Tonight! Liam Neeson is done with Star Wars and Batman, we learn more about Picard’s hired assassin and Chris Evans wants to cause someone pain! All that and more on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to Episode 64 of Multiverse tonight.

So we’re at the halfway point on Star Trek Picard, what have you thought of it so far? I’ve enjoyed it so far but, last week’s episode was kinda dark. You had the deaths of a recurring Voyager character and a Next Gen guest star. I wonder when we run across Riker and Deanna Riker? I was kind of expecting that they’d show up during Jonathan Frakes run of directing episodes, but so far nothing. I’m also curious as to what will be the follow up show after this season is done. I’m hoping for Lower Decks. I think that would be a good palate cleanser, something lite and funny.

A little Orville news to report. Producer Tom Costantino showed an all new much larger orchestra recording a new arrangement of the theme song. I can’t wait to hear it.

Star Wars

Han Solo died in The Force Awakens only to reappear as a force ghost in The Rise of Skywalker, so I guess the question is why? Harrison Ford, talking with Jimmy Kimmel on Jimmy Kimmel Live. As to Han’s death he said quote “I figured that his utility had been exhausted, bled out, and was … well, I was willing to die for the cause. Bring some gravitas,” unquote. As far as Han’s appearance in the rise of Skywalker quote “No good deed goes unpunished.””J.J. said, ‘This is a good idea. I, J.J., have decided that this is a good idea and I would like you to do it,” unquote When Kimmel pushed if he trusted JJ Abrams Ford quipped quote “Don’t you?” unquote

By the way, don’t ask Harrison about details. When a reporter for USA Today asked if his return in The Rise of Skywalker was because he was a force ghost or just a figment of Ben Solo’s imagination the actor replied quote “A Force ghost? I don’t know what a Force ghost is,”

“Don’t tell anyone,” “I’m not talking loud enough for your recorder. I have no (expletive) idea what a Force ghost is. And I don’t care!” unquote. Keep in mind he only works in outer space…

The Mandalorian will have someone new to play with in season 2, According to the Mat Men Wrestling Podcast, WWE Superstar Sasha Banks will be appearing in the show.  Could she be in charge of something? After all her wrestling nickname is The Boss.

Disney Plus will soon be coming to the rest of the world, but even though The Mandalorian season one is all out in the US, doesn’t mean that everyone else won’t have to wait as well.

Disney Plus’ UK twitter account has released the news that , like the US release, each episode will be doled out one at a time. Disney Plus and The Mandalorian will debut in the UK on March twenty fourth.

Liam Neeson is out of the Star Wars and Batman phase of his career. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight the actor who has been QuiGon Jinn and Ra’s Al Ghul says he has no interest in returning to either. Quote “I’ll be honest with you, no. It’s not. I’m really not a huge fan of the genre. I think it’s Hollywood with all the bells and whistles and the technical achievements and stuff — which I admire — but I have no desire to go into the gym for three hours every day to pump myself up to squeeze into a Velcro suit with a cape,” “I admire the actors and I know some of the actors who do it — and do it fantastically. It’s just not my genre, it really isn’t. The first Star Wars, I was in that, that was 22 years ago, and I enjoyed that, because it was novel and that was new. I was acting to tennis balls, which were ultimately going to be little fuzzy furry creatures and stuff. That was interesting, acting-wise, to try and make that seem real, but that was the last. It’s quite exhausting.” unquote Kinda sounds like he just doesn’t wanna go back to the gym again.

The Fett Man is back. Boba Fett is back in Star Wars Bounty Hunters number one.  The new comic from Marvel Comics from writer Ethan sacks and artist Paolo Villanelli. Here’s the blurb quote NEVER BETRAY A BOUNTY HUNTER – ESPECIALLY IF IT’S BOBA FETT! Years ago, VALANCE and fellow bounty hunters BOSSK and BOBA FETT took on a mission that went sideways in a bad way after Valance’s mentor, NAKANO LASH, violently betrayed them. Valance’s team barely escaped with their lives. He never thought he’d face his old mentor ever again…until Lash finally resurfaces under mysterious circumstances. Every bounty hunter in the galaxy wants a piece and Valance is hell-bent on getting to the prize first. He has a score to settle—but so does Boba Fett!

ETHAN SACKS (OLD MAN HAWKEYE and GALAXY’S EDGE) and PAOLO VILLANELLI (VADER: DARK VISIONS and JEDI FALLEN ORDER – DARK TEMPLE) are teaming up to bring you the bounty hunter adventure you’ve been waiting for this March! Star Wars Bounty Hunters number one is due out March fourth.

So you love the Mandalorian and the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs, what do you do? Get a tattoo celebrating both of course. A fan decided to get inked following the win. The tattoo features Coach Andy Reid in the Mandalorian armor and MVP Patrick Mahomes as the Child. https://twitter.com/thecheckdown/status/1229842434172964864/photo/1

Me personally I’d never get a tatoo but to each thier own.

Star Trek

Democratic Presidential Candidate Pete Buttigieg is a confirmed trekkie. Speaking with Fox News the candidate spoke of his love of Star Trek Picard. “I finally figured out how to do the app so that I can watch Star Trek: Picard,” Buttigieg revealed on Fox News. “I’m a huge Star Trek fan so I’m really excited to see where it goes. I grew up on The Next Generation. I was all about that.” https://twitter.com/i/status/1230120511348322307

And I’m all about free and fair elections. So get out there and vote!

The newest recruit on Star Trek Picard’s mission is the Romulan sword fighter Elnor played by Evan Evagora. The Australian actor, who is also in the new Fantasy Island movie, spoke with comic book dot com about finding Elnor’s character and his relationship with Jean-Luc Picard. On how much he had to train to be good with those swords he said quote I have no background in sword fight training whatsoever. I do have a very heavy boxing background, which can be used during fight scenes and stuff. It was pretty much the day I landed in LA, I got a phone call asking me if I could come down to the studio. So I came down to the studio. I met the stunt team. I met my amazing stunt double. Anytime you see Elnor running along walls, or running up and then flipping off stuff, that’s him. He can just do it way better than I can, and he makes me look amazing.

In terms of the sword fighting, I went to the studio and I was given my prop sword, and we began going through sword fighting sequences and scenes from the show to start practicing. So the majority of the stuff that you see, I’m doing, in terms of fighting and swordplay. Unquote  On if he considers Elnor to be an outsider type character like Spock or Data, he told them quote Yeah, I’d say he does. Every version of Star Trek has that character who’s trying to understand the world and is looking at everything with a fresh face. And I think Elnor continues that. Unquote

As to what will be coming up for Elnor in the rest of the season, Evan was evasive, but he did tell them quote I don’t really want to give much away, but I will say there’s some nice moments between Seven of Nine and Elnor. I don’t really want to give too much away, because it would just spoil the story, and there’s some really great moments. But that really sticks out in my memory. I have some really good scenes with Michelle Hurd, as well as Patrick. Really it’s been a great ensemble cast, and I think we all work well off of each other. And I think you’ll see how all of our stories interconnect and intertwine, and how we each deal with the similar trauma we’ve experienced, but how it’s affected each one differently. Unquote

Picard showrunner Michael Chabon is busy answering fans’ questions. One response he had was to why all the swearing? His answer quote “Listen. No human society will be perfect, because no human will ever be perfect,” Chabon says. “The most we can do — and as Star Trek ever reminds us, must do — is aspire to perfection, and work to make it so. Norkon forden perfectunun, as a wise Yang once said. Until that impossible day, s–t is going to continue to happen. And when it does, humans are going to want to swear.

“The absence of swear words in Star Trek was never a matter of Federation principle, it was a matter of FCC rules. Writers of previous eras had no choice. They were censored. Searing is one of humanity’s most ancient, sensible, and reliable consolations. Personally I would consider any society that discouraged, banned or abandoned the use of curse words to be a f—ing dystopia.” unquote  In other words, the swear words were always there, they just couldn’t get passed the censors. I think it’s okay, but they should make a censored version for family viewing.

