Tonight! Baby Yoda makes toast, CBS All Access gets a new name, The Emmy Awards and we remember Dame Diana Rigg. Mrs. Peel.. We’re needed on Multiverse Tonight!

Hello and Welcome to episode 94. This year just doesn’t play fair, does it. Now it’s really turned the heat up on the election by taking Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg making this election THE most important election in living memory. If you  can vote, do it.

Star Wars

The second season of The Mandalorian will be headed back to Tatooine. The series visited Mos Eisley in season one and hinted at the presence of Boba Fett. Could season two have something to do with Boba? Who knows. New episodes start on Disney Plus on October 30th.

The Baby Yoda merchandising train just keeps going. The muppet has made a mint for the mouse. This time it’s a toaster. Yep, a toaster. The green 2 slice toaster has an illustration of Mando and The Child on the side and makes toast with the face of the child burned in it.  It retails for about 35 dollars.

If you’ve ever wanted to shoot Lego Greedo, you’re about to get your chance. Lego’s Mos Eisley Cantina set is coming. This is a deluxe version of the previous sets and is designed for master builders. The final product will measure over 7.5” (19cm) high, 20.5” (52cm) wide and 23” (58cm) deep when opened up and includes a removable roof, attachable buildings, Landspeeders minifigs of Ponda Baba, Dr. Evazan, Garindan, Kardue’Sai’Malloc, three members of the Cantina band, Jawa, Sandtroopers, a Dewback, and more. Plus, the set is also packed with details like a “Wanted” poster featuring R2D2 and C- 3PO, and the kyber crystals hidden in one of the exterior buildings.

The 3187 piece set comes out on October first for the price of a big screen tv, 349.99.

Daisy Ridley’s Rey wasn’t always going to be the granddaughter of the Emperor. They were toying with several possible suspects including at one point being the descendant of Obi-Wan. Telling Josh Gad quote “No, at the beginning they were toying with an Obi-Wan connection,” Ridley said of the dangling plot thread. “There were different versions and at one point she was no one… it kept changing.” unquote. Frankly, I don’t think the parentage of Rey is anything substantial. It’s a minor detail. Not worth getting upset over.

Obi-Wan will finally get to go in front of cameras for Disney Plus next spring according to series star Ewan McGregor. Ewan told Entertainment Weekly quote”Spring next year we start, so I’m really excited about it,” McGregor shared with Entertainment Tonight. “I’m super excited about it, it’s going to be great I think. There’s no talk of [a second season] it’s pretty much as I understand it a standalone season. But we’ll see, who knows?” unquote

Star Trek

Star Trek Discovery is coming to Star Trek Fleet Command. Scopely’s Star Trek Discovery Arc is the first non-KElvin Timeline Star Trek Property in the game. You get the Discovery ship, officers like Michael Burnham and Saru, a battle pass that offers new content and resources, and Anomaly Events that allow players to battle alongside the Discovery for a limited time.

A new official Star Trek podcast is now out. CBS Television Studios and the Star Trek Global Franchise Group announced the new podcast called Star Trek The Pod Directive. Hosting the podcast is Lower Decks star Tawny Newsome and comedian Paul F Tompkins. According to the press release quote “With unparalleled access to Star Trek luminaries, celebrity super-fans and behind-the-scenes creative professionals, Star Trek: The Pod Directive takes a smart, witty and thoughtful look at all things Trek – both old and new. Offering a high-level discussion of the themes, ideas, and characters that resonate across the history of the franchise’s storied universe, episodes will also explore the brand’s 50-plus-year legacy and influence. Each episode features an in-depth personal interview with a notable guest, coverage of a Star Trek event, or a discussion of a specific topic with one or more guests.” Guests slated for the show include Ben Stiller, Michelle Hurd, Mike McMahan, Stacey Abrams, astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti and Jeff Russo. Episodes will be weekly coming out on Mondays through the beginning of November.

In advance of Star Trek Discovery and to celebrate Star Trek’s anniversary. ViacomCBS put out a new updated Star Trek timeline. The timeline showcases  on the timeline include The launch of the NX Enterprise, The founding of the Federation, the Kelvin timeline divergence, Star Trek Discovery going all the way to The Lower Decks and Star Trek Picard and ending in Discovery’s third season in the distant future. https://www.startrek.com/videos/watch-a-timeline-through-the-star-trek-universe

Speaking of Discovery’s third season, Kenneth Mitchell is no stranger  to the show, having played three different Klingons in the show’s first two seasons, this time he’s back without having to sit in a long makeup season. Speaking with the Official Star Trek Magazine he talked about his new character quote “I’m playing a human character,” Mitchell says. “It’s beautiful, and I’m excited for the fans to meet him. I am also thankful for the continued support of Alex (Kurtzman), Michelle Paradise, Olatunde (Osunsanmi), Jonathan Frakes and everyone at Secret Hideout, who made it happen for me.” unquote However don’t look for him right away as his character doesn’t show until later in the season.

We also received news that CBS All Access will be rebranding itself to

The more universal name Paramount Plus early next year. The new name will also come with an expansion of origins content and it’s archive of programming.  One of the reasons for the change was addressed by ViacomCBS president and CEO Bob Bakish telling Variety quote “Paramount is an iconic and storied brand beloved by consumers all over the world, and it is synonymous with quality, integrity and world-class storytelling,” said Bob Bakish, president-CEO of ViacomCBS. “With Paramount Plus, we’re excited to establish one global streaming brand in the broad-pay segment that will draw on the sheer breadth and depth of the ViacomCBS portfolio to offer an extraordinary collection of content for everyone to enjoy.” Unquote New shows in the work include another reboot of THe Game, a spinoff of the CW and BET show Girlfriends and a 10 issue limited series about producer Al Ruddy’s experiences of the shooting of The Godfather.

A little news about Strange New Worlds, during the show’s Star Trek Day panel, Rebecca Romijn hinted that Number One’s back story will be told quote “Well, like ‘The Cage’ being such an old pilot, the writers have this very unique opportunity where they’ve had this character that’s existed since the beginning of the canon, and she’s never been written,” Romijn says. “I can’t wait to find out how vast her skill set is. What are the arrows in her quiver? My number one question is, ‘What’s her backstory?’ And I had a delightful meeting with the writers’ room a couple of months ago, and they floated an idea for Number One’s backstory that I’m not going to share right now because it blew my mind when they said it, but that’s all I can say.” unquote

Some movie news. Noah Hawley told Variety that his movie is in a state of stasis until the new president of the studio recalibrates. He told them that they had finished the script and gotten to the designer hiring phase when the pause button was pressed.  He also said that it would have been a completely different cast of characters quote “We’re not doing Kirk and we’re not doing Picard,” he says. “It’s a start from scratch that then allows us to do what we did with ‘Fargo,’ where for the first three hours you go, ‘Oh, it really has nothing to do with the movie,’ and then you find the money. So you reward the audience with a thing that they love.”

The Matrix 4 will be a love story according to star Keanu Reeves. Speaking with the BBCs The ONe Show, he described the plot as quote “We have a wonderful writer and director, Lana Wachowski, and she’s really written a beautiful, beautiful script that is a love story, it’s inspiring, it’s another version of a kind of call to wake up, and entertains, great action. And all will be revealed,”

One note before we get to our final story tonight, right before taping I learned of the death of actor Michael Lonsdale had passed away at the age of 89. Lonsdale appeared in over 200 films and TV shows during his 60-year career, though most fans know him best as the villain in the 1979 James Bond movie, Moonraker. Appearing as Hugo Drax in Moonraker, Lonsdale established himself as one of the most memorable Bond villains over the years, going toe-to-toe with Sir Roger Moore’s 007 in a fight for the fate of the world.

Tonight we remember Dame Diana Rigg, the british actress who is best known for starring as agent Emma Peel on the classic british series The Avengers in the sixties.Diana was born in Donchester in 1938 When she grew up,   Rigg started with a successful career as a stage actress in 1957, joining The Royal Shakespeare Society in 1959. She started her television career with a bit part in a tv production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She hit it big in 1965 during the fourth series of The Avengers, she left the show in 1968, a year later she was opposite George Lazenby in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, her character was the only won to win James Bond’s hand in marriage (only to meet her end at the end of the film.) She’d go on to many other shows and movies in the future including movies The Worst Witch, and The Great Muppet Caper and shows like You, Me and The Apocalypse, Doctor Who,and  Game of Thrones. She won during her acting career the Bafta Award, a Tony Award, an Emmy Award and in 1994 was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Diana Rigg died in her London home on September tenth from cancer, she was 84.

