a public display in the courtyard, and a private tribute inside the theatre.

The outdoor portion of the event will feature art, music, props, and costumes from Lee’s body of work, while the indoor portion will feature Smith hosting conversations with friends of Stans including  Mark Hamill, Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld, Batman exec producer Michael Uslan, Daredevil actor Vincent D’Onofrio, hip-hop artist RZA, and X-Men and Transformers producer Tom DeSanto. There will also be music and poetry that was special to Lee, as well as the attendance of his daughter, J.C. Lee. Hero Initiative’s Jim McLauchlin, who knew Lee for decades, said the evening will be in Lee’s spirit: Quote “Stan believed in the ‘golden rule,’ and always went out of his way to make time for others and make their day just a little bit better. I think this tribute is absolutely in that spirit, and a great chance for fans to get together, share their love for Stan, and find strength in that.” It’s great to know that Stan will be remembered by those who knew him and loved him best.

We end tonight saluting the life of William Morgan Sheppard. You might not know his name, but if you have watched Star Trek or Doctor Who, you would know the face. Born in 1932, Mister Sheppard graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1958 and then worked as a stage actor for the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1962, he started acting in films, mostly made for tv films, some of his most notable geek roles include Blank Reg in the Max Headroom movie pilot and show, Vincent Talbot in Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, Captain Archibald Witwicky in the first Transformers movie and the Klingon Prison Warden in Star Trek VI, he also appeared in an uncredited role in the 2009 Star Trek movie as a Vulcan Science Minister.

He started acting on television in 1979 and had many roles including as Data’s grandfather Ira Graves in the Star Trek The Next Generation episode The Schizoid Man, appearances on MacGyver, Quantum Leap, SeaQuest DSV, Babylon 5, Gargoyles, Star Trek Voyager, Charmed, The season six premiere of Doctor Who, with his son who played the younger version of his character,  his final tv role was in an episode of The Librarians. His son Mark Sheppard made a statement on Instagram about his father’s passing quote “We went to spend some time with my father today,” he wrote. “Though he couldn’t speak, we held hands, he laughed and was so happy to see us. We left and came home. A good day. He was rushed to the hospital and passed at 6:30 pm, my mother by his side. I am so grateful that he didn’t have to suffer any longer. Thank you for all your kind thoughts, love and prayers.” unquote

William Morgan Sheppard passed away surrounded by his family on January 6th, he was 86 years old.

Happy New Year

So we find ourselves in another year, the beginning of a full year for the podcast. We are going to have some new things this year. A table at a con. Maybe a new piece of equipment. More interviews. Maybe a new logo? Who knows for sure. Let’s have a good year.

6 Months In

So…here I am, six months in and it’s Christmas. Christmas doesn’t mean much to me. I even have to work my night job Christmas night.

However, that doesn’t mean there’s not a lot to look forward to in 2019.

I hope to get at least 50 downloads per episode.

I will have my first convention booth at the Smallville Con in Hutchinson in June.

There are plenty of good movies coming out including Men In Black International

X-Men Dark Phoenix

and Avengers Endgame

There’s always new equipment I wanna buy, like a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 or a different mike.

Maybe I’ll start another podcast as well, I would just need a subject that I know well that there are not alot of other podcasts covering it.

But that’s the future. I’m gonna put together a special episode next week to be released New Year’s Day.

See you in 2019!

Thomas Townley

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Review

First off, I have to say that this show is nothing like the Sabrina: The Teenage Witch from 90’s ABC television. Not even remotely so get that out of our head. The cat doesn’t talk, the aunts aren’t happy, no celebrities are gonna show up on the show and Sabrina wasn’t just left at her aunts to learn witchcraft, her parents were killed.

That said, I freakin’ love this show.

The show starts easy enough, you learn that Sabrina is about to enter an important moment in her life, her Dark Baptism. This is kinda like a Bat Mitzvah for a witch, when she pledges herself to the Path of Night and the Dark Lord aka Satan. She would then cut all ties with the mortal world and enter the Academy of Unseen Arts.

Trouble is our girl Sabrina (played well by Kiernan Shipka, who played Don Draper’s daughter on Mad Men)is torn. She has been looking forward to this moment all her life, but she doesn’t want to leave her mortal life behind. What’s a girl to do? Especially when unseen forces might be trying to force her hand?