And what’s up what Commodore Oh and the sunglasses, when a true Vulcan have second eyelids that would handle the bright sun?  His response was that he’s well aware that a Vulcan wouldn’t need sunglasses and suggested that its a hint. What does this accoutrement tell us about Commodore Oh. HINT HINT. Let’s just put it this way, if something seems off, maybe you should log that away for later in the story.

Is Rebecca Romijn’s Number One coming back for an encore? The actress in a recent interview where she was launching her own line of jewelry spoke to fashion site The Daily Front Row. Told them quote “I’ve also been working on Star Trek here and there, but I can’t really talk about that,” unquote She can’t talk about it? Isn’t all her Star Trek stuff out? Or is there something that hasn’t been released. Are we making too much about her choice of words?  Probably. If anything does develop, I’ll let you know.

Jeri Ryan’s seven of nine finally appeared in the fourth episode of Picard. However it wasn’t easy for Jeri to find Seven’s voice again. The Hollywood reporter spoke with the actress before the season began. When asked about what the biggest change she had experienced with the new show she said quote “The scale of the show. The scale of these sets, the costumes, it’s crazy. It’s like you’re doing a feature film every week.unquote She was also surprised by the technical set design quote

“In one of my scenes, where I had to go in and work a console, we go in for the first rehearsal and I had to touch buttons and the screen actually does something! And I totally flipped out, like: ‘Oh my god, actually having buttons that work!” unquote

She also talked about her first day working with Sir Patrick Stewart on the set quote “My first scene, the big scene, was the one you see in the trailer, when we’re in his office/ready room. That was my first day on set. It was daunting — not just because it was Patrick — but because I was still petrified — or ‘Patrick-fied’ — of if I could find the character again. I was still trying to figure out who she was.” unquote. However she did have backup in finding her character thanks to Jonathan Frakes quote “I was so fortunate because Jonathan Frakes was directing my first episode. So with that, I knew I was in good hands. [Frakes], more than anyone else, would get the importance of revisiting and being true to these characters. Because the challenge for me is: Where has she been for nearly 20 years? Finding her voice was the hardest thing for me; when I read the first script — I just couldn’t hear her voice anywhere.”

Ryan went on to recall that it took her the first couple of takes before she felt like she “found Seven,” but once she did, “Frakes just sort of walked in and said ‘there she is.’” unquote

Her return was excellent and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. This is good.

Well here’s a pleasant surprise. Rick Moranis is returning to acting after a 23 year hiatus to raise his children after the death of his wife. He will be back in a new sequel to Honey I shrunk the kids titled Shrunk. The new movie will star Josh Gad as Rick Moranis son Wayne Szalinkski and be directed by Joe Johnston who also directed the original movie back in 1989. Rick has not appeared in a live action film since 1994’s Little Giants.

The prequel series to The CW’s The 100 has started casting. According to Deadline, Iola Evans from Amazon’s Carnival Row, Adain Bradley from the CW’s Riverdale and Leo Howard of Why Women Kill have been cast in a backdoor pilot for the yet to be titled prequel. The backdoor pilot episode will air sometime during the seventh and final season of the show.

The Stargate franchise has been quiet since 2011. MGM tried to gauge interest in a new series a couple of years ago with a prequel webseries, but it apparently didn’t do enough to convince the studio to go ahead with anything new.. Comic Book dot com checked in with creator Roland Emmerich to see where things are with anything new. Emmerich said quote”Yeah, I kind of talked a little bit with MGM about Stargate,” Emmerich said in an interview. “But I think this is going nowhere because there was another TV show, and they kind of realized that if it’s like some sort of a mixed bag.” unquote   It seems to me that if Stargate fans want to see a new series, they’d better show up or it’ll be a long time before anything new is seen.

The fifth Indiana Jones movie will start filming in just a few months according to Harrison Ford. The actor, in an interview with Ellen said that it would start sometime this summer or late summer. Seemingly implying that it would be around July or August. The movie was originally scheduled to be out this May but has been pushed back all the way to July tenth of next year. Let’s just hope it’s better than the Crystal Skull.

Goonies never say die. Well it looks like Fox Television has begun development on a sorn of Goonies reboot. The show is about a troubled teacher who attempts to make a shot for shot remake of the cult film with three students. Here’s the description quote “After failing to make it in New York and carrying a heavy secret with her, Stella Cooper returns to her distressed automotive hometown to substitute teach. She finds inspiration, hope and ultimately salvation when she agrees to help three students who are pursuing their filmmaking dreams by putting on an impossibly ambitious shot-for-shot remake of one of their favorite movies — The Goonies. Over the course of the season of the potential series, their passion will inspire a town in desperate need of hope in this love letter to the power of cinema, storytelling and dreams.” unquote Don’t hold your breath though, This project is untitled and just in the project stage.

HBO’s  sci fi comedy Avenue 5 has been renewed for season two. The show starring Josh Gad and Hugh Laurie trapped on a space liner with horrible people seems to have gotten over with a lot of people. I’ve been enjoying it.

The Hollywood reporter has broken the news that Chris evans is currently in negotiatons to play dentist Orin Scrivello in Greg Berlanti’s reboot of Little Shop of Horors. Warner Bros is making the movie and other possible actors up for roles include Scarlett Johansson and taron Egerton. No possible release date is known.

This story is both sad and a little strange,  Veteran stuntwoman Cheryl Sanders who has performed in Back to the Future Part II, VI Warshawski, The Thomas Crown Affair and the Lethal Weapon series was killed in a shootout outside a million dollar home in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Fox 6 News in Ohio reports that Cheryl Sande and her husband were shot and killed after they allegedly threatened her ex husband Robert Duncan and his wife in their driveway.Officers responded to the shooting on February thirteenth in Miami Township Ohio and found the couple dead outside her ex’s house. Sanders and her husband don’t live in Ohio, they live in North Carolina according to the county attorney.

Sanders ex told the police that Cheryl pulled up in a car, got out and went towards Duncan’s wife Molly. According to Sheriff Gene Fisher, Cheryl Sanders was quote “threatening to kill the guy’s wife and (Robert Duncan) fired upon that person,” Both Robert and Cheryl Sanders died from multiple gunshots. Apparently this was not the first time Cherl Sanders had attempted this. Apparently this had been a long planned murder attempt as there was a survailance camera  put on the the house that broadcast to a cellphone found in the couples car and Robert Sanders had multiple form of id on him.

The investigation is still continuing.

Tonight! Birds of Prey disappoints, Bob Iger thinks he’s owed a beer and Kevin Smith masters an all star cast of the Universe, all that and more on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Greetings and welcome to episode 65 of Multiverse Tonight! Well. What do you know. I know one thing. Rumors are just that rumors. I’ve been seeing rumors online that Dan Didio’s exit from DC Comics is some sort of precurreser to AT&T selling off DC Comics or stopping production of comics, ecetera. You need to look at this with a critical eye. One. no reliable sources. The site that has this story doesn’t name where this info is coming from. 2. No cooberation. No other site is reporting this news. If something like that was happening other news sites and more repetable sites would have the story. In other words, don’t believe it until it happens or it gets better coverage.

DC

Patty Jenkins thinks of Steve Trevor like an Indiana Jones type of character in Wonder Woman 1984.quote  “He’s not beta at all. He’s a super alpha who can absolutely wear his discomfort on his sleeve,”. “So, from day one, I was always saying that it should almost be like Wonder Woman meets Indiana Jones, where Indiana would never be emasculated. Chris just very naturally has that quality. You can tell by meeting him that he’s warm and he’s chill and he truly appreciates women.”  unquote

So what does Pine think of his character’s journey in the movie Speaking with Entertainment Weekly he said quote “In the first movie, I played the world-weary soldier who has seen all the depravity that humankind is capable of displaying,” “And in this one I get to be much more wide-eyed and joyful. My role is really just as a friend, lover, boyfriend-cum-bodyguard who’s trying his best to help Diana on her mission. I’m like the Watson to her Holmes.” unquote

Entertainment Weekly also spoke with Kristen Wiig about her transformation into the role of Cheetah quote “I did not really know so much about Cheetah,” “Before I even talked to Patty [Jenkins], there was an idea that maybe it might be about being a villain for the movie, so I went online and looked at all the villains of Wonder Woman to try to figure out which one, because I was so excited. And I was really, really happy to find out it was her.” “I’ve never really played someone who walks into the room and owns it — especially when she starts out so insecure and self-deprecating,” Wiig said. “We didn’t want to see Barbara in Cheetah, and I didn’t want to see Kristen in Cheetah, either.” unquote Wonder Woman 1984 opens on June fifth.