Catwoman did one thing for Halle Berry’s career and it wasn’t to end it.  The actress says the Razzie award winning bonfire of a comics movie made her want to direct. Telling Variety quote “The story didn’t feel quite right,” Berry explained to Variety. “I remember having that argument: ‘Why can’t Catwoman save the world like Batman and Superman do? Why is she just saving women from a face cream that cracks their face off?’ But I was just the actor for hire. I wasn’t the director. I had very little say over that.” unquote She’s currently directing a new sports drama called Bruised.

Wonder Woman 1984 has been moved to Christmas, as it has been chased through the 2020 calendar to the literal end. In a statement WW 1984 director Patty Jenkins said quote “First and foremost let me say how much Gal and I love all our devoted Wonder Woman fans around the world, and your excitement for ‘WW84’ couldn’t make us happier or more eager for you to see the movie,””Because I know how important it is to bring this movie to you on a big screen when all of us can share the experience together, I’m hopeful you won’t mind waiting just a little bit longer. With the new date on Christmas Day, we can’t wait to spend the holidays with you!” unquote THe new release date puts it a week after the new adaptation of Dune, West Side Story and Coming 2 America, the sequel to Coming to America. We will still see if any of those hold true.

December also brings us winter, in DC’s case it’s an Endless Winter. Ron Marz and Andy Lanning are queuing up the next DC crossover event Justice League Endless Winter. The mini series, told over the Justice League titles and bookended by two specials will run the entire month of December, in an interview with Comic Book Resources, Marz an d Lanning promoted the crossover that sees parallel storylines between the present day DCU and 10 century Vikings battling the new villain The Frost King. Marz told the site quote

The seeds of the story are really planted in the 10th century and, as you see the issues, you’ll see that literally and figuratively. Every issue will have this sequence set in the 10th century which includes what we’re calling, for our own purposes, the Justice League Viking which is Hippolyta, Black Adam, Viking Prince and Swamp Thing. The notion being that there’s a collection of heroes in every era, and this is the heroes that come together in that era. What goes on in the past very much dictates how this comes back in the present — and I guess we can say the threat is called the Frost King — how the mistakes in the past dictate how things go in the present and learning the lessons in the past is what is the necessary function for the Justice League now. There are connections to the past that dictate how things go in the present, both for good and for ill. Unquote

Batman Beyond comic is being axed with December’s issue 50. Part of the fallout from the WarnerMedia cuts at DC. Here’s the promo for the final issue quote: The finale of Dan Jurgens’s iconic run on Batman Beyond finds Terry McGinnis accused of crimes he didn’t commit! When one of his greatest rogues, the formidable Inque, poses as Batman and causes havoc around Gotham City, Wonder Woman will stop by to confront Batman Beyond. Will Terry be able to convince her that he’s innocent or will he find himself the enemy of one of the DC Universe’s greatest heroes? The epic conclusion of the series is here!

Now let’s talk about the second installment of DC Fandome, the second one was titled Explore The Multiverse…

The sequel to the first Shazam movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods will definitely see more of the Shazam family in action. Director David F Sandberg said at DC Fandome quote “Now they’re all superheroes, they’re all a family with superpowers. And now we finally get to see that,””We only got a glimpse of that in the first movie, so that’s something to look forward to.” The movie should start shooting next year and will be released in November of 2022.

The Flash season seven will definitely look at the mysterious speedster Godspeed this season. Showrunner Eric Wallace said about the mystery quote

“I don’t like spoilers, let’s just say there was a certain speedster who wore a white costume, whose clones kept showing up,” Wallace explained. “Really, Team Flash has to deal with that, but we never caught the real guy or girl. Let’s just say we might find out that mystery this season.”

Also discussed was how events in our world will affect the series, especially Joe. Eric Wallace said quote “The world right now is on fire,” “We have to look at what’s around us. It definitely informs specifically Joe’s story, but in a good way, and in a positive way because we need to be socially responsible as artists. Yes, I love comic books, and The Flash, but I’m a person first. We have to be people first and work together to make the world a better place. I believe that that’s where those changes are coming from so yeah, you’ll notice some changes, definitely.”

The Batwoman season looked at Javica Leslie stepping into the Batwoman role. Showrunner Caroling Dries talked about Javicas audition saying quote “When Javicia auditioned, it was obvious to everyone watching the tape in like five seconds,” Dries explained. “[It was] over Zoom and I texted somebody on the computer in the chat like ‘Oh she gets it!’ It just was so clear that Javicia was meant for this role. And then when I talked to her she said, ‘You know, I feel like I am Ryan. My friend heard me audition and she was like ‘Yo, you are Ryan.” It just feel like destiny, which is kind of one of the themes of the season.”

“And then the other thing she did, which I didn’t even see until after I knew she was Batwoman, was she had this athlete reel or athleticism reel, of all of like a montage of all of her [stunt],” Dries added. “One of the things that she did was pushing this giant tire over, like somersaults. And I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, all I needed to do is see you.’ I told her ‘You had me a tire flip.’ She just brings everything, sort of – intellect, emotion, heart, athletics. Everything you know you want in your hero. I think she had to do a really hard thing which is take a role for a script that didn’t exist yet. And she was willing to trust us with it. So that’s awesome.” unquote

Also talked about during the panel is what the other characters will think of this new Batwoman. Nicole Kang said quote “I’m especially excited to see this new relationship happen, in the wake of Mary dealing with this mysterious disappearance, and how she decides to sort of take it and take it hard,” Nicole Kang, who plays Mary Hamilton on the series, explained. “She’s been a person who, I think, is always looking for family, is always looking for community, is always looking for somebody to see her. Which is, I think, a huge source of why the clinic exists for her, there are just much deeper personal reasons for that. And I think Mary and Ryan sort of have that in common, perhaps, which is why I think Mary really looks to Ryan, in this way.”

“I’m actually really excited because there was this triangle between Alice, Kate Kane, and Mary,” Kang added. “And, you know, without Kate actively in that triangle. I’m really really interested to see sort of Mary, and Alison’s relationship and where that goes. Because there’s a lot that has been dealt with, and Kate was a buffer of sorts, between them and so without that, anything could happen.” unquote

Rachel Skarsten said about Alice’s reaction quote “I think Alice is just going to be peeved,” Skarsten revealed. “Here she has this beautifully intricate plan for the demise of her sister! And that will have been foiled. But she is also going to have a lot to be worried about, since we’re introducing a new character Safiyah, who Alice had talked about in the last season. The introduction of Safiyah will be intriguing just because this is a sort of a backstory of Alice that we haven’t had the opportunity to see before.” unquote New episodes are due next year.

The Flash movie was also presented. Producer Barbara Muschietti hinted that quote “Well, I want you to go see it, so I’m not going to tell you a lot,” Muschietti explained. “But what I will tell you is that it’s a ride. It’s going to be fun and exciting and there are a lot of DC characters in it. Flash is the superhero of this film because he is the bridge between all of these characters and timelines. And in a way, it restarts everything and doesn’t forget anything.” unquote Sounds like this movie might be a soft reboot of the DCU movies. Let’s hope in the direction of less GrimDark.

Superman and Lois will see a new Superman Suit according to showrunner Todd Helbing talking about the suit worn by Tyler Hoechilin in the arrowverse appearances quote “Originally, when you came on for the crossovers, that suit just wasn’t built to sustain a series,” “And I think just in everything that we were talking about earlier, you know, ‘Crisis’ gave us this fresh slate. Yeah, let’s, let’s make a new suit. So, there’s gonna be a really badass Superman suit in this show.”

The series stars Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent/Superman, Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane, Jordan Elsass as Jonathan Kent, Alex Garfin as Jordan Kent, Superman and Lois’ sons, as well as Emmanuelle Chriqui as Lana Lang and Erik Valdez as Lana’s husband, Kyle Cushing. The show is expected this January.

Changes are coming to the DC Universe streaming service, first up, Harley Quinn, Doom Patrol and Titans are moving to HBO Max. So what does this mean for the DC Universe? It’s becoming Infinite, come January it will be rechristened DC Universe Infinite and will have 24,000 comics from DCs library with new comics added to the service six months after their release date, plus online only books like Harley Quinn Black + White + Red and Batman The Adventures Continue will be on the service after only 3 months. The service will also finally expand to international markets in the summer of 2021.