I’m about halfway through episode four as I write this review and I’m impressed with the richness of Sabrina’s world. You don’t feel like anything was left to whim. From rituals to character traits to wardrobe, pretty much everything works well to build this dark local of Greendale, which is in the same unknown state as the CW’s Riverdale. (Not only do we get mentions of Riverdale, we will get a cameo by someone from Riverdale in the first season and the possibilities of more in the future.

There are plenty of mysteries too. What’s in the mines that scared Sabrina’s boyfriend Harvey (played by Ross Lynch)? Why did Sabrina’s father and mother do what they did to Sabrina? And what roles did her aunts (played by Lucy Davis and Miranda Otto) play in all of this? What’s taken control of Ms. Wardwell (played by former The Master  actress Michelle Gomez)?

This series is just a lovely thing to watch and it has a good pedigree coming from Greg Berlanti (he of many many series too numerous to mention) and developed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (he’s chief creative officer of Archie Comics, as well as a writer of the comic book version of this show.)

I have very few complaints about the show. Mainly about how clueless the normal humans in Greendale seem to be, but that’s minor.

I look forward to watching the rest of this season.

A Convention Story: There and Back Again.

So Wizard World Tulsa has come and gone. This was a much much smaller convention than in years past.

No competitive gaming, No comic book writers , not nearly as many vendors as previous years. But it was still enjoyable.

The best part of the convention were the panels. The State of Trek panel was particularly good and I talked with them for a few monuments at the end.

I got a couple of interviews, one with author Sabrina A. Fish and one with a vendor selling some gay pirate novellas (Don’t ask), I’ll have those posted in the near future

One of the biggest surprises of the con was that the MC at the entertainment stage was Kato Kaelin. (For those of you born later than 1990, please turn to the old person on your left and ask who that is…or just ask Google.

I would give a shoutout to Fanboys 918 for that excellent Star Trek panel and to the Best Western Plus Downtown Tulsa, which gave us a free upgrade to a suite for the weekend.

I look forward to next years convention. We don’t know what the date will be yet. So fingers crossed.

Episode Seven

Cold Open:Tonight! Jai Nitz sees dividends from Suicide Squad, Tag and Bink on the cutting room floor and by judicial order there can be only one con named Comic on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Marvel News:

A new rumor has surfaced from the site Geeks WorldWide that Deadpool 2 director David Leitch will be returning to direct Deadpool 3. The Site notes that Leitch has the Fast and Furious spinoff Hobbs and Shaw next with filming from September to January. That could mean that Deadpool 3 wouldn’t begin production till sometime next August.  Which would also be well after the Disney/Fox deal will be done.

Speaking of Geeks Worldwide, They have a report from Omega Underground  that Marvel Studios is looking to begin filming a Phase Four movie next June in the United Kingdom. The big three candidates would be Black Widow, Doctor Strange 2 or The Eternals.  Those three are movies that are known, but have yet to have any dates attached to them. The vast knowledge of what will be in the Phase Four of the MCU is unknown, other than Spiderman: Far From Home which is set to come out next fourth of july weekend.

Well let’s get to the news concerning the firing of James Gunn on Guardians 3. As you might have heard, Disney and Marvel will not be rehiring Gunn, and will instead be looking for a new director. One name has already come forward to say Take me off your list.

Steven DeKnight, who served as Executive Producer for the first season of Daredevil in addition to directing the lackluster Pacific Rim Uprising was asked on twitter if he would be willing to step into the role if offered. He answered, quote “I would politely decline,. “No way in hell I could come close to what @JamesGunn has accomplished.”

So anyone else want the job?