Birds of Prey had a disappointing first weekend, so what did Warner Bros do? Retitled the film, Worked for Edge of Tomorrow didn’t it.? Birds of Prey And the Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is now Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey. not a bad idea. Speaking to the Verge, a representative for the studio said that the title change was to help search expansion for ticket sites. Which sounds a lot like people weren’t searching for Birds of Prey, they were searching for Harley Quinn. I wonder if you call a movie Birds of Prey, maybe push the Birds of Prey and not Harley Quinn? I mean if Harley is the entire plot of the movie, call it Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey.

The good news is the film has made back it’s money. Let’s see how it did in the box office report

BOX OFFICE REPORT

DC Universe’s Doom Patrol will be getting a little larger next season. Actress Abigail Shapiro is joining up as The Chief Niles Caulder’s daughter Dorthy and NCIS New Orleans’ Karen Obilom is coming as Roni Evers, a military vet with a mysterious past who meets Cyborg Vic Stone in a PTSD support group.

Longtime Co-Publisher of DC Comics Dan DiDio is out at DC Comics.  Dan is best known for Infinite Crisis, The new 52, DC Rebirth and Doomsday Clock. Dan has been co-publisher for the past10 years. This seems to leave Co-Publisher Jim Lee in the driverseat as sole publisher and Chief Creative Officer. DiDio’s exit comes just prior to an announced new relaunch that would further dismantle  parts of the 2011 reboot. It is unclear at this time if that relaunch will be delayed or canceled.

The Supergirl comic will end with issue number forty two in May. The issue will be written by Jody Houser with art by Rachel Stott and will pit Supergirl against the US Military. There are currently no plans for a new series.

Some early images of Robert Pattinson’s Batsuit have come out, but meanwhile those faithful who still want the Snyder cut have launched a renewed campaign for the Holy Grail of the Snyder Cut of Justice League. The social media profiles for WarnerMedia owned companies are getting comment bombed. For example, the HBO Max instagram page has hundreds if not thousands of demands that HBO Max stream the cut of the movie.  By the way, there is still no verification if such a cut ACTUALLY exists. So they might just be yelling into the void.

Lucifer’s fifth season has been scheduled as it’s last but could it get a sixth? According to TVLine dot com, Netflix is currently in talks with Warner Bros Television to make a new final season. Season five is currently in its final weeks of production on it’s final sixteen episodes. Neither Netflix nor Warner Bros has acknowledged or denied the report.

Marvel

Avengers Endgame not winning an Oscar was kind of a disappointment. Well it’s not winning that makes history or infamy take your pick. Avengers Endgames shut out at the Oscars marks the first time that a film has become the highest grossing movie of all time but didn’t win an oscar. Endgame made nearly 2.8 billion dollars worldwide .

The United Kingdom has some new heroes. Marvel is introducing a brand new team called The Union in the Empyre crossover event with the Fantastic Four and the Avengers. The tagline for the event is quote Thanos is dead-so who is the biggest power in the Universe? Unquote  The Union is written by Paul Grist and has art by Andrea Di Vito and cis out now.

Michael Pena is unsure about  the fate of his Marvel Antman sidekick character Luis. The Hollywood reporter talked with Pena on the press junket for his new movie Fantasy Island and they asked if he ever found out, he said quote “I have no idea. Ant-Man 3 is not going to be shot for another year or so. After my involvement in the first two Ant-Man movies, we really won’t even know what’s going to happen until one to two months before we film,” explained Peña. “I have no idea what’s happening to be honest. Right now, Marvel is in a really cool position where they can break hearts by who they bring back and who they don’t. But, I’m still interested even though I have no idea what’s gonna happen, and I can’t wait to find out.” unquote However he is hopeful that he will be returning to the MCU Speaking with coming soon dot com he said quote  “For the last one, I didn’t really know what capacity I was going to come back in or if I was going to come back,” Peña previously said to ComingSoon. “I think they’re a year away from filming, I think it would be great if I could do a third one. But you never know, especially with all the stuff that happened in Endgame. Right now, Marvel’s in a situation where they can crush some expectations, they’re gonna have to crush some expectations of other characters, not just mine, so hopefully I make the cut.” unquote

Well I think it would be tragic to do a third ant man film and not have the series hype man. He’s one of a kind.

So last summer, the big story was the Spider-man fight followed by the ambassadorial effort of  Spider-man tom Holland that resulted in a peace treaty between Sony and Disney. Now Disney CEO Bob Iger thinks Tom Holland owes him a little something cool and refreshing. Mister Iger wrote on Twitter quote “Last night’s premiere of @Pixar latest film, #Onward, gave me a chance to see @MarvelStudios friends–#ChrisPratt and #TomHolland! Tom owes me a “pint” for saving @SpiderMan!”

Unquote Actually that’s not a bad idea. Maybe they should invite Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra and make it a beer summit, maybe iron some more of these Marvel rights out. Make it a huge shared universe? Whata say?

So have you ever watched the Marvel movies and that quick succession of comic book pages and wondered about the kissing couple that can be seen around the 6 second mark in the sequence? Well a fan on Quora has figured out who they are. Deverick Jenkins has figured out that they are Angelica Jones aka Firestar and Vance Astrovik aka Justice. You know what’s interesting about those two, They are mutants. Technically making them the first Mutants in a Marvel Studios film. Kinda neat. Now if Marvel Studios would just get down to using those mutants…

According to a new report from Illuminerdi, Sony is interested in Michelle MacLaren to direct the Spider-man movie. MacLaren is best known for working on shows like Game of Thrones, Better call Saul and Breaking Bad and if chosen this would be her first feature film. The same report also says that they are looking into Alicia Vikander for the lead role of Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman. When more is announced, I’ll let you know.

Well Avengers Endgame might have not gotten an Oscars, but they’re bound to get a blimp from the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. Endgame walked out with eleven nominations. Also up for awards are A Series of unfortunate Events, Power ranger Beast Morphers, Stranger Things, The Flash, The Simpsons, Captain Marvel, Spider-man Far From HOme, Star Wars the Rise of SkywalkerFrozen 2, the Lego Movie 2, The Lion King, Secret Life of Pets 2, Toy Story 4 and many many more. The awards will be slimed out on March 22nd on Nickelodeon.

Kevin told Newsarama that the only note he got from Netflix was to treat it seriously, quote like Shakespeare. So he tasked his writer’s room quote “We went in with this mantra of, like, nobody is winking and nobody’s acting like this is weirdness,” Smith said. “ManAtArms, Stinkor, or no, it’s all played incredibly Game of Thrones-straight.” “If you like the style of Castlevania, just put HeMan through that filter, and it has that feel and look to it,” “It’s anime style.”

No released date for Masters of the Universe Revelation won’t air until 2021.

If the report from DisInsider is true, Disney is working on another live action version of another animated movie. This time it will be Rupunzel, which was animated in the Tangled movie a decade ago. Michael De Luca and Kristen Burr are reportedly executive producing it with Zoe Kent, Jessica Virtue and Lucy Kitada. No director has been announced.

According to Variety, Disney is working on a sequel to it’s live action Aladdin movie. The sequel is expected to be a theatrical release like the first one and will be a completely new idea and not based on the direct to video animated sequels The return of Jafar and Aladdin and the king of thieves. Right now it’s unclear if Guy Ritchie will return to direct but the films starts are all expected to return, but nothing is in place yet.  Comic book dot com can confirm that John Gatis and Andre Berloff will be writing the script.