Marvel

It’s a series that shows the character behind the characters!” unquote

Geek

We begin Geek News tonight with a moment of good news, Keeping up with the Kardashians will be ending in 2021. Our long national nightmare is over…anyway…

Paramount Animation has acquired the rights to the Image Comics title Stray Dogs and has hired Game Night writer Mark Perez to write and Gary Dauberman to produce the adaptation described as quote “Silence of the Lambs meets Lady and the Tramp.” Don’t bother looking on shelves for the comic, Image hasn’t released the comic yet. The comic comes from Tony Fleecs and Trish Forstner, known for their work on IDW’s My Little Pony Friendship is Magic.   A true horror story…

Sony has pulled Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s animated movie Connected a month before it was due to be released. The description of the movie is quote “Sony Pictures Animation’s Connected is an original animated comedy from director Mike Rianda (Gravity Falls) and producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Lego Movie), about an everyday family’s struggle to relate while technology rises up around the world! When Katie Mitchell (voiced by Abbi Jacobson), a creative outsider, is accepted into the film school of her dreams, her plans to meet “her people” at college are upended when her nature-loving dad Rick (voiced by Danny McBride) determines the whole family should drive Katie to school together and bond as a family one last time.”

“Katie and Rick are joined by the rest of the family, including Katie’s wildly positive mom Linda (voiced by Maya Rudolph), her quirky little brother Aaron (voiced by Mike Rianda), and the family’s delightfully chubby pug Monchi for the ultimate family road trip. Suddenly, the Mitchells’ plans are interrupted by a tech uprising: all around the world, the electronic devices people love – from phones, to appliances, to an innovative new line of personal robots – decide it’s time to take over. With the help of two friendly malfunctioning robots, the Mitchells will have to get past their problems and work together to save each other and the world!” unquote No word on if it will get a new release date or will just be sent out on Video On Demand.

2020 has taken a lot from us and now it’s taken one of my favorite shows, Adult Swim announced that it has canceled The Venture Bros after seven seasons. Jackson Publik confirmed the terrible new via twitter saying quote

“Unfortunately, it’s true: ‘Venture Bros.’ has been canceled. We got the highly disappointing news a few months ago, while we were writing what would have been season 8. We thank you, our amazing fans, for 17 years of your kind (and patient) attention. And, as always, we love you. Unquote However there might be a ray of hope in this dark cloud, Variety spoke with Adult Swim who said that they were looking for a way to continue the story with Jackson and Doc Hammer. So maybe an online only show? Say on HBO Max?  Please?

And that brings us to the end of the comic book news. *Show Ender*

Show Notes: Episode 66: Let The Child waffle about Picard & Episode 67:That Batmobile is not street legal

Tonight! The Why of Picard, The Child makes waffles and we remember the Man who brought Ming The Merciless to life! All that and more on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to Episode 66 of Multiverse tonight. I have some sad news to start this episode. I’ve had a death in the family. Our dog Fanny has passed away. She stopped eating and drinking a few days ago and then on Sunday she passed away. It hurts, but I know I’ll get over it. To quote George Carlin, “Life is a series of dogs.” unquote And Fanny was a very good dog.

Star Trek

So you’ve been watching Star Trek Picard, but you have concerns about the violence in darkness especially the recent scenes in the episode Stardust City rag where we saw poor Icheb getting unwanted surgery and Seven of Nine deciding to go all Dirty Harry on the person who killed her friend. Some fans have even taken their concerns to Showrunner Michael Chabon on his Instagram. His answer quote “I am not unambivalent about the violence, myself,” Chabon writes on Instagram. “The choice was not made lightly, though it was made collaboratively, and therefore with a good deal of conversation and debate among the creators. And so I assure you that it is not there simply ‘because we can,’ or because we are trying, as you somewhat uncharitably put it, to be ‘in.’ My partners would all have their own reasons for its presence in this story, as some of us had our own reasons for shying away from it. For me, it came down to this: there has always been violence (and even torture) in Star Trek. Sometimes that violence has been implicit, sometimes explicit, according to the dictates of censorship, the nature of the situation being depicted, the aesthetic of individual creators, or technical and/or budgetary limitations. And the reason that there has always been violence in Trek is that Trek is art, and there has always been violence—implicit and explicit—in art. It belongs there. It belongs in any narrative about human beings, even human beings of the future. Violence, often, *is* the narrative. Its source. Its engine. The question of whether it’s “too much” or not is ultimately a matter of taste. Personally, I come out closer to the “less is more” end. But that is just me. In the end, I saw how little time and space we had to convey a sense of Seven’s history post-Voyager, and the things that drive and haunt her. I decided, with my partners, that intensity was warranted. Seven lives outside the rationale confines of the Federation, because that is where she finds her sense of purpose. But life is hard, out there. If it wasn’t, people wouldn’t need her help so badly. And she wouldn’t have found such a compelling reason to carry on, in spite of her history of trauma. But, I hear you.” unquote

In other words, it was a necessary evil in order to tell the story

However Mister Chabon wasn’t finished, he also talked about the show’s tone and how it reflects our current reality. Quote “First of all, I think that the phrase (or a version of it) ‘Star Trek has always reflected its time” is open to multiple, potentially conflicting interpretations,’ he writes. “It can mean, ‘Individual Star Trek series have always (consciously) reflected thematically many of the most pressing issues of the time when they were made.’ I think that’s the sense intended by people involved with making the two current series, and it’s pretty obviously true—starting with persistent themes of nuclear annihilation, racial prejudice, mechanization, totalitarianism vs liberal democracy, on TOS, through DS9 with its themes of individual vs group identity, chosen family, reason vs faith, and the inevitable moral compromises of war. (That’s only the *conscious* ways in which Trek has reflected the times in which it was made.) But the phrase could also be taken the way (I think) you take it: that the world, the milieu depicted by Star Trek—the characters and their interactions, their capabilities and limitations as individuals, the social institutions and mores and technologies and economics and culture—reflects the world and era in which it was made. I think you’re saying that this is wrong, that here is exactly where Trek doesn’t, hasn’t. and *shouldn’t* reflect the world and times. That it has always presented its crews, Starfleet, and the Federation as improvements, as realizations of our best potential, as aspirational. If Trek has reflected our world, it’s in a kind of utopian funhouse mirror, where everything looks better. I would say that by and large that has been true, though possibly not as to the degree that many Trek fans claim, or feel. But there’s another side to the world—the people and society—depicted in Star Trek, which is all the characters, planets, cultures, mores and interactions that take place outside of Starfleet, the Federation. Many of these “outside” cultures and characters—the empires and alliances and unions— *have* deliberately reflected aspects of our world, with its all imperfection, intolerance, brutality, its humiliations and injustices, its evils. I don’t mean just in a thematic sense, but in the behavior of individual non-Federation, non-Starfleet characters, in the construction of societies around prejudices and inequalities, violence, lust for power, etc.

“That brings us to Picard. In the one, long, ten-part story we’re telling, we’re asking two questions about the greater world of Star Trek (i.e, the Federation *and* everything outside the Federation). One—a venerable Star Trek question, with a long pedigree in previous series and films: What happens when the Federation, the Roddenberry Federation with all its enlightened and noble intentions, free from want, disease, (internal) war, greed, capitalism, intolerance, etc., is tested by forces inimical to its values? What happens when two of its essential principles; (security and liberty, say) come into conflict? The answer has to be—at first, it buckles. It wobbles. It may, to some extent, compromise or even betray its values, or at the very least be sorely tempted to do so. If not, there’s no point asking the question, though it’s a question that any society with aspirations like ours or the Federation’s needs to ask. If nothing can ever truly test the Federation, if nothing can rock its perfection, then it’s just a magical land. It’s Lothlorien, in its enchanted bubble, untouchable by the Shadow. And, also, profoundly *inhuman*. To me it’s the humanity of the Federation—which means among many admirable things, its imperfection, its vulnerability and the constant need to defend it from our own worst natures—that makes it truly inspiring. The other, related question we’re asking is: What about the people who live outside, at the edges (or even within) the Federation but who, for various reasons, aren’t quite *of* it. Ex-Starfleet officers, refugees, people like Seven who served on a Starfleet ship but was never actually in Starfleet. People who have fallen through the cracks, or fallen victim to their own weaknesses. What is life like for people who, for whatever reason, live beyond the benevolent boundaries of the Federation—where, for example, post-scarcity is a dream, and there is a monetary economy? Again, there is precedent for this kind of story on Trek, but the fact that our story only resolves over ten episodes, not one, or two, or four out of a season of 23, might make it feel, sometimes, that there is more darkness, more trauma in our characters’ lives. More *struggle.* This show unquestionably has darker tonalities than some others (DS9 is the standout exception). It lives more in the shadows, where the Federation’s light can’t always reach. That isn’t to condemn, criticize, undo, break or, god knows, betray the Federation or Gene Roddenberry’s vision. Shadow defines light.