Jessica Jones series creator and Executive Producer Melissa Rosenberg will be leaving after the series upcoming third season for a new deal with Warner Brothers Television, where she has signed a contract worth tens of millions according to the Hollywood reporter. Apparently Netflix DID try to retain her services, but the contract from Warners was just too great. In a statement Melissa said quote “All of my attention remains with the extraordinary cast, writers and production team of Marvel’s Jessica Jones, until the completion of season three,” “It continues to be a career highlight working with my partners at Marvel Television and Netflix. We’re extraordinarily grateful to the viewers who have supported us every step of the way on Jessica’s journey, which is so beautifully realized by Krysten Ritter and the amazing cast including Rachael Taylor, Eka Darville and Carrie-Anne Moss. We have so many talented storytellers in every area of this show, who I’m honored to call friends and collaborators. As I look ahead after this season, I’m thrilled that I will be able to explore new projects with the talented team at Warner Bros. Television and push myself in new challenging creative directions.” Unquote

The cast of Deadpool 2 was asked by Buzzfeed quote  “If you could have anyone from any franchise join the X-Force, who would it be?” unquote

Suggestions put forward by the cast included Howard the Duck, the Blob, Cilene Dion and Captain Planet. Ryan Renolds had the big winner, suggesting Hugh Jackman but not as Wolverine. Just plain old Hugh Jackman, maybe singing as his Les Miz character.  Well here’s to hoping Ryan. Here’s to hoping.

Doctor Strange, Master of the Mystical Arts and Acerbic Wit will be back. Yeah, he dissolved into nothingness in Infinity War, but that’s immaterial. Dissolved. Immaterial. Get it. A rumor reported by the Mirror indicates that filming will begin in Spring 2019, giving it a probable fall release date in 2020. Allegedly, he will get a pay raise of 6 million more than the first movie netting the Master of the sling ring 9.5 million. I would love it if it had some interaction with Spider-man.

DC Comics

DC’s Suicide Squad movie hit theaters two years ago, man that’s seems like ages ago. Apparently it is paying some dividends, On Twitter, comic book writer Jai Nitz, whose version of el Diablo was featured in the film, posted “Did you like El Diablo in @DavidAyerMovies Suicide Squad? Good. Because it just bought me a house. #CasaDelDiablo” He posted that with a picture of him and his new house.

Speaking of Suicide Squad, news around the sequel has been quiet. Todd Stashwich will pen the script with David Bar Katz and Gavin O’Conner will direct. However it looks like it will be getting delayed a report from Geek WorldWide indicates that Smith will film Bad Boys 3 and the sequel to the Netflix film Bright next. This will push back filming on Suicide Squad two for quite some time.  Warner Bros seems to be shifting it’s current priorities to The Joker, Birds of Prey, The Flash and The Batman movies. Shazam! Is now in post production and will come out this April. SHAZAM! Damn, still not working.

In an interview with Bustle dot com, Legends of Tomorrow stars Tala Ashe, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, and Caity Lotz, Arrow’s Juliana Harkavy, and The Flash’s Candice Patton said that they’d be up for an all female crossover. Tala Ashe said quote “On our own show, all of us separately have said to the writers, ‘Let’s have a girls’ episode,'” “Not just for the sake of having a girls’ night, but realizing that it’s kind of rare, actually, to be in a scene where it’s just women. What is that conversation between five [superhero] women when it’s not about a man? That would be exciting to me, so yeah, let’s freaking crossover it up!” And it’s not like they want to just get rid of the men for an episode, they just think it would be fun for the women to have a team up by themselves. Now while there’s no indication of am all women crossover, there will be more women kicking but in the Arrowverse with the addition of Ruby Rose staring in Batwoman and joining this years crossover.

The press release had the following logline for the series. Quote Set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own. Unquote Kinda vague. What we do know is that it won’t follow the same story or characters from the original story.

So are you ready for Watchmen sans The Watchmen?

And speaking of shows coming to series Pennyworth has been ordered to series by Epix. Batman’s father, Thomas Wayne, will also have a major role in the show, as he is set to be a major ally for Alfred.

All this needs is James Bond, Austin Powers and The Avengers team-up.

The Wilmington Star News reports that DC Comics Swamp Thing series will begin filming in the North Carolina town in September. The series, which is set for a thirteen episode first season will be filmed at EUE/Screen Gems Studios and will run on the DC Universe digital streaming service.

Toymaker hasbro and DC Comics have settled a trade dispute over the name Bumblebee. The transformers maker sought to block sales of a Mattel doll based on the superhero who has the ability to shrink arguing that it caused confusion in the marketplace with their own Transformer, the yellow Autobot called, Bumblebee. *sigh*

Terms of the settlement were not disclosed and no one on either side had a comment to Variety dot com.