Todd McFarlane has announced a Kickstarter campaign at the 2020 Toy Fair. This Kickstarter will recreate the original line of Spawn toys that were made with the Todd toys logo, all released with classic packaging but with the modern sensibilities and techniques that mcFarlane toys have become known for. Todd McFarlane said quote I’m going to start with him (points to original Spawn) and hopefully we’ll end up getting to all six of these, but we’re going to take that original Spawn and we’re going to do it and put it into a retro packaging, but we’re going to use a modern-day sculpt of it.” The Kickstarter isn’t live yet, but will be under the Masterworks category on Kickstarter. I like a good Kickstarter, I give to the Rifftrax kickstarter every year.

Show Notes: Episode 50:Deal with Star Wars Diversity and Episode 51: Warner Bros. goes Blue

Tonight! A Discovery star gets engaged, Rian Johnson has words for diversity haters,  and Disney Plus is doing just fine on this fiftieth edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to the scifi edition of Multiverse Tonight.

Episode fifty, pretty snazzy. I thank all of you watching and listening.

So, have you started watching Disney Plus? What was the first thing you started watching? Probably the Mandalorian. Not me. I watched The Black Hole. Pretty decent sci fi movie for the era. It does what a lot of those movies did in the seventies. Starts with an overture over a black screen before starting the scene like 2001 A Space Odyssey and Star Trek The Motion Picture. It has sort of a draw your own conclusion type of ending. Wonder why Disney hasn’t considered rebooting it?

Anyway, I think Disney Plus is pretty decent for the price, but I do think they need to add a last watched feature to the starting page. Some of us don’t sit down and watch things from beginning to end. I tend to treat things i stream like books, I pick it up, watch it for a while, then put it down.

Anyway let’s get to the news…

Star Trek

The original Star Trek Animated Series will be leaving Netflix in December. According to the info page for the show on Netflix it’s quote available until 12/01/2019. This will be the first Star Trek show to no longer be available on Netflix. Most likely CBS will be bringing it to CBS All Access and the show is also available on Amazon Prime.  Star Trek The Animated Series ran for 22 episodes and for many fans acts as Season Four of the original series. It was also the first Trek series to win an emmy, as it received the Emmy for Outstanding Entertainment Children’s Series in 1975.

While we’re on the subject of Trek animated series, it’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything about the new one. Star Trek Lower Decks is due out next year and comic book dot com talked with voice actor Jack Quaid, who will play Ensign Brad Boimler on the show. Quote “We’re in the middle of recording that now. To get to be a part of that world, in any way, is so cool. That show is just, it’s very different from Harvey Girls. It’s way more adult, but it’s so hilarious and surprisingly sweet and very Trek. Fans of Star Trek will get little inferences and things that we sprinkled throughout the show, but also, I think it’s very accessible for people who don’t know a ton of lore as well. It’s just like a fun show in space.” unquote. Harvey Girls Forever was the actors first voice acting role.

Lower Decks is expected to arrive sometime in 2020.

Congratulations are in order to Star Trek Discovery star Anthony Rapp who tweeted the happy news that he is now engaged to fellow actor Kenneth Mitchell, who has portrayed several Klingon characters on the series. Rapp tweeted quote “So something happened tonight,” “I asked Ken if he would marry me and he said yes. I am so very happy and I’m so very thrilled to share this news.” Rapp plays the first openly gay series regular in a Star Trek show.

Congratulations to the happy couple, Discovery returns in 2020 and season two is now out on Bluray and DVD.

Discovery actor  and comedian Tig Notaro recently spoke with Space dot com. About being in sci fi roles in Discovery and the sci fi movie Lucy in the Sky, she said that she didn’t seek out these sci fi roles but felt quote “…open to that world. “It’s very different,” “I like it, I like being a recurring role on “Star Trek” … I’m not looking to become a full cast member but I enjoy the world, and I enjoy the cast and crew, and I think what I have going on is kind of perfect.” unquote She was a fan of the original series as a child saying quote “I did follow ‘Star Trek’ when I was a child, the original series … obviously I’m more familiar with Discovery now, but I love being a part of it, if just simply for the ability to tell people I am on ‘Star Trek,’ it’s really fun to be able to say that.”  unquote

She also told space dot com that she might enjoy playing characters that work in space, she’s not sure that she would want to go to space herself. Saying quote “I think it’s really exciting and terrifying,” “If I could be in space, I would like to just be teleported; I don’t know that I would want that actually takeoff and journey to outer space.”

“I was just talking to my wife about that; she has absolutely no interest in being in outer space. I don’t think were gonna run into ‘should we go, should we not go?'” “I would bring my sons. I really think they would be interested.”

“It’s fun, I’m proud to be a part of it,” “My sons, they think I actually work in space because whenever I go off to Toronto to film ‘Star Trek,’ I always tell them I have to go work on the space rocket “

Would you like a small statue of Captain Spock in your home? Sideshow and Darkside Collectibles Studio are set to release a one to three scale museum statue of Captain Spock as seen in Star Trek II The Wrath of Kahn. The statue is the spitting image of Lenord Nimoy as his iconic character circa 1982.. It’s 25 inches tall in the iconic monster maroon Starfleet uniform. The statue is made in polystone resin with life like skin details and is limited and individually numbered. Orders are being taken now and it will whip in the fourth quarter of  2020. But be prepared to open your wallet wide, it’ll cost you $1299 or $146.13 a month on a payment plan.

Star Wars

Some people took issues with Star Wars The Last Jedi and the amount of diversity in the casting. Because how dare a galaxy far far away has more than one woman and more than one person of color in any kind of prominent role. If this is you, than Rian Johnson has some strong words for you. While speaking at a live event for WIRED while promoting his new movie Knives Out with Chris Evans, he said quote “If someone’s responding to diversity negatively, f— ’em,” Chris  Evans responded to that quote “If anyone didn’t like the movie, I’m not saying that’s why they didn’t like it… It wasn’t surprising at all to me, I grew up as a Star Wars fan. And I grew up- I was in my twenties when the prequels came out and this whole idea that it’s all been sunshine and roses and suddenly everybody’s yelling at each other is baffling to me.” Rian than added quote “And I feel like people care deeply about Star Wars, and every single person has a slightly different version of what they think Star Wars is. And so much of the fun of it is arguing about it. Since we were kids, right? On the playground, you’re yelling at your friends about who would win in a fight… It’s part and parcel about the passion of being a Star Wars fan.”  Unquote Maybe we should take a page from Frozen and Let it Go?

With the Rise of Skywalker on the way, there’s sure to be more trolls bashing Naomi Ackie, who’s in the movie as a character named Jannah. She however did get some advice about it from someone who got bashed alot Kelly Marie tran. Kelly gave the new Star Wars actor some advice. Naomi shared that advice with Metro quote “I think watching the experience of Kelly Marie Tran and talking to her, I got a lot of inspiration from her about how to grow a thicker skin when it comes to people’s opinions of not just your work, [also] who you are,” “There’s a difference. That’s a challenge but I’m fired up. I feel good about it ultimately.”  unquote

The ramp up for The Rise of Skywalker is in high gear. Daisy Ridley talking with Adoro Cinema about a scene that left her and the crew visibly moved. Quote “There was a scene that touched me a lot,” Ridley told Adoro Cinema. “It was our last day shooting in Jordan and the natural light was fading. And it was so exciting. It was just a short scene, we filmed very fast, but the crew was shaken in a way I had not seen before. And I thought, ‘My God, if this is people’s immediate reaction when the scene isn’t even ready, imagine what it will be like to see it in the movies, with the John Williams soundtrack and all that.’” unquote As to what that scene was I guess we’ll have to wait however, you remember the scene from the trailer with her in dark robes and a double bladed red lightsaber, Daisy did discuss that scene saying quote “That scene was filmed in England in November,” “There were huge water cannons and it was really, really cold. Everybody literally soaked. It was hard, but it was also amazing because the scene caught the immediacy of the reaction.” unquote

Carrie Fisher’s death was heartbreaking. But what might be even more heartbreaking was the plan for Leia that was supposed to occur in the Rise of Skywalker. According to Carrie’s brother Todd Fisher, she was to go full Jedi. Todd, speaking with Yahoo Entertainment said quote “She was going to be the big payoff in this final film,”“That’s what the intent was. She was going to be the last Jedi, so to speak… People used to say to me, ‘Why is it that Carrie never gets a lightsaber and chops up some bad guys?’” unquote A final storyline for Leia was created for the final movie in the Skywalker saga using deleted scenes from The Force Awakens. The Rise of Skywalker comes out in a month.