Every new Trek series since TNG has sought to escape what can feel like the confines of previous series, not simply of canon (which can also be a strangely liberating force) but of the kinds of stories, about the kinds of characters and societies, that have already been told. Each new series has expressed this impulse to “light out for the territories” in a different way. TNG went a century into the future of TOS. DS9 went onto a station full of aliens that was both beyond the edge of the Federation and next to a wormhole that led to the Gamma Quadrant. VOY put 70k light-years between it and its predecessors, and introduced a raft of new species and worlds. ENT went deep into the early past of the Federation. Next season’s DIS goes to the Trek universe’s far-future.

“The space we found for Picard is not ‘dark Federation.’ It’s one of people who live and work at or beyond the margins of the Federation who travel beyond its boundaries to find the truth.” unquote Well we can definitely say he’s a writer, that was a lot of words.

He also had more to say on Twitter when asked if  there was a connection between the state of the Federation in Picard and the state of the Federation in the 32nd century that Discovery season three will take place in. Mister Chabon replied quote “‘Federation downfall?’ What Federation downfall? The Federation is still very much alive and well and home to trillions (quadrillions?) of safe, housed, fed, educated citizens with the potential to lead fulfilling lives,” Chabon said. “There was a crisis 15 years ago, in the wake of the costly Dominion War and the Romulan emergency, which had a negative impact on the lives of many people, including most of our principal characters, in one way or another, during which Starfleet (and by extension the Federation) did not acquit itself well – in Picard’s eyes. From Admiral Clancy’s viewpoint, which is likely the mainstream view, Picard’s attitude was unrealistic, quixotic, and even dangerous. She may be right! They may both be right, and both wrong. But that was fifteen years ago, and the Federation is still going strong. Perhaps in the eyes of some it lost its luster, its air of invulnerability, its claim to the moral high ground, a process that began during DS9 times. That is hardly a ‘downfall’, though.” unquote

As to another fans question as to why Picard doesn’t make reference to the Dominion War in the show Chabon answered that he had planned to originally but was convinced not to by colleagues that doing so might confuse newer fans. Bad move Chabon, for one. Fans know about it. New fans will go back and watch DS9 to find out about it or they’ll find out about it from the internet. It’s all right to have continuity that not everyone has seen. People are adaptable. You’re kinda telling us that we’re not smart enough to do the homework. Again, bad move. Trust your audience.

Robert Picardo says that he’s in talks to appear in season two of Picard. He could either appear as the EMH creator Lewis Zimmerman, an EMH, or The Doctor. He’s quoted as saying “I am pleased that they (CBS) have expressed interest in me,” “They have reached out to my agent about next season. So I’m looking forward to seeing what it is. As you know I play two characters, primarily the Doctor but also Lewis Zimmerman. Lewis Zimmerman, the engineer who created the Doctor’s program, certainly would have aged. He’s in the same timeline as Patrick Stewart and all the [Star Trek: The Next Generation] folk. The Doctor, of course, like Data doesn’t age, but there are ways to address that, as we all know. I joked the other day that my daughter does visual effects, that’s exactly what she does is digitally correct actors so I said, ‘If they hire the two of us, she could make me look 25 years younger. Anyway, it will interesting to see when something happens, if something but, but I might have a chance to be onscreen with Jeri again. It would be an honor and a delight, obviously, to have scenes with Patrick Stewart so, you know, we’ll keep our fingers crossed.”

Star Trek Voyager is turning twenty five, so far we’ve seen Jeri Ryan return as seven of nine on Picard and  a group getting a monument erected in Captain Janeway’s hometown of Bloomington Illinois. Now 455 films is producing a documentary about the series. 455 films has previously done the Star Trek documentaries, the Captains, Chaos on the Bridge and For the Love of Spock. Studio president David Zappone hinted about what was coming on twitter saying quote  “Okay. Who likes Star Trek Voyager, and thinks it deserves to have a documentary to commemorate its 25th anniversary?” unquote He also confirmed that they will be filming during Star Trek : The Cruise IV filming testimonials from Voyager fans. The cruise this year has a Voyager theme and guests on the cruise include Kate Mulgrew, Jeri Ryan, Robert Picardo, Roxann Dawson, Ethan Phillips, Tim Russ, and Garrett Wang. No word on when the documentary will be out, but I’m guessing this fall.

So, have you ever been watching the classic episode The Trouble with Tribbles and wondered how long it would have taken to fill up the ship with the cooing balls of fur? No? Well someone has to answer questions like this. So a group of undergrads at the University of Leicester in the UK calculated the growth rate of the tribbles and published a paper on it. It was a relatively simple calculation involving an exponential formula. Spock gave the initial set of variables in teh episode estimates that each tribble (born pregnant) can give birth to ten more tribbles in 12 hours and puts the number of tribbles on board after just three days at 1,777,561. The students, assuming that Spock’s assessment was correct and presuming that no tribbles died. They came to the estimate that it would take 18.4 x10 to the 9th power and also estimated that it would take 18.4×109 tribbles to entirely fill the USS Enterprise. That’s 18 billion, 400 million tribbles. So under those conditions, they came to the conclusion that it would take 4.5 days for tribbles to completely fill the ship. That’s a lot of tribbles. Of course, in the episode the tribbles had been poisoned to death by contaminated quadrotriticale. In that case the authors proposed a further paper saying quote “A further calculation including a ‘death term’ could be done, to find out how long it would take for the population to become extinct, if there was an unlimited supply of toxic grain,” unquote

Some sad news. Star Trek Discovery actor Kenneth Mitchell, who has played three different Klingons in Discovery’s first two seasons: Kol, Kol-Sha and Tenavik has revealed that he has been diagnosed with ALS aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease. He was originally diagnosed back in 2018. A few months ago in October, he was forced to use a wheelchair. In an interview with People magazine he said quote “The moment that they told us it was [ALS], it was like I was in my own movie,” “That’s what it felt like, like I was watching that scene where someone is being told that they have a terminal illness. It was just a complete disbelief, a shock.” “I’ll never forget, one of my Star Trek co stars told me, because they had dealt with some trying times with illnesses and stuff, and I remember them communicating to me, saying, ‘You have a choice. You can look at this in many different ways, but maybe try to look at this like a gift where you get to experience life in a way that most people don’t,” unquote However, he’s not going to try to be down about it, he told People that he and others are  looking into new roles with his diagnosis in mind.

Chewbacca actor Joonas Suotamo has a new baby daughter. Joonas and his wife Milla Pohjasvaara welcomed their second child on Friday the twenty eighth.  The man who took over the role of Chewy during the final movie in the sequel trilogy posted an announcement on Instagram with a caption on a photo of his daughter saying quote “We have some exciting news: we were blessed to welcome the newest member of our family!”“Our little princess (or senator, or general, or whatever she wants to be!) was born this week and is doing great. Unquote He went on to thank the hospital staff. And ended it with quote Welcome to the world Princess Bacca! Unquote He would later clarify that she has not been named yet and that Bacca is just a nickname. When her and her brother are older, maybe they should all go trick or treating as the Chewy family…or show up at Star Wars celebration in costume….or film an all new Star Wars holiday special….nah.

One of the complaints about the rise of skywalker was the feel of missing scenes. By the way, as an old timer, as someone who’s been around the block, the one thing I can tell you if you want different takes of scenes or missing scenes, check out the novelization of the comic adaptation. And sure enough, the novelization for The Rise of Skywalker has something that was missing when Ben Solo passed away. His last words. According to the book it goes like this quote  “A voice came to her through the Force, clear and strong. I will always be with you, Ben said, “She smiled. Let the truth of it wash over her. ‘No one’s ever really gone,’ she whispered.” unquote Bly the way, if you’re wondering if Ben’s force ghost “shows” up in the book? Nope. It’s been confirmed that there’s not a ghost of a chance of that. The novelization of Star Wars the rise of Skywalker comes out on March seventeenth The comic adaptation which sounds like it will have some added material as well, will come out this summer in June and the movie comes out on digital on that date and the disc versions hit shelves on March thirty first.

The Mandalorian will be premiering on ProSieben in Germany on MMarch 22nd prior to the launch of Disney Plus on March twenty fourth. The First episode will air as part of a Star Wars night on the broadcaster that ends with the German Free t premiere of The Last Jedi. However there is bad news for Amazon Fire users in germany as according to German tech News Site Heise Onlinen, Disney recently removed the Amazon media player from it’s supported device list. If that changes before launch I’ll let you know.

The Mandalorians Visual Production Supervisor for ILM Visual effects Ian Milham gave some behind the scenes explanations of how some of the scenes were brought to life. On twitter he wrote quote, For space fights, we populated the scene with lasers and explosions in different quadrants and distances, hooked them up to custom buttons on the iPad, and let the director go to town. Like playing X-Wing vs. TIE on a 70 ft screen. Season two of the Mandalorian comes out in October.