A Bumblebee spin off movie is coming to theaters on December 21st.

Just to set the record straight, the DC Comics character of Bumblebee predates the Transformer, she debuted in the Teen Titans in 1977. The Transformer was introduced in 1983 and they obtained the trademark on the Bumblebee name in 2015. It’s amazing that no one trademarked that name before that.

So now they can all Buzz off.

Writer Scott Snyder has officially addressed whether or not the 2013 Batman Zero year storyline is still DC Comics cannon. The recent 2011 reboot of DC, The New 52, erased some parts of DC Universe continuity but kept some as well.

But with Doomsday Clock and Justice League causing more ripples in the universe Scott was asked on twitter if Zero Year still was. His reply quote It’s all supposed to be right now. Bc of what’s happening in Doomsday Clock, there can be fluidity so a lot of pre and post new 52 material co exist. Also, I always feel Bruce wore the great classic costume most of his early career. ZY is specific to ZY.

So the answer for right now is Yes. But it’s still subject to change.

In this age where comic book properties are being made into movies and tv, it’s almost shocking to learn when something didn’t come into being.

Moon and Warcraft director Duncan Jones has revealed on twitter that he once pitched a Prez movie to Warner Brothers and the studio didn’t go for it.

First a little backstory, Prez is a DC character from a short lived 1973 comic series by Joe Simon and Jerry Grandenetti. It focused around Prez Rickard who becomes america’s first teenage president and gets into all sorts of weird things like vampires, werewolves and George Washington’s descendant. It was cancelled after four issues. Dropped in the quarter box of history. Enter Duncan Jones. He has said that his take on Prez would have been inspired by a story Neil Gaiman wrote in 1993 for his seminal fantasy horror series, Sandman.

Quote I’ve mentioned this once before, but there was a fantastic DC comic book called Prez once upon a time that [Neil Gaiman] did a spin on, about a young kid genius who solves the problems of the world,”Unquote  Jones further elaborated Quote “I wanted to make that movie but DC guy at WB not interested.” “Didn’t fit in with their ‘fights in tights’ ethos, I guess.” Unquote Now while this version of the character might not see the light of day anytime soon, the character was revived by DC in 2015 for a six issue miniseries about a teenage girl named Beth ross who also becomes President and chooses Prez as her vice president. It was very well received.

DC Universes Doom Patrol series has found it’s Cliff Steele aka Robotman. Brenden Fraser, who is known for 1999’s The Mummy and it’s sequels, Dudley Do-Right and George of the Jungle, will voice Robotman, as well as appear as Cliff Steele in flashbacks. Here’s the official character description: “A former race car driver, Cliff Steele was in a horrific accident that left his body uninhabitable. Cliff’s brain was saved by the mysterious Dr. Caulder and he lives on in a powerful robotic body.” Fraser joins “Orange Is the New Black” star Diane Guerrero, who will play Crazy Jane, and “The First Purge” star Joivan Wade, who will play Cyborg.

Legendary composer Hans Zimmer will return to the DC Universe according to Film Music Reporter, Zimmer has agreed to score Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman 1984/ Zimmer last composed superhero music for Batman HansV Superman in 2016. He is replacing Rupert Gregson-Williams who did the score for the first wonder woman movie.

Star Wars

Deadline reports that Lord of The rings and Lost star Dominic Monaghan has been cast in Star Wars Nine, the search for more money. With the news ,Dominic has said quote “The galaxy far far away has had almost as much influence as the one I live in, so I am delighted to be involved,” He reoprtedly joins Keri russell, Naomi Ackie and richard E Grant as new to the franchise actors.