Star Wars Obi Wan Kenobi Writer Hossein Amini thinks that making a series instead of a movie was the right idea. Amini talked with Discussing Film about the upcoming series. Quote “I think because of what we were speaking about before, the situation is so complex both for him personally and in a way, the state of the galaxy, you sort of need time to explore it and to be honest there are loads of other stories within that period as well, it’s quite a few years,” “There is so much going on between [Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope] that hasn’t been explored. The idea of being able to go into a character journey plus the politics and plus all the vastness of the empire and what’s going on is exciting just because it feels like a proper period of history and sometimes that is hard to do in two hours. Sometimes with two-hour movies there is always an imperative for the action and the plot to move particularly fast and quickly and to go from action sequence to action sequence and there are many more aspects to storytelling that I find interesting.” unquote

No word yet on when the series will come to Disney Plus.

Disney CEO Bob Iger on the latest investor earnings call says that a lot of guests are holding off on visiting the Disneyland and Disney World until the Galaxy’s Edge is fully opened. There is one more e-ticket attraction coming to the Star Wars themed attraction, Star Wars Rise of the Resistance. It will open up in December at Disney World and on January seventeenth at DisneyLand. However even with the lower attendance at the parks it’s still been a good year at the Disney Parks. They’ve seen an eight percent increase in revenue.

Speaking of Mr. Iger, on that same call he announced that the Star Wars films will be taking a little break with Iger saying that their current thinking is that Marvel and Star Wars are more than just movie franchises.  Of course, it’s not like they’re gonna stop making content, there are 3 Star Wars series in production.

Even before the launch of Disney Plus, Disney was doing quite well for itself. In its fourth quarter earnings call the studio reported total revenue of 19.1 billion exceeding analysts estimates of 19.04 billion. Toy Story 4 and Aladdin did well for the studio  and even losses on it’s Fox inherited films like Ad Astra, the art of racing in the rain and Dark Phoenix were partially offset by income from tv and streaming. The stock closed up after the launch of Disney Plus. By the way, I must note that I hold a little piece of stock in Disney.

Amazon has given an early renewal for it’s Lord of The Rings series…the show has just begun pre production in New Zeland. The head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Salke has confirmed to Deadline the news that the second season is already in the works during the company’s holiday party at the H Club in Hollywood. Tonight! The She Hulk show gets a pickle rick of a writer, Titans goes for another season and The Batman movie hires some villains all that and more on this comic edition of Multiverse Tonight.

Greetings and welcome to the comics edition of Multiverse Tonight. Episode 51

Still playing Luigi’s Mansion 3 on the Switch. Still going good, although I’m slowing down.

Can you believe we’re already in the end of November? Just a short hop , skip and a jump to the end of the year. At least we have some new Rick and Morty to watch.

Marvel

Disney Plus’ She-Hulk has found a new writer in Rick and Morty writer Jessica Gao. Jessica won an Emmy for writing the Pickle Rick episode. This is the first development for the show since it was announced at D23. This comes after the news that Jeremy Slater, who developed THe Umbrella Academy for Netflix will be overseeing the Moon Knight series. Could the hiring of Jessica Gao show that She-Hulk will have or of a humorous bent?

Marvel head Kevin Fiege in an interview with Bloomberg news told the outlet that the Disney Plus Loki series will directly tie into doctor Strange and the multiverse of madness. It;s not the only Disney Plus series to tie into the movie as WandaVision will as well. The six episode Loki series won’t be out until 2021.

Marvel studios might be doing well today. But the recession almost killed it before it got started. In order for Marvel Studios to get off the ground, in 2005, MarveI needed a huge loan. It got 525 million from Merrill Lynch. It was good timing, in 2008, the great recession happened and that money would have dried up. Talking with The Hollywood reporter’s Scott Feinberg , Kevni Fiege confirms the fact that Merrill Lynch wouldn’t have been able to provide that funding saying quote “That’s a good question I hadn’t thought about. We wouldn’t have gotten the loan afterwards, you’re probably right,” unquote . why? Simple. Merrill Lynch was a casualty of the recession after losing 51.8 billion in the subprime mortgage catastrophe. The company ended up being sold off to Bank of America.

Now here we are almost a decade and a half later and Marvel has billions of dollars.

Zachary Levi was almost Starlord.James Gunn, the maker of the Gaurdians of the Galaxy movies confirmed the fact during a q and a on instagram stories.  According to Mr. Gunns answer to the question about Zacary Levi being considered, James Gunn wrote quote “Yes. And he was amazing,“”So when Peter Safran, the producer of Shazam, came to me asking about who would be good as the character I strongly suggested Zach. I’ve been told by Peter and the DC folks that’s what got the ball rolling. But I think it was #zacharylevi’s immense talent that did that.”

Levi responded to the post on his Instagram saying quote”And brother, it means the absolute world,” “Thanks for seeing that in me, and sharing that conviction with others. It helped literally change my life. I hope we get to work together at some point soon.” unquote

In another universe, it was so. Anyone up for universe hoping?

The Tokyo  burglar nicknamed The Ame-zing Spider Man may have been caught. According to the site FNN.jp, a Mr. Hiroki Horiguchi was arrested on November first for allegedly breaking into a rooftop office in the Tokyo neighborhood of Shinjuku. The 26 year old man allegedly than broke a window, got in and got out with 66,000 yen which is approximately six hundred five dollars american.

Because of the techniques and methods used, they thought that he has the serial burglar dubbed the Ame-szing Spiderman. The burglar had a thing for scaling buildings to get access to his targets. The reason he was called ame-zing is this. All the robberies took place at night that a rainstorm or typhoon took place. Ame is japanese for rain.. The Ame-zing Spider Man is suspected of at least a dozen burglaries.

DC

Danielle announced it via instagram with a photo of herself eating breakfast with the caption eating for two with a winking face emoji. According to a report a report from People magazine, the couple will welcome their child in the spring of 2020. Danielle and Hays got married back in 2017.

Author Neil Gaiman, speaking with Radio times gave an update on The Sandman series that’s being made for Netflix. He told the program quote “There are three of us, showrunner [Allan] Heinberg, [David S.] Goyer and me, and we’ve just finished writing the first episode, and plotting and breaking down the first two seasons, so we’ll see what happens next.” unquote. No second season has been officially greenlit and no word has come forth on casting, production or release dates.

DC Universe and Warner Bros Television have officially announced that Titans will be coming back for a third season. The third season will arrive in the fall of 2020.

California is still suffering from fires if you’ll remember my interview with Orville Producer Tom Costantino, that interview had been delayed from the week before due to a fire that caused his family to be under a voluntary evacuation order. Now Deadline reports that the warner Bros lot had to be evacuated as a precautionary measure after a small brush fire broke out in the hollyWood Hills near the studio.

The Barham fire started near 3694 North Barham Blvd. Which is just about a half mile from the

Warners studio lot, around 152 in the afternoon of  Saturday November 2nd. Luckily by 510 pm that day the Los angeles fire department reported that forward progress had been stopped. By that point the fire had burned 34 acres in the hills between Burbank and Universal City.