By the way there is now an official The Child Waffle Maker, although since it prints The child and The mandalorian logo on it, it looks more like a pancake than a waffle. A relatively flat waffle is always a pancake. If you want one they cost about 40 dollars and can be preordered from Gamestop. Gamestop, it’s still a thing.

Lucasfilm is preparing to launch new adventures in an old point in Star Wars history. Star Wars The High Republic takes place at the Galactic republic and Jedi Order’s high point some 200 years before the events of The Phantom Menace. Since this unexplored section of Galactic history is untapped the creators have free reign to make what they want. New adventures, new characters and new merchandising. In a statement Lucasfilm Publishing creative director Michael Siglain about this new venture said quote  “Star Wars: The High Republic features the Jedi as we’ve always wanted to see them — as true guardians of peace and justice. This is a hopeful, optimistic time, when the Jedi and the Galactic Republic are at their height. But of course, into this glorious new era something wicked this way comes,” says Lucasfilm publishing creative director Michael Siglain. “This initiative will give readers young and old a new corner of the galaxy to explore through rich, meaningful stories. Plus, readers will learn what scares the Jedi.”

The first books and comics are set to debut at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim in August with Star Wars The high republic ight of the Jedi being a massive interconnected story that’s told across various formats by various publishers. Syy has announced that the Magicians will be ending this April. THe show’s fifth season will be it’s last. The show, based on the series of novels by the same name, premiered back on Syfy in January of 2016 and has been one of the most consistent shows Syfy had on it’s schedule.  In a statement the channel said quote “‘The Magicians’ has been a part of our Syfy family for five fantastic seasons. As we near the end of this journey, we want to thank John McNamara, Sera Gamble, Henry Alonso Myers, Lev Grossman, and our entire brilliant cast, crew, writers and directors for their beautiful creation. But most of all, we thank the fans for their tremendous support and passion. Because of you, magic will be in our hearts forever,”

SYFY is definitely on a streak now, they’ve also canceled the third annual Leprechaun St. Patrick’s Day Marathon. The past couple of years, the network has aired all the Leprechaun movies back to back, this year it will just show Leprechaun’s Revenge and Leprechaun Returns.  Well I guess you can always stream the rest.

Jason Blum would love to build himself a Frankenstien….movie. Talking with the Evolution of Horror Podcast the producer said quote “I’d love to do Frankenstein. I’ve tasked our filmmakers with trying to figure out just straight Frankenstein,“”Again, I don’t know if someone else is doing it, I don’t know anything about it, but I would love to try and I’m waiting for the great idea. The Invisible Man, I agree, the best ideas feel like, ‘My gosh, it’s so obvious, why didn’t that happen before?’ If we could come up with something as good for Frankenstein, I’d love to try that.” unquote

Octavia E. Butler’s novel Dawn will be made into a tv series for Amazon. The drama has been given a direct to series order will be written and directed by Victoria Mahoney who was the second unit director on The Rise of Skywalker, she will be teaming up with Ava DuVernay, the director of Disney’s big budget A Wrinkle in Time adaptation. The novel was published in 1987 and follows s

around an African American woman who works with aliens to resurrect the human race some 250 years after a nuclear war. There is no word on when it will be produced or aired.

The tenth season of American Horror Story will have Macculy Culkin joining the cast for the new story. Ryan Murphy shared the news of the casting with an instagram video of what resembled the opening credits to the tune of Orville Pecks’ Dead of Night. Season ten will premiere in the fall of 2020.

Stranger things Finn Wolfhard is set to star in the thriller movie Rules For Werewolves based on a short film of the same name that also started Finn. The film will be based on writer Kirk Lynn’s debut novel which he also adapted for the screen. Deadline reports that the film quote “investigates the rituals and rhythms of a pack of wild teens as they break in and loot a new home, leaving someone (or something) behind for the cops to find.” unquote/ It’s also being reported that the movie will be done in one single take, mostly.

Well we’re gonna have to wait to find out about the new shows coming out in the Fall 2020 season. Due to fears about the spreading CoVid 19 corona virus, a lot of upfronts have been either cancelled or postponed. Also the new James Bond film No Time To Die has been pushed back from April to November and Peter Rabbit 2 has been pushed back from April to August. I’m guessing we’ll have to learn about what will get quickly cancelled some other way.

Actor Max Von Sydow has passed away. The man born Carl Adolf von Sydow was born on April 10, 1929 in Lund Sweden He grew up to star in more than 100 films and tv shows, including eleven films by famed director Ingmar Bergman including The Seventh Seal which saw him playing a chess game with death. Modern movie fans might know him as Father Lankester Merrin from The Exorcist and The Exorcist II, Ming The Merciless from Flash Gordon, King Osric in Conan the Barbarian. Doctor Kynes in Dune. The voice of Vigo the Carpathian in Ghostbusters II, Judge Fargo in Judge Dread, Director Lamar Burgess in Minority Report and Lor Saan Tekka in Star Wars The Force Awakens and many many more.

He was married twice and had two sons. Max Von Sydow died on March eighth at the age of 90.

Tonight! Lucifer’s sixth season might be reality, The Sandman becomes an audio drama and Etch A Sketch goes variants. All that and more on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to Episode 67 of Multiverse tonight. I’ve had quite a month. Got my tax refund, bought a second monitor for my studio, grieved over the loss of a favorite dog, now I have Planet Comicon in Kansas City in a week.  I don’t exactly know what I’ll get from Planet Comicon, some photos, definatly an interview with Author Dayton Ward, maybe an interview with an author or comic book person or two. We will see. This Con isn’t just a work thing for me, it’s really the only true vacation I get. Now if you’d like to see me go to more cons, you have to help fund me. Just go to my website Mutiversetonight.com.

DC

It looks like Lucifer might just get that sixth season. TV Line is reporting that Tom Ellis finalized a new deal for season six and a couple of weeks ago co showrunners Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson have inked season six deals. Netflix is currently in talks with Warner Bros TV to bring about one more season of the show. The show was rescued by Netflix back in 2018 after three seasons on Fox. Come on Warner Bros, just one more time!

Nathan Fillion is well traveled. He’s been in lots of franchises. Firefly, Buffy, the MCU and animated green lantern,  etc. His upcoming appearance in the Suicide Squad will be new franchise. So why join the DC Universe easy. Two words quote “James Gun.” Nathan told ET Canada quote “James Gunn (is) one of the people in my life that when he calls I just pick up the phone and say ‘yes to whatever you’re about to say, it’s yes, the answer is yes,'” “James Gunn is an amazing storyteller, that guy understands story and he loves to tell story. So when he wants to do something you know it’s gonna be fun, you know it’s gonna be satisfying… So here he is with Suicide Squad 2, he asks me to come down. What can I say about it? It’s so secret, I get stressed when people talk about it. Here’s what I can tell you though, huge scope. I’ve never done anything so big.” unquote.

The movie is still filming, having wrapped the Panama part of its production and is scheduled for release August sixth 2021.

Also wrapped work on the movie is actor David Dastmalchian. That news came via James Guns instagram saying quote “And that’s a wrap on @dastmalchian who gave me this amazing art by @lukas.ketner as a wrap gift! I happened to be wearing my @countcrowley T-shirt (Dave and Lukas’s great comic series). Thanks David – you’ve been amazing to work with in every way. I can’t wait for people to see what we’ve cooked up. ❤️,” unquote

Police in Moscow towed a homemade Batmobile. The replica on the Batmobile from Batman v Superman. According to a Moscow interior ministry spokesman, the vehicle was too wide for the city streets and had not been certified as roadworthy. The vehicle and it’s 32 year old driver was stopped in Moscow on a Saturday in western Moscow and towed away wrapped in tape and black plastic.  The cost of the vehicle was about 842,100 american.

The Batman has moved along the past couple of weeks. A photo of a batsuit has leaked as well as a pic of the batmobile. Too say I’m just not impressed yet….eh.  Well now a new member has joined the cast, Gill Perez-Abraham is in another unknown role. Gil has appeared on Orange is the New Black and Pose and he will also be seen in The walking Dead’s NEW spinoff The Walking Dead World beyond. Yep. Dear Warner Bros, I need more info than that. And while we’re on it AMC? STOP IT WITH THE WALKING DEAD, we’re tired of it already.  Anyway.

FX’s Y The last Man is still around and it has a new Yorick Brown. Variety has learned that Ben Schnetzer will be taken over the role. Originally Barry Keoghan was slated to star in the show based on the DC Comics series of the asme name. But he left earlier this month. Mr. Schnetzer joins a cast that includes Diane Lane, Imogen Poots and Amber Tamblyn. The show will start production in April.