The new Star Wars animated series Star Wars Resistance will be bringing some big talent with it. Including Oscar Isaac voicing Poe Dameron and Gwendoline Christie  as Phasma. The first trailer has revealed that Leia Organa will be featured in the series voiced by Rachel Butera. Here’s the description of the series. Quote “Resistance fighter Poe Dameron tasks young pilot Kazuda (Kaz) Xiono with spying on the First Order. At the time, little was known about the secretive organization and its strength. In order to fulfill his mission, Kaz travels to the space station Colossus, which is being used by many ships as a port to refuel and do repairs. However, there are also dangerous races taking place there. After Kaz bragged with his piloting skills at his arrival there, he is soon drawn into one of the races…” unquote The series takes place in the time between Return to the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

The novelization for Solo A Star Wars Story includes a deleted scene with a couple of characters from the old Extended Universe, Tag and Bink. Tag and Bink are from a Dark Horse Star Wars comedy comic called Tag and Bink are Dead. The two characters find their way in and out of the main star wars story, accidently influencing the events of the Star Wars universe with comic results.

According to Jonathan Kasdan quote “One of the things we went back and forth on a lot is that both Larry [Kasdan, co-writer] and I felt that it was important to see Han in the Imperial Academy, in the Navy, because we wanted to see him become this pilot,” Kasdan shared with ComicBook.com. “And from the first draft through the last draft, there was a chunk of the movie — Very short. Like, I’d say 80 seconds long — That showed him in the Imperial Academy doing some sort of flight things, sort of disobeying a direct order, and getting kicked out.” Kasdan and his first AD played Tag and Bink in the scene, but Ron Howard cut the scene, even though Ron’s wife Cheryl was in the scene too. Quote “We were so sure, too, that Ron actually put his wife, Cheryl, who has to be in all his movies because it’s his only superstition, into the scene because he’s like, ‘Well, this is the one thing that isn’t coming out,'” “And then it did come out, and Ron had to get Cheryl over to Disney and CGI her into another shot just so we weren’t cursed. So, when I think you’ll see Tag and Bink is on the Blu-ray, because no way we’re putting that on Blu-ray without the Imperial Academy sequence. It’s a great sequence, too.” The novelization hits shelves on September 4th, while the Bluray hits shelves on September 25th.

Neil Lamont, one of the production designers at Lucasfilm has told Cinemablend that he and his team had begun work on a Tatooine set for an unknown spinoff Neil told them quote

We were just starting our work on another Star Wars spin-off and yeah. We were actually just making our mark on Tatooine — which would have been interesting and some other new galaxies,” Lamont shared with CinemaBlend. “So hopefully, if that comes back, we’ll get the chance to be able to do that further.”

He didn’t elaborate on why they stopped, but speculation has begun on what the set might have been for. Could it have been the Obi-Wan movie? Or Boba Fett? The conclusion that CinemaBlend came too was a possible idea for a Mos Eisley Spaceport movie something that would revolve around the hometown of Luke Skywalker.

This might have been interesting, but with Solo being a box office disappointment, Lucasfilm seems to be narrowing their strategy at the moment. I guess once bitten, twice shy.

Well if you had the theory that actor Richard E. Grant would be playing Grand Admiral Thrawn, I hope you didn’t put any money on that. The actor told Radio Times when the question was brought up quote“I’m not playing the Star Wars character you just mentioned,” “I’m not allowed to tell you anything. Otherwise I would be fired.” unquote

I guess we’ll have to keep dreaming

Star Trek news

Garrett Wang at Star Trek Las Vegas suggest that Paramount would have been better off if they would have made a Voyager movie instead of the much maligned Star Trek Nemesis. Wang told the crowd  quote “I think Voyager’s ‘Endgame,’ the final episode, the first hour was amazing,’ Wang said (via Trek Movie). ‘The second hour tied things up too quickly, right? They should have aired the first hour on your television screen and on the end say ‘To be continued in a theater near you’ and film a Voyager two and a half hour movie, got rid of the Nemesis script. Because let’s face it, if your TNG feature film script is not as good as certain TNG TV episodes, don’t film it. Sorry.”

Heck, I think they should have had Voyager return to the Alpha Quadrant  at the beginning of the movie only to have to team up with the Next Gen cast to defeat the Borg Queen for good.