Speaking of Warner Bros, the studio has announced that it’s updating its logo. The logo is a now elongated blue shield with the letters WB on it.  It harkens back to how the logo looked in the 1930’s. The new logo will begin appearing on the companies productions starting in early 2020. If you’d like to look at all the different variations on the wb logo I’ll have a link to a site that has a detailed history of the different permutations of the iconic logo.http://annyas.com/screenshots/warner-bros-logo/

We got some Batman casting news. First off The Batman director Matt Reeves confirmed on twitter that Andy Serkis will play the role of Alfred Pennyworth. He joins Robbert Pattinson has Batman, Jeffery Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, newcomer Jayme Lawson will be playing a new character named Bella who is a grassroots political candidate running for office …or is that a ruse and  she’s playing Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl and Paul Dano from There Will be Blood has been cast as Edward Nashton aka The Riddler

It looks like it’s truly the end of the line for Batman’s father figure slash butler. Alfred Pennyworth. DC has confirmed that he was indeed killed by Bane. His death will be explored in Batman: Pennyworth R.I.P. a new one shot by James Tynion the fourth and Peter J Tomasi with art by Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira. Here’ s the description quote “Alfred Pennyworth served the Wayne family for decades—even through the terrible loss of the Dark Knight’s parents. His shocking death at the hands of Bane is the only event that could possibly compare to that fateful night in Crime Alley, and it leaves Bruce at a similar crossroads. If Alfred was the glue that held the Bat-Family together, how will Batman deal with that all falling apart? And if the Caped Crusader is to be truly alone, he might either hang that cape up once and for all…or double down and carry on with this vengeful quest forever.

Batman: Pennyworth R.I.P. celebrates the life of one of the most important people in the history of Gotham City, while also addressing questions about what’s next.” The issue comes out on February 12th, 2020.

So you’re watching Disney Plus and your bring up the Simpsons and are dismayed that they’re being presented not in their original aspect ratio of 4:3 but in the zoomed in 16:9 ratio. Well you’re cries of anguish has been heard. Disney in a statement said quote “We presented “The Simpsons” in 16:9 aspect ratio at launch in order to guarantee visual quality and consistency across all 30 seasons. Over time, Disney+ will roll out new features and additional viewing options. As part of this, in early 2020, Disney+ will make the first 19 seasons (and some episodes from Season 20) of “The Simpsons” available in their original 4:3 aspect ratio, giving subscribers a choice of how they prefer to view the popular series.” unquote During season 20 was when the show went to the 16:9 aspect ratio of today.

We talked a few minutes ago about how Warner Bros has looked to the past to update their logo. Now Deadline reports that Warners is bringing back Rin Tin Tin, the German Shepard that was credited with saving the studio in the 1920’s.

Matt Lieberman, who wrote the upcoming animated movie Scoob and the animated Addams Family movie will be writing the new movie. The movie will be made with Andrew Lazar’s Mad Chance productions along with rights holders Sasha Jenson and Jeff Miller. Apparently the plan is to make the dog the John Wick of dogs. A hero elite military dog on a covert mission to stop a large scale attack. So if John Wick saw the dog got killed, Does Rin Tin Tins humans get killed?

HOcus Pocus 2…is probably something we don’t need. However since it’s gonna get made let’s check in on where it is. The Hollywood Reporter asked Sarah Jessica Parker about it. Asking if she knows anything, she said quote No, I don’t know. There has never been a conversation ever in our lives. Someone just asked me on Instagram, and I said: “We all said we’d love to someday.” But that’s the extent of the conversation. I’ve been asked so much recently about this — it’s a seasonal question… it’s appropriate! Unquote The reporter than added an addendum to the answer in the article quote [When asked, “Any chance of a sequel?” last week on Instagram, Parker responded: “We have all said yes. Now we wait.”] unquote

Sin City is coming tv thanks to Legendary TV. The producer has struck a deal with author Frank Miller to adapt the series of comics into a tv series. Episode Twenty-Six: The Orville and What’s Next

Tonight! Shows are renewed and canceled, Anne Hathaway gets witchy and loot boxes get investigated on this edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to the show! I’m your host Thomas Townley! So have you enjoyed the season finales? The Game of Thrones has been lost or won, The Big Bang Theory has been blown up, shows have been renewed or cancelled. Lots of good and bad. Frankly,  I thought the finale of the Big Bang Theory was good. However for an episode about changes in life, they kinda left Raj out. Raj got nothing. He ended his relationship with his fiancee to be and that was it, nothing. Not one thing really changed for Raj. I think he kinda got the short shrift. Kinda sucked or him.

I heard a lot of people thought this wrap up season of Game of Thrones sucked, I wouldn’t know, I never was really interested in it.

I am getting things put together for Smallville Con in Hutchinson, KS next month, 1 month to be exact. And I planning things for the con including some team ups with SciFi4Me.

So next episode is our one year anniversary. Who knows maybe i’ll change up the theme music, if you have some well wishes or suggestions, if you wanna make me a new logo whatever, just send them along, twitter, email, facebook all those links are on our website. Multiverse Tonight.com and while you’re there check out the show notes, drop a dime through our affiliate links, and more. If you do make something I can use, I might make it worth your while.

Anyway, let’s get on with the news

DC Comics

According to Variety in an exclusive I might add, Robert Pattinson, yes that Robert Pattinson from the Twilight films, is in negotiations to be the star in Matt Reeves The Batman movie which is still scheduled to hit theaters June 25, 2021. However it’s not a done deal, so watch this space. Personally, I just don’t see it.

Rumors have been floating around the next suicide squad movie. Well despite rumors to the contrary, Michael rooker will not be playing King Shark in James Gunn’s upcoming The Suicide Squad. The rumor has been floating around the past few weeks, but in an instagram post Rooker shooker shot it down. With a simple quote Da…..Not unquote. Well I guess I’m inclined to believe Mr. Rooker.  Of course, he could be lying…. After all he usually plays a villian….

More rumor news… Geeks Worldwide reports that Benicio del Toro is Warner Bros. top choice to be the villain of The Suicide Squad as a character codenamed The Mayor. The character is described as a “irascible old warrior that lives for war”

A new teaser for the Batman’s butler Prequel Pennyworth has been released and Pennyworth is a badass. Let’s watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2y4qdiT4vo The EPIX series tells the tory of a 20 year old  Alfred Pennyworth played by Jack Bannon, who just recently completed his duties as a British SAS soldier. To find a new line of work, Alfred forms a new private security company and gets into business with a young billionaire by the name of Thomas Wayne played by (Ben Aldridge).

So, you might be asking your self, how is Pennyworth this kind of bad ass, simple. Executive producer Danny Cannon explains quote “I went back and watched Michael Caine’s Harry Palmer movies, and the first couple of James Bond movies, because going back to that Cold War kind of story telling I liked going back into this period because all of our Berlin movies and Russian espionage movies, it was like the British version of westerns,” unquote

We also have a teaser for HBO’s Watchmen series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zymgtV99Rko

And a trailer for Batwoman https://youtu.be/vrIiPcv4_iY

Marvel

Bad news for Dark Phoenix hopes at the box office,  According to Variety, early tracking for the latest X-Men movie is showing that it will come in at number 2 behind The Secret Life of Pets 2 when it hits theaters, June 7th. The Secret Life of Pets is expected to get around 65 million while Phoenix is expected to get around 50 million.

According to Disney’s CEO and the man most likley to be called the King of All Media, Bob Iger, man he makes a lot of news, During the Disney company’s quarterly call Bob Iger spoke about Marvel’s Phase Four and hinted that details about Phase 4 would probably begin to come to light later this summer. And that some of the hints were in Endgame itself.  Quote “If you watch, and I hope you did, Avengers: Endgame, there were a lot of clues in that film as to movies that may be coming,” Iger said. I guess we’ll have to wait for it to be released on digital and blu-ray to comb over that movie within an inch of it’s pixels.  By the way, Avengers Endgame will hit the Disney Plus streaming service on December eleventh, a month after the new service starts with the release of Captain Marvel.