Statues of Batman and Wonder Woman have been erected in London’s Leicester Square. To commemorate the three hundred fiftieth anniversary of the London landmark, bronze statues commemorating various cinematic icons have been put in the area. Batman’s statue depicts him on a rooftop standing triumphantly as he looks down at the ground below. Wonder Woman showcases the warrior princess charging forward and busting through a wall. Leicester Square have become synonymous with the british film industry for years. Movies have premiered at the Odeon Leicester Square Cinema, the Prince Charles Cinema has become famous for screening various cult favorites. Other statues include Paddington Bear, Mr. Bean, Mary Poppins, Laurel and Hardy, Bugs Bunny and Don Lockwood from Singin’ in the Rain. The statues will stay there until June.

Jim Lee says Dan Didio is irreplaceable. During his panel at C2E2, by the way for coverage of that, head on over to Scifi4me dot com. Jason and his wife were there all weekend and have some interesting takes, so go check it out. Anyway, at the panel DC last publisher standing and Chief Creative officer Jim Lee indicated that Didio will not be replaced quote “There’s continually new things going on, and I look at being sole publisher now and the team I’m working with. Much more in trenches now than ever before.” “We’ve been with Warner Bros. for decades,” “The actual strategy for DC is to put publishing at center of what we do. It’s the engine of all the movies, TV, cartoons, we do. And so its my intent going forward as the Publisher, to lean into the collective years of my team.” unquote.

By the way, those who have been concerned about DC’s demise. Lee  said quote “To address some of the stuff that is out there, there’s rumors… speculation,” Lee explained. “I wouldn’t put any credence into it. DC has been around for 85 years, and we’ll be around for another 85 years. I hope to be doing this panel in 85 years.” unquote. Unless he’s a head in a jar, my guess is no.

DC’s The Sandman will be adapted into a multipart audio drama for Amazon’s Audible. The series will be narrated and executive produced by Sandman co creator Neil Gaiman and written and directed by Dirk Maggs. In a statement Neil said quote “Almost 30 years ago, Dirk Maggs approached DC about adapting The Sandman into audio form,” Gaiman said in a statement. “I’m glad it didn’t happen, because we are in a Golden Age of audio drama right now, and Dirk and I are much better at what we are doing. This is a rich audio adaptation of The Sandman graphic novels, brilliantly crafted by Dirk Maggs, with an all-star cast.” The audio drama is scheduled to come out this summer with plans for French, German, Italian and Spanish editions soon after.

Marvel

Production on any level is demanding. But it’s really demanding if you’re making an action packed series like The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Star Anthony Mackie spoke with The Daily Beast about the demands on Marvel’s newest series and if there was any pressure. He told them quote . “Not at all. I feel like, if we’re going to fail, we should fail 100 percent. Don’t fail halfway,” Mackie said with a laugh. “But it’s been fun, man. There’s so much stuff going on in the Marvel Universe since Disney has gotten involved, and we have a really supportive team. It’s Victoria [Alonso] and Louis [D’Esposito] and Kevin [Feige] and all the other guys over there—we always have people we can talk to if we feel like stuff isn’t going right. So it’s been great. We’ve definitely stumbled a few times, but we’re running full steam ahead to get these shows done.” unquote The Falcon and The Winter Soldier comes to Disney Plus this August.

Speaking of the Disney Plus family of Marvel shows. Moon Knight is still a ways away…and it looks like it might be much later. According to Geeks WorldWide dot com, the filming date for the series has been pushed back to mid november at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. The lead has also not been casted yet for the role of Marc Spector, apparently they’re looking for a Zac Efron type.

Checking in with the She Hulk Show. Mark Ruffalo has confirmed that he’s in preliminary talks to appear in the show, which makes sense since Jennifer gets her powers because of a blood transfusion with her cousin. Marvel hasn’t cast She Hulk Jennifer Walters yet, but they are looking for an Alison Brie type. I don’t know maybe just hire Alison Brie?

Whoops. I’m guessing Vin Diesel wasn’t supposed to talk about this, but the actor in an interview to promote the Bloodshot movie, said quote “I am waiting and excited for my friend James Gunn to knock this next one out of the park,” Diesel said during an interview in promotion of his upcoming Bloodshot movie. “He took The Suicide Squad so he’s about to embark on it. Thor will also, the director talked to me about Thor will incorporate some of the Guardians of the Galaxy.” “That’ll be very interesting, nobody knows, maybe I shouldn’t have said anything.” unquote Now, yes, the news isn’t too much of a surprise as Thor did leave Earth with the Guardians, the question becomes how much of the Guardians we will see as the story is supposed to surround Jane Fosters gaining the power of Thor. Thor Love and Thunder comes out on November fifth, 2021.

The latest issue of Production Weekly reports that Spider-man Three will shoot under the title Serenity Now. Which is apparently taken from the sitcom Seinfeld. Which is appropriate because Homecoming shot under the title Summer of George, while far from home shot under the title Fall of George. Co Producer Eric Hauserman Carroll has said that the pick code names that make them giggle. Production is set to get underway in July.

Tom Holland,on the press tour for Pixar’s Onward  has revealed to MT International that Sony had a contingency plan in case Sony and Marvel Studios did take Spiderman from the MCU quote “The future of Spider-Man was still very bright with Sony we had a really, really wonderful idea of how we could sort of transition into a Spider-Man without the MCU,” “Tom Rothman and Amy Pascal were really confident they were going to do justice and make a film that was the caliber that Spider-Man requires.” “But that said, I’m really glad to be back in the MCU and to have the team back together because I kind of feel that’s where he belongs now. I’m really grateful that Bob Iger and Tom Rothman allowed me to be a part of the process of bringing him home. It was a pretty cool experience and also the best bragging rights ever: I saved Spider-Man.” unquote Don’t give yourself a big head Tom. You won’t be able to fit in your Spider suit. Stay humble.

Black Panther was a huge success, not only was it a great movie, but it had a great soundtrack and a real chart topper thanks to the song Pray for Me by Kendrick Lamar and The Weekend. However, they’re in trouble now as TMZ reports that a lawsuit has been filed against Kendrick and The Weekend for an alleged eight count of illegal sampling in the track with quote intent to conceal the infringement”” unquote. The lawsuit was filed by Yeasayer which claims that the samples were taken from their 2007 song Sunrise. The band claims that Sunrise uses a distinctive choral performance that incorporate the bands own voices in a high falsetto. Yeasayer are asking for all the profits from Pray for me, Damages and an injunction blocking further sales and airplay of the song.

The Boys is coming back and it’s not the tv series, it’s the comic. It’s been eight years since the last issue and now Garth Ennis is teaming back with Russ Braun for The Boys: Dear Becky. CBR dot com asked Garth how getting back into the series has been. He said quote Terrific. I hadn’t quite realized what an appalling mood I was in about the state of the world until I began to write about it in this series, and of course, there’s no better character for me to write when I’m pissed off than Billy Butcher. He’s even better than Frank Castle, whose problem is that he doesn’t know how to enjoy life. Billy does. Unquote . By the way Garth has no involvement with the second season of the Amazon show except reading the scripts. The Boys: Dear Becky #1 from Dynamite Entertainment goes on Sale in April.

The Official Pokemon Youtube channel has released this years top ten Pokemon, according to Pokemon fans. This year’s top Pokemon went to Greninja, a water/dark type Pokemon that first appeared back in 2013 in Pokemon X and Y.

So, did you see the Sonic the Hedgehog movie? It looks like redoing the look of Sonic did the trick as it’s generally gotten good reviews. Now you might ask yourself, why was it just Sonic and Dr. robotnik? Why not say a character like Knuckles is a part of the movie? Comic book dot cm had an interview with director Jeff Fowler. He told them quote “For this first film, we really were just looking at the 1991 game and just see where it all started and just keep it simple,” “Just really try to nail Sonic and Robotnik and just set up their rivalry because you don’t … I mean, I love … There’s a lot of great characters in Sonic universe, but it’s the most important thing is just to get Sonic set up and just tell a little bit of an origin story with him, and just do it in a way that really makes everyone fall in love with him as a character and just be rooting for more. And then, if all that goes well, then we can kind of open it up and bring in some of these other characters that fans know and love. And yeah, I mean, no one’s more excited than me to have that opportunity.” unquote Which you gotta admit, it’s the right approach. Knuckles or Tails can always show up in the sequel.