Darn it. Bad News, Amazon’s adaptation of Galaxy Quest is on hold. Writer paul Scheer told the Wrap that the firing of Amy Powell as president of Paramount TV has hurt the project. Quote“We currently are in a little bit of a hold pattern because our executive at Paramount, Amy Powell, was fired for some insensitive comments,”  He went on to say that they want to create something that feel like an epic sequal to the movie, continuing the story while bringing in new characters. Quote “So it is mixing two casts. It’s separate kind of adventures that kind of merge, and I’m looking at this first season not as episodic, but as a serialized story,”. “So, the only way I’ve been looking at it is, using everything from the first movie and making the reasons for everything not just – I want to avoid anything that could be viewed as a reboot for reboot’s sake. There are real reasons behind these choices – maybe too much so.” Unquote

So think of it has a movie told in a season long arc.

Franchise Fatigue. To define it simply, it’s when too much of a property is produced in too short of a time period without much distinction between products causing fans to walk away because they’ve seen it all.

In the early 2000’s Star Trek found itself mired in it. Star Trek Enterprise ended and no new films or series were planned. The property was dormant for four years until JJ Abrams launched the Kelvin Timeline movies.

Now Star Trek is back with new series on CBS All Access and multiple movies on the horizon. Ronald D. Moore, veteran writer from the golden age of the franchise in the 90’s spoke about it during a panel at Star Trek Las Vegas quote“When you say something like franchise fatigue, to me, it means that particular flavor had run dry,” Moore said during a panel at Star Trek Las Vegas (via Trek Movie). “To mix my metaphors, essentially that way of doing Star Trek, that way of telling story, and those kinds of stories had run its course. You could just see in the shows. It had fatigue. It was tired. It wasn’t really engaging anymore or felt like it was just standing in place.” unquote

Moore than went on to say that the key to overcoming the fatigue is to bring in new talent, new ideas and a willingness to change the rules of the franchise.

Ron than spoke about the concerns about the new Trek franchise and that having new Trek year round won’t be a problem as long as CBS is providing distinct offerings.

Quote“Where you are now it’s like, okay, it’s all been reinvented, it looks completely different, the style is very different, the stories are different, so it doesn’t feel like you’re in danger of franchise fatigue just because there’s a lot of them coming out,” he said. “If they’re all the same or if they just start becoming the same meal over and over again, then you’ll run into fatigue and they’ll have the same problems.” Unquote

Are you worried that Trek might run into franchise fatigue faster when they have Trek year round?

Speaking of CBS All Access, CBS and Amazon have announced that the limited commercial version of All Access is now available as an Amazon Channel. The commercial free version has been available since last year.

Wil Wheaton has walked away from Twitter. He took part in #DeactiDay a movement meant to encourage Twitter users to deactivate their accounts either temporarily or permanently. Posting on twitter he said quote Twitter is broken. You deserve better than an app that tolerates and welcomes the spreading of abuse and misinformation. Being part of this is not doing us any good. Personally, politically, socially. For a day, a week, forever: your call. It’s just a good time to go. #DeactiDay unquote

Wil has been constantly taunted with Shut Up Wil memes for years. ON one hand, I don’t blame him for wanting to get away from that. On the other, I think he should have embraced those memes and made it part of his brand.

Wil, come on back to twitter, rise above this and show those haters that you’re bigger than they are.

The news that Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth have walked away from the negotiating table means Star Trek 4 is in jeopardy. Might it be time for the film franchise to go another way? In an interview with CNET John Cho says that he would be interested in a spinoff movie starring Hikaru Sulu. In reference to the Star Wars spinoff movies like Solo:A Star Wars story. “If Solo, why not Sulu?” “I don’t know if there is a day shooting Star Trek where Chris Pine did not call me Solo.” That aside, Cho doesn’t know anything about the next Star Trek movie telling CNET that he quote “I know very little about this,” Cho says. “I’ve heard we’re going to do one. But beyond that, I don’t have details. I’d rather not know; I don’t want to lie. The boring answer is to wait for the powers that be to make a decision.” unquote  Well listen to my show John and if the news breaks I’ll let you know about it.

All right brain storming time, what DC or Marvel role would be a good fit for Denzel Washington? Denzel, on the press tour for his new sequel The Equalizer 2 said he is open to joining a superhero franchise. However he quote “I haven’t been approached… we’ll see what happens,” Unquote Denzel has done a comic book adaptation before costaring with Mark Wahlberg in 2 Guns.