However if you want to see Captain Marvel sooner then that, it will be released on digital platforms on May twenty eighth and on Blu-ray and DVD on June eleventh. The release will come with deleted scenes, a gag reel and a featurette focused on The Origin of Nick Fury..

During that same call, Iger also revealed that his newest acquisition 20th Century Fox will be scaling back it’s production schedule to just five or six movies a year. That’s about half as many films as the studio released just two years ago. Pretty much prioritizing franchises like Deadpool, Avatar and Kingsman. \\

The Russo Brothers have officially left the Marvel buildings…but they might be tempted back for the right project. Talking to business insider, Anthony Russo said quote “We love Marvel, we have the most amazing working relationship with them, and we’re very close with them,” “Maybe there will be an idea that comes up in the future, but there is none now.” unquote Joe added quote “It’s just about finding the right story that inspires us,” “That’s why we get out of bed every day.” Could that be a Fantastic Four or X-men story? Joe said quote “I love Ben Grimm from the Fantastic Four,” “Doctor Doom was always one of my favorite villains.” He also said he loves Wolverine.

However It’ll be awhile before we get to see any of that as the former Fox held characters probably won’t be seen for at least a few years probably later. But who knows, one day the X symbol will arise in the west from Disney HQ and the Russos will answer the call.

Marvel Studios Chief Kevin Feige has previously stated it could be around 5 years before we see the X-Men in the MCU, though undoubtedly part of that equation will be Wolverine, one of it not the most popular mutant in Marvels universe.

Avenger’s Endgame has been dethroned at the box office, by John Wick Chapter 3 Parabellum, The Keanu Reeves movie grossed over 57 million in its opening weekend, endgame fell by over 53 percent to rake in just 29.4 million. However, Endgame total box office has now topped 2.6 million and has passed Avater on the Domestic All time box office chart.

Star Trek

Trek head Alex Kurtzman talking with the LA Times dropped some info on the Section 31 show that’s currently in development. He told them that the spinoff is looking at some popular film and tv works as touchstones for the story.

“We looked to shows like Killing Eve, to franchises like Mission: Impossible, things that were complicated on a plot level but also a character level. I think it’s fun for people to see a show with a protagonist who’s entirely unreliable. At the end of the day, she’s going to do the right thing, but in the exact wrong way.” unquote

He also spoke of the former Emperor Georgiou character.

Quote “People locked in on Georgiou as being a wonderful oddity,” Kurtzman says. “She is wicked, devious, manipulative and yet somehow radiates this incredible heart. People love her.

Keep in mind, if the series is picked up, and right now there’s no reason why not, given that CBS is in a streaming war with everyone else and needs original content, it won’t be till after the next season of Discovery.

.

The Picard series formally has a title and it’s Star Trek Picard. Not really original. Perhaps they should have called Star Trek Discovery, Star Trek Burnham? Any way, we didn’t get much about it other than a logo and a short clip of Picard not in a Starfleet uniform anymore. The series, still in production will be out on All Access later this year in the United States, on Amazon internationally and on Space and Z in Canada.

By the way, in that same article in the LA Times, Kurtzman said about the Picard series, quote “The mandate was to make it a more psychological show, a character study about this man in his emeritus years. There are so few shows that allow a significantly older protagonist to be the driver.”“What happens when circumstances have conspired to not give him the happiest of endings?” “Hopefully, it’s a reinforcement of [Star Trek creator Gene] Roddenberry’s vision of optimism. He’s going to have to go through deep valleys to get back to the light.” unquote Just as long as it’s not all darkness, I’m good.

We Also have news that the new adult edged animated comedy series Star Trek Lower Decks had its first table read. The series from Mike McMahn, who is also the head writer for Rick and Morty is still a ways away from coming out. If you’ll remember the last episode a new teen centered animated series was also announced for Nickelodeon.

The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills will be showcasing Star Trek Discovery season two in a multimedia exhibit called Star Trek Discovery Fight For The Future. The exhibit will cover two floors of the Paley Center and will showcast the creative process and feature production and concept art, models, props, costumes and set pieces including the Discovery’s captain’s chair, full prosthetic makeup busts and more. David Stapf, president of CBS Studios said quote“Coming off a successful season two of Star Trek Discovery, we are excited to partner with the Paley Center to give fans and visitors an opportunity to see and interact with drawings, costumes and set design from the series,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Television Studios. “This exhibit will allow fans a tactile experience never before seen beyond the studio’s stages.” unquote The exhibit will be up until July 7th.

Star Wars

Star Wars The Mandalorian star Werner Herzog in an interview with the associated press has revealed that he’s never seen a Star Wars movie.  Quote “I have to confess I never saw a single one,” Herzog shared with the Associated Press. “I’ve seen some trailers, I’ve seen some excerpts here and there. And I know about the whole franchise and about the toys for the kids, and so… it’s all a new mythology of a time of some sort of heroics, and it has created new mythologies, and you better take them seriously. Yes, they’re out there, and don’t ignore them.”

If you’re wondering why he’s here, the answer is Jon Favreau, Herzog explains quote

“The Mandalorian, I was invited by Jon Favreau — who started this whole series — to act,” “I looked at the screenplays and I had the feeling, although I know very little about Star Wars, I had the feeling yes, I could do it. It’s a character in whom you cannot trust. And I said yes, I can do that.” unquote

Star Wars: The Mandalorian will debut on Disney+ on November 12th.

Disney CEO Bob Iger, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and directors JJ Abrams and Steven Spielberg went on a personal tour of Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge with Galaxy’s Edge creator Scott Trowbridge. Me. Iger tweeted about it quote “Best way to impress your friends…give them a personal tour of @starwars Galaxy’s Edge!

#stevenspielberg, #jjabrams, Kathy Kennedy with Imagineer & Galaxy’s Edge creator, Scott Trowbridge.” unquote with pictures of them in front of the Millenium Falcon and sitting around the iconic Falcon game board.  Galaxy’s edge will open at Disneyland on May 31st. Wonder if they were also showed out after four hours as well.

Speaking of Disney, they have announced that three more Star Wars films will start hitting theaters with the first one in 2022 and the next two spaced out every two years following.  So why every other year? Well, they announced that the Avatar sequels will be in the odd years. So 2021, Avatar 2, 2022 star wars 10, 2023 Avatar 3, 2024 Star Wars 11, etcra. Personally, I think I’ll skip Dances with Smurfs 2….err Avatar 2.

EA is seeing potential dollar signs with Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order. During a recent earnings call, EA said that they expect Fallen Order to sell between six and eight million copies by March 31, 2020.  They came about these expectations by how well Star Wars Battlefront II sold in the same amount of time. The game will be released on November 15th on PS4, Xbox one and pc.

Last issue we talked about the passing of Peter Mayhew, the original Chewy.

Nick Hague an astronaut currently on the International Space Station saluted Mr. Mayew on twitter, quote Honoring Peter Mayhew (also known as Chewbacca) up here on @Space_Station. Thank you Peter for inspiring generations of explorers. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D6ErMQGXoAA_wVi.jpg unquote he also included a picture of Mayhew posted on a window of the station that was looking at earth. Very nice.

Geek News

We are fully loaded with Geek News this week.

Starting with someone who has had a lot of time with remakes, Anne Hathaway. This time Anne is in Robert Zemeckis’ remake of the 1990 cult classic which was based on the 1983 novel by Roald Dahl, The Witches. Ms. Hathaway about the new version and how much it’s different from the 90’s version. Anne said quote “ I think the stories will be the only thing that is familiar. I think everything else is totally from the mind of Robert Zemeckis and I’m really excited.” unquote.

Zemeckis is on record as saying that the movie will be a more accurate version of Roald Dahl’s original work, than the 1990 Jim Henson production. Zemeckis called the French site Allocine quote We’re going to set it in the Gothic South of the 1960’s. It’s an exciting way to put a sociological spin on this kind of with story.”

Anne Hathaway will be playing the Grand High Witch and Octavia Spencer will be playing the grandmother. The boy will be played by newcomer Jahzir Bruno. The Witches will hit theaters on October 16, 2020.