With his allowance discontinued by Hargreeves, he takes to a place where his ghoulish talents will be appreciated––Hollywood. After a magical high on a vampire-drug-lord’s stash, Klaus needs help, and doesn’t have his siblings there to save him.” unquote In a statement Gerard Way said quote”For a long time, I had wanted to tell the story of Klaus Hargreeves’ life after the Umbrella Academy disbanded and before the events of Apocalypse Suite,” Way said in a statement. “I imagined a pretty wild decade for Klaus– full of ups and downs, seedy places, supernatural excursions, and internal battles within himself. I am thrilled to finally be able to tell this story with my co-writer Shaun Simon, who sees the world of the UA as clearly as I do. Also thrilled to work with such an amazing art and lettering team in I.N.J. Culbard and Nate Piekos.” unquote

Show Notes: Episode 50:Deal with Star Wars Diversity and Episode 51: Warner Bros. goes Blue

Tonight! A Discovery star gets engaged, Rian Johnson has words for diversity haters,  and Disney Plus is doing just fine on this fiftieth edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to the scifi edition of Multiverse Tonight.

Episode fifty, pretty snazzy. I thank all of you watching and listening.

So, have you started watching Disney Plus? What was the first thing you started watching? Probably the Mandalorian. Not me. I watched The Black Hole. Pretty decent sci fi movie for the era. It does what a lot of those movies did in the seventies. Starts with an overture over a black screen before starting the scene like 2001 A Space Odyssey and Star Trek The Motion Picture. It has sort of a draw your own conclusion type of ending. Wonder why Disney hasn’t considered rebooting it?

Anyway, I think Disney Plus is pretty decent for the price, but I do think they need to add a last watched feature to the starting page. Some of us don’t sit down and watch things from beginning to end. I tend to treat things i stream like books, I pick it up, watch it for a while, then put it down.

Anyway let’s get to the news…

Star Trek

The original Star Trek Animated Series will be leaving Netflix in December. According to the info page for the show on Netflix it’s quote available until 12/01/2019. This will be the first Star Trek show to no longer be available on Netflix. Most likely CBS will be bringing it to CBS All Access and the show is also available on Amazon Prime.  Star Trek The Animated Series ran for 22 episodes and for many fans acts as Season Four of the original series. It was also the first Trek series to win an emmy, as it received the Emmy for Outstanding Entertainment Children’s Series in 1975.

While we’re on the subject of Trek animated series, it’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything about the new one. Star Trek Lower Decks is due out next year and comic book dot com talked with voice actor Jack Quaid, who will play Ensign Brad Boimler on the show. Quote “We’re in the middle of recording that now. To get to be a part of that world, in any way, is so cool. That show is just, it’s very different from Harvey Girls. It’s way more adult, but it’s so hilarious and surprisingly sweet and very Trek. Fans of Star Trek will get little inferences and things that we sprinkled throughout the show, but also, I think it’s very accessible for people who don’t know a ton of lore as well. It’s just like a fun show in space.” unquote. Harvey Girls Forever was the actors first voice acting role.

Lower Decks is expected to arrive sometime in 2020.

Congratulations are in order to Star Trek Discovery star Anthony Rapp who tweeted the happy news that he is now engaged to fellow actor Kenneth Mitchell, who has portrayed several Klingon characters on the series. Rapp tweeted quote “So something happened tonight,” “I asked Ken if he would marry me and he said yes. I am so very happy and I’m so very thrilled to share this news.” Rapp plays the first openly gay series regular in a Star Trek show.

Congratulations to the happy couple, Discovery returns in 2020 and season two is now out on Bluray and DVD.

Discovery actor  and comedian Tig Notaro recently spoke with Space dot com. About being in sci fi roles in Discovery and the sci fi movie Lucy in the Sky, she said that she didn’t seek out these sci fi roles but felt quote “…open to that world. “It’s very different,” “I like it, I like being a recurring role on “Star Trek” … I’m not looking to become a full cast member but I enjoy the world, and I enjoy the cast and crew, and I think what I have going on is kind of perfect.” unquote She was a fan of the original series as a child saying quote “I did follow ‘Star Trek’ when I was a child, the original series … obviously I’m more familiar with Discovery now, but I love being a part of it, if just simply for the ability to tell people I am on ‘Star Trek,’ it’s really fun to be able to say that.”  unquote

She also told space dot com that she might enjoy playing characters that work in space, she’s not sure that she would want to go to space herself. Saying quote “I think it’s really exciting and terrifying,” “If I could be in space, I would like to just be teleported; I don’t know that I would want that actually takeoff and journey to outer space.”

“I was just talking to my wife about that; she has absolutely no interest in being in outer space. I don’t think were gonna run into ‘should we go, should we not go?'” “I would bring my sons. I really think they would be interested.”

“It’s fun, I’m proud to be a part of it,” “My sons, they think I actually work in space because whenever I go off to Toronto to film ‘Star Trek,’ I always tell them I have to go work on the space rocket “

Would you like a small statue of Captain Spock in your home? Sideshow and Darkside Collectibles Studio are set to release a one to three scale museum statue of Captain Spock as seen in Star Trek II The Wrath of Kahn. The statue is the spitting image of Lenord Nimoy as his iconic character circa 1982.. It’s 25 inches tall in the iconic monster maroon Starfleet uniform. The statue is made in polystone resin with life like skin details and is limited and individually numbered. Orders are being taken now and it will whip in the fourth quarter of  2020. But be prepared to open your wallet wide, it’ll cost you $1299 or $146.13 a month on a payment plan.

Star Wars

Some people took issues with Star Wars The Last Jedi and the amount of diversity in the casting. Because how dare a galaxy far far away has more than one woman and more than one person of color in any kind of prominent role. If this is you, than Rian Johnson has some strong words for you. While speaking at a live event for WIRED while promoting his new movie Knives Out with Chris Evans, he said quote “If someone’s responding to diversity negatively, f— ’em,” Chris  Evans responded to that quote “If anyone didn’t like the movie, I’m not saying that’s why they didn’t like it… It wasn’t surprising at all to me, I grew up as a Star Wars fan. And I grew up- I was in my twenties when the prequels came out and this whole idea that it’s all been sunshine and roses and suddenly everybody’s yelling at each other is baffling to me.” Rian than added quote “And I feel like people care deeply about Star Wars, and every single person has a slightly different version of what they think Star Wars is. And so much of the fun of it is arguing about it. Since we were kids, right? On the playground, you’re yelling at your friends about who would win in a fight… It’s part and parcel about the passion of being a Star Wars fan.”  Unquote Maybe we should take a page from Frozen and Let it Go?

With the Rise of Skywalker on the way, there’s sure to be more trolls bashing Naomi Ackie, who’s in the movie as a character named Jannah. She however did get some advice about it from someone who got bashed alot Kelly Marie tran. Kelly gave the new Star Wars actor some advice. Naomi shared that advice with Metro quote “I think watching the experience of Kelly Marie Tran and talking to her, I got a lot of inspiration from her about how to grow a thicker skin when it comes to people’s opinions of not just your work, [also] who you are,” “There’s a difference. That’s a challenge but I’m fired up. I feel good about it ultimately.”  unquote

The ramp up for The Rise of Skywalker is in high gear. Daisy Ridley talking with Adoro Cinema about a scene that left her and the crew visibly moved. Quote “There was a scene that touched me a lot,” Ridley told Adoro Cinema. “It was our last day shooting in Jordan and the natural light was fading. And it was so exciting. It was just a short scene, we filmed very fast, but the crew was shaken in a way I had not seen before. And I thought, ‘My God, if this is people’s immediate reaction when the scene isn’t even ready, imagine what it will be like to see it in the movies, with the John Williams soundtrack and all that.’” unquote As to what that scene was I guess we’ll have to wait however, you remember the scene from the trailer with her in dark robes and a double bladed red lightsaber, Daisy did discuss that scene saying quote “That scene was filmed in England in November,” “There were huge water cannons and it was really, really cold. Everybody literally soaked. It was hard, but it was also amazing because the scene caught the immediacy of the reaction.” unquote

Carrie Fisher’s death was heartbreaking. But what might be even more heartbreaking was the plan for Leia that was supposed to occur in the Rise of Skywalker. According to Carrie’s brother Todd Fisher, she was to go full Jedi. Todd, speaking with Yahoo Entertainment said quote “She was going to be the big payoff in this final film,”“That’s what the intent was. She was going to be the last Jedi, so to speak… People used to say to me, ‘Why is it that Carrie never gets a lightsaber and chops up some bad guys?’” unquote A final storyline for Leia was created for the final movie in the Skywalker saga using deleted scenes from The Force Awakens. The Rise of Skywalker comes out in a month.

Star Wars Obi Wan Kenobi Writer Hossein Amini thinks that making a series instead of a movie was the right idea. Amini talked with Discussing Film about the upcoming series. Quote “I think because of what we were speaking about before, the situation is so complex both for him personally and in a way, the state of the galaxy, you sort of need time to explore it and to be honest there are loads of other stories within that period as well, it’s quite a few years,” “There is so much going on between [Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope] that hasn’t been explored. The idea of being able to go into a character journey plus the politics and plus all the vastness of the empire and what’s going on is exciting just because it feels like a proper period of history and sometimes that is hard to do in two hours. Sometimes with two-hour movies there is always an imperative for the action and the plot to move particularly fast and quickly and to go from action sequence to action sequence and there are many more aspects to storytelling that I find interesting.” unquote

No word yet on when the series will come to Disney Plus.

Disney CEO Bob Iger on the latest investor earnings call says that a lot of guests are holding off on visiting the Disneyland and Disney World until the Galaxy’s Edge is fully opened. There is one more e-ticket attraction coming to the Star Wars themed attraction, Star Wars Rise of the Resistance. It will open up in December at Disney World and on January seventeenth at DisneyLand. However even with the lower attendance at the parks it’s still been a good year at the Disney Parks. They’ve seen an eight percent increase in revenue.

Speaking of Mr. Iger, on that same call he announced that the Star Wars films will be taking a little break with Iger saying that their current thinking is that Marvel and Star Wars are more than just movie franchises.  Of course, it’s not like they’re gonna stop making content, there are 3 Star Wars series in production.

Even before the launch of Disney Plus, Disney was doing quite well for itself. In its fourth quarter earnings call the studio reported total revenue of 19.1 billion exceeding analysts estimates of 19.04 billion. Toy Story 4 and Aladdin did well for the studio  and even losses on it’s Fox inherited films like Ad Astra, the art of racing in the rain and Dark Phoenix were partially offset by income from tv and streaming. The stock closed up after the launch of Disney Plus. By the way, I must note that I hold a little piece of stock in Disney.

Amazon has given an early renewal for it’s Lord of The Rings series…the show has just begun pre production in New Zeland. Still playing Luigi’s Mansion 3 on the Switch. Still going good, although I’m slowing down.

Can you believe we’re already in the end of November? Just a short hop , skip and a jump to the end of the year. At least we have some new Rick and Morty to watch.

Marvel

Disney Plus’ She-Hulk has found a new writer in Rick and Morty writer Jessica Gao. Jessica won an Emmy for writing the Pickle Rick episode. This is the first development for the show since it was announced at D23. This comes after the news that Jeremy Slater, who developed THe Umbrella Academy for Netflix will be overseeing the Moon Knight series. Could the hiring of Jessica Gao show that She-Hulk will have or of a humorous bent?

Marvel head Kevin Fiege in an interview with Bloomberg news told the outlet that the Disney Plus Loki series will directly tie into doctor Strange and the multiverse of madness. It;s not the only Disney Plus series to tie into the movie as WandaVision will as well. The six episode Loki series won’t be out until 2021.

Marvel studios might be doing well today. But the recession almost killed it before it got started. In order for Marvel Studios to get off the ground, in 2005, MarveI needed a huge loan. It got 525 million from Merrill Lynch. It was good timing, in 2008, the great recession happened and that money would have dried up. Talking with The Hollywood reporter’s Scott Feinberg , Kevni Fiege confirms the fact that Merrill Lynch wouldn’t have been able to provide that funding saying quote “That’s a good question I hadn’t thought about. We wouldn’t have gotten the loan afterwards, you’re probably right,” unquote . why? Simple. Merrill Lynch was a casualty of the recession after losing 51.8 billion in the subprime mortgage catastrophe. The company ended up being sold off to Bank of America.

Now here we are almost a decade and a half later and Marvel has billions of dollars.

Zachary Levi was almost Starlord.James Gunn, the maker of the Gaurdians of the Galaxy movies confirmed the fact during a q and a on instagram stories.  According to Mr. Gunns answer to the question about Zacary Levi being considered, James Gunn wrote quote “Yes. And he was amazing,“”So when Peter Safran, the producer of Shazam, came to me asking about who would be good as the character I strongly suggested Zach. I’ve been told by Peter and the DC folks that’s what got the ball rolling. But I think it was #zacharylevi’s immense talent that did that.”

Levi responded to the post on his Instagram saying quote”And brother, it means the absolute world,” “Thanks for seeing that in me, and sharing that conviction with others. It helped literally change my life. I hope we get to work together at some point soon.” unquote

In another universe, it was so. Anyone up for universe hoping?

California is still suffering from fires if you’ll remember my interview with Orville Producer Tom Costantino, that interview had been delayed from the week before due to a fire that caused his family to be under a voluntary evacuation order. Now Deadline reports that the warner Bros lot had to be evacuated as a precautionary measure after a small brush fire broke out in the hollyWood Hills near the studio.

The Barham fire started near 3694 North Barham Blvd. Which is just about a half mile from the

Warners studio lot, around 152 in the afternoon of  Saturday November 2nd. Luckily by 510 pm that day the Los angeles fire department reported that forward progress had been stopped. By that point the fire had burned 34 acres in the hills between Burbank and Universal City.

Speaking of Warner Bros, the studio has announced that it’s updating its logo. The logo is a now elongated blue shield with the letters WB on it.  It harkens back to how the logo looked in the 1930’s. The new logo will begin appearing on the companies productions starting in early 2020. If you’d like to look at all the different variations on the wb logo I’ll have a link to a site that has a detailed history of the different permutations of the iconic logo.http://annyas.com/screenshots/warner-bros-logo/

We got some Batman casting news. First off The Batman director Matt Reeves confirmed on twitter that Andy Serkis will play the role of Alfred Pennyworth. He joins Robbert Pattinson has Batman, Jeffery Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, newcomer Jayme Lawson will be playing a new character named Bella who is a grassroots political candidate running for office …or is that a ruse and  she’s playing Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl and Paul Dano from There Will be Blood has been cast as Edward Nashton aka The Riddler

It looks like it’s truly the end of the line for Batman’s father figure slash butler. Alfred Pennyworth. DC has confirmed that he was indeed killed by Bane. His death will be explored in Batman: Pennyworth R.I.P. a new one shot by James Tynion the fourth and Peter J Tomasi with art by Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira. Here’ s the description quote “Alfred Pennyworth served the Wayne family for decades—even through the terrible loss of the Dark Knight’s parents. His shocking death at the hands of Bane is the only event that could possibly compare to that fateful night in Crime Alley, and it leaves Bruce at a similar crossroads. If Alfred was the glue that held the Bat-Family together, how will Batman deal with that all falling apart? And if the Caped Crusader is to be truly alone, he might either hang that cape up once and for all…or double down and carry on with this vengeful quest forever.

Batman: Pennyworth R.I.P. celebrates the life of one of the most important people in the history of Gotham City, while also addressing questions about what’s next.” The issue comes out on February 12th, 2020.

So you’re watching Disney Plus and your bring up the Simpsons and are dismayed that they’re being presented not in their original aspect ratio of 4:3 but in the zoomed in 16:9 ratio. Well you’re cries of anguish has been heard. Disney in a statement said quote “We presented “The Simpsons” in 16:9 aspect ratio at launch in order to guarantee visual quality and consistency across all 30 seasons. Over time, Disney+ will roll out new features and additional viewing options. As part of this, in early 2020, Disney+ will make the first 19 seasons (and some episodes from Season 20) of “The Simpsons” available in their original 4:3 aspect ratio, giving subscribers a choice of how they prefer to view the popular series.” unquote During season 20 was when the show went to the 16:9 aspect ratio of today.

We talked a few minutes ago about how Warner Bros has looked to the past to update their logo. Now Deadline reports that Warners is bringing back Rin Tin Tin, the German Shepard that was credited with saving the studio in the 1920’s.

Matt Lieberman, who wrote the upcoming animated movie Scoob and the animated Addams Family movie will be writing the new movie. The movie will be made with Andrew Lazar’s Mad Chance productions along with rights holders Sasha Jenson and Jeff Miller. Apparently the plan is to make the dog the John Wick of dogs. A hero elite military dog on a covert mission to stop a large scale attack. So if John Wick saw the dog got killed, Does Rin Tin Tins humans get killed?

HOcus Pocus 2…is probably something we don’t need. However since it’s gonna get made let’s check in on where it is. The Hollywood Reporter asked Sarah Jessica Parker about it. Asking if she knows anything, she said quote No, I don’t know. There has never been a conversation ever in our lives. Someone just asked me on Instagram, and I said: “We all said we’d love to someday.” But that’s the extent of the conversation. I’ve been asked so much recently about this — it’s a seasonal question… it’s appropriate! Unquote The reporter than added an addendum to the answer in the article quote [When asked, “Any chance of a sequel?” last week on Instagram, Parker responded: “We have all said yes. Now we wait.”] unquote