Have you seen the new trailer for It Chapter 2? Let’s watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqUopiAYdRg

Looks really good.

Speaking of It. Bill Skarsgard, who plays Pennywise, the IT of the story says that playing the role for the second movie was even more difficult. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bill said quote “After we wrapped, I was in my childhood home in Sweden, sitting having coffee with my mom at our kitchen table, and realized, ‘Oh, holy sh–, I don’t have to deal with this relationship anymore!'”. “It was a very quick shift of just feeling better, like ‘Oh my God, I’m relieved that I don’t have to deal with the darkness of the character.’ I likened it to an exorcism — him exiting my body and getting rid of the Pennywise toxins.” Even with that release he couldn’t get himself and Pennywise quote separated telling EW quote “I was home, done with the movie, and I started having very strange and vivid Pennywise dreams,”. “Every night, he came and visited. It was in the shape of either me dealing with him, sort of Pennywise as a separate entity of me, and then also me as Pennywise in circumstances that I didn’t appreciate. Like, I’m Pennywise and I’m really upset that I’m out in public and people are looking at me.” “This was a process of letting go of the monster,” “It was amazing. It’s a daunting but exciting thing to sort of revisit him again.” Well Bill I hope you’re having sweet dreams right now. Keep Pennywise at bay.  If you need someone to check under your bed, I think I know some women who would be happy to oblige.

The New York State Fair wants the writers of The Simpsons to come to the Fair in person. After a recent episode featured a song making light of upstate new york aired on the show , the head of the New York state fair has invited the staff of tv longest running animated series to prove that the region is not a joke. New York State Fair Director Troy Waffner said in a statement quote “We want the show’s writers to see the very best of New York and the Fair is the perfect place to highlight the diversity and vitality of one of the nation’s largest economies. We know it’s just a tv show, we can certainly take a joke and we love The Simpsons, but there’s so much that’s great about the region.” unquote. Director Waffner added in the statement that they would be given free admission and a gift basket of local foods.  No word on if the writers will take him up on the offer.

Comic Publishers Oni Press and Lion Forge are merging. Both companies are hoping that this will strengthen their library of Intellectual properties and they can then use the combined company to spread out to media platforms like film and animation.

Current Oni Press Publisher, James Lucas Jones will be president of the new company. Oni Press’ biggest hit to date was Scott Pilgrim vs the World.

Loot boxes might get the ban hammer from Congress. Missouri senator Josh Hawley has introduced legislation to ban explotative microtransactions, including Loot Boxes and pay to win systems.

The Protecting Children from Abusive Games Act would mirror the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act  and target games that are aimed at users under 18 years old. Under the bill, such games would not be allowed to have loot boxes and would take aim at pay to win mechanics like having to spend money to buy additional time or a special weapon to help you win.

Senator Hawley in a statement said “When a game is designed for kids, game developers shouldn’t be allowed to monetize addiction,” “And when kids play games designed for adults, they should be walled off from compulsive microtransactions. Game developers who knowingly exploit children should face legal consequences.”

The bill has an uphill climb to ever make it to a law. First it would have to make it into committee’s in the senate and than the house and the likelihood of it getting out of committee are remote. If it does make any progress, we will let you know.

Adult Swim is full of off beat shows including Harvey Birdman the show that took Hanna Barbera hero Birdman and turned him into a lawyer for other Hanna Barbera characters. Now Adult Swim has announced that Birdgirl will be getting her own spinoff series on the network. The show, starting Paget Brewster as the titular Birdgirl doesn’t have a launch date yet.

Netflix has had a stream of good luck with Dark Horse properties Polar and The Umbrella Academy. Now Dark Horse and Netflix have signed a first look deal that gives Netflix the first pick of Dark Horse Properties for future tv shows or movies. Dark Horse president and founder Mike Richardson in a statement said quote “We are very excited about this new arrangement with the talented people at Netflix. We have strong creative relationships as well as a large content library to work with and, as we have seen with our recent projects, Netflix is the perfect partner to bring our stories to fans around the world.” unquote and Cindy Holland VP of Original content for Netflix added quote “Following the success of The Umbrella Academy, we’re excited to extend our relationship with Dark Horse Comics. The Netflix teams are already working in deep collaboration with Dark Horse to identify projects beyond the world of traditional superheroes — branching into horror, fantasy and family entertainment — that we think our members will love.” Netflix really needs the content now after Disney and now WarnerMedia have announced that they will be withdrawing their properties from other streaming services in order to start their own.

And speaking of streaming. Disney has now taken full control of Hulu after Comcast agreed to eventually sell their stake of the service to the Walt Disney Company. The sale price would probably be around 5.8 billion dollars and would probably not happen for at least five years. Under the terms of the deal, Comcast agrees to license NBC shows to Hulu until 2024 with the option to pull the content after three years. Comcast will also give up three seats on hulu’s board. Hulu currently has around 28 million subscribers.

Warner Bros new Matrix sequel has gotten a boost.  During an interview with Yahoo Movies UK, John Wick director and Matrix stunt coordinator Chad Stahelski said quote “I’m super happy that the Wachowskis are not just doing a Matrix, but they’re expanding what we all loved. And if it’s anywhere near the level of what they’ve already done, it wouldn’t take more than a call to go, ‘Hey, we want you to be a stunt guy’ and I would probably go and get hit by a car.” unquote The movie is currently being written by Zac Penn and is said to be more of a revival than a reboot.

Mel Gibson is going to play Santa. Yep. A new Action Comedy movie called Fatman will star Mel and will tell the story of quote “a rowdy, unorthodox Santa Claus who is fighting his business decline.” There’s an interesting and amusing twist to the story, though, as “a neglected and precocious 12-year-old hires a hitman to kill Santa after receiving a lump of coal in his stocking.” Unquote The movie is being directed by Ian and Eshom Nelms from a script they wrote. Are you interested in Mel Gibson as Santa Claus?

I’m so happy, The network upfronts, the week when the broadcasters pitch their new fall lineup to mainly advertisers has happened. Not a lot of genre tv on the networks unless you’re networks letters are C and W.

First off, let me say how happy I am that The Orville did get it’s order for a third season. Thank you New Fox. However we will have to wait till Thursday night football ends in 2020 for that new season to start.

While we’re talking Fox. They had a new show on the schedule sure to make you distrust your digital assistant speaker. Next. Here’s the trailer https://youtu.be/jFR3KsBrHRQ

Yep, killer AI. I hate to be this guy, but wouldn’t it just end up taking over the world in episode one?

And the best news to come out of the upfronts came from Warner Media. Rick and Morty season four  https://youtu.be/dIdk61KN1to

And remember this is just the start of seventy new episodes that were ordered by Adult Swim. Awesome.

Bad News, Amazon is not picking up The Tick for a third season. The announcement was made by Tick creator Ben Edlund quote “I’m sorry to say Amazon has chosen not to proceed with @TheTickTV I’m not sorry to say I love this show, its cast, its story, and its message. Destiny demands that my compatriots and I now seek a new home for this series.”  Unquote

Disney’s feature film length reimagining of the 90’s cartoon series Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue rangers now has a director. Akiva Schaffer, a member of the Lonely Island, he also co directed Popstar: Never Stop Stopping and Hulu’s Pen15, will be taking on the live and cq hybrid picture. No plot details have come to light, however it’s being described as being meta, self referential and cool. Yep. Also no word on if this well actually make theaters or just go straight to Disney Plus. My bet would be the later.

Host of Wild Kingdom, Jim Fowler has passed away. Younger kids might not know him, but Fowler co hosted Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom with Marlin Perkins starting back in 1963. He was also a regular guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, where he brought Johnny in contact with many amusing animals. Here’s a clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cFLFKyu5iY

Jim was always interested in wildlife when he was a kid, He studied zoology in college , where he was also a star baseball player. He could have played for the Phillies or Yankees but he turned them down to pursue a career as a naturalist.

Jim Fowler was 89 years old.
